Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op):
Siena: I have been tuning, boosting, moulding and modifying different engines since the early '90's.

Till date, I have not come across ANY aftermarket cone filter / CAI that gives any appreciable horsepower increase over the USEFUL rev range. Sure, some may give an increase of 5 hp over stock at let's say 3,000 rpm. Then dip to -7 hp at 4,700 rpm. If you look at a graph of a typically CAI'd engine on a dyno, you'll see lots of dips and troughs in the power curve.

Gaining 7 hp, then losing 13 between 1,000 and 7,000 rpm is pointless. The important area to look at in a power curve is the area beyond 5,250 rpm. This is the area where torque and hp curves cross. Any power gain from a CAI BELOW this area is NOT useful. It's the area "beyond the curve" that counts.

CAI's are generally NOT MAF friendly. Some top-end CAI's have larger air spaces, to allow the engine breathe better. These will need periodic oiling, to trap dust. This oil and the MAF hot film don't go well together. Oil kills a MAF. CAI's also increase fuel consumption, as is expected. More air = more gas to avoid lean-running.

Also, installing a CAI is NOT straight forward. The MAF often needs scaling to match the CAI size, something DIY fitters seldom do. The result is a noisy engine, with massive holes in the power curve.

Lastly, HEAT. How many users box off the CAI from the exhaust, so the engine doesn't draw in hot air, which is less dense, and power-robbing compared to cold air? Even when boxed off, the air the engine breathes is still going to be warm, at best.
A friend suggested have a long tube instead of a short tube CAI n the tubing fabricated to an area of the the engine bay - unfortunately I haven't da space for that.(does this help the heat problem associated with them? )

The Camry rarely goes beyond the 5000rpm range - hell even on longer drives - bummer on that one.

So here's what bugs me....There must be some truth in d gain advertised...I understand a lil bit of the HP/Torque Curve.'Say a gain or loss of 3-8HP is where EXACTLY (or from experience which rev range),:-Low end, Mid range or Top?

Can they be tuned to a particular rev range Or you just have to try out as many CAI to get an appreciable HP gain at the "Sweet spot"-max HP/max Torque?

As with Cam tuning where a gain in the low low end is followed by a loss at the top end..is this applicable to CAI ' S?

I do understand the perks associated with CAI"s and alot is doubly confirmed by you-
But why do tuners do run them if they have these downsides over stock intakes?

Is there some kinda magic "doors open HP increase" before and after mapping it in tune with the stock ECU

Thanks for the reply Siena. .I hope I'm not about to spend cash on a gain that isn't worth it.
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op): 11:34am On Aug 14, 2014
Need help with this.....Most Top CAI manufactures boast a HP gain of 3-8HP increase. This one gives an increase of bout 5hp

I know the advantage of having CAI installed,

What bothers me.

"Is how the MAF sensor behaves afterwards".

Advantage over stock on MAF behavior.
Changes in the fuel consumption.
Idling.
Throttle response.huh

Be glad if anyone with experience with using em could help!

It's a Takeda Cold Air Intake.and I already ordered it.

Sir, Have you tried an ECU/ECM reset?

You can use your OBDII scanner.
Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m): 10:34pm On Aug 11, 2014
elbedso: Wow what a myopic and dumb thing to say. You should know that the accord has different variants. And the dash and body will differ depending on the country / region
A common example is the American spec corolla and the 'bank type corolla'
Both are 2 variants of corolla with different body shapes, and there's probably still more sef which i don't know about
Yup dumb thing to say...I get yah and I'm pretty worried that a car nut like me could miss that...

Just like my wife..always nagging(being sarcastic here before there's a standoff again).Even after greenhulk(Thanks bro!) cleared da air.

Well thanks again for pointing it out...Probably waiting for my wife's mom to come tell me again there's another variant. grin
Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m):
greenhulk: Mr know it all. Does a 2008 Honda Accord have only one variant? Do u know they have American and Euro specs? Again u wrote this piece of shyte because u still believe a Honda can't do that speed? From the picture I posted, u can see the calibration is km/hr and that should tell u its not an American specs.
Case rested.

Mr know it all gives his apologies...should have asked which variant your Honda was.

Now now hold on....a Honda can't do that speed?..Do you really know where I'm driving at?

(Horsepower,High speed Stability and Aerodynamics--In a japanese sedan)

If you feel your Honda performs - In terms of straight line speed so be it.

I personally drive a toyota...Do I feel safe in it when I reach speeds of 170kph? Yeah..

I would feel safer though in a BMW.

Anyways.my apologies once more.
Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m): 6:52am On Aug 11, 2014
Apparently this is the Honda 2008 accord "Piece of cake" speed you drove at...

Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m): 6:48am On Aug 11, 2014
greenhulk: Piece of cake. My 2008 Honda Accord is stock and definitely not European. Oh I forgot, its even I4 not V6. I know German cars are great, but u people underrate Japanese cars too much here on Nairaland.
Hmmmm....now I'm flushed...that speedometer is from which car?..Last time I checked a 2008 Honda Accord speedometer looked like this...

Pssss...I hope you'll enlighten us which variant of your Car has a speedometer that looks like this---And don't give me the modified speedo crap angry

Don't go ripping just to get noticed.

Durotimi1: Hmmm, all of una wan die!!!!!!!!!! The sad thing is many of you have a wife and children and you are willing to risk their well being for a cheap thrill. Please se the link below. It may help calm you down. https://www.nairaland.com/1851570/ghastly-motor-accident-along-akure
Our hearts go out to those involved in this unfortunate and most terrible occurrence. ..

Now sir. I am pretty much sure the OP DOES have a wife and kid - And is wise enough to know the implications of "Uncontrolled Speed"...

Cheap thrill?..posting a pic on how fast I went on a straight, pot hole free traffic-less road with no harm done to pedestrian or animals is probably my/His business (OP) and those who share these views.
I believe that Cause and Effect was well thought of before any of these Risky Cheap thrills were performed.

Yes it's risky and I'm pretty much sure the thread Is filled up with those who share your view.
Grateful for the Post though but saying "All of una wan die" is just mean!....people die from being stationary - worse even "ON TOP WOMAN"...
We're all matured n happy enough to know the feeling of accomplishment we gain from going where no WUSSY in a kia Rio has gone before...
Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m):
yungboss: on the gt4, the Honda NSX will kill off most of the German cars...it handles a bit better that the 2003 BMW m3. The handling of the supra is crap...too much of wheel spin.
Alrite In as much as I said that Euro cars are better--- built in terms of the technicality n refinement the engineers put in there vehicles compare to the mass produced consumer demand concept of the Japanese cars doesn't mean that if the Japanese put their minds to it...cars like the M3, Audi Rs5, Mercedes c63 AMG wouldn't be back view mirror poster

Here:
The Lexus LFA,
The Nissan GTR,
The Acura NSX

Point is they are just 3-atleast?....Now these.
The Koenisserg Agira
The BMW M6
The Audi S7 And RS7
The Zonda F
Ferrari F1, Berlinetta, Lamboghini Aventador, Mercedes SLR, SLS AMG Black,Porsche 911 turbo, GT, GT3 RS

Hyper cars,Super Cars all from Europe- 200+mph cars!!!,

How can the Japanese match up to these?

Now even in the previous years (90's) still with the Japanese Self Imposed 280hp restriction..Euro cars were already producing 400+HP cars that were street legal.

God willing the cash drops.its Euro all the way....

Even in the virtual world they(JDM's) still don't match up.. (I am an avid GT5 online racer tongue)
Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by Jacksolo4me(m): 10:43am On Aug 08, 2014
First of all...This thread would probably be the reason why my third daughter may not be born..... grin

Secondly....If your car is stock (not modified performance n suspension wise) and not European - Please stay below 180kph.(Yes!!!-Argue all you want)

Thirdly....Since my balls are probably smaller than my German shepherd's.

P.S: pic is not mine but of someones whose balls are bigger than my German shepherd's. -Bmw 135i(I hope I can do it someday)

For that choice of car for Nigerian roads(trust me I'd also choose of sort)...it sure means CityNG has sure had it with being stuck in da mud - Or has it in for our very patient Nigerian road users!

yungboss: Toyota Supra
I also agree...2JZ over a VQ, we'll that's unless it's on a nissan GTR grin
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op): 10:52am On Aug 07, 2014
yungboss: good one sir. What would it be like having a TRD kit in your Camry...? The only setback would be the FWD platform.
I miss seeing the RWD Toyota Supra.
There's one just at the gate of my Mechanic's workshop...i think an '03 model. It has a faulty Gearbox...
Yes oh!...I do drool over it.set back is it doesn't come cheap.

Funny though I'm thinking of another car..Preferably a RWD bmw. Got ma eyes set on an m3 coupe.

Itl take loads of cash before I can match up to being called "TERROR CAMO" grin

That toyota supra 03 would be a good project car

Jacksolo4me: Well the 2.4L I4 does it in bout 6.4sec (2012 SE 3.5 V6 in 5.7secs)

Mine does it in 6.1/6.2sec....Lighter wheels n a half tank of gas grin
The info above is misleading...ripped it of toyotanation...apparently these did not happen in a bone "stock" Camry. And these were V6 variants!...my apologies.

Corrected times.
0-60: 8.6 sec
1/4 mile: 16.0 sec on an

My own Camry (Ran it yesterday nite - Quarter tank of gas-STANDSTILL)
0-60: 8.1sec

Apparently stupidity was the case for the earlier post on the 0-60 time...I did that on a rolling start.since I needed to launch at 3500rpm
0-60

Thanks to KA24DETT...for publicly pointing out my DUI problems grin.

yungboss: Repairs could run into a region of cost unforeseen...so one would consider the cost of restoring/repairing the 'old flame' before making a decision
Truly spoken...but then would anyone still do it?...Buying a restoration project at near cost of a "working car"? angry
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op):
CityNG: And this is what I call an upgrade.

When you still have to "race" other cars then you haven't really accomplished the hippo intention, if that is the reason for all the air dams.

As for me, sitting at a stoplight, the idle totally off due to the ridiculous camshaft that is installed, and a much faster pulls up next to me, I gently bleed the NOS, blip the throttle sending the whole car shaking a bit and then watching my fast car next to me change his mind and turn right makes it all worthwhile. grin
grin.....

cne010: Very mouth watering offer but don't tell you're planning to swap your tricked out Camry?
shocked...no way!

Then again the fella ' s over at the BMW thread aren't making ones decision easy!!!
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op): 10:18pm On Aug 05, 2014
yungboss: the 2.4l top end may not be that outstanding...i raced one in my 320i,2.0l 1994. He had me up to 180km/h,after which he could follow me no longer at +200km/h
Hmmm.my guess is that it was more of a stability issue than outright straight line speed (stock suspension setup-tire profile, ride height and car rigidity)

I have taken mine to 185kph with no problems past that and i notice a lil bit of bounce and weaving(tires)

I have stopped going after BMW ' S - FACT is you'll get mopped. angry
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op): 10:01pm On Aug 05, 2014
Chuckdee: Hmmmm, I doubt how the 2.4L I4 engine on the camry can have a faster 'stock time' with its 158 hp @ 6000 rpm compared to the V6's 268 HP!
I have personally dusted a 2008 I4 LE on the highway, it never saw my back grin
It's stock time is no way near that of the Camry V6 (5.7sec) compared to a 6.4sec on the I4.

But you'll be surprised how close the quarter mile times are...14.1 on the V6 to a 14.4 on the I4.

So what happens at the top end of its power curve?
Car TalkRe: Your Modified Camry ' S - Any Model by Jacksolo4me(op): 9:41pm On Aug 05, 2014
yungboss: "stock time" I meant to say, typography error.
that's quite fast...my 2.5l 323ci does it in about 7.6-7.7s, I had a race with a 3.5l v6 Camry sometime ago...i had him on the launch up to about 80km/h or so...those cars are pretty fast
Yup they are....was surprised to see that a Camaro lost to a Camry (both were V6)...

But still having an engine bay that looks like this on a Camry would scare the paint off a Ferrari 430 Scuderia.

Car TalkCar Swaps - Is It Advisable, If It's Your Old Flame. by Jacksolo4me(op): 8:41pm On Aug 05, 2014
Recently came in contact with a 2006 BMW 650i convertible coupe..4.8L V8 360hp at da rear wheels.

It had a host of issues in it that would easily run into 6 figures and the owner was asking for 2.5m for it otherwise hell swap it with a "suitable" car.

Here's the question.

"You know deep inside ull burn if you make a deal like this especially when the car(Yours) is in perfectly good shape-if not better, But that desire that eats within you is telling you to go for it"

Would you do a swap with an old flame(car you'll love to have then but couldn't afford it) even if it means ull be at loss.

Here's a pic of mine

KA24DETT: Whats the 0-60 now ?
0-60 is still stock times

It's the quote I got for the requested parts I wanted.

Best I could do was the CAI, and a couple spares.
