Who is this wwheelz ? One  of the most brilliant, straight and unbiased contributors of ideas on auto section of nairaland that I have ever read. I must confess,  I have never read such a sound contribution. I am an avid reader on NL. I have read all the sycophancy being perpetrated on auto section by a few cohort who think in their myopic way of reasoning that only their voices should be heard. They can sing praises of who they like and at the same time condemn other dealers. The notable among this group is Igwe 1 and Zion Train. Honesty and trustworthy in their mindset mean vin listing on auto adverts.

I read all that Ziontrain spewed out - nothing suggest to me that he is a car dealer. Anyone can clamour for transparency and honesty on this thread but for Ziontrain to mislead nairalanders with his limited knowledge on car dealership is uncalled for. Let me add to your lecture:
FYI
1) Total loss is the mode d'employ jargon used by insurance firms to describe any car they cannot be arsed to repair, they pay the vehicle owner and then sell the car on as salvage.

2) After the salvaged vehicle is repaired and passes the state's inspection, a rebuilt certificate or assembled from salvage parts is issued, then the car is once again fit to be driven.

3) A car that is not redeemable is issued with a certificate of destruction or a non rebuidable title so that they could be sold on for part.  

1) Total loss does not mean a car cannot be repaired. A car is termed salvage because the insurance appraiser estimates that the cost of repair of an accident car will be more than the actual market value of the car before the accident.

2)In Canada, after the salvaged vehicle is repaired, it is taken to Structural Safety Inspectors who charge a fee to measure and straighten the vehicle by up to millimeter accuracy using frame straightening machine with 3D computerized measuring system. Thereafter, structural safety certificate is issued follow by a mechanical safety standards certificate which expires 36 days from the day  of issuance. With these 2 certificates and a vehicle emissions test report for registration at the license office will result in labeling the car REBUILT then the car is once again fit to be driven.

3)In Canada such a car is called IRREPARABLE  and not fit to be driven in North America. It is worth to note that a flooded vehicle is classify as an irreparable car while a salvage car is not. In some states in the USA like Texas both salvage and irreparable vehicle are classify as SALVAGE.

2) It is not against the law to advertize a car without vin in the US, it is only applicable in some states

@Jafour, I respect your view that VIN number should be made optional but I think most dealers here do not share that view. It will be interesting to know who are the dealers against this. If you have been active on the forum, you will remember that there was an opinion poll taken by Siena on this issue. The result is there for everyone to see.
Must I be active on every thread if I don't have any cogent reason to contribute? besides I contributed in  the opinion poll taken by Siena. I have noticed that you have goofed on many threads, I would advice you to always check your facts before posting.

If a vehicle has any kind of accident history, I believe it is legitimate for buyer to be made aware of such. This is the key to the issue and I agree in totality with you that a buyer should be made aware of anything (not only accident) on the vehicle by the dealer in such a way that it will affect the price the buyer will be willing to offer. That is what disclosure is about.

What we are asking for here is transparency and honesty - VIN number makes this possible. I disagree with you, vin listing will not make a dealer to be honest. You must have read the thread where a dealer posted a vin for another vehicle pics.

I sincerely support your agitation for transparency and honesty on this forum - to make this happen, we need the collective inputs of dealers and buyers.
Now that vin listing is more or less compulsory by the admininistrator lets see the honesty and transparency in dealers on NL.

I am an advocate of optional vin listing in car advert. Seun, your recommendation of vin will satisfy the majority of auto thread- trotters who had yearned for it not for dealers/actual buyers. I know who plays the piper dictates the tunes but it will have been better for you to seek the counsel of dealers who advertise on NL and actual buyers who bought cars in the past through NL.

As @ Ivvie once quoted in one thread "I believe a sub-category should be for sales/classifieds" I wish this would have been your pursuit to generate income and attract traffic flow to your site more than what is being done in www.autotrader.ca etc where vin listing is not compulsory  but optional.

To have make the above statement, makes you a car expert. A bumper hit reported to the insurance company is an accident. Even a scratch on the bumper will result in insurance claims or repairs. Listing a vin of a car reported as an accident due to bumper scratch put the dealer at a disadvantage position before a buyer has the opportunity to look at the car(Nigerians don't want to hear anything accident even if very minor). The taste of the pudding is in the eating.

It might surprise you to know that in Canada, there is something called the OMVIC and if you know enough about dealership in Canada, you will know what OMVIC stands for, so this makes it easier for people that loses money to dealers to go and complain and some of the times cld get their money back, however, in Nigeria, people are arrested buying rides that were stolen from Canada and USA, who would blame, the buyers, the sellers or the govt?

There is nothing to be surprised about OMVIC. I am a registered dealer with OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council). Please go to OMVIC site, www.omvic.on.ca under SERVICES, click Dealers/Salesperson, under Registration, click Dealer and Salesperson Search then enter my dealership name Bellin International. OMVIC stands for Honesty,Integrity and financial responsibilty. The act governing OMVIC requires that a dealer must disclose all material facts about damage of the vehicle to the customer, this includes what a dealer knows or what he should know about the vehicle. You can see that in my above post, I disclosed a material fact and none of the 1352 viewers/buyers asked for vin number (Only $$$ Rhino identified what a dealer should be).
The enforcement officers at the ports and border should be blamed for stolen vehicles. Listing vin numbers for you to check at CARFAX, CARPROOF, AUTOCHECK etc will only tell you about a vehicle that was reported stolen but not re-vin stolen vehicle. My brother, I do not want to dwell on the other side of vin number vis-a-vis stolen vehicle. But bear in mind that the vin number you're requesting for will only tell you the reported history of a vehicle - a dealer should be able to tell you what he knows about the present condition of a vehicle.

I hope also Nigeria will grow up to be like USA. For now, there is no Motor Vehicle Dealers act in Nigeria making it mandatory for Dealers to list vin in their adverts and as such dealers (registered/unregistered) like inspire et al still have a field day not listing their vin numbers. SEUN should not wade into this vin listing.

Your contribution of vin listing is of good intent and I must agree with you that someday it will come.

I beg to disagree. Which of the Dodge model have you driven before to arrive at your unsubstantiated conclusion? Many models of Dodge (old $ late)are plying North American roads including Canada where I live. I used the commonest of their brand, a 1999 dodge caravan for 2 years without any electrical faults you claimed.

If you're not interested in buying an American car while not move on rather being sentimental about what you don't know. For your information, many cars are not allowed into Canada because they do not meet their standards. In this part of the world, they never compromise on safety and standards.

To maintain a 2008 car, you only need to service it for the next 3 years. Just oil change, don't bother to change the plugs, I bet plugs in North America last more than 5 years. I have a Lagos-cleared 1999 Dodge Caravan for your price. Dodge Caravan is a reliable van. It is commonly use in North America. In every 5-car on the road there is a Dodge Caravan especially in Canada. Need not say more. It is more roomy and stronger in terms of conveying (load) weight than many vans including Toyota Sienna. Please forget the poster that mentioned transmission problem, I used mine for 2 years without any transmission problem before shipping it down to 9ja. No doubt any vehicle that has mileage over 300 will develop varying faults but the antidote is maintenance, maintenance and maintenance. If the transmission packed up, replace it. It is not an excuse to condemn a car. Why do the smart guys in Ladipo sell transmission of almost all brand of vehicles? Dodge Caravan is not an exception.
