It is news to me that MSC Rhone has been grounded. The only good news is that the container that was diverted and discharged in Tema, Ghana since December 20, 2008 has been finally discharged on January 20, 2009 at Tin Can port. Please read the attached letter sent to shippers by MSC (attachments are not going through). The import of the letter is that  failure to clear your  container within the 15 days grace will result in demurrage of $2,157.17. The fact is that 7 days has gone out fo the 15 days grace without any hope in sight of clearing the container.

You can see the confusion when his excellency and commander-in-chief gave 60-day ultimatum to clear the congestion at the port and the shipping line giving 15 days for no fault of the shippers/consignees.

This is typical of FELA sang in his days, Confusion break bone, yepa, double wahala for deadi body and the owner of deadi bodi.

I will implore you not to go into the intricacies of car dealership. Please allow people who choose to wallow in ignorance to do so. I know you are on an enlightenment campaign  to prove that it is possible to sell the car at the price quoted by the poster but you have revealed so much that I am no longer comfortable as a dealer. Busy-body, your grasp and knowledge of car dealership makes me wonder why you are not a car dealer. Please I will appreciate it if you tell people only what they need to know and not all.  Every trade/profession has its secrets. Even if you want to prove your points, I enjoin you to limit your scope of explanations.  Please stop telling the consumers that they can get car cheaper at the auctions, the many reasons why a dealer will sell at a lower price, high mileage means lower price at the auctions etc all these are truism that no genuine dealer will dispute but you are not helping if everyone knows A-Z of car dealership. Most of my customers got their cars cheaper than the average price on nairaland but that does not mean I will come on the forum to derail a thread. The best I can do is to reply to any poster who ask  for a cheaper price that is possible to contact me and allow others who think that cheaper cars are lemon to wonder afterall you always say ignorance is a bliss.

Please, biko, ejo leave Manheim and ADESA (those are the auctions I got my cars from) out of the picture.

I disagree with you like Jesarmy that your 30% is a bit on the high side. The fact is, it is only new cars  you can get cheaper with your figure and not used cars. Even some American cars were advertised as BOGOF (Buy one get one free).  The noise about the high Naija exchange rates is that when you are repatriating the fund, the exchange rate will have eroded your profit and it does not balance.

Let them have meetings and seminars for eternity, nothing, nothing again, I dare say, will change.

The only seeming improvement we have witnessed in recent time came only from the concessionaires.

APMT (MAERSK LINE OWNERS) perhaps have done more in 3years than the Nigerian Government has done in 20years.
If only Government Agencies will have business-like mentality of these private investors, if regulatory bodies will care-less about how much they can milk hapless importers dry and think of themselves as part of the solution, if customs will be more awake to their responsibilities and IF IMPORTERS WILL CONCEAL LESS, BE MORE PRONE TO PAYING CORRECT AND ACTUAL DUTIES, only then, can we hope for a friendly operational port.

I am a clearing agent, but I do not clear cars. I deal more in Industrial goods and machinery. So, I know what I am saying.

The part written by capital letters in your opinion seems to be the major cause of  congestion, now that they are about introducing e-payment for duties, do you think  that the perennial port congestion during yuletide will no longer exist after the introduction of the e-payment?

Update.  I just called my Agent who confirmed that the ship has finally been allowed to offload.  My truck should be out in about 3 days.  About time I say, about time.

While I understand that RORO is not applicable to Vehicles shipped out of Canada, In My Opinion, RORO is still the fastest form of Shipping Vehicles to Nigeria except for Extremely High Valued Vehicles which may cost a tooth to insure via RORO.

How many times have they ever tried to fix the port's corrupt system and they actually got within 3-day clearing process?
The money involved in this process is greater than any PRESIDENT can inhibit with a meager executive order/request.
Yar Adua better keep his mouth shut or he'll be showing the whole country there are those he has no authority over.
It is one thing for a President to have to repeat his order, it another for him to be ridiculed with no head rolling to show he is serious; if he knows what that is.
For Nigeria to get to the next level of economic growth, all the inhibitions to trade has to be removed, until then they are all joking.

I don't know yet. I called the freightforwarder and MSC yesterday, their reply is "there is still congestion in your country".

I do not think the congestion is costing the government $millions because of what I heard from my agent that Dangote has occupied a substantial part of the terminal for the discharge of his goods and other shipping lines lke Grilmadi that control their port operations. The government is still making its money while the shipping lines that cannot berth or discharge its goods are the loosers. The businessmen are counting their losses while the immigration and customs men are smilling to the banks.

My brother, it is a terrible situation for international trade.

You are not the only one experiencing the port congestion. 3 of my containers arrived Lagos on November 01, 2008 up till now they have not been cleared. I kept mute and a bit surprised when I read adverts on NL people making assertion of their delivery during the yuletide period. I thought may be, they are doing RORO because you are only allow in Canada to export your goods in container.

No doubt this annual congestion during the yuletide period has affected business a lot couple with the fact that the naira took a steep fall in value.

Three of my customers who  pre-ordered  their vehicles are asking for refund since I could not deliver as promised. The most annoying is the guy who wanted to make use of his pre-ordered Toyota Camry 2007 for his wedding in December 2008. I had thought the containers will be cleared as usual under 2-3 weeks in November and deliver to him for his wedding but alas the Nigerian factors steered me in the face and I was rendered useless, hopeless and  above all incapable of satisfying my customers. The purpose of buying a good car at a lower price by the "would be groom" has been defeated by this  man-made congestion.
I am at a loss on what to do because

Sure, you are right I get cars from auctions and I must confess in this 2004 Honda Odyssey transaction I am going to make a very minimal profit.

You are correct to say the 2004 odyssey is very difficult to get because the offer price is low. You need to understand that  dealers sell for various reasons not only for profit. My reason for accepting Obeledu's offer is to augment my working capital.
Your "honest" advice is incomplete and partial. You advised the buyer to be careful yet you failed to tell him the amount he can get a good 2004 Honda Odyssey. You are also partial by not advising me to make a counter offer more than Obeledu's budget if actually the car I am selling is indeed a good one.

Your advice is rather misplaced. You should concentrate your efforts in advising dealers on how to make more money and exceed customers budget.
