GTB management has come out openly to make confirmation to the total value of transactions processed via its USSD service – more than ₦1 trillion. Almost all the banks in Nigeria have their USSD service ranging from *737# to *945# to *901# and many more. USSD services have now turned the order of the day for most banking services, thereby making any bank without a USSD code look outdated to its e-oriented customers. GTB as we all know is a FinTech-focused bank, and its USSD service is the 737 platform which allows for primary online transactions on feature phones and smartphones. Considering the success rate of the 737 platform, MD Segun Agbaje believes other banks used GTB’s 737 success as a trigger to starting theirs. Agbaje stated that the flexibility of the platform –ability to work on any type of phone ranging from feature phones to windows phone to iPhones and Android phones- is one of the major reasons behind the platform’s success; unlike mobile apps that have limitation of some sort to customers. “Within a year of the introduction of the service, the bank recorded an uptake of over three million customers, with over N1 trillion in transaction on the platform. The platform had gained ubiquitous acceptance and global recognition,” said Agbaje. The USSD service has not only inspired other banks to roll out USSD services but it has also been a strong source of motivation for FinTech startups that become eager to have partnerships with telecoms companies. These startups seek this partnership in order to present USSD-based value-added services. They –startups- haven’t entirely been successful in these partnerships as the clients they are supposed to partner with prefer to open up channels to banks rather than the startups. Even Lanre Adeloye, co-founder of SaferMom –a health startup- commended the established companies and downplayed the success of startups in giving out USSD services owing to longer processes it may take them. Adeloye said, “Even when startups are able to raise the funds required, it often takes a longer time, a minimum of six weeks, before they can procure the short code. And after the short code has been paid for, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) can easily shut it down at will. Most VAS providers want to make quick money and they are always looking for companies who will launch a USSD service with high volume.” http://www.techproducts.com.ng/gtb-ussd-service-transacts-over-%e2%82%a61-trillion/ |
This seems to be a good sign for entrepreneurs because almost every now and then, there’s an opportunity to better their trade. And I want to believe the supposed acronym of P.O.O.R which is ‘Passing Over Opportunities Regularly’ won’t get to the nation’s entrepreneurs. The participating entrepreneurs of the Aso Villa Demo Day (AVDD) will have a lot to cheer about seeing that the World Bank has endorsed ₦756.3million for disbursement to these participants who are 81 in number. The endorsement from the World Bank came through the organization’s Growth and Employment (GEM) project. Nigeria benefitting from this program is a thing of elation. Aso Villa Demo Day (AVDD) is an initiative of the Presidency and was targeted at having the best Nigerians in innovation, technology and creativity celebrated. AVDD is an act of goodwill from the Presidency and to show support to the entrepreneurs of our age. AVDD was held in partnership with the World Bank’s Growth and Employment (GEM) project. It consisted of participants from across Nigeria and there was screening at AVDD’s regional pitch screening centers in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt. The participants were invited to the screening events and were asked to present their business plans at the location. The participants were 289 in number. Of all the 289 participants screened, 81 entrepreneurs were selected from different states all over the nation which includes : Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Cross River, Delta, FCT, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Osun, Oyo, Plateau and Rivers states. According to the World Bank, the GEM programme “is to further support the presidency’s drive to celebrate and empower the most promising and highly scalable indigenous technology start-ups who are providing innovative solutions to local challenges in Nigeria.” The 81 entrepreneurs will receive the money in two portions following the project’s conditions been met. Last year, AVDD was held with about thirty (30) startups. The 30 participants were chosen in order to pitch right in front of the President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari at Abuja. Three startups which included: Recycle Points; Shuttlers; and Tracology were awarded ₦3 million to improve their businesses. http://www.techproducts.com.ng/world-bank-allocates-%e2%82%a6756-3million-to-avdd-participants/ |
Yes, you saw that quite alright; with the aid of SimplePay, businesses can now accept payments via SMS links. With the advent of technology-improved business services, I see this great nation becoming a technology-driven nation. SimplePay, whose base is in Nigeria recently announced the launch of PayReminder, a payment solution via SMS which allows the payment of goods and services to be at extreme ease. The way this service works is that the SMSes sent to the clients have payment links embedded within which links the client to the payment method at a single click. Customers have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to payments and sometimes the options can be overwhelming. With PayReminder, the customer and merchant interface directly with each other and payment is made with just one click – no need for a sophisticated website, no need to go into an app to make payment, etc,” said SimplePay’s founder, Simeon Ononobi. SimplePay’s founder stated that “customers need solutions that will ease the way they make payment for products and services and businesses on the other hand want more solutions that will ease the way they do business.” Any business can make use of PayReminder. Using SMSes to remind your customers of payment will make PayReminder come in handy because it not only reminds the customers of their intending payment, but also gives them a link to make the payment ensuring easier access to reception of funds (this is what I call ‘ease of access’). Talk about gaining enough grip on the market, PayReminder is now in use by Lekki Concession Company (LCC) and other different companies who have huge customer bases. The feed-back from customers have been splendid. Making payment of funds to businesses extremely easy seems to be the drive that keeps SimplePay going. This is because PayReminder isn’t the first SMS solution that SimplePay have come up with; they came up with SimpleLink last year. SimpleLink is also similar to PayReminder in that it also has the features of payment links in which at a single click, the customer is directed to make payment, thereby enhancing the level at which businesses receive funds. http://www.techproducts.com.ng/simplepays-payreminder-receiving-payments-via-sms-links/ |
