I agree that the tech boom is yet to blow to the extent that even when virtually everyone is online in a way, many SMEs still don't think they need websites (and general online presence), at least the ones I've come across. When I said web designers "AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY" I was refering to all of us that majorly rely on CMSs (no offence) and not the whole web business. I am emphasizing the caveat now. Bro I can't be so blind as not to see the reality that web is the present and the future since virtually everything has moved or is moving online - applications that have priorly been stand-alone desktop software are moving, even OSs and computer storage.

Workaholics who frequently put in overtime raise the risk of heart disease by up to 80 percent according to a new study.

Scientists believed you are more likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes.

The combination of stress, raised blood pressure and unhealthy diets from working the long hours are putting thousands of people at risk of premature heart problems.

The latest finding discovered by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health was based on a recent meta-analysis which took into account the results of various studies over the last 50 years. Data were gathered from 12 different studies dating as far back as 1958, and involved 22,000 participants from Britain, the USA, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The team noted that the risks varied depending on how each study was carried out.

But the effects were more pronounced when participants were asked to recall their working hours.

Compared to those who worked the normal hours, employees that spent more than eight hours have a 40 to 80 percent greater chance of heart disease.

Lead researcher, Dr. Marianna Virtanen believed this could be due to 'prolonged exposure to stress'.

While other factors could be poor eating habits and lack of exercise because of the age-old reasoning – lack of time.

The latest finding was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

In 2009, Dr. Vitanen and her team had also discovered that long working hours increased the risk of dementia later in life.

The effect was akin to that of smoking. Middle-aged worker clocking in 55 hours or more a week had poorer brain function in comparison to those who worked no more than 40 hours. The former scored lower on tests to measure intelligence, short-term memory and word recall.

The situation in Nigeria

The working culture in Nigeria is such that we generally work more than the required eight hours daily. In fact a third of Nigerians spend over 11 hours at the office. Not only that nearly 50 percent of us tend to bring our work home more than three times a week.

What this means is that Nigeriacould be looking at serious health and economic problems in the long run.

The long-term toll on worker's health could be devastating and not to mention, overall productivity would soon be compromised.

If Nigerians were to contribute to the country's economy, we need to find a balance between work and good living.

Right now, it would seem that we don't have a choice but to work the extra hours to meet deadlines, career advancement, cost of living and of course, earn more money. However, bear in mind that healthy living is far better in the long run and everyone should at least try to practice a work-life balance.

Not every dollar spent is a poor decision. Not every purchase is a bad one. Not every expense is wasted.

In Accounting terms, there is a difference between a sunk cost and an investment. A sunk cost is money wasted, never to be recovered. But an investment is very different. An investment is money spent for the purpose of long-term (or short-term) gain. And while not every investment pays off in the long-run, some rewards are worth the risk.

I have found this to be a helpful distinction as I evaluate my spending and my purchases. Some purchases are worth the expense because they result in short or long-term gain—and I am not just talking about financial returns.

For example, many people will encourage you to invest in a quality bed and mattress. Healthy sleep is important because it provides the foundation and energy for how we spend our days. This seems like wise advice. Buying a quality bed is an investment into my life.

Additionally, I would argue that healthy food, quality running shoes, and opportunities to learn are also smart investments. They may cost a little bit more, but they improve our quality of life providing valuable returns. Some might include travel on the list—I tend to agree so long as experiencing and learning from new cultures accompanies it.

As might be expected, these investments vary from person to person. For me, as a writer, a working computer might be considered an investment. But the tools of a woodworker would be very different—even more a chef or a student or an airline pilot.

Unfortunately, many of the things we are sold these days are not investments. They are merely wasteful expenses—money that can never be recouped. They become a sunk cost as soon as we leave the store.

We are constantly told to upgrade our home size, our transportation, our appearance, or our means of entertainment. We are marketed unhealthy food as convenience and fast fashion as essential to success.

We are subtly convinced by a thousand different voices these purchases will improve our lives. But they rarely do. The happiness wears off almost immediately. And our only return on investment is regret.

Even worse, many of the things we purchase rob us not only of financial resources, they also steal our time and energy and focus. They redirect our attention from things that do matter and place it squarely on things that don’t.

There is another Accounting phrase called the “sunk cost trap.” Essentially, it warns against the tendency of people to irrationally follow through on an activity that is not meeting their expectations simply because of the time and/or money they have already spent on it. If a purchase made in the past is not providing its desired result, it is sunk. And other than the lessons learned, it should not be factored into future investments.

Patrick Nnamemeka Okorie, better
known as Patoranking is one young
artiste that has carved a niche for
himself among the dancehall artistes
in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The Ebonyi State indigene, spoke with Doyin Adeoye in this interview, about growing up in the ghetto, his career and style, among other things.
Foray into music, when did it all begin for you?
Actually, I started as a dancer. I
remember back then, I would dance to all genre of music. I started dancing as a child and I developed the passion for reggae as a dancer, so I decided to give reggae music a trial. So I went into music and professionally it has been five years now, and it has been fun.
Why reggae, there must have been
other genres of music to fall in love
with?
I was opportuned to only listen to
reggae songs while I was growing up. I danced to any kind of reggae music, such as galala, which has that reggae and dance hall fusion and that was how it all started for me.
How will you describe your style of
music?
My style of music is Patoranking style, it is that style that only Patoranking understands and could only be done by Patoranking. I try to carve a niche for myself and create a brand that nobody is doing, but just me. They could think of doing it, but they are not doing it. That is my style, I just like to be exceptional.
The track ‘Alubarika’ was received by a lot of people who are not even reggae fans, what inspired it?
‘Alubarika’ is a testimonial song and I think the idea behind it was just to
share my testimony through music. I
am a God-fearing person and like I
said in the beginning of the song, I
came from nothing to something. That was my story. Growing up from the slum wasn’t easy, although it is a
place where you have boundless
talents, but it wasn’t easy coming out from there.
So I am so grateful that everything
worked out for me; getting a deal,
getting recognition, so I felt the best
way to share my testimony was
through music. And everyone wants
‘Alubarika’; everyone wants God’s
blessings, so it was easy for many
people to relate with the song.
How was your childhood, growing up
in the ghetto?
I am the first born and like I said, I
grew up in Ebute Meta to be precise
and I am telling you again that it
wasn’t easy. If you see movies like
Omo Ghetto, then you’ll understand
what I’m talking about. It was an
experience anyone from there will never forget.
Coming from such background, how
did you get here, what were the
challenges faced?
It wasn’t easy. For instance, I am the
type of person that would have loved
to get quality education, but I wasn’t
opportuned to have that. I had to drop out of school and I also have younger ones that look up to me, so it was really challenging. But we thank God for everything, everything has changed, everyone is smiling and we are doing well.
What educational level did you attain
before dropping out of school?
I was in my second year at the
University of Cape Coast in Ghana,
where I was studying Information
Technology, before I dropped out. Prior to that, I attended Stepping Stone Nursery and Primary School, Satellite Town and Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School, Iponri.
Now that ‘Alubarika’ has come, do you intend to further your education?
Yes, Hopefully, I’ll be going back to
school soon. I thank God for the big
break and I just want to make many
more things happen and make more
money and then go back to school.
What thrills you most about being an
artiste?
I love passing positive messages
across to people. And also the new
lifestyle is really cool. People now
want to listen to you; the love and the
respect are overwhelming. I really
enjoy it.
For this genre of music, there must be musical heroes, who are they?
I really love and respect Bob Marley
and like I said on my twitter handle,
I’m the next big thing after Bob
Marley…
You think so?
I’m very positive about that. If you
watch the video for ‘Alubarika’ closely, you’d see Bob Marley’s picture in it.
So what makes you so positive that
you could step in the shoes of such a
music icon?
People tell me that a lot. A lot of
people look at me and say ‘Boy, you
are the next big thing after Bob
Marley.’ It is not something I came up with, so I just had to claim it by faith.
The percentage of music lovers that
support reggaes music is relatively low.
How do you think the genre can be
fully revived?
I think it is experiencing revival now,
because now, it seems everyone wants to do dance hall music, which is a genre under reggae. So I think in one way or the other, people are trying to do reggae. There is no song that you would hear that you won’t have that reggae feel in it.
If it is not in the lyrics, then you will
feel it on the beats. So, the acceptance is huge now. If they can dance to ‘Alubarika’ in clubs, then I see reggae genre in the Nigeria entertainment industry going places. I dropped ‘Girlie o’ and then a remix with Tiwa Savage and it has pushed my music to further heights. I am very greatful to God.
How did you come about the name
Patoranking?
I used to be called Patoraiko in school, when I was playing football. Then I remember one day I was at the Alpha Beach and there was this Jamaican man playing the guitar and I just decided to freestyle to the tune. And he looked me and said he saw something big in me.
So, for the respect he had for my
freestyle, he said he wished to change my name. I had told him I was Patoraiko and he changed the Raiko to Ranking and ranking in Jamaica means ‘highly respected’.
You used to be a member of the Dem
Mama Record label, did something go wrong?
Dem Mama Records is a family to me, but now I have a new deal with an international outfit. They came from South Africa, Foston Musik. We are making everything big. But I am still family with Dem Mama label, although I am now signed with Foston Musik.
There was no issue between us, it was an agreement between the two labels, so Dem Mama still remains family to
me.
There is a perception that associates
reggae artistes with marijuana. What is your take on this?
I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. And I
think, to me, it is all about the
mindset. Inspiration comes from God
alone and not man. God gave man the talent and He has his reasons for that. He can’t give you something that will not be convenient for you. So I believe people are lying when they say they get inspired when they smoke weed. I don’t believe in it.
Do you have any album in sight?
I am working on a project and I can’t
say for now when I’ll eventually drop
the album.
What is your advice for young reggae
artistes?
It is just about doing good music and
doing the right thing. With this, you
will be heard, there is no two way
about it. Try to be different, be unique
in your own ways and try to look
good.

The Oba of lagos was out of tune for that statement but from the video I saw, he sounded very angry and this might be connected to statements credited to the igbos that lagos is no man's land.

I am constrained to write you these few paragraphs consequent upon some happenings in the country as a whole and Lagos in particular.

Nigerians and indeed the Yorubas are not forgetful beings afterall, but specially made people who forgive whenever they are convinced that the person involved in a controversial act has shown a level of remorse. This was demonstrated immediately after the conclusion of the Presidential elections held days ago. You would recall that apart from the fact that our national dailies were adorned with headlines such as , “Buhari wins as Jonathan declared a Hero” , “President Jonathan, a Statesman” etc, FaceBook and other social media sang his praises. If the truth must be told, President Jonathan tried hard to scuttle our nascent democracy ranging from sponsoring of hate campaigns on AIT, STV and NTA, encouraging ethnic militias like OPC and MASSOB to embark on dangerous protests, conceiving of Interim National Government (ING) and a host of other despicable moves. However, because President Jonathan could digest the political equations, he promptly conceded defeat to President-Elect, Gen Buhari (rtd) even before the final results were announced. Today, Nigerians extol him!

Regrettably, the ethnic militia group which you head, OPC, can’t still understand that the CHANGE we collectively asked for has finally come. The memory of your ignoble role in the ‘Jega-Must-Go’ protest of Lagos on March 16, 2015 still lingers on. At inception, if I am not mistaking though, OPC was not just formed primarily to defend Yoruba Heritage and Institutions but to also strive hard to ensure that the Yorubas both at home and in the Diaspora remain united. To achieve this, it was believed that OPC would remain apolitical. I am happy to inform you that all is not lost yet, just like your financier, President Jonathan, you can still win the support of the Yorubas if only you can follow my advice and get same implemented within the next 2 or 3 days. I mean that you have a big opportunity to right your wrong by embarking on a similar protest just like the one of March 16, 2015. This time, it is in solidarity with Oba of Lagos.

Please recall that lately, Oba Akiolu has been under fire for bemoaning the Ibos for the explicit and implicit moves to divide Lagos and Lagoisians on their erroneous believe that ‘Lagos is no man’s land’. This singular statement is an affront to the good people of Yoruba land who have been well situated in the South-Western part of the country and the peace loving Yorubas of Lagos who have done much for over five decades to accommodate and show love to their Hausa and Ibo guests. Additionally, for the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Jimi Agbaje, to have said that he would raise the status of Eze Indigbo to that of first class Oba in Lagos is simply an aberration. Probably, the Oba reacted based on accumulated moves of the Indigbos to belittle our much cherished Traditional Institution in Lagos.

To you Otunba Gani Adams, here is a golden opportunity at your doorstep. I advise you not to waste any further time in grabbing it. OPC being an acclaimed protector of Yoruba Heritage and Institutions should embark on a solidarity protest for the Oba and condemn in unequivocal terms, the speech made by Jimi Agbaje to undermine the Office of Oba of Lagos. I am elephant sure that if you could do this quickly, Lagosians and the entire Yorubas are ready to overlook your past misdeeds and you would have rest of mind to enjoy the millions of Naira booty you cornered from Mr. Jonathan, the then Mr. Shoeless/Clueless.
