Politics114bn Suit: Court Stops Mastercard From Issuing National Identity Cards by jaybenugo(op): 6:54am On Nov 18, 2019
114bn suit: Court stops Mastercard from issuing National Identity cards, warns 22 banks

IgbereTV reports that Mastercard and its agents have been ordered to stop issuing the Nigeria’s National Identity card by Justice R.M. Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The ex parte, which also include an Anton Piller order, followed a motion by Chams Plc and Chams Consortium Limited (CCL) filed on August 28, 2019.

In their statement of claim, the appellants are asking Mastercard to pay the sum of N114billion for damages.

Other defendants in the case include Ajay Banga, President & Chief Executive Mastercard international, Omokehinde Ojomuyide, Country Representative of Mastercard in Nigeria, Daniel Monehin, staff of Mastercard, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and 22 commercial banks as respondents.

The order of the court states inter alia, “An order of interim injunction restraining the defendants, whether acting by themselves or by their directors, officers, servants, agents, technical managers, or otherwise however from further manufacturing, producing, designing and or printing or authorizing the manufacturing, production, designing and or printing of any National Identity Card with Mastercard logo as described in paragraph 16 of the supporting affidavit in Exhibit CC9 pending the determination of the motion on notice filed for hearing,”

A similar order was given to 22 respondent banks in Nigeria restraining them from honouring or giving effect to any transaction from Mastercard.

The Anton Piller order has empowered the prosecuting solicitor Kemi Pinheiro SAN of Pinheiro LP, Inspector General of Police (IG) or any senior police officer not below the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police to search any of their premises, take into possession and remove any document relating to the said affidavit.

They are also empowered to inspect, take pictures or arrest any body found to be contravening the orders of the court.

A breakdown of the Statement of Claim shows that N84billion is for special damages as a result of loss of expected revenue for 8 years, N10billion for general damages of fraud perpetrated jointly and severally against the claimants and N20billion for inducing the breach and termination of the Concessions awarded to the Claimants by 3rd Defendant which occurred as a result of the 1st and 2nd Defendants’ fraudulent actions.

In 2006, Chams was invited by the Federal Government to bid for the National ID project. It competed and emerged the preferred bidder for the Nigeria National Identity Card (NIC) concession.

Before and upon the execution of a concession agreement with the NIMC, Chams Plc pursued the implementation of the NIC concession by incorporating Chams Consortium Limited (CCL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) with the sole purpose of implementing the NIC concession.

Chams Plc also invited Mastercard to work with the Chams Consortium as one of its technical partners on the NIC concession.

However, Mastercard allegedly went on to collude with others using technical information and design shared with them by Chams to frustrate the concession won by Chams and the more than US$100m Chams/CCL invested in the project.

In an open letter published earlier in the year to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chams PLC and CCL asked Mastercard to accept wrongdoing, apologize for the breach of contract and pay compensation to CCL and Chams Plc for their more than US$100m Investment and accumulated losses.

EducationFemale Muslim Students Have Constitutional Right To Use Hijab – Sultan by jaybenugo(op): 6:33am On Nov 18, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State, said female Muslim students across the country have the constitutional right to use Hijab in schools. He, therefore, enjoined parents to always demand for their rights, whenever they are being denied within the ambit of the law. The Sultan said this while speaking at the 4th General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria (MUSWEN), themed, “Muslim Unity and Contemporary Political Challenges in Nigeria”, held at the University of Ibadan.

Muslim leaders present at the event included the Executive Secretary MUSWEN, Professor Daud Noibi, Chairman, Board of Trustee, MUSWEN, Prince Bola Ajibola, whose speech was read by Chairman, Muslim Community in Oyo State, Alhaji Kunle Sanni, former Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, former INEC National Commissioner, Professor Lai Olurode among others.

The Sultan however cautioned those advocating for the use of Hijab and various organisations championing the welfare of Muslims in the country to seek redress in a peaceful manner instead of open confrontations. “Muslims must be law abiding, the moment we are attacking each other, then there will be no peace. So we need peace. And we have been doing our own in silence. I urge all of you to be law abiding. The issue is at the court and since it is in the court, we can’t make further statement, so that we don’t commit contempt of the court. “Demand for your rights within the ambit of the law. I urge all of you to be patient because Almighty Allah loves patient people. On the issue of Hijab at the university, there are some organizations that are advocating for it, let them continue advocating, but at our own level we have been doing ours silently. “In the constitution, we have freedom of religion. If my religion allows me to wear Hijab, nobody should stop me. So our politicians and leaders must know that’’.

BusinessTiamin Rice Invests $13.4m To Produce 1,520 Tonnes Daily by jaybenugo(op): 5:49am On Nov 06, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the yesterday, the Managing Director of Tiamini Rice Mill Limited, Aminu Ahmed said that an additional sum of $13,370,500 has been invested by Tiamin Rice Mill Limited to raise its production capacity from the current 320 tonnes to 1,520 tonnes per day.

Mr Ahmed made this known when he led the management team of the company on a courtesy call on the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, in his office in Abuja.

The MD said the policy of the present administration, especially the ban on smuggling and the interventions given to them by the Central Bank of Nigeria, have helped immensely in boosting local production of rice.

Mr Ahmed that the company which was established in 2016 in Kano started production of rice in 2018 with 320 tonnes per day would expand its existing production line from 320 tonnes to 920 tonnes next year, while a new production line would start production of 600 tonnes per day in Bauchi by May 2020.

He said, “We are now investing $13,370,500 to boost our production capacity to 1,520 tonnes per day. Already we have placed orders for all the machinery needed, and all arrangements are on top gear to meet the deadline we have set. By next year, we plan to become the biggest rice producers not only in Kano but in the whole country. Our watchword is quality and affordability. We produce one of the finest brands in Nigeria that can compete with foreign rice brands in terms of quality.

Mr Ahmed said that the durability of the Indian machines was secret behind the quality of Tiamin Rice. He then thanked the Indian High Commission for its support and sought further cooperation in the areas of easing trade relations between his company and Indian partners.

The high commissioner thanked Tiamin Rice for the courtesy call, and also for patronising Indian machines. Mr Thakur expressed hope that the policy of boosting local production would be sustained beyond the present administration to enable local industries in the country to grow.

While speaking to journalists after the visit, the Managing Director of Tiamin Rice expressed his appreciation to the federal government for their support in local rice production and to the state governments for the enabling environments given to the company.

PoliticsOshiomhole: President Buhari Can Rule From Anywhere by jaybenugo(op): 9:49pm On Nov 05, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomole has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari can preside over Nigeria from wherever he is anywhere in the world.

He made this statement during a courtesy visit to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday. His comments was based on the criticisms some Nigerians gave to the president's signing of an amended Nigerian law in the UK where he is currently on a private visit.

Mr Buhari had embarked on a private two weeks visit to the UK. He did not hand over power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo before his trip, indicating he would continue to exercise presidential functions from the UK.

Mr Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, on Monday, flew to London to submit a new bill on offshore oil fields to the president for assent.

Many Nigerians condemned the move, wondering why taxpayer’s funds would be used to fly Mr Kyari to London for a function that could have simply been ceded to the vice president.

On Tuesday, while Mr Oshiomhole expressed satisfaction that the amended
Deep Offshore Act was signed into law in London, he said it shows the president can rule the nation from anywhere.

“I think by signing into law at the Nigerian House in London, it shows that wherever the president is, he is presiding over Nigeria and with the benefit of modern technology we have passed the Mongo Park era.

“So signing it in London for me has also made several statements. Namely, that wherever national interest is involved, the president is on duty and wherever he is he is presiding. I also salute his assenting to the Bill as fast as he did and even at the Nigerian House in London,” he said.

The party chairman commended the Senate for the way they passed the bill.

He also noted that while he was president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, he was “completely non-partisan” and attempts were made to amend the law but “the lobby group as represented by the IOCs, have appeared to be so strong that they have overwhelmed the National Assembly over the years.”

“On a lighter note, I will say that when the oil companies come lobbying, the entire environment can be quite oily and you know to walk firm on oily platforms is a statement of courage, integrity, commitment to national interest and your will to ensure that you put Nigeria’s interest first before any other consideration. Including even individual temptation,” he said. He also commended lawmakers of opposing parties for their cooperation in the passage of the bill.

“It is this difference that I believe the National Assembly under your leadership across party divide has brought to bear. Nigerians ought to celebrate you… We celebrate the PDP members because we monitored the debate and there is no evidence that any party is divided. National interest was at play,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr Lawan noted that part of his campaign was to work for Nigerians and that is what the Senate is doing. He said the national assembly will ensure that the budget is passed by the end of the year.

“We expect that we pass the budget at the end of this year, before the year runs out. But next year going forward, we have other very compelling and important and significant legislations – the Petroleum Industry Bill.

“We want to deal with these decisively and expeditiously because we believe that the petroleum industry in Nigeria needs to have proper legislative framework to ensure that we maintain the businesses that have decided to come to our country,” he said. He assured that the IOCs have nothing to fear as it is going to be a plain level field.

He said, “They will have their day to suggest what they think it should be like but one thing is that we must ensure that Nigeria receives the appropriate revenue and rewards from its endowments.

He said, “It may interest you to know that Nigeria receives $268 million only, before this amendment. After the amendment when the bill will start to operate, at $55 to a barrel, Nigeria will receive about $1.5 billion. Going up to $60 (per barrel) it will be close to $2 billion. That is a monumental quantum leap actually."

PoliticsWhoever Steals Yam Will Be Isolated Till Death – Enugu Monarch by jaybenugo(op): 2:46pm On Nov 03, 2019
IgbereTV reports that a popular Enugu Monarch, Eze Oha 1 of Amoji Nike (Eze Ogakwu Ijala), Dr Titus Okolo, has in a interview made available to IgbereTV revealed the acts considered as taboo in his Kingdom and the subsequent punishment that go with them.

Also the Chairman of Traditional Rulers’ Council in Enugu East, Dr. Titus Okolo surprisingly became a king while his father was still alive.

The Monarch has been a civil servant and a teacher before becoming a traditional ruler. In the interview, he revealed that he was shocked when he was given the approval to ascend the throne especially due to the fact that his father was still alive but after some prayers, they believed it was the will of God.

The Monarch also revealed that contrary to what people think, that no rites or rituals was done as he took up the crown in 2002 because his installation was based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Speaking on what was considered a taboo in Amoji Nike, the Monarch said, “There are many: if you steal yam, you will be isolated till you die.”

“Stealing of yam is a grievous crime because a man should cultivate his farm and have his own yam. So why should he steal when he has his.”

Another one is making love to a woman in her husband’s house. If you are caught, you pay heavily for it. It’s taboo to steal; it’s taboo to tap palm wine belonging to someone else. No one should kill their fellow citizen.

PoliticsPresidency Warns Nigerians To Be At Alert As Bandits Are Heading To The South by jaybenugo(op):
IgbereTV reports that Nigerians have been warned to be at alert to prevent attacks from bandits.

This warning was given by Dr Amina Shamaki, the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). She made the statement while speaking at the Federal and States Security Administrator’s Meeting in Jalingo.

Dr. Amina warned Nigerians to be on guard as bandits are fleeing to other states following the counter-attack launched by security operatives in Katsina and Zamfara states. The Permanent Secretary also urged security operatives to be proactive to prevent bandits from actualizing their plans.

Dr. Amina said: “The massive November of armed bandits is an indication that those unrepentant bandits are making efforts to escalate the menace to other areas.

“We appeal to other states across the country to dialogue with repentant bandits just like Zamfara as the north-central and south-west states have started experiencing upsurge in kidnap incidents.
