HealthBreaking: Coronavirus Hits USA by jaybenugo(op): 11:28pm On Jan 26, 2020
IgbereTV reports that US health authorities on Sunday said there are now five confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and more are expected.

Nancy Messonnier, head of the respiratory disease section at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said around 100 people in 26 states are being investigated for the virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Of the confirmed cases, all five people had traveled to Wuhan, Messonier said during a conference call with reporters.

“Every case we have had in the United States is someone who has had direct contact in Wuhan,” she said.

Messonier said there are two cases in California and one each in Arizona, Illinois and Washington state. Until now the toll was three.

While Chinese officials have launched an extraordinary emergency response, Messonier insisted that the health risk for Americans, in general, remains low “at this time.”

PoliticsBuhari Orders Airforce To Fight Bandits, Kidnappers In Niger State by jaybenugo(op): 8:53pm On Jan 26, 2020
As the harmattan dust subsides, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Air Force to be ready this week, as they are to battle bandits, kidnappers and cattle rustlers in remote communities around Dogon Gona forest in Niger State, IgbereTV reports.

The President, who described the repeated attacks leading to the losses of several lives in the communities “as a disaster for the nation,” had authorized the deployment of air power to support troops and policemen deployed to the “difficult terrain,” to counter the menace of the attackers operating in the forest area bordering Kaduna, Niger and Zamfara states.

In line with this directive, the Nigerian Air Force is setting up refueling facilities at Minna, Niger State to support the aircraft operations, giving assurances that given the improved weather conditions, a major exercise to “visually acquire targets” and launch attacks will soon follow.

The Police Command in Niger has equally given assurances that the planned dedicated air raids to complement the police helicopter gunship operations remain the best approach given the lack of motorized roads in the areas constantly under attack.

I Will Rather Share My Husband With A Side Chic Than Lose Him – Shina Peter’s Wife

IgbereTV reports that Wife of Afro Juju music legend Sir Shina Peters, Sammie Peters has revealed that she is open to sharing her husband to side chics rather than losing him.

The beautiful wife of the musical talisman recently celebrated her 60th birthday party penultimate week in Lagos. It was a lavish affair with pomp and pageantry. Speaking during an interview at their Lagos home, Sammie Peters revealed that their marriage had been intact despite all odds because she decided to understand what makes her kind of marriage work.

“I’m married to a musician and I knew from the beginning that women don’t allow musicians to rest. The journey of marriage has been hectic, beautiful, challenging but never rocky. I’ve never thought of divorce in the union and neither has my husband.

She was asked about side chics who likely frolick with her husband, she replied with: “That has not affected my marriage. I’d always said and believed that I’d rather share my husband than lose him to any other woman. That has always been my stance even as a young wife. This is not to encourage my husband or other husbands out there to cheat on their wives, but I adopted that attitude to stay happy and not develop high blood pressure. What I cannot change, I pray to God and He answers me. Nothing my husband does affects me. My love for him is unconditional and nothing can separate me from my husband. I understand him perfectly, we love each other and he has always respected me.

He has never brought another woman to our matrimonial home. I love my husband, I would always love him and I don’t think the love will reduce no matter what happens to us.”

PoliticsYuletide: Gov. Umahi Orders Payment Of Workers Salaries By Dec. 23 by jaybenugo(op): 5:06am On Dec 23, 2019
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has directed the Office of the Accountant-General of the state to pay the salaries of workers in the state on or before noon December 23, IgbereTV reports.

The governor gave the order on Sunday in Abakaliki during the 2019 special thanksgiving service of Government House Chapel, Abakaliki.

Being unhappy with the delay in the payment of salaries for December, he, therefore, directed the accountant-general, Mrs Christiana Ukwuta, to ensure that workers got their salaries to enable them to prepare for the Christmas celebration.

Also, he ordered that salaries of state university and colleges of education be paid too. The governor said that the state government had always paid workers’ salaries by the 15th of every month and worried why that of December was delayed.

“With all sincerity, I apologise to our civil servants for the delay over the payment of your salaries.

“It is the fault of the accountant-general because I had never paid salaries later than December 10th every year, its sad to hear,” Umahi said.

Meanwhile, Umahi has encouraged the Christian faithful to step up their prayer lives and show more commitment to God to be able to attract more blessings.
He applauded the Christian faithful for their contributions to the poor in society.
He also commended government officials for their support in the development of the state.

He expressed optimism that the state would experience greater development and growth in 2020.

Eunice Oyeyemi, the Government House Chaplain, said that the rapid development and progress made by the state showed that it had found grace from God.

Oyeyemi encouraged Christians to always show gratitude and thanksgiving to God for more blessings, saying that praises provoke more blessings from God.

“When you give thanks to God, you provoke him for more blessings,” Oyeyemi said.
She further encouraged Christians to also assist the less privileged in society.

IgbereTV reports that the event attracted top government officials and security chiefs in the state, among other dignitaries.

LiteratureAchebe Gets Honoured At UNN, Six Years After His Demise by jaybenugo(op): 8:40pm On Dec 22, 2019
Six years after the demise of Chinua Achebe, the Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) built the Chinua Achebe Literary Court and unveiled a burst in honour of the great literary icon, at the front of the Faculty building and at the arts theatre complex

IgbereTV reports that the author of Things Fall Apart was the toast at this year’s Distinguished Personality Lecture of Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The third in the series, the event held on Thursday, December 12.

Coincidentally, his recognition came on a day another distinguished son of his community, Ogidi, Anambra State, Emeka Ken Nwabueze, was honoured as 2019 Arts Man of the Year by the Faculty.

Nwabueze, a former Special Adviser to the U.S. President and the Ajie Okpala Ogidi (first son of Ogidi), was also selected to give the lecture.

The Dean of Arts, Prof Nnanyelugo Okoro, had told guests at the occasion that Achebe was a literary maestro who impacted African literature and would ever be remembered.

He said: “As I speak, the Department of English and Literary Studies of this university has introduced a course entitled, Studies in Achebe, which is solely on the writer’s work. This is the first time in our history that this kind of recognition is being granted to a non-European author. That laudable effort would soon be replicated in other Nigerian universities.”

He said: “To complement the above, we are here proposing for the establishment of Chinua Achebe Study Centre to be domiciled at the University of Nigeria. A professor whose chair would be endowed by an institution, a corporate organisation, a foundation or an individual, as the case may be, would head that Centre.

“Considering Achebe’s stature and his great contributions to global letters, that Centre will attract scholars from all over the world who would be here to impact our students and generate revenue that will be used to develop our dear country. We would need all the help both in the establishment of the centre and in the endowment of the professorial chair.”

It was a moment to relish for the Ogidi people who gathered at the event as Nwabueze commissioned the facilities. He described Achebe as a ‘true son of Ogidi.’

“We are extremely happy with this honour and would do all in our power to ensure that the University did not regret this honour, because Chinua Achebe can never die,” he said.

Speaking as a guest lecturer, Nwabueze, who was President George Bush’s Special Adviser on Science and Technology, said he was ready to partner with the University on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Entrepreneurship Studies.

Speaking on the topic, Re-engineering Igbo Apprenticeship Model In An Era of Digital Economy, he noted that the Igbo apprenticeship model was being credited world wide as one of the key factors for the creation of much wealth in South Eastern Nigeria mostly among non university graduates.

“This model is responsible for why there are more billionaires in Southeast Nigeria than any other part of Africa. We can comfortably say that many of today’s billionaires in Southeast Nigeria, business magnets like Chisco, Innoson, Coscharis and many others are products of the apprenticeship model. Igbo apprenticeship is a model that needs to be studied, analysed and innovated to keep up with changes in business environment and technological advancement.”

He said, “Igbo Apprenticeship Model is the most successful, largest and longest running business incubation model ever known to mankind. It is also the longest and perhaps the largest informal venture capitalist system in the world. Here is another face about Igbo Apprenticeship Model that may surprise you. It is the most effective system in the world for reducing mass scaled inequality and for elimination of abject poverty in any society. This system of building wealth surprisingly does not promote extreme capitalism, nor does it support socialism.”

Identifying what he described as current problems with Igbo Apprenticeship Model, he noted that inadequate legal structure was top of the list with current issues of integrity of the legal system in Africa, arguing that it had become largely ineffective due to years of moral decay and acts of sabotage among major stakeholders in the apprenticeship system.

He said there was no effective legal mechanism to sanction violators, adding that the model was unrecognised, broadly informal without a defined vocational profile or framework.

Nwabueze also explained that as a hotelier, he had made a head way in using the Igbo Apprenticeship Model to create employment and a process of digital economy for the benefits of the youth similar to apprenticeship.

He explained, “In my hotel we use a lot of bath soap which we import from China or buy from another company but I discovered that if we set out soap manufacturing firm we can produce the ones we use in our hotel and also sell it in the market, so I engaged five people in business of soap production. They started like apprentice and they are growing to another level where that can add more products in the line.”

He said that the factor that made Igbo apprenticeship model successful was not just the financial gain but equally the need to assist kinsmen, adding, “you cannot re-engineer the Igbo Apprenticeship Model without taking the Nwaobi concept (kindred) into consideration.”

He stressed on the need for creativity and innovations in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) towards getting the wealthy businessmen to act out of the box, stressing, “in a situation where the rich men are rigid and not ready to act out of the box, then there is need create a new concept, I would you give any businessman a favorable concept he will buy into and invest his money right away and that is where creativity and innovations come in.”

Turning to the University, he said: “I have seen what is on ground, the structures, potential and the capacity, and I am highly impressed. I believe together we can do a lot of things in the area of ICT and Entrepreneurship but we have to first and foremost develop the concept that will drive us to bring of the youth and tell the rest of the world that Nigerian youth are not lazy. Yes money and time are needed but the most important value is the concept. It is not about structure nor is building it about concept. Some governors have contacted me that they want to build something like Silicon Valley, but I told them that Silicon Valley is not about building it is about concept.”

Vice Chancellor of the University, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor on Academics, Professor James Ogbonna, said the university was fortunate to play host to an illustrious personality like Nwabueze, who has travelled round the world, noting that his capacity and will are highly appreciated by the school.

Among the attendees at the event were traditional rulers of Ogbunike, Majesty Igwe John Umenyiora, that of Atani, His Majesty Igwe Augustine Azuka Ngoddy and that of Obukpa His Majesty Igwe Asadu.

Opinion: Will The Rich Make Heaven?

By Nweke Ugochukwu

Christianity may not be really easy as many will think

Let us look at the story of Jesus and the rich young man in the Bible

Matthew 19:23-26
Parallel versions appear in Mark 10:24-27, and Luke 18:24-27

"I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

The saying was a response to a young rich man who had asked Jesus what he needed to do in order to inherit eternal life. Jesus replied that he should keep the commandments, to which the man stated he had done. Jesus responded, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." The young man became sad and was unwilling to do this. Jesus then spoke this response, leaving his disciples astonished.

A characteristic of human nature is the uncontrollable desire to accumulate property and wealth. What seems to have begun as a simple but necessary self-preservation instinct, storing supplies for the days of scarcity, is uncontrollably unleashed in a compulsion for the accumulation of wealth, which goes beyond what we really need to live a comfortable and secure life.

The prevailing economic style of our consumer society takes full advantage of this weakness of character and we get bombarded with advertising and promotion of lifestyles that only a few can achieve and maintain.

Competitiveness, which has also been instilled from our earliest infancy is combined with this merciless advertisement attack to make us bend our knees before the despicable idol of money.

The book of Proverbs 28:20 says: A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

Jesus warned in Luke 12:15: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

The apostle Paul also said in 1 Timothy 6:9-10: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

I will like everyone reading this, especially the christians to ponder on these questions:

Does It mean that the rich may not enter the kingdom of God?

Can being rich prevent one from entering God's kingdom?

Can the rich today, give out all his personal belongings to the poor as Jesus advised?

PoliticsECOWAS: Buhari Calls For Sustained Collaboration In Fighting Terrorism by jaybenugo(op): 7:15pm On Dec 21, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has called for sustained collaboration among member countries of the ECOWAS in the fight against cross-border terrorism.

The Nigerian leader made the call at the 56th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority Heads of State and Government in Abuja on Saturday, IgbereTV reports.

He stated that the call had become imperative in view of the fact that terrorism had remained the major threat to the peace and progress of the sub-region.

Buhari observed that the recurring attempts by terrorist groups had reminded the ECOWAS leaders and all peace-loving citizens of the urgency to build an enduring security partnership to confront them.

The Nigerian leader called for a minute silence in honour of victims of terrorist attacks in the Tilabari Region of Niger Republic, where over 70 soldiers and other citizens were killed by the terrorists.

He said: “It was with great shock and immense pain that I received the news of the tragedy last week in the Tilabari Region of Niger Republic, where over 33 valiant soldiers and other citizens of the country were brutally massacred in yet another cowardly terrorist attack by these enemies of peace and progress.

“As we mourn this enormous loss, our thoughts and sympathies go to the families of these heroes and the entire people of Niger Republic.”

Buhari restated Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration and stressed the need for the regional leaders to always channel their energies towards realising new strategies and initiatives.

He expressed the hope that such initiatives would accelerate the attainment of regional aspirations for sustainable peace, security, stability and inclusive economic growth.

“To achieve these, we must put our people at the heart of our policies,” he said.

In his opening address, the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and President of Republic of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, highlighted the dangers posed by terrorist groups to people and economy of the member-states.

Issoufou, who also ordered for a minute silence for those soldiers killed by terrorists in his country, Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria, said ECOWAS member-countries must come together to fight terrorism to a standstill for meaningful developments in the sub-region.

He said: “The creation of a common area of peace, security and economic intergration is without the slightest doubt the key to the future of our region.

“Current regional and global developments in security, constraint me to dwell on the security situation of our region.

“Our region has been hard hit by terrorist attacks every passing day, threatening almost all the national and regional achievements we have made.

“We therefore hope that the prompt implementation of the recommendations of our extraordinary summit on terrorism held on September 14 in Ouagadougou will enable us collectively meet this challenge, which appears to be an attack by faithless criminals, on our dignity and Sovereignty.

“The terrorist attacks continually test our commitment to fighting the scourge.

“It is therefore incumbent upon us to respond to all these attacks with firmness and determination,”

In his remarks, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, commended the regional leaders for their continued efforts at promoting socio-economic developments of the sub-region.

He, however, alerted the leaders on the increasing threats posed by the activities of violent groups across member countries of the commission.

Also speaking at the event, the President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, narrated the achievements of the Bank over the past four years.

He revealed that the Bank was rated as the fourth most transparent institution globally last year.

“The African Development Bank was rated number one – together with the World Bank and the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization (GAVI) – by the Multilateral Organization Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN) that ranks global institutions for their fitness for purpose.

Adesina, who expressed delight over the partnership between the African Development Bank and the ECOWAS Commission, said in the past four years, the bank had helped to support 18 million people connected to electricity and 141 million people with access to agricultural technologies for food security.

PoliticsCITAD: We Tracked 387 Hate Speech On Social Media In November by jaybenugo(op): 4:38pm On Dec 08, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has said it tracked a total of 387 Hate speech on Facebook and Twitter handles in Nigeria in November.

This was made known to the public by Hamza Ibrahim, CITAD Coordinator, Countering Hate Speech Project, at a Post-Gubernatorial Election Press briefing organised by the Centre and supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) on Thursday in Lokoja.

Ibrahim said, “Our analysis established that the speech instances occur in textual, video, pictorial and symbolic forms and 32 per cent of the offending species were ethnic-based while 26 per cent were election-related,” he said.

According to Ibrahim, ethnic-based and election-based, dominated the list, beating religion-based hate speech which used to top the list in the last two months.

He said, “We want to specifically draw the attention of the entire people of Kogi to the dangers and consequences of hate speech and therefore urge that they neither engage in or accommodate hate speech on social media platforms or at community gatherings.”

PoliticsDapo Abiodun Says Anthony Joshua Displayed The Excellent Traits Of Ogun People by jaybenugo(op):
IgbereTV reports that Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has congratulated the world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua. He said that the Ogun State-born boxer has done the nation proud by reclaiming all the titles in the re-match with his opponent, Andy Ruiz Jr.

He also lauded Joshua for his determination, hard work, resilience and focus, which he described as virtues ingrained in the DNA of Ogun people.

The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin on Sunday, said, “I congratulate Anthony on this successful outing.

“May he continue with the winning streak ad infinitum.

“The world heavyweight championship in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night, kept sleep away from the eyes of many admirers of AJ worldwide, especially, people of Ogun State.

“The Sagamu-born boxer outclassed Andy Ruiz Jr over 12 rounds to compensate them and reassured us that hard work pays.

“My joy is unquantifiable; our government has always classified sports as not only a unifying factor but [also as] socio-economic imperative.”

The governor attributed the rematch outcome to the manifestation of God’s love for the people of the state who, he said, prayed ceaselessly for AJ that the nightmarish experience of New York earlier in the year be reversed.

He added, “God still answers prayers. We return all glory to God almighty for granting our hearts’ desires and ceaseless prayers for our brother, Anthony Joshua, to regain the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.

“All of us in the state, irrespective of our religious affiliations, prayed for his success.

“That the feat happened in Saudi Arabia doubly excites me. God answered us.

According to the governor, Joshua has made us proud by exhibiting these traits and the ‘can-do spirit’ of Ogun people.

“This victory should inspire other aspiring champions of Ogun State origin to do more.

“On our part, we will provide the necessary incentives to all our ambitious young men and women to become world champions in all considerable areas of sports, not only in boxing.

“We are poised to fix our stadia, upgrade facilities, train sportsmen and women, motivate coaches and develop talents, starting from the grassroots.”

TravelFederal Government To Introduce A New Visa Policy by jaybenugo(op): 1:18pm On Dec 08, 2019
IgbereTV reports that the Comptroller General (CGI) of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, has revealed plans by the Federal Government to introduce a new Visa policy in Nigeria.

Babandede made the announcement at the weekend during the NIS dinner in Abuja. He said:

“The e-visa policy will encourage investors to Nigeria thereby generating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for Nigeria and making Nigeria a most preferred destination through transparency in administration and facilitation of facilities by service.

“I assure you that it will be transparent and we will remove cash payment and ensure no security is compromised. It is a balance between facilitation, transparency and protection of national security”.

The C-G commended the team who developed the software for officers to take e- examinations.

“As you are aware, we are a regimented institution. We have done all we can in 2019 by dismissing officers for corruption, absenteeism, reduction of ranks of officers and investigating those who took money from applicants or ordinary Nigerians illegally.

“So having worked tirelessly, we should dedicate a day to commend those who have served well and this would also serve as an example to others so they can follow the part.

“Governance is not about punishing people every day. It is also about rewarding and bridging gaps between officers and men by coming together dining, dancing and rejoicing,” he said.

Foreign AffairsTrump Undergoes Medical Examination by jaybenugo(op):
US President Donald Trump, at the weekend, was at Walter Reed National Medical Center for medical tests, his ninth visit to the hospital since taking office.

From reports reaching IgbereTV through the CNBC, the appointment wasn’t made public although the businessman’s 2018 and February 2019 physicals appeared on his public schedule.

Press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, said Trump, 73, was “anticipating a very busy 2020” and took advantage of a free time Washington to fulfill his annual routine checkup.

She did not specify which tests her boss had received but disclosed that the president had “a quick exam and labs”.

“The President remains healthy and energetic without complaints, as demonstrated by his repeated vigorous rally performances in front of thousands of Americans several times a week,” she said.

“He visited with medical staff to share his thanks for all the outstanding care they provide to our Wounded Warriors, and wish them an early happy Thanksgiving,” Grisham added.

Trump’s last checkup was supervised by Dr. Sean P. Conley and involved a panel of 11 specialists.

Results then showed that Trump weighed 243 pounds — up seven pounds from September 2016, before he became president.

At 6 feet, 3 inches tall, his weight passed the official mark for being considered obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30.4.

Trump reportedly doesn’t drink alcohol or smoke, but enjoys fast food, steaks and desserts. His primary form of exercise is golf.
