As much as we appreciate the constant hit makers, there’s always a special place in our hearts for those who only dropped one hit and then partially or totally fades away. Their songs become National anthem over night and then its like you are now using torch light to look for them in the dark. Check the list below: 1. Jazzman Olofin – Raise The Roof Defunct X-Appeal member, Jazzman Olofin featured Adewale Ayuba on this nice tune titled Raise The roof. It was indeed a national anthem. 2. Konga – Baby Konga Lawal Olalekan Olumo popularly known as Konga released Baby Konga years ago. The song was hit, even the unborn baby sing d song to the extent that the Nigerian Authority even have to ban the song from airwaves which even makes the baby kong crooner more popular. 3. Weird MC – Ijo Ya Don Jazzy and JJC-produced single “Ijoya” was a massive success, earning her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song, and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect. 4. Marvelous Benji – New Dance Marvelous Benj – Give it to dem. Prologue Its five hours to my wedding and I am still two hours away from the occasion. Yes, you heard me right! two hours away and I am not even sure I want to go to the venue at all. You might be wondering why a girl won’t want to be at her wedding, it’s not as if I was forced into the marriage, Nahh, I said yes on my own, no pressure from any one at all. But today, I doubt I want to say those vows with my fiancée. How did I get to this decision? What made me change my mind? Well, its kind of a long story but we still have 4 hours, 50minutes before the wedding. July 20th 2013 I glare with frustration at my dress, it won’t just iron. I don’t get the problem with this dress. This is like the fourth time I am ironing it and I am already late. With anger I dropped the iron mistakenly on my dress. Before I realized my mistake it was too late- the cloth was burnt. That’s it! I give up. I am not going for this wedding again- Like I could miss it even if I wanted to. One of my closest friends in school is getting married today and I must be there. She had already forgiven me for not being in her bridal train, she won’t forgive me for missing the wedding. So I started looking for another cloth. I decided on a short red dress I bought a month ago with strappy sandals. Thank God it doesn’t need ironing. I began the ritual of makeup before I wore my clothes and left the house. Luckily, the bus stop was very close to my place. The setting of the reception was a table of four with grey and pink decorations. So I found a convenient seat in the middle and sat down. Few minutes later two guys and a girl came and joined me. After few seconds I concluded that one of the guys was dating the other girl on the table, their PDA was a little too much. “so Hi, I am Daniel” the other guy said to me “Oh, ok I am Jenny” I replied “So which of the couple do you know?” “I am friends with the bride, actually we are classmates” “Ok, the groom is my co worker.” “So why are you sitting alone? No friends to hook up with?” “Most of my friends are bridesmaids” “Ok, I guess there is a good reason why you not a bridesmaid then.” “Yeah there is an embarrassing reason why.” “One day you will tell me the story.” I just smiled, what made the guy think I will tell him the story another day, I mean how come he was so sure we will meet again? We continued to discuss about random things, school stuffs, his works, my likes and dislikes, movies I love and so on. Before we knew it, it was time to present gifts to the couple. We went together. When my friend saw us, she just smiled, drew me closer and said “don’t let him go without him asking for your number”. Back to our seats we continued our discussions. When the reception came to an end, I picked up my purse ready to go, he also stood and escorted me out. “So, will you be going to the cub tonight with others?” He asked The couple had earlier invited all their close friends for an after party at the club, honestly I didn’t want to go but I had no excuse to give my friend. “Not if I can help it, I am not so interested in the all night loud music.” “Same here, I was planning to go see a movie at the cinema later tonight, why don’t you join me?” “Emm, ok maybe, let me get home first.” “Alright then, I really enjoyed your company today, I really hope you will join me; just give me your contact, the movie starts by 9:30pm. I will call you before then.” So I gave him my contact and left. I already knew I was going to go see the movie with him. So I took my phone and texted Cindy Sorry love, I will be missing the after party, going to see a movie with Daniel Few seconds later she replied Omg! going to the movies already? Hmm I am already looking at the styles I would sew for the wedding *winks* enjoy yourself and I want to hear all about it later Typical Cindy, she had different styles of asoebi she had picked for almost every guy she had seen me with. By 8:30pm, Daniel called and we decided he would come pick me, as it was going to be a little difficult for me to get a taxi by that time since it was weekend; So I texted him my address. By 9pm he was there. After the movie we went to a sit out near the cinema and ordered for soft drinks, it was still too early to go back- no, we were reluctant to go. Honestly we were enjoying each other’s company a lot. As we waited for the waiter to bring our drink, I took time to study him, I realized he was a devastatingly handsome man. He was close to 6ft 3inches tall, fair, a little bit macho and had an incredible brown eyes. OMG! Daniel was hot. I was shocked I was just realizing this now. I had spent the whole day with him and never really saw how cute he was. I noticed he was good looking when he sat next to me at the reception, but I didn’t know he was smoking hot!. He cleared his throat as the waiter arrived with the drinks. “So what’s the verdict?” He said I looked at him quizzically “what verdict?” “You have been studying me for the past 5 minutes, so I want to know the verdict” “Sorry” I stuttered “No need, I just want to know the verdict.” “Emm, you have the most incredible eyes I have ever seen, anyways I don’t think I am the first person to tell you that.” “No, you are not, but I loved hearing you say it. Well is that the only thing?” “You already know you are handsome, what again do you want to hear?” He smiled “I wanted to hear you say it, I love how you talk, you have the softest voice ever” I flushed “thank you” “You’re welcome and you are also very beautiful.” “Thank you again” After talking for 30 minutes he took me back to my place. “ I would love to see you again jenny” “Ok, Call me then” “Alright I will, goodnight” “Goodnight” On Monday morning I rushed off for my lecture; I don’t know how I overslept and I don’t even live inside the campus so getting to my department took longer. I barely made to my lecture hall before the lecturer came. “Good morning all, I will be lecturing you for the next one month, Energy Economics, I am a specialist in the area and your department has hired me on contract to handle the course.” “I know that voice, I have heard that voice before! noo it can’t be him.” I looked up and saw Daniel looking directly at me. Oh! He knew he was going to be my lecturer… Damn!!! ……to be continued Don’t forget to drop your comments below because i need to know if you guys are following me. There was this particular lecturer in my department when I was still in school. We all knew him to be a womanizer. He liked all kinds of women, young, old, fat, thin, tall, and short. Every girl in the department tried as much as possible not to get noticed by him. That means doing your assignment with others and coming to his classes on time so you don’t have to beg him to enter his class. One day, (I am sure it was because I didn’t pray that morning, it gave devil the opportunity to deal with me.) It started with waking up late for classes that day. When I realized that it was this lecturer’s class we had, I just decided that I would miss the class. Only for my friend to ping me that they were registering the man’s course. I quickly dressed up wore my deeper life gown, even white powder I didn’t rub that day and ran to class. By the time I got to the department, the man had already locked the door and took attendance. That was when I knew my village people swore for me that day. I waited till he finished teaching and joined the other late comers to go to his office to beg him. Did I tell you that our lecturers each had their own office? Well furnished o! This particular lecturer even had extra seats and curtains. May be he normally held prayer sections in his office, who knows? I had already finished planning the lie I will tell the man, how I was very sick and just came from the school medical center. Am sure God was just watching me and my plans. (I already started with not praying now am about lie). We reached the man’s office and started begging him to please just let us register the course even if we will miss the attendance. The man acted like we were asking Buhari to legalize gay marriage. I made sure I was very invincible in the back of the crowd. The next thing I heard was “hey you at the back on glasses, come here” Shoo! I joined others to turn to see who he was talking to even though I knew that it was the wall I was turning to look at. One over-sabi girl just shouted my name “Chidinma, he is talking to you o” I just used my eyes to dissect the girl. I came closer and he gave me money and some paper to photocopy for him. In my mind I was hoping that he will allow me to register after going for the errands. I ran better than Usain Bolt that day, did the photocopy and came back. As I was getting closer to his office I noticed that my classmates were no longer there. I became sacred. I quietly knocked on his door and he asked me to come in. as I stepped in he asked me to close the door. Ah! Close door ke? I just murmured the devil is a liar. I banged the door but made sure it wasn’t locked. I moved closer to him and gave him the documents. He now asked me my name I quickly shouted the name my grandma gave me (I normally get angry when my siblings called me the name) “sir, my name is Erinma” The next thing he asked me was “so who is eating this bush meat you carrying around?” I quickly checked if I had mistakenly carried someone’s bush meat when I went to do photocopy only to see I was carrying only my bag. “Sir, it’s just my hand bag am carrying o; there is no bush meat here” “So you don’t know what I mean? You are trying to form for me abi? “No o sir I honestly don’t know.” Ok, then, who is enjoying this bush meat you are carrying in front of you. Which of the guys? Oh! He was talking about breasties. I suddenly became dumb. And started calling on my ancestors and God at the same time to give me the wisdom he gave Solomon in the bible so I can I get out of this situation. “Sir nobody o” “Hmm, so when will you give me to enjoy?” In my mind I was calculating my fainting skills incase anything happened. “Sir…. Sir” I suddenly became a stamarer. I was seriously praying and promising God to even become a reverend sister if I can get out from here. It was like God or my ancestors’ sef saw that I had suffered enough and decided to intervene. He then asked me “where are you from” “Enugu” I replied “Where in Enugu?” Sir, Ezeagu” Ah! Ezeagu, I heard they do juju very well I shouted “Yes sir o!, they are very good at it. In fact, both my paternal and maternal grandparents are well known native doctors in the village. Even my dad was also one but recently converted. See the lies jumping from my mouth like I was reciting National Anthem. “Hmmm, serious?” he asked looking almost sacred “Yes sir, you can ask around” I replied He immediately brought out the registration booklet and told me to find my name and sign across it and leave his office I quickly took the book, signed my name and ran away. Since then the man doesn’t even answer my greeting and I made sure I escaped his wahala till I graduated. Good morning my people |
Tiwa Savage Looking for a Nigerian female artist with “star” written all over them? Look no further than Mrs Tiwa Savage Balogun. I mean really it was hard not to sneak her into the #1 spot, but I’m sure she wont complain too much about being #2. At least on our humble list. Her singing ability is never in question, lyrically she’s solid, performance wise she’s outstanding, and the star quality/commercial acceptability surrounding her is beaming to the skies. Her album, Once Upon A Time, released last year is packed with major mainstream singles Eminado (arguably one of the hottest songs last year), Olorun Mi, Folarin to add to the mega hits Kele Kele Love, Love Me (x3) she burst onto the scene with. Quite frankly her list of songs are getting endless not to talk of outstanding features she’s done. And Awards? They’re way too many to name, but when you’re nominated for the BET international act award, you know you’ve made it. Omawumi The Mommy of Divas in the new generation of Nigerian music! Omawonder as she is often called has been a consistent force in Nigerian music since she burst onto the scene in 2007 after finishing 1st runner up in West African Idol. What makes Omawumi so special is her unique ability to appeal to every class of people in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole. Her choice of language to sing in (pre-dominantly pidgin) means that the woman that’s a company CEO and the man selling bushmeat on the road can relate to her music very well. Add her vocal range, great lyrics (both playful and serious) and enticing stage performances, it’s easy to see why she’s so loved in Nigeria. With albums, Wonder Woman (with singles Today na Today, Chocolata, and Love Nwantinti), and The Lasso Of Truth (singles Bottom Belle, If You Ask Me, I Go Go) plus other post album singles, under her belt, and countless awards and nominations, it’s easy to see how Omawumi is the number 1 highest paid female performer in Nigeria

Waje You can bring up the discussion about who the best female singer in Nigeria is right now, and I’m 100% sure Waje’s name will always come up. She’s an amazing singer by any standards. Like the acronym to her name, Word Just Aren’t Enough to describe what she brings to the table. Her vocals are outstanding, lyrics are catchy , live performances are ridic and likability is… well.. ask anyone who’s met her. Those who are her core fans, have known about her abilities for a while, since the days of Do Me with P-Square, Kolo and For A Minute, but the rest of Nigeria took serious notice after her duet with MI, One Naira in 2011. Her album, Word Aren’t Just Enough with singles, Onye, I Wish, and Na The Way, and post album single, Omini Knowest, has helped cement her as one of the major players in the music industry, and a force to be reckoned with for years to come. She’s paid her dues and her shinning period is well deserved. Asa When it comes to Asa, there’re different schools of thought as to where to place in terms of female singers in Nigeria. For us, she’s up there. While she might not sound like your stereotypical RnB singer, she’s unrivaled in pure musical ingenuity. She’s something like a complete musician. Writing, composing, and orchestrating her sounds to fit the kind of music she wants to put out. Her debut album, Asa, is considered a classic, and one of the best albums put in Nigeria in the past decade. But more important that any of these is her consistency. With the release of her album, Bed Of Stone, Asa has put out 3 solid albums that have not only appealed to the local audience but internationally as well. She might be our best musical export right now.

Seyi Shay Seyi Shay is a solid entertainment brand. Her vocals are solid, and so is her work lyrically but it’s her versatility, and mass appeal that put her in a unique box. She can switch from traditional RnB to Reggae to Pop and not drop in quality. Over the past couple of years she’s won me over, and I’m now a big fan. This singer/songwriter’s journey started in the UK where she was part of the musical group, Boadicea, and later From Above. She hit the scene in Nigeria with singles, Loving Your Way, No Lele, and Irawo, but it wasn’t until her single, Murda that she really struck serious gold. The platform is set for her to potentially dominate, and so far she’s making all the right moves to do so. Yemi Alade Yemi Alade might not yet be the King of Queens, as her album title states, but she’s well on the road to being that. Yemi Alade’s ability to cut deep into Nigerian pop music is one of her most unique qualities with widely accepted singles, Johnny, Ghen Ghen Love, and Tangerine. But let’s not get it twisted, the girl can blow when it comes to vocals. One listen to Farabale on DJ Klem’s AfroFunkyDiscoSoul will convince you that she’s got serious gold in her wind pipes. Probably the most impressive thing about Yemi Alade is her evolution since she broke into the scene back in 2010. She’s constantly grown, and improved on every aspect of her music, which leads me to believe as highly rated as she is now, the best is yet to come Chidinma This Project Fame winner from 2010 hit the ground running right after she was crowned with the hit single, Jankolikoko featuring Sound Sultan. Though she’s not your stereotypical vocalist, she knows how to deliver songs in a way that every class of people in Nigeria can rock with. Her single, Kedike has become her trademark tune winning her awards after awards including Best Female West African Act at the KORA awards in 2012, and giving her the tag name Ms Kedike. Following that up shortly after with another mega hit Emi Ni Baller. Her more recent singles, Oh Baby, Jolie, and Kite have done well to keep her status at a consistent level. Giving her all the makings of someone that’ll be around for the long haul.

Nigeria is filled with super talented female singers. From the mainstream pop singers to the traditional RnB soul singing divas, to the pidgin english singing ladies that reach the core of the Nigerian audience. You want it, you got it with the talent base we have here. In an industry dominated by male artists, these female stars have done well to stand out and be some of the biggest names in Nigerian entertainment through the talent, and most especially their hard-work and consistency. So we, in our humble opinion and with input from some industry experts, have compiled a list of the Top 10 Female singers in Nigeria based on Vocal Ability, Lyrics and Delivery, Mainstream Acceptability, Consistency, and Commercial style. So here goes…. Cynthia Morgan Cynthia Ikponmwenosa Morgan (born 23 September 1991), popularly known by her stage name Cynthia Morgan, is a Nigerian born songwriter and singer whose style of music is a fusion of pop, hip hop, dancehall and rap. She came into limelight following the release of her singles “Don’t Break My Heart” and “Lead Me On”, both of which received significant airplay. Ruby Gyang Ruby Gyang has been known as great singer since her days in secondary school, and her mini feature appearances in MI, and Jesse Jagz songs. However it wasn’t until she released her “debut” single, Okay that everyone else in Nigeria got to experience what Ruby carries in her voice box. She’s also gathering up a big fan base, and the award nominations for her follow up singles, Down and Good Man are indications that her career is taking off. For her core fans, it’s something they all knew was going to happen sooner or later. The rest of us are just now catching up. Niyola Niyola is now starting to make her mark on the Nigerian music industry, but if you think she’s a newbie, you’re very mistaken. Niyola has been doing music since she was 8, and in 2000 emerged at the first runner up in the AMEN starlet competition. She later linked up with Trybe records, and then Westside music where she released her debut album with singles Me n U, No More and Dem Say. Her profile took a serious upturn when she signed with EME and everyone really started taking notice. Her single Toh Bad became her IT song, and show cased not only her singing ability, but her ability to convey emotions through her song so effortlessly. Song writing wise she’s also quite stellar, and her subsequent singles, No Comment, Love To Love You, and Last Bus Stop have done well to cement her name as one of the top divas in Nigerian music. http://www.onlineleaks247.com/index.php/2015/11/04/top-10-female-vocalists-in-nigeria/ CC: laalsticlala, ishilove
