Parents of school-age pupils in Osun State were today gripped by panic as the government told students that they would be reassigned to different schools upon resumption of classes. Earlier, the state government had postponed the resumption of schools by two weeks, stating that it was reforming education. The postponement expired today. Students showed up at their old schools today and were greeted with new lists of their assignment to different schools. The government ordered the students to begin moving their personal effects to their new schools. Numerous parents said they were distraught that their children poured into the streets, trying to locate their new schools. Some of them carried their chairs and desks. “This is a crazy policy,” one parent said. He added that the so-called education reform was part of the state education board’s efforts to cover up Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s disastrous decision to convert Fakunle High School into a site for a Shop Rite mall. Several critics of the government’s policy accused the governor of acting in the interest of his political benefactor, former Governor Bola Tinubu, who is reported to be the owner of the proposed mall. One source stated that the “reform” idea came up after alumni of the Fakunle High School as well as other stakeholders criticized the decision to demolish the school for either a Shop Rite mall or a parking space. “The reform is an after-thought. Alhaji Aregbesola called it reform, and began reshuffling students after his plan met wide condemnation,” said the source. Students of the school had protested in February against the state government’s plan to demolish their school and convert it to a mall. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that alumni and other donors had begun removing various items they had donated to the school after it became clear that the government would go ahead with its plan to transform the school into a business site. Earlier, the government had taken to television and radio stations in the state to deny that it had any plans to convert the school to a mall. SaharaReporters learned that some missionary schools in the state had threatened to shut their gates against new students displaced by the government’s redistribution plan. Our correspondent said some schools actually shut their gates today, even though the government had postponed resumption by two weeks to address the school heads and other stakeholders. “If [Governor Aregbesola] meant to do education reform, why is Fakunle not mentioned at all in the entire list of schools so reformed in the state?” asked one of the critics of the government’s controversial moves. He added: “The state government has completely removed the school from existence at all,” alleged an alumnus of Fakunle High School. Some parents alleged that the government’s unannounced redistribution of students caused them great anxiety. They said they panicked when their children were late to return home at their usual time. One of the parents, who is a retired soldier, said he was infuriated and could have acted dangerously when he did not see his children at their usual school premises. He said the principal had intervened and explained that his children had been redistributed to other schools. “They now need additional thirty to forty-five minutes to reach their school and the same amount of time to return home,” said the parent. Several sources told SaharaReporters that no students were assigned to Fakunle High School. The school’s former students were told that they no longer belonged there. “That confirms Aregbesola’s plan to use Fakunle High School for servicing the interest of his political godfather,” said an alumnus of the school.

"Anambra state has the highest cut-off mark of 139 for both males and girls. Candidates who scored above that are entitled to automatic admission on the basis of merit. In the north it ranges from two to 111. In Yobe, a score above two is enough to guarantee a candidate outright admission. There is another dimension to the admission structure. In some states, there is a higher cut-off mark for girls than boys.” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2013/08/unity-schools-admission-policy-discriminatory-don/ |
re@lchange:Unity School Cut Off Mark..Zamfara 2..Anambra 139 (See Full List) The recent cut off marks released for entrance into Nigeria Unity Schools is raising dust across the country. Northern states are allotted very low cut-off marks for entrance into Federal Unity Colleges, while those in the South are allotted higher cut-off marks by the Federal Ministry of Education’s documents In the recently published cut off marks, a State like Zamfara State has as little as two (ohh yes 2 points) as cut off points while Anambra has 139 as cut off points. Students who score above the cut-off are automatically eligible for admission on merit. The Education ministry advised parents to check the results of their wards which have been posted on notice board of all Unity Colleges throughout the Federation. These are the full cut off points into Nigeria Unity Schools as published by the Federal Ministry of Education. When we say that Obi's programs is geared towards embracing all sectors some people does not understand it. Obi is not focusing on just one sector, he attending to all the sectors at the same time. Be is health, education, security, employment generation through attraction of FDIs and local investors. He has created the enabling environment for investments to thrive. |
re@lchange: We are already producing them as you can see, Anambra has been attracting the highest cut of point for the federal government Unity Schools. In Jamb Anambra has been ranking 2nd for past 5 years now. In WAEC and NECO Anambra has come tops going by the stats. so far. |
Investment in education in Anambra state is paying off..we are producing more and more Azikiwes, Achebes, Ojukwus, Chike Obis, Cardinal Arinze, Soludos, Emegwalis, Akunyilis, etc |

Governor Obi Doles out N1b for Strengthening of labs and libraries in Anambra Schools Few days after Governor Obi of Anambra State presented cheques of N1.5b for the rehabilitation of primary schools returned to the Churches; N2b for rehabilitation of primary schools owned by government; N3b to selected missionary hospitals for various upgrade of facilities to enable them secure accreditation, he again presented another cheque of N1b today to strengthen libraries and laboratories facilities in 420 secondary schools in the State and those returned to the Churches. Speaking during the presentation yesterday at Women Development Centre Awka, Governor Obi said that it was part of the N40b his government was committing in the next 6 months into various sectors as final push towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. He said that the money was not borrowed from any financial institution but as a result of savings, prudent management of resources and unprecedented support the State enjoys from development partners. Giving an insight on the last push in the area of education, the Governor said that in few days time the State would employ teachers in core subjects such as English, Maths, Physics, and Chemistry among others to be trained locally and overseas. This is in addition, according to him, to the on-going recruitment of 5000 teachers in the State whose salaries for One year after his exit from Government have been saved in the Bank. He also said that the State had already procured 500 buses from local manufacturers, Coscharis and Innoson to be shared to both public and private schools. Other things he said would be provided to Secondary Schools before the end of the year include, 25,000 laptop installed with full school syllables and books, generators, sick bays and internet connectivity. On why the support is for both public and private schools, Governor Obi who said that some people raised that issue at planning level insisted that he was not concerned about ownership of those schools but the fact that those schools trained the children of the State. He said that he was encouraged because the massive support he gave to schools in the past had manifested in the improved performance of the schools in the State. He appealed to the people of the State that the only way to sustain all these revolution going on is for them to vote in a credible and clear-headed candidate. Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Mrs Uju Okeke said “that the event of today was one of 13 series of events to fully implemented Anambra State package on accelerative progress in the attainment of education for all in the State tagged final push.” Speaking further, She said : “There is no doubt that our investment and effort are yielding maximum results. Just recently the Basic Education Certificate Exam results released by our Exam Development Centre indicated that out of 46,741 candidates who sat for the exam, 45,196 (96.69%) passed at Credit Levels and only 1,545 (3.3%) failed. In the last NECO examination for entry into junior secondary schools, nationwide, Anambra State pupil took the overall 1st position. The Senior School Certificate Exam result analysis of WAEC recently released clearly shows that our schools are making significant improvement. In line with strengthening our institutional management of education for quality services delivery, our teachers and principals have been given orientation on Quality assurance and best practices in education, which we hope, will continue to manifest in our students’ performances. In the areas of morals, our decision on handover of schools to the Missions is being vindicated with the re-invigoration and re-positioning of the moral education operators in our schools.” In their own remarks, the Commissioners for Local Government, Mrs Azuka Enemuo and her Planning Counterpart, Prof. Chinyere Okunna said that the good things coming to the State was because the Governor had remained committed and focused in serving the people.

cecegorz: That Dude seriously pulled thick wool over the eyes of Anambrarians.Anambra has the best road network that traversed the cities, towns and communities of the state. We are spreading development to all parts of the state. |
Cuche: Right now, you can not progress without folks like Uncle Ben because you just don't have the means to do so, uncle is generating and managing the largest in Nigeria IGR for Lagos while a whole Anambra is messing with chump change like N450 millionAnything that has the stain of Islamic party APC we dash una..so make una take Ngige and Akabueze for free! Only small Ekwuluobia can remit 500 million a month talk more of major cities of Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi. Anambra has to classify the true IGR for a reason. So take a chill pill cos we are the wise men from the east, we know exactly what we are doing! |

ketoprofen: no be small serious case o.The implementation of the UN Habitat masterplan has since begone. It started with the demolisions at HeadBridge, Upper Iweka, Nkpor etc. Even here in Awka, Amawbia bye-pass has been demolished and the road is being widened now, so is also Court road. Then some roads are being done within GRA to further expand the city. |
ACM10: Na wa o. APGA is still milking Ojukwu's patronage. Thought that Ojukwu appealed to us to vote for Peter Obi as his last wish. Now that he is dead, Obi is still clinging to him. Methinks Obi is stretching Ojukwu's benevolence. Obi should find a better way to appeal to the masses. I frown at using Ojukwu to achieve selfish aim in local Igbo politics. Nwanne Ojukwu remains the 'leader' of Ndigbo and APGA though he is dead but his image loom larger than even the present living leaders. As for the the next election..APGA has won it.. |
