About yesterday, something happened to me - and it started with a Twitter hash tag

You may be wondering what happened but I will get to that soon. The Twitter hash tag I am talking about is #GetAramideToHarvard

That hash tag was created to help a lady, Aramide fund her forthcoming masters programme in Harvard. She was to raise a huge sum of 68,000 dollars and ended up exceeding the target

Now, you want to know what happened to me when I stumbled on the hash tag and saw that she successfully raised the amount ?

Well, I became filled with envy and so much negativity that I began to question what I was doing with my life

I mean, this lady was able to pull so many people to fund her education and here I was struggling to even define my personal goals

...She's going to Harvard, where are you ?

...What will she contribute to others after finishing from Harvard ?

...Do these people know what 68,000 dollars can do to help the poor ?

Those were the questions I asked myself, when I could have just admired what the young lady had done for herself - and move on

This was not the first time I would see a social media post and start reflecting on my life - some other days, all it took was a picture or a video

Today, I decided to think and get some things straight. I was falling into a social media trap and just had to come out of it

The truth about social media is that :

1. It is a dumping ground for success stories

There are several millions of people that only remember social media when they have an achievement or beautiful picture to share.

This is not bad in any way - the problem is that it confuses people (like me) to believe they are the only human beings who do not have things working out for them.

So, you need to understand that what you see online is just a part of someone's life - not everything !

A very small number of people are real enough to talk about their failures online - so save yourself the mental stress, and do not be carried away.

2. About anything can be faked

I have spent a good amount of time on Instagram, enough to know that many people lie with their accounts

On Twitter, it could be a false story or fake picture - like you may have seen some ladies get busted for using photo-editing apps to enlarge their hips or behinds

If you happen to use social media at any time, do yourself a favor and stop thinking everything is true - also don't waste time trying to be an online detective

3. It isn't that serious

It took me some time to get used to the fact that the best jokers on earth are on social media.

Back then, I used to try to rationalise a lot of things

...how come this lady gets praised for tweeting nudes ?

...how can this guy call me names when he doesn't know me ?

That was me years ago !

To stay sane on social media, i had to stop over thinking things and accept that not everyone is always bent on whatever they do online - regardless of my moral or religious standings


I hope these three points guide your use of social media, guilt-free

Apologies if I appeared pessimistic in any sentence, you should definitely admire success stories and if possible celebrate them - if they pop up on your feeds

Feel free to like whatever beautiful picture or video you may stumble on

But best of all, never feel guilty

Never get jealous or green with envy - whenever you do, remember those three things I mentioned above

Appreciate what you have and permit yourself to be challenged - not intimidated
