The Federal Government on Tuesday, imposed stamp duty of N50 on bank customers for money received into their accounts.
The development means that bank customers will henceforth pay N50 stamp duty for money received into their accounts via electronic transfer, cash and cheques.
The order was contained in a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) circular to all Deposit Money Banks and Other Financial institutions titled, Collection and Remittance of statutory charges on receipts of Nigeria Postal Service under the Stamp Duties Act”.
It reads: “As part of efforts to boost its revenue base, the federal government of Nigeria is exploring revenue opportunities in the non-oil sectors especially taxes and rates. It is in recognition of this fact that banks and other financial institutions are enjoined to support government’s revenue drive through compliance with the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act, LFN 2004 as reinforced by the court judgement in Suit No FHC/L/CS/1710/2013. In this regard, the CBN pursuant to the provisions of its enabling laws, hereby issues this circular to all DMBs other financial institutions:
“With immediate effect, all DMBs and other financial institutions shall commence the charging of N50 per eligible transaction in accordance with the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act and Federal Government Financial Regulations 2009, that is, all receipts given by any bank or other financial institution in acknowledgment of services rendered in respect of electronic transfer and teller deposits from N1, 000 and above.
“For all avoidance of doubt, the following receipts are however exempted from imposition of stamp duties: payments of deposits or transfer by self to self whether inter or intra bank; and any form of withdrawals/transfers from saving accounts;
It should be noted that these charges are only payable by receiving accounts;
“Each DMB shall open an account designated as NIPOST Stamp Duties Account into which all charges collected shall be paid. The balances in such accounts shall be transferred monthly by the DMBs to CBN NIPOST Stamp Duty Collection Account No. 3000047517.
“Other financial institutions shall remit their Stamp Duty collections to any DMB of their choice.”

Former Barcelona sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, has revealed that the club signed Luis Suarez, because they failed in their attempt to land Sergio Aguero from Manchester City.
Suarez was signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2014, in a deal worth £75million, but the Spanish giants would have preferred another South American striker.
“We had a few options. Our first choice was not Suarez — he knows this,” Zubizarreta said.
“In the winter, we tried to sign Aguero. But it didn’t come off.

The Federal Government is to inaugurate a National Lassa Fever Action Committee in view of the outbreak of Lassa fever recorded in the country.
This hint is contained in a press release, signed by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relation in the Federal Ministry of Health, and made available to newsmen on Sunday.
The statement, quoting the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewale, indicated that the ministry would convene an Emergency National Council on Health meeting to discuss the on-going Lassa fever outbreak in the country.
According to the statement, the committee will be inaugurated during the emergency meeting, scheduled to hold on Jan. 19.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Minister put the number of reported cases to 129.
He made this known on Jan.14 while addressing the Senate Committee on Health, headed by Sen. Lanre Tejuoso, on the outbreak of the disease in Nigeria.(NAN)

A three man panel of the Kogi State Election Tribunal has dismissed an application seeking to stop the January 27 swearing-in of the State Governor Elect, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, saying the motion was incompetent.
The panel led by Justice Halima Mohammed on Thursday dismissed the motion exparte filed by the Labour Party, LP, against the state governor elect in Lokoja, the state capital.
Mohammed had held that the application to hear the matter outside the pre-hearing session ought to have been filed by way of motion on notice since an earlier motion exparte for substituted service of the petition on Alhaji Bello as first respondent in the petition was granted.
Counsel to the petitioner, Reuben Egwuaba, had earlier sought the leave of the tribunal, through the exparte motion, to hear the motion on notice restraining the 1st respondent (Bello) from presenting himself before the Chief Judge of the state for the purpose of swearing-in.
Egwuaba said Bello had no valid elected running mate as at the time the supplementary election was conducted, following his nomination as replacement for the deceased All Progressive Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu.
“Consequent upon nomination of Alhaji Bello as replacement for Audu, Hon. James Faleke, who was Audu’s running mate withdrew and dissociated himself from participating in supplementary election as Bello’s running mate.
“Bello was declared governor-elect after the supplementary election. Now, the Labour Party that participated in all the stages of the elections on November 21 and December 5, submit that Bello was not qualified to participate in that election.
“Time is of the essence, more so that the swearing-in has been scheduled for January 27, the motion exparte is for leave of the tribunal to hear the Motion on Notice outside pre-hearing session and stop the inauguration as we proceed to hear the substantive case,” he said.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Friday swore in Justice Adama Iye Iyayi -Lamikanra as the Acting Chief Judge of Rivers State.
Justice Adama Iye Iyayi-Lamikanra, is primarily an indigene of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continue to accord women their rightful positions in government, no matter the circumstances.
The governor said that women will continue to enjoy more than 35 percent of appointments in his administration; noting that they occupy about 70 percent in different positions.
He said : “Nobody should talk about twenty five percent or thirty percent, the women appointed since my administration came into power, has covered up to 70 percent.”
Governor Wike while congratulating the newly sworn in acting Chief Judge on her new office, charged her to consolidate on the legacies bequeathed by her predecessor.
”We thank God that the Judiciary is back. Let the Acting Chief Judge continue from where her predecessor stopped. Your predecessor has done very well. I am very proud to say this. Do your best and at the end of the day, people will commend you,” the governor said.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media And Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi has said that no statement made by any Senator during the plenary could be interpreted to mean an admission that the 2016 budget is missing.
He said there was no budget missing and that the Senate will today (Thursday) distribute copies of the budget to all the Senators so as to arm them to properly contribute to the debate, which will take place between Tuesday, January 19 to Thursday, January 21, 2015.
Already, all senators have indicated the date they will make their own contribution on the budget.
Abdullahi stated that during plenary when Senator Eyinaya Abaribe sought for clarification on the story in the media surrounding the information that the copy of the 2016 budget submitted to the Senate was missing, the Senate President replied that the issue he (Abaribe) mentioned and all issues emanating from the executive sessions were being looked into by an adhoc committee and that all Senators should wait for the committee to submit its report.
“We have reeled out our time table for working on the budget. So, how can the same budget be missing? The Senate President never said or admitted that the budget is missing and there was nothing that he said while presiding over the plenary that could be logically interpreted to mean am admission that the budget is missing.
“The media should please avoid unnecessary sensationalism. We assure Nigerians that our time table of completing work on the budget by February ending remains sacrosanct and we will work assiduously to achieve it”, he said.

Commercial buses in Lagos State, otherwise known as Danfo, will soon be barred from operating on Broad Street and Apongon.
Special Adviser to Governor Akinwumi Ambode on Central Business District (CBD), Agboola Dabiri made the disclosure on Wednesday.
“You must have observed that the traffic within Apongbon from Broad Street has been terrible and if you are not careful, from beginning of Apongbon to Surulere can take like five hours,” he said.
He said Apongbon towards Broad Street (formerly Western Avenue) would be cordoned off such that commercial buses would find it difficult to pick and drop passengers.
“Our ultimate target is to make Broad Street and Apongbon zero tolerant to yellow buses,” he said.
On street trading, he said: “As of today, we have sealed under the bridge with barb wires; we have enclosed the traders under the bridge within the barb wires so as to prevent them from moving.
“Each day, millions of people visit Lagos Island for trading, we will do our best to maintain best standard in the CBD.”

The closing date for the registration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as earlier announced by JAMB remains January 16th, 2016.

Though there are rumours that there’s likely going to be an extension, our JAMB source has notified us that there is no official statement to that effect yet.
We therefore wish to advise all Myschoolers who are yet to purchase their 2016 UTME forms to do so on or before January 15th, 2016.
This also extends to candidates who are still waiting for supplementary or additional list of their choice schools for the 2015/2016 admission year to be released.
It is always a bad idea to have all your eggs in one basket. There is no 100% guarantee that your name will appear on the list even if the school eventually releases it.
To be on a safe side, get the JAMB form before it expires. That way, even if you miss the 2015/2016 admission, you will still stand a chance in the 2016/2017 session.
However, if JAMB eventually extends the registration, we will be the first to inform you about that.
Also remember the examination is expected to commence February 29th 2016 (all things being equal).

A telecommunication maintenance engineer, David Nwawuisi, has disclosed how he was paid a sum of N150,000 to install a Radio Biafra transmitter on an MTN mast in Ngwo, Enugu State.
Nwawuisi, 29, who was on the payroll of Ericsson, the firm managing mast sites for MTN, revealed this in a statement which he made to the Department of State Services on July 27, 2015.
The suspect said he was managing 45 MTN sites for Ericsson, adding that the Radio Biafra transmitter had operated for three months on MTN mast before it was discovered and his subsequent arrest by the DSS on July 15, 2015.
Nwawuisi, who obtained a B.Sc degree in Biochemistry from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 2010, said he was being paid N73,000 plus per month by Ericsson.
Nwawuisi stated, “I came to know about Chidiebere and Obioma one day the security woman called me to tell me that they will like to install a radio (transmitter) on one of my sites at Ngwo in Enugu State and I told them that I don’t know who they are that if they can make out time so that we can see face to face because I don’t know them and that was in May.
“So the next day, they called me. I was working in one of my sites at St. Michael Catholic Church Asata in Enugu State. I asked them to come down to that site and that was the place I saw them for the first time and they introduced themselves as Chidiebere and Obioma. They also asked for my name and I said David. They also asked for my native name and I said Chukwugozie and from there Chidiebere started saying that the radio (transmitter) they are asking for my permission to install in my site is to help them educate our people (Igbo) and let them know their brothers and where they come from….
“They called me again to remind me of that and that was when I told them ok and we agreed that they are going to be paying N25,000 only per month which they paid six months upfront. N75,000 cash was given to me that day they came for the installation and out of that I gave N5,000 to the security woman. The balance was paid into my account at Ecobank after the First Bank (account) I gave to Obioma failed to accept the payment.
“The payment of the balance was done two weeks after the installation of the radio (transmitter). On three different occasions, Chidiebere and Obioma called me to do some maintenance on the radio (transmitter). I gave them access into the site and left and when they finished, the security woman informed me that they are through and I came and locked the site.
“The items Chidiebere came (with) were an electronic that looks like a decoder and a DSTV dish which was installed on the fence. The other items were installed inside the MTN site shelter. The equipment has been there for three months and on July 15 the MTN staff went to the site and called me from the site and asked me what the equipment is. The name of the MTN staff is Mr. John Ibekwe. When he was calling, I couldn’t get what he was asking due to the environment because I was driving and when I parked, I called the security woman to ask her and she told me that is the equipment that Chidiebere and Obioma installed that he is asking of.
“I called back the MTN man to tell him what the equipment is for, that is a Radio Biafra (transmitter) that was installed by Chidiebere and Obioma. I told him that I will like to see him which he asked me to come to Shoprite and I came and after I was taken to the MTN office by the MTN security patrol team. From the office, after telling them how the equipment came about and how I got to know about Chidiebere, I was taken to Enugu DSS office.” (sic)
He stated that the MTN thereafter uninstalled the Radio Biafra transmitter.

1. Davido was unhappy about Sophia’s pregnancy as he clearly didn’t expect a child with her – According to him, on learning that Sophie was pregnant for him, his mind was bemused and his soul confused. He however said he accepted his responsibility for the sad misadventure that put him on a flight with her, a flight headed nowhere.

2. There is no love lost between Davido Adeleke and Dele Momodu – Dele Momodu has come out to say Sophie was ‘comprehensively scandalized’. In a statement released on January 4, the Ovation publisher said details circulating in the media of his cousin being a cannabis smoker is so bad ‘nothing could have been cruelest’.

3. Baby Imade was allegedly ‘forcefully’ taken away from her mum on July 11, 2015 – Contrary to claims that baby Imade was to be taken abroad for treatment, Mr. Momodu says this has been an unwarranted fabrication of endless lies to justify the act of forcefully taking a baby from her biological mother. Momodu claims the baby had been ‘forcefully separated’ from her mother at only two months old, and there were pleas for months for her to be returned to her biological mother but all Sophia got was the opportunity to visit her daughter once a week, specifically on Sundays.

4. Claims that Imade was unwell might be untrue – This is because when Imade was taken abroad for alleged treatments, she had in fact being with her aunt, Ashley Adeleke (Davido’s sister), in Dubai as they were both swimming in the pool of Atlantis, The Palm Dubai, a luxury resort

5. Sophia Momodu might not be the defenseless, poor mother after all – Contrary to Mr. Momodu’s report that Sophia was a defenseless lady who had been unfairly treated; there are revelations that she is a party lover and a lavish spender who contributes nothing to vast expenses incurred. In addition, no one from her family, including her uncle Dele Momodu, contributed even a coin to the expenses at the time. Davido claims the entire burden of medical bills, feeding, transportation and sundry expenses were handled by him.

6. There might be more to this from the Momodu family than we know – There are possibilities there is more to the relationship within the Momodu family than we currently know or read about. Davido claims while things were rosy between him and Sophia, she revealed some details to him about her uncle Dele Momodu that he doesn’t want to divulge.

7. Sophia Momodu might have employed ‘diabolical’ means along the line – Davido claims he opened his doors to Sophia even when he was uncertain it was his baby she was carrying. It was after May 14, 2015 when the baby had been born that DNA results confirmed his status as father. Also, according to him she was a drifter without a relative to assist her in Lagos which led her to moving in with the Afro pop star. He alleged she took advantage of his poor judgment, using a cunning sense and vicious diabolical support to try and make him a victim.

8. The Momodu family might have been jealous all along – Reports from Davido’s camp allege Mr. and Mrs. Momodu are showing a fake love towards Sophia especially because she had a baby for a fairly prominent family. He also claims they are jealous of the fact that she ever became a mum and do not wish the little baby the best things.

9. Mr and Mrs Momodu are crowding Davido’s space – The singer alleged this because upon first meeting Sophia and all through when they were together, she never formally introduced any of them to him which makes him wonder why an absentee uncle has any traction on the mor*l authority commanding the affairs as it is.

10. Sophia Momodu was never reportedly unprepared for motherhood – The singer claimed to have provided her a monthly allowance of N300, 000 in addition to utility bills. He also fully paid a two-year rent for her apartment but she left the house in no time in search of the glitzy night life in Lagos, leaving her baby behind.

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue on Tuesday donated a Toyota Hilux van, wheelchairs and beds to the Centre for Parental Care of the Old and Vulnerable (CEPACOV) in Makurdi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ortom had visited the home to inspect its facilities for the care of the elderly.
The home was established in 2006 by Lady Theresa Atser as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).
Ortom urged wealthy individuals and organisations in the state to always remember the needy, old, vulnerable and especially the senior citizens in the society in such homes.
Further to the donation of items, the governor ordered the State Ministry of Finance to release a monthly allocation of N500,000 as standing impress to the centre for the up keep of the aged.
He also paid for the treatment of one Iurun Tso one of the inmates whose eyes were removed by ritualists who also suffered from hernia and required urgent surgery.
In a welcome address, Atser, the Executive Director of the centre, said it also catered for children and vulnerable people in the state.
She expressed regret that individualism, selfishness and the prevailing poverty in the country had made the living conditions of the elderly very pitiable and deplorable.
“The extended family system in Tiv land is very useful, the old people are well catered for by the younger ones, but this has however changed drastically due to the demands of the society today.
“Family members have little or no time to look after their old ones.
“Also individualism, selfishness and the prevailing poverty in the country has made the living conditions of the elderly very pitiable and deplorable,’’ she said.
According to her, the centre has no fewer than 50 clients placed on monthly stipends and several others staying at the Old People’s Care Home.
