No fewer than 20 shops, three houses and yet to be identified number of vehicles were burnt on Monday as rival gangs clashed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The rival groups it was learnt engaged in a free for all at three different areas of Isale-Osi, Born Photo and Gidarami.
Many residents were said to be seriously injured as some fled for fear of being attacked.
Our source learnt that the fight began Sunday night and continued on Monday with more deadly weapons freely used by members of the two gangs.
The hoodlums brandished weapons like machetes, cutlasses, knives, broken bottles and charms.
A resident of the Born Photo disclosed that the violence erupted as a result of the death of a notorious gang leader, who was said to have been killed by members of the rival group, during a party in the area last week.
He said “The gangs are from Popoyemoja and Born Photo area in Ibadan. One of the leaders of the gangs was killed last week at a party. The members alleged that their leader was killed by a rival group and they planned to avenge his death. They came in the night on Sunday but it was not a serious fight.
“But today they returned and a fight broke out between the two groups. They started burning shops and destroying vehicles and houses.
“They used guns, knives, machetes, broken bottles and other dangerous objects in the fight.
“Several members of the gangs were injured. We had to flee the area for fear of being caught up in the fight.
“They targeted any house where any of the rival cult group was living.
“My sister’s shop was burnt, with goods worth thousands of naira destroyed. As they unleashed mayhem, they were singing war songs.”
He added that even when the targeted gang members had run away from the areas, the hoodlums refused to leave, targeting relatives of their perceived enemies.
The Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Kehinde Subair was said to have earlier visited the scene to assess damages.
The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude while confirming the incident, however, noted that some arrests have been made and that normalcy had returned to the areas.
Odude said: “Two rival groups engaged in a fight in the areas, but normalcy has returned.
“We made some arrests and investigation is still ongoing. Police will not tolerate activities of hoodlums in the state.
“Our men are still on ground to forestall further clash and disturbance in the areas by the groups”

Politics / How Akpobolokemi, Others Stole N754m – EFCC Investigator by jcodez(m): 8:25am On Jul 11, 2017

An EFCC investigator, Mr Chukwudi Orji, on Monday at an Ikeja High Court revealed in graphic details how a former Director-General of NIMASA and five other staff members stole N754m belonging to the agency.
Orji made the revelations while testifying at the ongoing trial of Patrick Akpobolokemi, the ex-DG of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and six others on a 13-count bordering on stealing and fraud.
Akpobolokemi’s co-defendants are Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Vincent Udoye, Adegboyega Olopoenia and a company — Gama Marine Nigeria Ltd.
Orji told the court, “Vimsat Committee, a committee of NIMASA had opened an account in Zenith Bank. This account only had two inflows.
“On August 29, 2015, N498.4m was paid into that account by NIMASA and on May 20, 2015, N318m was also paid into that account by NIMASA.
“This gave the account a total inflow of N816.2m. On Sep. 29, 2015, there was a transfer of N11m into the account of one Lakewood Garden Ventures Ltd from the Vimsat Committee account.
“The money was never used for research work as it was mandated to be, this money was part of the sharing formula of the defendants.”
Orji, explaining the role of Vincent Udoye, one of the defendants in the alleged scam, said, “On March 6, 2015 N7.8m was transferred from Vimsat account into the Diamond Bank account with number -0020802815 of the fifth defendant (Udoye).

Politics / Attempt To Declare Saraki Acting President Fails At Senate by jcodez(m): 3:15pm On Jul 04, 2017

A mild drama occurred on the floor of the Senate, on Tuesday, when a point of order was raised, that the Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki was the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Senate, upon resumption from its 3 weeks break, received a communication from Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Acting President of Nigeria, seeking the confirmation of Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, as the Director General of National Lottery Regulatory Commission.
The lawmakers, however, subjected the letter to deliberations, owing to the fact that the Acting President, had earlier reportedly said the Senate had no power to confirm nominees.

Senator Eyinanya Abaribe (Abia South), had raised a motion that the country had no President or Acting President at the moment, adding that, President Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo were neither in the country, as at the time.
This was greeted with a counter point, coming through order 53 rule 4 of the Senate standing rules, by Senator Kabiru Marafa (Zamfara Central).
Marafa who cited relevant sections of the Nigerian constitution, said, “if the President is not around, the Vice President should act, and if the Vice President is not around, the Senate President, who is the number 3 citizen should become acting President.”
The Senate President, however, didn’t allow any seconder or more comments, even when Senators were agitating to support the motion. He quickly ruled Senator Marafa “out of order.”

Politics / Why I Became Nigeria’s Military Head Of State At 31 – Yakubu Gowon by jcodez(m): 10:53am On Jul 04, 2017

Former Military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon has given insight into how he became Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces at the age of 31.
Giving a breakdown of events that led to his emergence as the Head of State, Gowon disclosed that coup and counter coup led him to power.

He disclosed that his then superior, Zakariya Maimalari would have been the Head of State in July 1966 “after the convolutions” that followed the Kaduna Nzeogwu-led coup early in the year but could not as he, Maimalari was killed in a counter coup.
Gowon made the revelation in a book titled, “The First Regular Combatant: Brigadier General Zakariya Maimalari,” which will be launched today in Abuja.
He said Maimalri would have been the “natural choice” after the so-called counter coup.
Giving a breakdown of the coup and counter coup, the book recalled that Nzeogwu, a Major at that time, had executed a failed coup on January 15, 1966 which led to the assassination of the prime minister, Abubakar Balewa, the premier of the northern region, Ahmadu Bello, and the premier of the western region, Samuel Akintola.
As a result of the coup, key officers from the Northern part of the country were also killed, including Maimalari, a brigadier General at the time.
Following the execution of the coup, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi,who was the most senior military officer assumed power but his failure to prosecute those behind the coup led to his overthrow and subsequent death in a counter-coup by officers from the North.

Politics / BREAKING: Former Jonathan’s Aide, Doyin Okupe Dumps PDP by jcodez(m): 4:05am On Jul 03, 2017

Former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party.

In a post on his Facebook page titled, “It is time to say GOODBYE TO PDP,” Okupe said he had to make his resignation from the party public because PDP “no longer exists in my ward as a single unified party; it was when I joined it.”

He based his resignation on the following reasons:

“It is no longer news that the PDP has been embroiled in a fratricidal internal crisis brought upon it by itself.

“Its current direction is difficult to discern and I am convinced that even when the much expected judgement from the Supreme Court is given, the future of the party is not likely to be significantly affected whichever way the judgement goes.

“There seems to be too much deception, selfishness and gross nepotism in our polity nationally.

“During the NRC and SDP era, there existed true nationalism and brotherhood.

“Northern NRC politicians will under no circumstance undermine their party for any parochial reason. Also neither will a Southern NRC politician, under any circumstance betray their party.

“Abiola was a Yoruba man, yet those of us who were Yorubas in the NRC never once thought of voting for him.

“The commitment in the North was even more profound. Even the Northern SDP rejected a distinguished successful Kano born “Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, and voted for a Southern Yoruba muslim candidate. Worse than that, both Abiola and his running mate, Amb. Baba Gana Kingibe were muslims. Yet, it did not matter.

“Today, political parties have lost their importance and identities. Once the candidate is Northern, his party is immaterial, all norherners irrespective of their professed party affiliations will vote for him.

“This is the major reason why there has been a total absence of opposition in the country in the last two years, and may probably be responsible for the polarization and sharp ethnic divisions we are currently witnessing in the country.

“In the east, there is intense anger and loud call for secession, in the south-south, there is absolute indignation and very resolute demand for total control of their resources, while the south-west is bellicose and hell bent on true federalism and restructuring which many prominent Northerners openly oppose for good or for bad.

‘Under these circumstances, political parties have lost their flavor and relevance.Certainly, a party like my former party, PDP has no future in the evolving Nigerian Political Circus.

“This political confusion has percolate to the states, Ogun state being one of the worst hit.

The leadership of the party has been irredeemably fictionalized for nearly a decade.

“Presently it is divided broadly into two major factions. One headed by Hon Ladi Adebutu and the other by Senator Buruji Kashamu.

“Unfortunately, I do not fit into either group. Hence it becomes extremely difficult for me to operate as a politician under the PDP umbrella in the state. Yet, all politics is local.

“The situation in the country may in the nearest future require that matured men of goodwill standby to play a unifying role for political stability of the country. My membership of PDP may directly or indirectly preclude me from gratifying such noble and patriotic desire.

“Undeniably, I have been one of the major beneficiaries (not financially) of the PDP. But for a fact, the PDP and the APC are political platforms that have now expired or in the process of being so.

“Therefore, no matter my commitment and passion for this great party, the PDP, it has become menopausal and can no longer bear fruits.

“I have therefore decided to withdraw a bit and study the political situation more critically and thereafter take a decision soonest on my next political move.

“I will miss my friends, associates and co-travelers on this tortuous political journey and adventure. However, it is also still possible that our paths cross in the nearest future, which will be a delight.

“But in spite of my stated pessimism, I sincerely express my best wishes to the more courageous party faithfuls who I am leaving behind, and I also pray for God’s guidance for them.

“For how far I have gone, I remain eternally grateful to Almighty God and Jesus Christ my savior, to whom ALL powers belong. If it is His will that I still play a role in National Politics in future, then most certainly, and by His grace, I WILL BE BACK.”

Politics / NNPC Reduces Price Of Diesel To N175 by jcodez(m): 9:07am On Jun 19, 2017

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has reduced the price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) also known as diesel by 42% nationwide.

This was containted in a statement released on Sunday and signed by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs division of the corporation, Ndu Ughamadu.

NNPC explained that the price reduction, which was the aftermath of key strategic interventions, saw prices fall to N175-N200 from N300.

“It would be recalled that in the first quarter 2017, retail prices of AGO, which is one of the deregulated products, shot to an all-time high of N300/litre in major demand centres across the country.

“Such unpleasant situation placed a huge burden on truck drivers, who need the product for transporting their vehicles; the nation’s manufacturing sector, which requires it to run its operations as well as on the masses, who need it for household power generation.

“However, following strategic intervention efforts by the NNPC towards sustained improvement in the supply of the diesel, the product’s retail prices as at the end of May 2017 ranged from N175 to N200 across the country (a significant price drop of about 42%), while ex-depot prices also dropped to between N135 and N155.

“Since January this year, we have worked very hard with relevant stakeholders to improve distribution from refinery depots, by implementing a robust loading programme,” the statement read.

Politics / Details Of How Abacha Died In 1998 – Al-mustapha by jcodez(m): 8:57am On Jun 19, 2017

Former Chief Security Officer, CSO, to the late Head of State, Gen Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has dismissed claims that Abacha died after eating an apple from his concubines.

Narrating how the former Head of State died, Al-Mustapha said contrary to insinuations, the sudden collapse of the health system of Abacha started on “Sunday, 7th June, 1998 right from the Abuja International Airport, immediately after one of the white security operatives or personnel who accompanied President Yasser Arafat of Palestine shook hands with him, Abacha.”

Al-Mustapha said shortly after the hand shake, he “noticed the change in the countenance of the late Commander-in-Chief and I informed the Aide-de-Camp, Lt. Col. Abdallah, accordingly. He, however, advised that we keep a close watch on the Head of State.”

He said, “Later in the evening of 8th June, 1998, around 6p.m; his doctor came around, administered an injection to stabilize him. He was advised to have a short rest. Happily, enough, by 9p.m; the Head of State was bouncing and receiving visitors until much later when General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, the then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, came calling. He was fond of the Head of State. They were very good friends.

“They stayed and chatted together till about 3.35a.m. A friend of the house was with me in my office and as he was bidding me farewell, he came back to inform me that the FCT Minister, General Useni was out of the Head of State’s Guest House within the Villa. I then decided to inform the ADC and other security boys that I would be on my way home to prepare for the early morning event at the International Conference Centre.

“At about 5a.m; the security guards ran to my quarters to inform me that the Head of State was very unstable. At first, I thought it was a coup attempt. Immediately, I prepared myself fully for any eventuality. As an intelligence officer and the Chief Security Officer to the Head of State for that matter, I devised a means of diverting the attention of the security boys from my escape route by asking my wife to continue chatting with them at the door – she was in the house while the boys were outside. From there, I got to the Guest House of the Head of State before them.

“When I got to the bedside of the Head of State, he was already gasping. Ordinarily, I could not just touch him. It was not allowed in our job. But under the situation on ground, I knelt close to him and shouted, ‘General Sani Abacha, Sir, please grant me permission to touch and carry you.’

“I again knocked at the stool beside the bed and shouted in the same manner, yet he did not respond. I then realized there was a serious danger. I immediately called the Head of State’s personal physician, Dr. Wali, who arrived the place under eight minutes from his house. He immediately gave Oga – General Abacha –two doses of injection, one at the heart and another close to his neck.

“This did not work apparently as the Head of State had turned very cold. He then told me that the Head of State was dead and nothing could be done after all. I there and then asked the personal physician to remain with the dead body while I dashed home to be fully prepared for the problems that might arise from the incident.

“As soon as I informed my wife, she collapsed and burst into tears. I secured my house and then ran back. At that point, the Aide-de-Camp had been contacted by me and we decided that great caution must be taken in handling the grave situation.

“Again, I must reiterate that the issue of my boss dying on top of women was a great lie just as the insinuation that General Sani Abacha ate and died of poisoned apples was equally a wicked lie.”

Politics / Nigeria Not In Democracy Yet – Tinubu by jcodez(m): 8:48am On Jun 19, 2017

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said Nigeria is not yet a “full-blown” democracy.

The former Governor of Lagos stated this over the weekend, when he received the National Icon of Democracy award at the Tell Awards for Excellence.

The event was held at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island.

Tinubu, who was represented by former Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dele Alake, said: “This civilian dispensation that we have – we don’t call it full blown democracy.

“What we have today is a civilian dispensation. So, our democracy is a work in progress, and we believe by the grace of God that we’ll achieve full blown democracy in our time.

“So, every one of us must work towards full blown democracy in Nigeria. We all know the tenets and principles of full blown democracy. And we hope we shall achieve them in our own time in Nigeria.”
