I feel it depends on what ur looking for. if you're looking for a keeper i'll say its okay to be frnds but not like best frnds. i feel u shld become best frnds while ur dating.

but one thing for sure don't get relegated to "being frnds" if you want to be more. Thats really sucks and a very wussy move.

anyway try "sudo rmmod usbserial"
then "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x6000"
then "sudo modprobe option"

then try "dmesg | grep tty"
you should get a message like ttyUSB0 ,
and that means your modem has been detected

if not pls paste the output of "dmesg | tail" again

if it's a composite device then your pc's probably seeing it as a cdrom
try ejecting the cdrom device
that's what i do sometimes with my ovation usb modem

probably /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1
(though i think sr0 will eject your existing cd/dvd drive)
unless you have more than one cd/dvd drive in which it might be /dev/sr2
(the command should be eject /dev/sr1)

just try "dmesg | grep /dev/sr" to find the devices that are listed

(oh and just for the record, i'm more of linux savvy; most of the tricks i know i learnt from
using less user friendly distros)

Thanks for the reply. I did try what u suggested:ejecting the cdrom/dvdrom using the eject /dev/sr0 command, it still didn't work.

I don't think the device is being recognised as a cdrom, if it was it shld come up on the places list with the rest of the devices/drives. the lucky one time it worked it came up there as a cdrom drive.

any more ideas.

U seem to be very Ubuntu savvy, I was wondering if u could help me with a little issue i have that's really cramping my ubuntu style. I posted the issue a few weeks back but couldn't get enough help troubleshooting it.

I can't get my usb modem working, its a Anydata's ADU-510c. The network manager doesn't recognise it. I used to use sierra's aircard 580 (pci) and that worked out of the box. I did a lil' research on my own and found out the Anydata's ADU-510c is a flip flop device, its a composite device having a storage and modem device in one. on windows it's actually recognised as a CD-ROM and a modem. I came across a patch online called usb_modeswitch that's helps such flip flop devices work, I tried it out and still couldn't get the device working, maybe i didn't configure the patch well. funny thing though is that the device did actually work once, I just plugged it in and it worked, and hasn't worked since that lucky once. it works perfectly fine on windows though. i think ubuntu does recognise a device plugged but doesn't know what it is cuz when i run the cmd lsusb it comes its show something attached to the usb with and id and qualcomm written beside it.

Sorry for the long post, I do hope I was able to communicate the issue across and hopefully you could have some idea that could lead to a resolution.

Thanks for ur replies. My internet connection speed is pretty decent so i don't think thats the issue with the flash streaming.Also the visafone modem still didn't work. I tried what u said, still no show!

Anybody with any ideas? not being able to get online with the modem is really cramping my Ubuntu style.

streaming contents all depends on your browser, so wat u do is try to update your flash plugins on your browser or simply, use apt-get upgrade, to upgrade any application dat needs upgrade,

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install

dat should help

As for the visaphone stuff, try deleting d previous profile in the network manager and i bet it would reconfigure it again,

Thanks for the reply, As per the flash thing. I have tried all that, i have even downgraded to an earlier flash version, tried the alternatives an so on. All the browsers on ubuntu use the firefox's flash plugin. it's definitely not an upgrade issue. Does ur youtube stream well on Ubuntu.
this issue is on particular to ubuntu. flash works great on Linux mint though. i heard mint has java and flash built in.

I will try what u said on deleting the profile on the network manager and see if it works.

Please can i get help getting my visafone ADU-510 (usb) Modem to work on ubuntu(9.04). I previously was using starcomm's sierra's aircard 580 (pci) which worked out of the box, all i had to do was to configure my user name and password to get it up and online. On windows its actually recognised as cd-rom drive and it auto installs. it has actually worked once on ubuntu and since then i have never gotten it working again, ubuntu recognised it as a cd-rom just like windows. The network manger also recognised the device. I know Ubuntu 9.04 recognises and supports most modem devices out of the box, even mobile phones being used as modems. I was just wondering is it my modem that has some kinda of hardware defect or is there anyone else in this forum that has the same issues.



N.B: I know if i try the Vdail thingy it should work, i just believe there should be a straight forward GUI way it shld work.

Another little thing, my biggest issue with ubuntu is streaming flash videos online , its always choppy, youtube, porn e.t.c. anybody got a way around this issue?

Vista wasnt well built thats why they are rushing out windows 7 so quickly.

Vista is so memory hungry and runs down batteries quickly, no doubt its prettier and more high tech in many ways but it need lotsa ironing out. vista copied the OS Leopard in many ways and did a poor job at it. well, i guess we live to learn and all those mistakes will be sorted out in the newer repackaged "windows 7"

I personally run a dual boot with Ubuntu and xp at the moment

I'm going mac soon and u know what they say, ."If u go mac u cant go Back!"

but till then, Ubuntu Rocks!

All the technologies have been proven to work i.e wimax, evdo, vsat, e.t.c. but the truth is that, they never really attain their potential. why?

there are mainly two reasons for this.
1. source of network of the ISP: the fastest link to the internet in Nigeria today I think is through the SAT3 backbone. so an ISP that subscribes to this should be relatively fast, also the amount of bandwidth the ISP subscribes to matters, imagine tryin to share an 8mb bandwidth amongst 1000 subscribers, no way!, it would always be slow.

some isp actually lease bandwith from other isp's
some isp's use vsat, (slower than SAT3, more prone to disruptions)


2. BUT THE BIGGEST ISSUE ABOUT SPEED IS DEFINITELY THE GREED WITH THE ISP's :
they never ever think of growth, they just keep signing on subscribers and not expanding their network, its like what happens to our cell phone operators atimes. there should always be a load factor they should consider which they never do and the regulatory bodies neither aren't concerned bout the quality of service being provided!, its our 9ja way i guess.


Personaly i'd advice anyone looking for quality service should target the small upcomming ISPs there networks definately won't be clogged up yet!

Those shoes in the pics are bendy " pumps" its just a different variation of the standard ballet pumps. They are sometimes called banana pumps though. I hear they are real comfy to wear and i also feel they look real nice & trendy on some ladies.

As per the shoes being tight, if the its too tight that it hurts, u should return it and get a better fit!
