Sports20 Year Old Bayelsa United Footballer Dies In Hospital by Jeel(op): 8:35pm On Nov 30, 2011
Nigeria Premier League club Bayelsa United have announced the death of Aruwa Ameh after suffering from paralysis in a Kaduna hospital.
The 20-year-old striker, who was top scorer in the league in the 2007 season with Kaduna United, moved to Bayela United where he won the league title in 2008.

Ameh passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in the north western city of Nigeria.

He was admitted to hospital after complaining of pain in his arm after a training session last week.

"We are shocked," club chairman Victor Baribote told KickOffNigeria.com.

"I have asked the family to keep us informed about the plans they are making, and we will try to be involved as much as possible."

"I spoke to him just last week when I was trying to explain to him how we were working hard to make sure their money is released so we can pay them what they are owed. This is shocking."

PoliticsFactors That Worked Against Waziri(my Analysis) by Jeel(op): 6:59pm On Nov 24, 2011
analysis

THE removal of Mrs. Farida Waziri as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not come to many Nigerians as a surprise because the former police officer has been entangled in war of survival as the agency's boss since her appointment by the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua on May 18, 2008.

As soon as her appointment was announced, some Nigerians started questioning her credibility as the head of the EFCC. Of course, Waziri had inadvertently given her accusers the opportunity to mount their campaign against her as the EFCC chairman.

The first controversy that erupted after the confirmation of her appointment as the EFCC boss by the Senate was her actual title when she left the Police force. She bears the title of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) but investigation revealed that Waziri retired as Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Fraud Unit in 2000 after putting in 35 years in the force.

This discovering made Waziri's opponents to call for her sack, stressing that she was not worthy to be at the helm of the anticorruption agency since her claim had put a question mark on her credibility. Those who hold this view also argue that since it is illegal for any Nigerian irrespective of his position in the society to claim any title not that is not confer on him by institution or organization in which he served, Waziri did not possess the moral right to be the EFCC Chairman.

Apart from the controversy surrounding her actual title on retirement from the Police force, there were also allegations that Waziri was not sincere with some facts assembled against some indicted ex-governors.

Moreover, Waziri is said to be in the camp of those who worked against the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as the Acting President when it was obvious that the late Yar'Adua could no longer continue in office as president as result of ill health.
It was said that Waziri was not only a nominee of former Delta State governor, James Ibori for the EFCC job but had the listening ears of the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa who were said to have facilitated her emergence as the agency's chairman.

Similarly, her inability to unravel those behind billions of naira Pension Fund Scandal after threatening to expose those behind the scam and their collaborators was unacceptable to many Nigerians who felt that the EFCC Boss must have compromised her position on corruption.

Another allegation against her was that instead of tracking corrupt officials and bringing them to book, she compromised her position in the effort to gratify those who helped her became the EFCC boss. For instance, it was said that of the 31 ex-governors facing corruption charges whose files she inherited on assumption of office, none of them has been charged to court. As result, there were deluge of petitions against her.

What may have sounded the death knell on Waziri's reign was the protracted war between her and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke.

Daily Champion learns authoritatively that Adoke feels that Waziri's activities should be supervised by the Attorney General of the Federation to ensure probity but such did not go down well with Waziri.

It was also gathered that Adoke had concluded plans on how to review the activities of the anti-graft body, and also curtail the over bearing powers of Waziri one of the ways was through a new government gazette. One of the reasons given by Adoke on the need to review the EFCC operations was as result of the excessive powers being wielded by the EFCC Chairman.

There is no iota of doubt that the autonomy of the EFCC may have also worked against her, for example, the EFCC under Waziri had the penchant to arrest some perceived enemies, detain them on mere allegations even when they were not ready with their charges.

A good example was the case of the former governor of Ogun, Gbenga Daniel. When the trial was to begin after the five weeks bail granted to the ex-governor, the EFCC pleaded more time to enable it establish some facts.

The EFCC is seen in some quarters as a tool against some perceived enemies since anybody can petition the body just to get at their political enemies. As a result, Adoke has stressed that the EFCC Chairman would continue like that.

"We would not allow a situation again where the head, who is also an executive chairman, oversees her own management function. It gives room for abuse; people should look at these things. How many times has the EFCC board met? You must not concentrate powers in the hands of a single individual; there must be checks and balance. So, the EFCC cannot also oversee its own operations.

"This is where the abuse, the impunities that we have seen in the system takes place, and this is what we are trying to correct; which the regulations has taken into consideration, taking into account of the overriding supremacy of the constitution. Nobody can question the constitution."

Accordingly, a section of the gazette says that "Where the Commission conducts investigation in respect of a case or complaint which is serious or complex, it shall forward to the Attorney General the outcome of the investigation with its recommendation on whether there are sufficient grounds to initiate prosecution."

According to Adoke, "What I expect of those critics, the majority of them intellectually dishonest, is that if they believe that power is unjustified, the right thing a decent person must do, rather than subject the dignity of this office to question, should have been to go to the National Assembly to seek an amendment to withdraw those powers. Until those powers are withdrawn, I would exercise them and I would not abuse them."
Analysts argue that EFCC under Waziri did not win the war against corruption, those who hold this view such as human rights activist, Olasupo Ojo, argues the body has not made any impact in the ant graft war

Ojo said: "In the beginning, one agency stood out clearly in the fight against corruption. That agency is the EFCC. Under the leadership of the former chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the commission clearly showed more commitment toward winning the war against corruption than other agencies. Unfortunately, it appears that the EFCC has lost its grip on this war. Right now, we feel that the commission is endangered."

As Ibrahim Lamorde settles down to work as the new EFCC helmsman, Nigerians are watching to see how far he can go in salvaging the EFCC sagging image

Waziri's Sack, Beginning of Reforms-Jonathan

Sulaimon Alamutu.

23 November 2011

Abuja — THE Presidency yesterday said the sack of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, was part of government's reforms to revitalise its fight against corruption.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Rueben Abati, yesterday in a statement, which came after the sudden sack of the EFCC chairman said, 'this is one of the series of reforms that will be taking place in the coming days.'

The statement explained that, 'President Goodluck Jonathan may in due course announce further reforms and will be looking at other key areas to give more vigorous emphasis to the administration's transformation agenda.'

An earlier statement by the President's spokesman, had said Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde would replace Waziri as acting chairman and chief executive of the anti-corruption agency.

The statement reads: 'President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde as the acting chairman/chief executive of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

'The appointment takes immediate effect, and effectively relieves Mrs. Farida Waziri of her position as EFCC chairman.

Waziri was appointed EFCC chairman by the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua on May 18, 2008 and confirmed by the Senate on May 27, 2008.

'Mr. Lamorde, an officer of the Nigeria Police, was, until this appointment the director of Operations of the EFCC.'
Only last week, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Terence McCulley, in an interview with Reuters, said corruption was clearly a problem in Nigeria. 'Corruption not only saps the confidence in people in government, it also discourages both national and foreign investment and I think it's a problem Nigeria needs to tackle more aggressively,' McCulley said.

He said a big step in Nigeria's development would be to put someone in charge of the country's anti-corruption agency with the integrity shown by Attahiru Jega, the man behind the successful elections in April.

But eminent Nigerians have reacted with mixed feelings to the sudden removal of Waziri, which came seven months to the end of her tenure in June 2012.

Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, said the sacked EFCC's boss did her best in the fight against corruption, adding that 'it is only posterity that can judge and assess her achievements as the chairman of the EFCC.'

Tsav, however, inferred that the sack of Mrs. Waziri might not be unconnected with her stepping on big toes by her recent arraignment of some eminent Nigerians, in addition to accusation that she was shielding George Akume, former Benue State governor from prosecution.

He said her sack might also be as a result of what he described 'as sustained and sponsored attack by Sahara reporters and other cynics for alleged and unproven abuse of office.'

He said, 'If the war against corruption must be won and sustained in Nigeria, there should be continuity and the political will to tame this monster.

'Although I am one of the supporters of Mrs. Waziri, I have no hard feelings on her removal. As a Muslim, I know that what has a beginning must have an end. Even life is not permanent.

She was appointed by the late President Yar'Adua; her removal by Jonathan was long foreseen.

'In Nigeria, our personal and selfish interests seem to override national interest. How can we succeed as a nation? I doff my heart for Mrs. Farida Waziri, OFR, for a job well done. Incidentally, the new man Ibrahim Lamorde served under Mrs. Waziri in the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the police,' Tsav said.

Constitutional lawyer, Fred Agbaje accused the Presidency of taking advantage of the 'lacuna' in Section 3 of the EFCC Act which says that 'the chairman of the commission can be removed for acts that are not in the best interest of the commission or for acts that are not in tandem with public interest.'

'Just ask me, who decides what acts are not in the interest of the public or what acts are not in the interest of the commission?

I will tell you it is the same appointing authority, Aso Rock! It is Aso Rock that appoints, it is Aso Rock which acts is in transgression of the commission.

'It is the same Aso Rock that decides which acts are not in the public interest. You see what is involved in holding the chairmanship of an organisation like the EFCC.
Because of the lacuna in the enabling law, the Presidency has taken advantage of this lacuna to get her out.

Maybe, we can invoke the Freedom of Information Act now and ask the president to give us the reasons. Those reasons he considered not to be in the public interest that led to her being removed,' he said.

Agbaje, in a telephone interview with The Moment, also said Mrs. Waziri might have stepped on big toes in the course of her duty, adding that it was a surprise that she lasted three years in the commission.

PoliticsWhy Farida Got The Sack by Jeel(op): 6:48pm On Nov 24, 2011
Mohammed S. Shehu And Ronald Mutum

There was palpable relief and excitement among top notchers of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] all across the country yesterday following the surprise sacking of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] chairman Mrs. Farida Waziri. President Goodluck Jonathan approved her sack the night before he left the country for Paris, but the State House in Abuja only made the public announcement after the president was airborne.

Nor was Mrs Waziri informed of her impending sack, which she first heard on television as the news was flashed while she held meetings in her office. A source said she was actually having a meeting with EFCC's Director of Operations Ibrahim Lamurde, a serving police officer who was appointed yesterday as EFCC's Acting Chairman.

Daily Trust learnt yesterday that the impetus to sack Waziri was brought about by the convergence of three different but overlapping interests: those of President Jonathan and his close circle of advisers; those of PDP chieftains in several states, especially the South West, and those of National Assembly members. However, the presidency was also encouraged by the fact that Nigerians as well as foreign diplomats, notably those of the US and the European Union, generally express displeasure at the lack of real progress in the anti-corruption war in the years since Mrs Waziri took over at EFCC.
Pressure to sack Waziri had been piled on President Jonathan over many months by Attorney General and Minister of Justice Mohamed Bello Adoke, PDP top notchers as well as by members of the National Assembly. While all of them claimed that their grouse against Waziri had to do with the slow movement in the anti-corruption war and the alleged corruption of the former chairman, Daily Trust learnt that they also alleged eagerness on the former EFCC chairman's part to embarrass PDP leaders and create political advantage for the opposition in some select states.

Usually well-informed sources told Daily Trust although the President and the Attorney General had been planning for many months to remove Mrs Waziri, they finally decided to make a move following "security reports" alleging that some persons had demanded for money, allegedly on behalf of the EFCC bosses, in order to stymie the prosecution of the four ex-PDP governors who were charged to court by EFCC last month. The reports said that people who claimed to be fronts for the EFCC chiefs were demanding millions of dollars in bribes from former Governors Muhammadu Danjuma Goje, Aliyu Akwe Doma, Adebayo Akala and Otumba Gbenga Daniel, as well as from ex-House of Representatives speaker Oladimeji Bankole and his former deputy, Usman Bayero Nafada. Figures as high as three million US dollars were mentioned in some cases.

Attorney General Adoke had been waging a personal crusade against Farida Waziri for many months, and his agents went as far as planting stories in the newspapers alleging that she never attained the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police. His aides also boasted two months ago that Farida would be sacked as soon as she returned from a trip to the US.

As for PDP leaders, they frowned at the arrest and charging to court of four ex-PDP governors in one fell swoop. They pointed out that no ex-governors form opposition parties had as yet been charged with similar offences and that EFCC's action tended to cripple and confuse PDP chapters in some states, notably Oyo and Nasarawa.

Members of the National Assembly were also very unhappy with Mrs Farida Waziri over the prosecution of Bankole and Nafada, which they saw as a hatchet job for the presidency in order to stop the emergence of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as House Speaker last June. However, since the presidency kept denying that it was involved, they were angry that EFCC continued to prosecute them. They were particularly angry that some people claiming to be acting for the EFCC demanded huge bribes from the two former legislators in order to stymie the prosecution.

Before yesterday's events, members of the House of Representatives had inched one step closer to making Mrs Waziri unqualified for the EFCC chairman's office. They read for the second time on October 26 a Bill seeking to amend the EFCC establishment Act, 2004 to provide for the appointment of a Supreme Court judge as chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Sponsored by Rep Bassey Eko Ewa (PDP, Cross Rivers), the bill is seeking to amend Section 2 of the EFCC Act to provide for the appointment of an Assistant Inspector General of Police as EFCC's head of investigation unit. Mrs. Waziri holds that rank.

On the other hand, the EFCC under Waziri had come under fierce criticism from Nigerians and foreign diplomats who complain that many of the high profile cases started by the agency soon got stuck. The prosecution of many former state governors since 2007 were all stalemated. But Mrs Waziri had blamed the courts for the delay, and she recently welcomed an order from new Chief Justice Dahiru Musdapher for all anti-corruption cases to be concluded within six months of filing.
The sacking of Mrs. Farida Waziri seven months to the end of her first term in office was announced in a terse statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati. The statement said, "President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Lamurde as the Acting Chairman/Chief Executive of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The appointment takes immediate effect, and effectively relieves Mrs. Farida Waziri of her position as EFCC Chairman. Mrs. Waziri was appointed EFCC Chairman by Late President Umaru Musa Yar'adua on May 18, 2008 and confirmed by the Senate on May 27, 2008.

"Mr. Lamurde, an officer of the Nigeria Police, was, until this appointment the Director of Operations of the EFCC. He was also Ag. Chairman of the EFCC before Mrs. Waziri assumed duty at the Commission."

When contacted yesterday, EFCC's spokesman Femi Babafemi said he had no comments to make on the changes at the commission.

Christianity Etc23 Reasons Why You Should Be A Christian by Jeel(op): 11:31am On Nov 23, 2011
Many people, at some stage of their lives, will ask the question "Why should I become a Christian?"

Well, here are 23 reasons why you should become a Christian. This page is designed to help those who don't know God, or why they should choose Jesus, to make an informed decision.

You should become a Christian so that:
1. So you don't get destroyed in Hell.
Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
2. So that you can be forgiven.
1John 2:12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake.
3. So that you can be Born Again.
John 3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again.
4. So that you can begin an incredible relationship with God.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, He gave to them authority to become the children of God, to those who believe on His name,
5. So that you can have peace.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
6. So that you will know the truth.
John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. For He shall not speak of Himself, but whatever He hears, He shall speak. And He will announce to you things to come.
7. So that you can have direction in life.
Psa 119:105 NUN: Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
8.

So that you can be set free.
Joh 8:36 Therefore if the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
9. So that you can rejoice.
Luk 19:37 And when He had come near, even now at the descent of the Mount of Olives, all the multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen,
10. Covering over children.
1Co 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; else your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
11. So that you may know the Cornerstone - a foundation on which to build.
Isa 28:16 therefore so says the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I place in Zion a Stone for a foundation, a tried Stone, a precious Cornerstone, a sure Foundation; he who believes shall not hurry. (Will not make hasty decisions)
12. So that you will have an ability to pray.
Mat 6:6 But you, when you pray, enter into your room. And shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly.
13. So that you may know healing.
Mat 10:1 And when He had called to Him His twelve disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
14. So that you can forgive others, and be forgiven.
Mat 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
15. So that you can be mature.
1Co 14:20 Brothers, do not be children in your minds, but in malice be like infants, and in your minds be mature.
16. So that you can have direction in life.
Psa 119:105 NUN: Your Word (Jesus) is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
17. So that you can say death, where is thy sting?
1Co 15:55 O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?"
18. So that you meaningful life.
Joh 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
19. So that you may know the power of prayer.
Joh 14:13 And whatever you may ask in My name, that I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
20. So that you may know God's support.
Mat 11:28 Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
21. So that you may know tremendous joy.
Joh 16:24 Before now you have asked nothing in My name; ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.
22. So that you may have understanding from God.
Mat 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.
Mat 13:17 For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear what you hear, and have not heard them.
23. So that you may have an inheritance in Heaven.
Joh 1:12 But as many as received Him, He gave to them authority to become the children of God, to those who believe on His name,

So why wouldn't you want to?

So many people avoid God because all they see is a rule book that will cramp their life style, but God is more than that. The things we hold on to are nothing in comparison with knowing Him.
