Jokes EtcWho's The Daddy? by Jemmie(op): 4:57pm On Oct 15, 2009
A father put his three year old daughter to bed, told her a story listened to her prayer which she ended by saying: 'God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma, and good-bye Grandpa.'
The father asked, 'Why did you say good-bye grandpa?'
The little girl said, 'I don't know daddy, it just seemed like the thing to say.'
The next day grandpa died. The father thought it was a strange coincidence.

A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this: 'God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and Good-bye Grandma.'
The next day the grandmother died.
'Oh my gosh' thought the father, 'this kid is in contact with the other side.'

Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say: 'God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy.'
He practically went into shock. He couldn't sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch sent in and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived; he breathed a sigh of relief and went home.
When he got home his wife asked, 'I've never seen you work so late, what's the matter?'
He said, 'I don't want to talk about it, I've just spent the worst day of my life.'
She replied, 'you think you had a bad day, you'll never believe what happened to me. This morning the gardener dropped dead in our backyard while I was watching!

Jokes EtcDoes Management Know Their Staff? by Jemmie(op): 3:45pm On Oct 15, 2009
On walking into the factory, the Managing Director of the company
noticed a young guy leaning against the wall, doing nothing.

He approached the young man and calmly said to him,
"How much do you earn?"

The young man was quite amazed
that he was asked such a personal question,
he replied, none the less, "I earn $ 2000.00 a month,
Sir. Why?"

Without answering, the MD took out his wallet
and removed $6000.00 cash and gave it to the young man and said,
"Around here I pay people for working,
not for standing around looking pretty!

Here is your 3 months salary, now GET OUT and don't come back".

The young man turned around and was quickly out of sight.

Noticing a few onlookers, the MD said in a very upset manner,
"And that applies to everybody in this company".

He approached one of the onlookers and asked him, "Who's the young man
I just fired?"

To which an amazing reply came - "He was the pizza delivery guy , Sir!"

CareerRe: Salary - How Much Is Enough To Sustain An Average Nigerian by Jemmie(op): 3:55pm On Oct 13, 2009
Well, I can assure you that not all self-employed enjoy their income. Remember, business is all about risk; you either make profit or lose or lose big. A self-employed can only cater for immediate problems and get hooked in the short run. This is because the money is always available at a time and not available at another time- its always easy to dig ones hands in to one's business money but at a time, the money will run low that it will not even take the business anywhere.

There are some things we can not control, some are known and some are not known. Examples are price inflation of essential commodities by govt, artificial scarcity, sudden global meltdown, etc.

The solution is planning and cutting off luxuries. If people concentrate more on necessities, I guess the salary/income will be fair. I know graduates who receive 30k while ND holders receive 80k+ in dsame org. Is it that there is no salary structure or that the HR needs to do a check on how people are placed in office-with what grade and qualification.

My bros and sis, expatrates come into Nig to work and park our money away. They are employed as expatrates but at the end Nigs do the work. While exp earns roughly the local staff 5 years salary in a year, the local keeps struggling to make ends meet.

Maybe we need to teach ourselves the tactics of management and planning in most affected areas of our lives. Whoever have something on this should not hesitate to share.

Am I making sense?
CareerRe: Plz Help. Me Ooh! by Jemmie: 12:13pm On Aug 19, 2009
mypeace, I agree with u. Half bread is better than none. A bird at hand , My concern is the type of job it is, whether he will have access to internet or communication where he get information on job vacancies. At times when in a job one finds it difficult to get another depending on the type of job.

An idle mind is the devils workshop, they say.

I could remember when I left a job I got another one in no time. Another was that because people knew about my professionalism i what I do I was offered a job 120% of my present job then though still very little but better. I left this work because of jealousy and my supervisor's urge to date me.

I will advise he takes the job and keeps his ears hanging out for job info.
CareerRe: Secretaries (Or Personal Assistants) On Nairaland by Jemmie: 11:19am On Aug 19, 2009
Hi House,

I really like this topic. Its interesting, educative and motivating.

I am an accountant and Marketer by profession but ended up in a secretarial job. At first I liked it. In my former job, my boss attempted to have an affair with me but I declined. He was furious about this but did not know what to do with me.

At a time he asked me to travel with him (he had a secetary while I was the admin officer but did secreatrial work too) to pursue a project. He said the secretary was a church goer and would not fit for the occassion because she was always asking for time off to attend church services (mfm). On this faithful day we travelled down to the place and we lodged in an hotel, hoping he would get me a room seperately, he requested for a suit. I was frightened though but i told myself I would not allow him. During dinner, I asked why he got a room for both of us, he laughed and asked if I was afraid he might sleep with me. I said No and Yes; Yes because he had asked me out before and No because I wanted to trust him as I had taken him as an uncle despite that he was my boss. He told me not to worry.

While we were asleep; I couldnt sleep I prayed for morning to come on time, he began to tourch me and I pleaded with. I did not heed to his request and left the bed to the chair which he forbade me earlier. He was upset with me and was always shouting at me.

Then another trip came, he asked me to still go with him I asked if he was going to ask me to sleep with him again, he said no. I went with him and to my surprise he had a girlfriend in that area whom he called to join us. Imagine, he kept us three in thesame room. I chose the chair while they slept in the bed. The chair was awful but i had no choice. Whateva happened was their problem.

However, afterwards he did not say anything about it again only tease me that I was not good enough was why I did not go with him. Always no response cos i did not want him to bring up the issue again. I noticed that he respected me the more. he seeks my opinion in some matters in the office and even talk to me about his family. He further entrusted his mother's business into my hands which I handled very well and he commented and appreciated me for it.

At a point he started dating a junior staff and I warned him about but always he would at me. I had to leave the company because I wanted to go NYSC. He pleaded with me not go and started recalling how good I had been to him and his businesses in general.

After service and haven worked in various company, I joined a big organization to work as admin assist. My boss was something else. There was nothing I did that he appreciated and friends began to ask whether he asked me out and I refused. They wanted to know whether he said it or used some body language and I said if he said it, I did not hear it and if used any body language I did not notice. They said male bosses like to date their secs and hate them if they refuse. At a time he reminded me that he made me get the job but could make me loose it as well. At that point I wanted to resign but my friends pleaded saying I should be patient. Am not bragging but I was better than my colleagues, they call me to help them out in some work which I always gladly take up. There was a time he sent a mail to HR saying all sorts of bad things about me; not knowing my job, not performing, etc. Fortunately for me he was frustrated by his own boss and resigned. what a relief.

Then came another and another. Now the boss I have works 24/7. He doesnt see my need for a improvement; seminars, workshops, etc.

Why do some bosses like to see us secs as nothing. Most especially when they can use computer packages as we would. Sometimes, my boss would take sides students, staff and visitors not listening to your own side of the story and when he does he would have made a conclusion on the matter with the 1st hearing.

Now I want to leave the job for a more challenging one. I am tired of the job. I have been on this one now for 5 consecutive years. And now its boring.

Theres a saying that once you do not derive pleasure in what u do, better u make a reverse. I understand a in the previous discuss that one should not leave ones job but at times you get so fed up all you want to do leave even if it means to stay home idle.
CareerRe: Salary - How Much Is Enough To Sustain An Average Nigerian by Jemmie(op): 3:16pm On Aug 17, 2009
Hmm, my brother, a big amen to that.

I do both - self-employed and an employee somewhere- but still it is not easy. My granmother use to say, no one eat two things in mecca' (translated). I guess what she meant was that you cant combine or do 2 things at a time; 1 stitch at a time. Buttressing her saying; I went to 2 higher institutions almost at the same time; polytechnic and a university. I didnt like both results but 1 is fairer. Am improving myself in all areas.

I was in poly when my admission came for the uni. I got a course I actually wanted to study in the uni and I was happy. i was advised not to drop the poly but at the end of the day, the result was poor. Could be as a result of the distance- lagos and ogun or that i was always sick-am not a sickler ooo or that the university system did not bother about the welfare of the students; missing results, assaults, distant relationship between lecturers and students, etc

Right now I work with an international institution where I used to like the job but not the pay. Now the pay is better but the job is something else-i have no interest in it anymore. Yet the pay can not carry me on. Imagine that.
NYSCNysc- Of What Use? by Jemmie(op): 3:02pm On Aug 17, 2009
Employers tend to ask for experiences in various jobs and the NYSC 1 year training gotten can not suffice that, can you imagine?

What would be your suggesteion, should the government scrap NYSC or retain it?

If NYSC is retained it has a way of giving little experience to graduates before the labor markets call. Though most of them get deployed to a company that does not even offer their kind of professions/services, e.g. a mechanical engineer being posted to law firm, a bank or an accounting institution. What would he do there, unscew and screw the financial aspects of the organization. Another example is where a statistician is being posted to a law firm, what is his business there.

If NYSC officials can be more discreet right corps members will be posted to the right organization and the right training and experience will be achieved.

Although, this kind of wrong posting allows the corps members to learn a different field. But is it helpful to their line of profession?

If NYSC is scrapped, corps members will use that 1 year for something more tangible. Most would even use it to search for jobs and attend some useful seminars, workshops, conferences, take some exams, etc rather than being tied up in an office.

Some corps members see the NYSC scheme as a mini jail/prison. This is not because they are not allowed to leave the camp until the end date of the camp but because what they are being offered as food for the 3 weeks is nothing to write home about, the environment in which they live in is not safe, the bed in which they sleep is not clean, etc. Some of these corps members(corpers) will not even offer such food to their pets.

Though, no one can satisfy anyone but I have been there and I know what its like to be in the camp. It was terrible, it got to a time I stopped eating what was prepared by NYSC in the camp; not only me but most of us. Thank God for me and am grateful to my mum, I left Lagos for Sokoto for service with Gari Ijebu, cabin bisuits, milk, sugar and some other beverages. With these I survived for a while. At times I usually go for the pap cos I like pap. Some of the friends I made laughed at me but alas, they sneaked out of camp to the market to get some gari. We ate late in our den and were looking good. Lagos-Sokoto, it was a different world entirely but I later came to enjoy the place. I applied this: love what you have/see. My last job was a Manager in a small company but I had to move; live goes on. My posting was in a village, in a dessert area (so I called it) with the walls of the buildings falling apart and behind your window what you see is an unending field with dead trees and hills and sands. Everyday I go to bed and i always thought of a lion at my door step, or a snake (anaconda), or any of these dreadful animal, but the interesting thing is I always conquer them in my thoughts. I worked in the Local Government but I was not really allowed to do anything, not even for a day. Service indeed! Don't let me bore you with this.

The main scheme is what we are talking about now. How effective is this to the society, the corpers, the government and those concerned?

If I may ask, what is your opinion?

Cheers!

Hello House,

It seems to me that joftech has made up his mind not to go to SCHOOL. He can wait till thy kingdom come but I dont think he will further his education.

Joftech I suppose, as he did not mention whether he passed his SSCE exams but missed classes a great deal, can never make it up to higher degree. Without a foundation, there is no good house/construction. The foundation of h any university degree is missing.

No university either home or abroad will admit a student without secondary school certificate results.

My brother, it is never too late to start over. Pick your pieces and dig them in - put them together and in the right. places. Even Bill Gates will not employ you as much as he knew that you are like his kind; background and into IT.

House, I was interested in the topic that was I clicked to share in the discussion. Abeg, make una continue. This is an avenue to share and correct opinions of some sorts. No FIGHTING sha!

Seun and Kaycey, u both are right, I guess the prob here is definition. We all have the idea of the topic is all about. Lets continue with the topic and leave some stones outside this topic unturned.

Great work guyz!
CareerWhere Is Mour President? by Jemmie(op): 1:10pm On Aug 17, 2009
While Nigeria was having internal crisis, the president was out on a visit to a foreign country. Am sure this visit could wait no matter what.

As a leader, in the midst of a war, would you run or leave your people to face it all by themselves? Taking the movie, 300, for example, the king was a warrior and fought to the last. Leave the fact that he was disobedient, arrogant and wanted to prove something but he was in front of the war even though he did not succeed.

Facing the battle when necessary and on time is a quality a leader should have.

During the American diplomatic visit, my president was away on health issues. Who then do we think wants to clear corruption, make Nigeria a better place and invite Nigerians in diaspora and foreigners to come see and live in Nigeria with safe minds.

The Nigerian security was cracking globally and our leader(s) are busy pleasing themselves. Where is our Constitution?

Surely, one day, a real leader will be born to rule and clean up Nigeria, one day!
CareerSalary - How Much Is Enough To Sustain An Average Nigerian by Jemmie(op): 12:59pm On Aug 17, 2009
Talking of salaries, no amount is enough to sustain an average salary earner.

Who is an average salary earner? Can you imagine. Salaries are paid according to either ones academic records, experience or both. Most organizations do not follow the salary scheme and as such it affects the employees.

However, some Nigerians do not have enough qualification and experience in order to earn what they are supposed to be earning at that stage in life. Again, some Nigerians have every qualifications and experience needed to acquire a particular job but because the jobs are either not available or that the positions have been filled with the so-called socialites/politicians' families who do not have 1/2 the needed qualifications required.

Things are very expensive in the market - thanks to the Federal Government. As the government claim to improve the standard of living of its subjects it stylishly destroys them knowingly or unknowingly after adding a few pennies to their salaries. Everything goes up in the market; edible, domestic things, etc. Transportation and every other means of having a better living get so expensive that they become luxuries for some people.
BusinessRe: How Do Banks Make Their Money? by Jemmie: 12:34pm On Aug 17, 2009
Richybank,

Almost everyone is right.

It depends on the kind of account you operate; savings or current. If you operate savings account, no charges will be made on your money instead you receive interest-which amounts to nothing- on your money. However, if you receive text messages and emails from your bank, there are fees charged to it - though very little.

If you operate current accounts, you rather pay some charges to the bank instead. With your current account, you make use of cheque books which has been overridden ATM. If you withdrew with cheques then be ready to pay charges too.

If you collect loan(s) you will be charged.

Overall, either savings or current, a charge (COT) is deducted from our account if your cash a certain amount of thousands (N5 per a thousand).

However, banks do deduct some hidden costs/charges which will be known to the customer after a thorough check on the statement of account.

Most Nigerians do not pick up their bank statement from their banks, so how would they know what is happening to their monies.

Example; I collected loan to run an international business, i was told what i will be charged but i wasnt told about other charges which later cropped up in my bank statement. What do you call that? Normal banking operation? I asked my banker and he told me that those monies were necessary. Well, I have collected the loan, what do I do. Another thing I looked at foolishly was that it was a little money (N200, N20,etc) put together amounts to about N500 or less. But this happens monthly and imagine if it happens to about 5000 nigerian, how much will that be monthly.

Well, lets hope someone will come to really sweep corruption out of Nigerian system.

Regards!
