Fifa suspends Nigeria from all global footballing
activities over state interference

NIGERIA have been suspended from all
international football competitions by global
federation Fifa in response to the recent
interference by the government into the running of
the Nigerian Football Federation's (NFF) affairs.
Under the terms of Fifa's statutes, national football
associations are supposed to be independent of
the government and free from ministerial
interference. However, following Nigeria's World
Cup exit, sports minister Tamuno Danagogo
relieved NFF president Aminu Maigari of his job
and called an extra-ordinary congress to elect an
interim board.
Last Saturday, the government-convened NFF
general assembly consisting of all the chairmen
and secretaries of the football associations of
Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital
Territory, met in Abuja to ratify the government's
decision. Among other things, the congress
unanimously endorsed the dissolution of the
Maigari–led NFF executive committee and the
immediate termination of the employment of all
management staff, as well as the dissolution of the
boards of the Nigeria National League, Nigeria
Women League and the Nigeria Nationwide League.
In a swift response to this breach, Fifa has
suspended Nigeria from all footballing events until
the Maigari-led NFF board is reinstituted. Taking
effect from yesterday, the ban means all Nigerian
teams and officials are barred from international
matches and meetings from henceforth.
Fifa has set a July 15 deadline to resolve the
problem, or Nigeria faces exclusion from the
Under-20 Women’s World Cup that starts in
August in Canada. Among Fifa's demands are that
the Nigerian government withdraw its legal order
for the sports ministry to appoint new federation
leaders.
A Fifa spokesman said: “The Fifa Emergency
Committee has decided today, 9 July 2014, to
suspend the Nigeria Football Federation with
immediate effect, on account of government
interference. The suspension will be lifted once the
court actions have been withdrawn and the
properly elected NFF executive committee, the NFF
general assembly and the NFF administration are
able to work without any interference in their
affairs.”
Among other things, the legal order empowers the
sports minister to appoint a senior civil servant to
take over the running of Nigerian football. In the
past, Nigeria has been similarly suspended by Fifa
but the matter has always been quickly resolved
with either side backing down.

paid a courtesy visit to the university’s Vice-
Chancellor, Professor Fidelis Okafor.
Receiving the CP alongside the vice-chancellor
were the Registrar, Okwudili Okechukwu; Bursar,
Prince Chinedu Okeke; Librarian, Dr. Nobert
Agbanu; Chief Security Officer, Obi Okonkwo and
the university’s spokesperson, Chinwe Nnedum.
The commissioner of police said: “The hallmark of good policing is being proactive. My VC, I urge you and the university’s Chief Security Officer to always call on me whenever the need arises, as my utmost desire since arrival is to give the state unparalleled security of lives and property.”
Okafor said: “Thank you once more for including
ANSU in your security map. Like other institutions,
ANSU deals with youths of different colorations and
backgrounds, battling with cultism and other
negative tendencies of the youth. As parts of our
determination to rid the school of cult-related
activities, at least 497 students denounced cultism
in 2012. Since then, the school has been enjoying
peace and tranquility, unlike what obtained before
then.”
Similarly, the Registrar, Okwudili Okechukwu
thanked the CP for visiting the university, assuring
him of a good working relationship and
cooperation with the state’s Police command.

on how to tackle the problem.

According to him, the appointment of the new
Vice Chancellor takes effect from July 16, 2014.
The Pro-Chancellor explained that the new Vice
