Prof. Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, the UNILORIN VC has stated that out of 105,00 candidates applying at the institution, only 9,000 will be admitted. This is a relatively poor number, but the institution can’t go beyond that due to the carrying capacity at hand. He further disclosed to journalists on Sunday while speaking with them that UNILORIN is the most sought after school in Nigeria followed by UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, UNIBEN. The VC identified accommodation as a major challenge of the institution, as he stated that though the university has currently about 30,000 students, it could provide admission for only about 3,000 of the students. more like this here |

A heart breaking news arises at UNN as Undergraduates Violently Confront their Post-graduate Counterparts. University of Nigeria Nsukka undergraduates on Saturday night engaged their Post-graduate counterparts in a squabble which almost degenerated to a free-for–all- fight. The problem started when some undergraduate male hostel occupants started protesting to register their grievances over the fact that they have not had electric power supply in their hostels for over a week. They thus demanded that all generators should be put off. As senior is always senior, the postgraduate male hostel occupants refused, which led to a fight as they in turn attacked them. This infuriated the undergraduates who started destroying everything on sight around the PG male hostel, cars parked outside the postgraduate male hostels had their windscreens shattered, and stones were seen flying in the air as both engaged one another. As if it has ended, the UG blocked the PG entrance in the morning and said they should remain inside arrested. It finally took the intervention of the Police and Military personnel to bring the situation under control. source http://www.schoolmeout.com/problem-unn-undergraduates-violently-confront-post-graduate-counterparts/ |

www.schoolmeout.com FIFA has lifted the ban it placed on Nigeria on July 9th after a high court sitting in Jos sacked the President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Aminu Maigari and other board members. FIFA had frowned at the court ruling, stating that the move was a government interference in football activities which is against its policy. FIFA then directed that a new court order reinstating Maigari and other NFF executives be obtained before it can lift the ban. The new court order reinstating the NFF President and other executives was obtained two days ago, Tuesday July 15th, hence the lifting of the ban today. Maigari and his board will resume their duties tomorrow and stay there until next month's elections when they could be sacked through the ballot, in line with FIFA's policies. http://lindaikeji..com/2014/07/fifa-lifts-ban-on-nigeria.html?m=1 |
Dear moderator, I see this post yo worth front page : https://www.nairaland.com/1817169/each-ac-car-user-must Thanks |
Plz circulate To Each AC Car user,Now this is very interesting & MUST READ , as it's for HEALTH !...Car's manual says to roll down the windows to let out all the hot air before turning on the A/C. WHY ? No wonder more folks are dying from cancer than ever before. We wonder where this stuff comes from, but here is an example that explains a lot of the cancer-causing incidents. Many people are in their cars the first thing in the morning, and the last thing at night, 7 days a week. Please do NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car. Open the windows after you enter your car and then after a couple of minutes, turn ON the AC . Here's why: According to research, the car's dashboard, seats, a/c ducts, in fact ALL of the plastic objects in your vehicle, emit Benzene, a Cancer causing toxin. A BIG CARCINOGEN. Take the time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car when you open it, and BEFORE you start it up. In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anaemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure can cause Leukemia and increases the risk of some cancers. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women. The "acceptable" Benzene level indoors is: 50mg per sq.ft. A car parked indoors, with windows closed, will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene - 8 times the acceptable level. If parked outdoors in the sun, at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level. People who get into the car, keeping the windows closed, will eventually INHALE excessive amounts of the BENZENE toxin. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff. So friends, please open the windows and doors of your car - give it some time for the interior to air out -(dispel the deadly stuff) - before you enter the vehicle. Thought: 'When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. Hello my honourable moderator, I consider the post on https://www.nairaland.com/1816238/reveal-smelling-farts-prevent-cancer to worth front page. Thanks |
It is Revealed that Smelling Farts can Prevent Cancer & Heart Attacks You may want to thank your friends or family when next they fart near you. Time reports that scientists at the University of Exeter claim that smelling farts could actually prevent cancer, among other diseases. In the statement by the university, Dr. Mark Wood says, “Although hydrogen sulfide gas” – produced when bacteria breaks down food – “is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases.” Another scientist Professor Matt Whiteman who worked on the study to be published in the Medicinal Chemistry Communications Journal, said “We have exploited this natural process by making a compound, called AP39, which slowly delivers very small amounts of this gas specifically to the mitochondria.” They say that although a full release may be noxious, a whiff has the power to reduce risks of cancer, strokes, heart attacks, arthritis, and dementia by preserving mitochondria. Amazon Web Services (AWS ) seems to have the Midas touch. Seemingly everything the Seattle bookseller’s cloud infrastructure division introduces ends up being category-leading. That’s awesome for Amazon but pretty horrid for all those left in the wake of the juggernaut. The latest (and, admittedly, entirely natural) area for AWS to introduce product in is the burgeoning Mobile Backend as a Service (MBaaS) area. Essentially all these tools aim to help mobile developers move on from reinventing the wheel. Instead of having to rebuild core mobile functionality for every single application, MBaaS lets developers abstract the “undifferentiated heavy lifting” or in other words the stuff that they have to do that adds no real value to the app. I spent some time taking a briefing on the offering with the head of the MBaaS product team, Jinesh Varia. As an aside, only 12 months ago analyst briefings and NDA advice of product announcements from AWS were completely unheard of. AWS has, in that time, built up an excellent analyst relations team. While this is a small part of truly becoming an enterprise vendor, it is a critical part of the process. It’s refreshing to see AWS move in this direction. Anyway, on to the announcement...... www.schoolmeout.com Varia told me that, like other AWS products, the development team has been driven by observing how their customers were utilizing AWS’ services. Obviously a vast number of developers building upon AWS use a number of different solutions to create mobile applications. AWS noticed a significant amount of reworking whereby customers would have to spend time and effort recreating the same basic building blocks for their applications. AWS is in the habit of giving developers tools to remove these basic jobs from their workflow and in doing so allows them to focus on key deliverables. Removing the “undifferentiated heavy lifting” as AWS loves to say. There are three key announcements in terms of the MBaaS product offering: Amazon Cognito, Amazon Mobile Analytics and Amazon SNS Mobile Push. Looking at each of these in turn: Amazon Cognito fills the identity management and authorization, data synchronization and offline access problem spaces. The identity and access management components are currently integrated with Facebook , Google GOOGL -0.29% + and Amazon itself. In terms of cross-device and cross platform sync, Cognito enables offline support by storing data in an SQLLite local database when no connectivity exists. When connectivity is restored, data sync happens back to the cloud. Finally, and in an interesting twist, AWS allows for unauthenticated identities in order to help create a better user experience and easier on boarding. Another benefit of unauthenticated access is that it provides opportunities for connected devices (as opposed to connected users) to access cloud services. Amazon analytics is an analytical service designed for mobile and powered by AWS’ other analytics platforms. It generates rapid reports and enables reports to be generated across millions of individual users. In a comment that can only be seen as a thinly veiled barb at Google, AWS points out that its analytics service does not aggregate user data and hence the customers have sole, unfettered access to their own data. The analytics come with a host of standard measures that are useful to developers, Monthly Active Users, Daily Active Users, Daily Sessions, Average Revenue etc. Users can also track custom event types. Finally AWS is introducing SNS Mobile Push. Using the product, developers or their applications can send push notifications seamlessly across multiple platforms globally. SNS Push works across iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Windows platforms. In terms of pricing, Cognito is free for less than one million syncs per month with 10GB of storage, although this is limited to new customers only and only for a 12 months period. Mobile Analytics is free for 100 million events per month and SNS Mobile Push is free for one million push message per month. Paid plans are available for higher requirements but this generous free tier is an indication that AWS sees this more as a way to keep people on its platform than it is to generate meaningful incremental revenue. I did have some questions about the offering. Firstly, where are the native integrations with different location-based services? Location is a key value proposition of mobile apps and I’d have liked to have seen something location based here. I also suspect that a significant proportion of AWS’ customers would respond well to a packaged rather than componentized MBaaS offering – while AWS prides itself on offering everything as a module, MBaaS is one area that a more packaged offering makes sense. This was a theme that Staves Sridhar, CEO of MBaaS vendor Kinvey reiterated when he said that: Indeed. Notwithstanding any competitive landscape issues, these offerings are yet another compelling driver for AWS to gain new, and keep existing, customers. It’s hard to compete with someone so crazily successful as the Amazon powerhouse. www.schoolmeout.com source http://www.forbes.com/sites/benkepes/2014/07/10/amazon-picks-mobile-development-as-its-new-product-category-to-dominate/ |
https://www.nairaland.com/1815801/blood-types-why#24739091 It treats why we have blood types. Very educational. Do publish to front page |
At the point when my guardians told me that my blood type was A+, I felt an odd feeling of pride. On the off chance that A+ was the top grade in school, then without a doubt A+ was likewise the best of blood types – a biological mark of distinction. It didn’t take long for me to perceive exactly how senseless that inclination was and pack it down. Be that as it may I didn’t learn substantially all the more about what it truly looks like to have A+ blood. When I was a grown-up, all I truly knew was that in the event that I ought to wind up in a clinic in need of blood, the specialists there would need to verify they transfused me with a suitable sort. Though i don not accept Blood Transfusions for Biblical Reasons, As the bible condemns it. But there stayed some bothering inquiries. Why do 40% of Caucasians have type A blood, while just 27% of Asians do? Where do distinctive blood types originate from, and what do they do? To get a few replies, I went to the experts – to hematologists, geneticists, evolutionary biologists, virologists and nutrition scientists. In 1900 the Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner first discovered blood types, winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research in 1930. Since then scientists have developed ever more powerful tools for probing the biology of blood types. They’ve found some intriguing clues about them – tracing their deep ancestry, for example, and detecting influences of blood types on our health. And yet I found that in many ways blood types remain strangely mysterious. Scientists have yet to come up with a good explanation for their very existence. “Isn’t it amazing?” says Ajit Varki, a biologist at the University of California, San Diego. “Almost a hundred years after the Nobel Prize was awarded for this discovery, we still don’t know exactly what they’re for.” Transfusion confusion My knowledge that I’m type A comes to me thanks to one of the greatest discoveries in the history of medicine. Because doctors are aware of blood types, they can save lives by transfusing blood into patients. But for most of history, the notion of putting blood from one person into another was a feverish dream. Renaissance doctors mused about what would happen if they put blood into the veins of their patients. Some thought that it could be a treatment for all manner of ailments, even insanity. Finally, in the 1600s, a few doctors tested out the idea, with disastrous results. A French doctor injected calf’s blood into a madman, who promptly started to sweat and vomit and produce urine the colour of chimney soot. After another transfusion the man died. Such calamities gave transfusions a bad reputation for 150 years. Even in the 19th Century only a few doctors dared try out the procedure. One of them was a British physician named James Blundell. Like other physicians of his day, he watched many of his female patients die from bleeding during childbirth. After the death of one patient in 1817, he found he couldn’t resign himself to the way things were. “I could not forbear considering, that the patient might very probably have been saved by transfusion,” he later wrote. Blundell became convinced that the earlier disasters with blood transfusions had come about thanks to one fundamental error: transfusing “the blood of the brute”, as he put it. Doctors shouldn’t transfer blood between species, he concluded, because “the different kinds of blood differ very importantly from each other”. Human patients should only get human blood, Blundell decided. But no one had ever tried to perform such a transfusion. Blundell set about doing so by designing a system of funnels and syringes and tubes that could channel blood from a donor to an ailing patient. After testing the apparatus out on dogs, Blundell was summoned to the bed of a man who was bleeding to death. “Transfusion alone could give him a chance of life,” he wrote. Several donors provided Blundell with 14oz (0.4kg) of blood, which he injected into the man’s arm. After the procedure the patient told Blundell that he felt better – “less fainty” – but two days later he died. Still, the experience convinced Blundell that blood transfusion would be a huge benefit to mankind, and he continued to pour blood into desperate patients in the following years. All told, he performed 10 blood transfusions. Only four patients survived. While some other doctors experimented with blood transfusion as well, their success rates were also dismal. Various approaches were tried, including attempts in the 1870s to use milk in transfusions (which were, unsurprisingly, fruitless and dangerous). Prize discovery Blundell was correct in believing that humans should only get human blood. But he didn’t know another crucial fact about blood: that humans should only get blood from certain other humans. It’s likely that Blundell’s ignorance of this simple fact led to the death of some of his patients. What makes those deaths all the more tragic is that the discovery of blood types, a few decades later, was the result of a fairly simple procedure. The first clues as to why the transfusions of the early 19th Century had failed were clumps of blood. When scientists in the late 1800s mixed blood from different people in test tubes, they noticed that sometimes the red blood cells stuck together. But because the blood generally came from sick patients, scientists dismissed the clumping as some sort of pathology not worth investigating. Nobody bothered to see if the blood of healthy people clumped, until Karl Landsteiner wondered what would happen. Immediately, he could see that mixtures of healthy blood sometimes clumped too. Landsteiner set out to map the clumping pattern, collecting blood from members of his lab, including himself. He separated each sample into red blood cells and plasma, and then he combined plasma from one person with cells from another. continue reading at http://www.schoolmeout.com/FORUMS/topic/blood-types/
