Professor Folasade Ogunsola has secured the highest number of votes in the election held by members of the University of Lagos Senate to choose an acting Vice-Chancellor.

The Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal has dismissed the election which led to the emergence of the state governor, Douye Diri and ordered the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) within 90 days.

The verdict follows the petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) challenging the victory of Governor Diri in the November 19 governorship election and claiming that the party was unlawfully excluded from the election.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, says there is no going back in its rejection of the removal of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

If you talk to most people, you will discover that they actually mean well in their criticism of what government does. But they don't have much of a breadth on knowledge or understanding of what the real issues are, when it comes to governance. They listen to pundits who feed them with what they are supposed to think and they keep repeating that until pretty soon they say, “Oh, well that must be true.”

While such pundits cannot be stopped from informing the people, they should also not be estopped from saying exactly what they see. That Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, is becoming the most talked-about governor in the areas of value restoration, development and social investment is beyond mere adulation or propaganda. The discerning ones within the opposition party have equally confirmed his exemplary leadership and described him as a visionary leader who knows where to head and how to get there.

Ekiti faces developmental challenges and capacity constraints as a small state. Even when its government aspires to higher standard of living for the people, it must struggle with the limited material and human resources. Its size and Gross Domestic Product are relatively small and can easily pin the state down. Going by the 2015 ranking, Ekiti is the least favoured among the Southwestern states. Its GDP stood at $3.6 Billion with per capita of $1.133m and a labour force of 1.4m.

Lagos led the pack with a whopping GDP of $50.8 Billion, per capita of $4,182 and a workforce of 7.7m. Oyo came second with $27.3 Billion GDP, $3,596 per capita and 4.4m labour force, followed by Ogun with $18.5 billion GDP, $3,660 per capita and 2.4m workforce, then Ondo with $11bn GDP, $2,423 per capita and 2.4m workforce. Osun is also ahead of Ekiti with $10bn GDP, $2,199 per capita and 2.3m workforce.

Fayemi did not find these statistics scary, intimidating or discouraging. Whereas people are wondering how the wonder-working governor has been able to navigate the first year of his second term in office seamlessly, he, on the other hand, has been saying it’s no big deal at all. In the same state that somebody grumbled about the weight of workers and pensioners salaries, emoluments, pensions and gratuities, where school children were being taxed, where social welfare packages initially introduced by Fayemi himself in office were cancelled and laudable projects allowed to rot away, Fayemi returned and restored all these lost glories within the first one year.

Whether Fayemi is seeing this as a problem, a challenge or an opportunity is left for the pundits to unravel. And the best way to do this is to check the rating of Fayemi’s government in the last one year. Despite the less-competitive economy and paucity of funds, Fayemi’s Ekiti has continued to attract rave reviews as a leading light in how a state should be run. The World Bank congratulated the state as the best performer under the National Urban Water Sector Reform Project and the third best performing state under the Community and Social Development Project. The Progressive Governors’ Forum commended Ekiti State for recording the highest number of initiatives in the Forum’s Development Initiative Tracking, spreading across empowerment, job creation, healthcare, etc. The Central Bank of Nigeria rated Ekiti State high on the Ease of Doing Business Chart. The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development recognized Ekiti as the Best Performing State on domestication of Women Rights Instruments.

On a personal level, but also in recognition of his leadership qualities, Fayemi emerged the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum barely six months after mounting the saddle as Ekiti Governor, the first Governor from the southwest to be bestowed with such honour. Same month that Fayemi became the NGF Chair, his wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi also bagged the Zik Prize for Humanitarian Service Award. All these point to the values Fayemi has been creating for the state that had hitherto been regarded as debased.

Fayemi exposed the secret of his success thus: “Government’s policies and programmes the world over thrive on the involvement of the people…as a Government, we cannot do it alone or succeed in isolation. A tree does not make a forest. We need the support and cooperation of the corporate world, Donor agencies, Federal Government and of course, Ekiti people to succeed as a government. For us therefore, to build on the gains of the past, all hands must be on deck to move our dear State forward economically, socially and politically.”

Fayemi is an unrepentant enthusiast of value creation and best practices, making Good Governance, agriculture and rural development, knowledge economy, infrastructural development and social investment his article of faith, and the five pillars upon which he is building second term in office, codenamed JKF2.0.

Just within a short span of JKF2.0, investors are falling over themselves, wooing and allowing themselves to be wooed by Ekiti State Government. The World Bank and African Development Bank have accented to supporting the state with $100 million loan to build the Ekiti Knowledge Zone, Special Agriculture Processing Zone, Ado-Akure road and Ekiti Airport. The state government has also partnered Nigeria’s leading food and beverage giant, Promasidor Nigeria Limited for a $5 million investment to revamp the moribund Ikun Dairy Farm located at Ikun Ekiti.

These are just a tip of the iceberg of what Fayemi has been able to attract to the state. He is a leader with a futuristic vision and he knows how to turn his ideas into real-world success stories. Pundits who study him well will attest to the fact he is a visionary leader. He would plan ten years ahead and nothing could derail him from implementing such plan. He does not lose focus, notwithstanding the noise or chaos around him.

That Fayemi scored high marks in the first year of his second term was therefore no fluke. While observers regarded it as his first year, insiders were quick to point it out that it was a continuation of his long-term plan during his first term in office, codenamed JKF1.0. Then, he had introduced landmark initiatives across the state and had recorded monumental achievements.

To understand where the governor is leading his people, pundits need to measure him with the following parameters: Honesty and integrity, confidence, ability to inspire others, commitment and passion, good communication, decision-making capabilities and accountability. And if they are able to score him high in them all, then, Ekiti people are assured that they have the right captain steering the ship, and the only place they can be led at this point is to their _Eldorado._

Due to numerous phone calls and inquiries these past few weeks,I have been forced to come up with these simple advice to aid the smooth purchase of large acres of agricultural farmlands in Edo State.
I have noticed that due to the present economic recession our country is experiencing lots of people have gotten interested in going into large scale agriculture and thus high demand for large acres of land.
Some dubious individuals have seen this as an opportunity to scam individuals of their hard earned cash.
The advice I'm about to share here is for individuals or companies that want to purchase land in Edo state for agricultural purposes,based on first hand experience in this business.
Edo State as reflected in the recently concluded governorship elections is the most peaceful state in the South-South region. As opposed to popular belief,they are very amiable and accommodating.
The following points should be considered or put into play when purchasing or negotiating for farm lands.
*In as much as there is availability of large expanse of land in Edo state,most communities are very unwilling to sell as what is mostly available is "reserve community lands". Even if they agree to sell they usually make requests,such as the company/individual will provide borehole and other basic social amenities/services(time frame varies from one community to the other) as well as employment of their youths.
*Please Be careful and wary of ridiculous prices.E.g #40,000/acre.Some individuals will sell you a dummy,collect your money while feasting on your perceived greed and ignorance.Most lands sold in this manner might be collected back by various means, as all they are interested in is using you to clear or cultivate the lands,while they claim ownership after some very few short years.
*I have seen adverts claiming to have 700acres for sale,pls make sure u do thorough investigation before purchase as most of such adverts are scams. Most of these communities do not know exactly what an acre mean, neither do they know the exact number of acres they have.They only give estimates. Make sure the boundaries with other communities is well defined,and if there is a merger between communities,there should be thorough investigation, negotiations and a water tight agreement between the communities and yourself.The history of the communities should also be thoroughly investigated.
*No INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY can sell large acres of land,don't be fooled.Make sure u meet with both the Elders and youths of the community and reach an understanding and agreement before purchase.
*Make sure the land you intend to buy isn't a disputed land or encroaching into other community lands.
*Ensure you obey or comply with the customs and traditions of the host community. The people of Edo state take their culture and traditions very seriously.
*In the course of negotiations,it's very essential that you earn and keep the trust of the host community by keeping to time in every appointment and keeping to your words. Be firm and always state clearly what you want and expect,this should also be reflected in your agreement with the community when signed.
*Make sure every transaction is well documented and recorded.Make use of video recording for every meeting and transaction if possible.
*Always ensure you meet with the Community head and try to get the history of the community.
*Please ensure that the community has no issue of hostility.Some communities are not amiable due to the attitude of it's indigins.This might make doing business in such community quite unpleasant.
*Most communities cannot afford the expenses of doing a survey of their lands. Please make sure you do a land survey and CofO as soon as possible. If you don't have adequate cash to do a CofO, endeavor to do a land survey.
*Endeavour to do some form of fencing around your land, it should be well defined.
*Most documents available when purchasing large acres of land is community paper or certificate. Make sure your lawyer prepares a very good water tight agreement between you and the community.
*Above all follow your instincts and intuition.
*Ensure you get an agent that is specialized in agricultural real estate,that can help with your search,investigations and negotiations.Communication with your agent and community is very important and essential!

Nigeria’s federal government and sub-regional body ECOWAS are working hard to ensure terrorists in the region do not resort to the use of chemical and biological weapons.

This was the submission of permanent secretary, political affairs, in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ambassador Olukunle Bamgbose.

Bamgbose says the government hopes to achieve its objective, by ensuring stricter control of the purchase, use and proliferation of such weapons.

Bamgbose made the comment at the opening of a five-day national workshop on Assistance and Protection Against Chemical Weapons in Abuja yesterday, October 31.

Osissa community in the Ndokwa-East Local Government Area of Delta State are currently protesting and holding the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Festus Ovie Agas, and his convoy hostage over the alleged killing of three members of the community by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The protesters numbering over one thousand intercepted the convoy of the SSG who was traveling to Asaba after spending the weekend with his family in Ughelli at about 6:55am along the Ughelli-Asaba express on Monday.

Sources told our correspondent that other travelers including those going to Onitsha market in Anambra State were also trapped in the protest.

Two members of the rampaging herdsmen who invaded the community with their cattle were nabbed by officers from the Ashaka Police Station.

Our correspondent gathered on Monday morning that the situation took another turn Sunday evening when the herdsmen allegedly attacked again killing at least three persons in the community.
