Christianity Etc › Re: Does Romans 2:7 Teach Works Salvation? by jiggaz(m): 12:10pm On Mar 26, 2019 |
solite3: Does Romans 2:7 teach works salvation?
Question: "Does Romans 2:7 teach works salvation?" Answer: Romans 2:7 states, “To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.” Taken alone, these words seem to indicate works are required for salvation and eternal life. However, examined within their larger context and alongside many other biblical passages, it becomes clear that salvation is solely a gift of God by grace through faith.
The conclusion of Paul’s arguments in Romans 2 focuses on a changed heart that leads to changed actions. Romans 2:28–29 emphasizes true, spiritual conversion: “A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.” The believer is one whose heart has been “circumcised” by the Spirit; this person is right with God, whereas someone physically circumcised, according to “the written code,” may or may not be born again. The contrast is between the righteousness that comes by faith versus that which is sought through the Law. Romans 2:7 mentions the righteous acts that result from having a changed heart; our godly actions are evidence of our salvation, as James, John, and Peter also discuss in their letters.
Paul’s words in Romans 2:7 cannot be considered apart from what he writes elsewhere in the same letter. Paul pointedly defines salvation as a free gift: “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. . . . All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” ( Romans 3:22 , 24). Later, he says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” ( Romans 6:23).
Romans 2:7 does not teach a works-based salvation. Such a “gospel” was anathema to Paul (see Galatians 1:6–9 ). In all his epistles, including Romans, Paul makes the case that salvation is not received by works that we do: • “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law” ( Romans 3:20). • “For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law” ( Romans 3:28). • “However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness” ( Romans 4:5 ). • “And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace” ( Romans 11:6 ).
The repeated theme of Romans is salvation by God’s grace through faith . Paul’s other writings emphasize this theme as well. Ephesians 2:8–9 is a good example: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Other New Testament writers, and Jesus Himself, demonstrate that salvation is a gift of God and not something earned through our works ( John 3:16–18 ; 6:28–29; 1 Peter 1:3–9 ; 1 John 3:1–5 ; 5:1–12 ). The biblical message is clear: salvation is not by works but by God’s grace, and it is received through faith. Romans 2:7 does not teach salvation by works; rather, it sets up a contrast between those who are changed by God’s grace and live for Him and those who reject His salvation and truth (verse 8 ). In Romans 2:7, those who “by persisting in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality” are those who have genuinely trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, by grace through faith. Beautiful message... God bless you. |

Hebrews 10:17 …“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” I don’t know about you, but I would say that Hebrews 10:17 is good news. God sees all our sins—past, present and future—and says, “Your sins I remember no more!” The words “no more” are a strong double negative in the original Greek text. In other words, God is saying, “Your sins I will by no means ever remember!” Has God lowered His standards? No, He is still perfectly holy. He did remember all our sins—2,000 years ago at the cross. Every sin which we have committed or will commit has been punished to the full in the body of Jesus Christ at the cross. That is why today, God remembers our sins no more. We should, therefore, not be sin-conscious. Each time we feel condemned for our past mistakes, God wants us to remember the cross and say, “Lord Jesus, you were sentenced for this sin I committed. You bore the judgment, so God will not judge me for this sin. You were condemned for this sin, so God will not condemn me for it.” If you don’t look to the cross, you will become sin-conscious and you will walk around with a certain expectation of judgment. And that expectation of judgment will give the devil a chance to get you thinking that God has something against you because of your sin. You must come to the place where you know and believe that all your sins are forgiven, and that you are saved eternally.Hebrews 10:12, 14 says, “But this Man [Jesus], after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God…For by one offering He has perfected forever…” You and I are perfected forever because of Jesus’ perfect work on the cross. We are perfected by God’s full acceptance and perfect delight in His Son’s work that has so glorified His holiness. Beloved, hear God say to you, “I will be merciful. Your sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more.” https://www.josephprince.org/blog/daily-grace-inspirations/remember-the-cross |

Christianity Etc › Re: Answered: What Does It Mean To Fall From Grace As A Christian? by jiggaz(m): 6:11pm On Mar 24, 2019 |
unstoppable51: From FeedMeJesus.com
“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.” Galatians 5:4
What does it mean to “fall from grace” from the above scripture?
First, I’ve got to warn you. Understanding what Paul was saying in that scripture will free you from religious shackles and cause unending joy like a river to flow out of your innermost being.
If you don’t mind that at all, then sit back and enjoy this piece!
The above scripture like every other verse of the Bible, is best understood in the context of the whole book.
That is, to understand that verse, we need to first understand the whole book of Galatians, paying special attention to the author, audience, tone of writing, message, chapter, previous verses and the ones that followed after. That way we can never be in error.
In this book, we see the apostle Paul using his strongest tone in writing, to address the Galatian church.
These were a people that heard the gospel of God’s unconditional love and grace extended to sinful mankind, believed the message and were saved.
But after some time, some “other gospels” started flying around which were not really the gospel of Jesus.
These “other gospels” or teachings spread so much to the point the whole church was greatly affected. And Paul had to write
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
“which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
“As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Gal.1:6-9
What was it about this “other gospel” that made Paul the apostle to place a curse on whosoever preaches it to the Galatian believers?
The thing is, this “other gospel” was focused on what a man has to do by himself in order to be justified before God rather than focusing on what God by his grace, has done for man.
The preachers of this other gospel infiltrated the church and started telling the people that they need to be circumcised and live according to the Laws of Moses before they can be righteous before God.
The shocking part was that this was a people that had already believed God accepts men by faith based on the sacrifice of His Son Jesus.
But when this new teaching of “honour the sabbath day, don’t eat this, don’t wear this, do this and don’t do this so God will be pleased with you” came, they forgot all they have been taught about God’s grace and salvation and started trying to earn that Salvation by their own works or performance.
Paul had to call them “foolish” and “bewitched” for this.
“O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
“This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by the hearing of faith?
“Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” Galatians 3:1-3
They wanted like today’s believers, to be righteous before God by what they do instead of believing in what Christ has already done for them. Unknowingly to them, they were frustrating the grace of God by that act.
“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Gal.2:21
It was this slipping back to the Law of Moses that Paul called to “fall from grace.”
“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.” Gal.5:4
To fall from grace here does not mean the believer has lost his salvation or is no longer born again.
It simply means that the believer having been saved by grace, has gone back to living by the Law in order to “earn” what he already has.
This is gross error. A total display of ignorance, foolishness and bewitchment. It is like a dog chasing after its own tail.
You are already righteous as believer, you are justified and saved by the faith you have already put in Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross for you.
Quit trying to live by the laws of Moses in order to get what you already have. Salvation is only possible by grace through faith.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
If it was possible to be gotten by man’s effort, then Jesus wouldn’t have died in the first place.
Today like apostle Paul I say, if any man or angel, comes to preach to you another way of becoming righteous or justified before God except by faith in Jesus, let him be accursed.
Galatians 5 verse 1 says, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
Dear believer, stand in this liberty of the grace of God and do not go back to the works of the Law.
You already have all you seek after (righteousness, justification, redemption and much more) given to you. It is all yours. Quit trying to “earn” them.
Glory to God!
You are much loved.
