iPhone users wondering whether their wine or breath have gone bad may soon have help from a chip designed to identify nearby aromas and flavors. Adamant Technologies has created a processor for iPhones that "can take the sense of smell and taste and digitize them," Adamant founder and CEO Sam Khamis tells Business Insider. Khamis says his company's product is fairly sophisticated, employing roughly 2,000 sensors to identify smells compared with the about 400 sensors in the average human nose. The San Francisco startup, which is backed by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, has begun producing chips at a factory in Austin, Texas, and expects to release apps for the chips in a year or two. It also plans to manufacture a device that will plug in to the iPhone and use a variety of apps, including one that will warn users when their breath is not as fresh as they would like. "Halitosis, or bad breath tracking, is something we're really interested in," Khamis said, adding that the app will notifying users of bad breath and indicate what caused the condition. Other planned apps will test blood sugar for diabetics and measure blood-alcohol levels. Giving computers greater sensitivity to their surroundings has attracted more attention lately. IBM unveiled a chip in 2011 designed to mimic the human brain's perception, cognitive, sensation, interaction, and action abilities. IBM envisions its cognitive computing chips could be used for a variety of purposes, such as determining whether supermarket produce had spoiled or detecting http://m.cnet.com/news/new-smartphone-chip-to-help-owners-identify-smells-tastes/57562300 |

Iran has launched a video-sharing site in its latest effort to provide alternative, government-sanctioned Internet services. Dubbed "Mehr," the Farsi word for affection, the site aims to attract Persian-speaking users and promote Iranian culture, according to the About Us page reviewed by the Agence France-Presse. "From now on, people can upload their short films on the Web site and access [IRIB] produced material," said Lotfollah Siahkali, deputy chief of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. The Iranian government has been waging a battle against what it calls "inappropriate" content on the Internet. The government announced in September that it would block access to Google's search engine and Gmail in September, an apparent retaliation for an anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site that caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. At the same time, a government deputy minister announced that the government was moving ahead with much-rumored plans to create a domestic Internet as a way to improve cybersecurity. All government agencies and offices have already been connected to the "national information network," according to a Reuters report at the time that indicated the next step was to connect citizens to the network. The country has reportedly been developing a national intranet in an effort to create a "clean Internet." The Iranian government denied those reports, but the Iranian media say the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013, Reuters reported. Still unclear whether access to the World Wide Web would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out. Iranian Internet users are quite aware of the censorship they face. The country's government cut off access to the Internet a few times earlier this year, the latest of which blocked access to all encrypted international sites outside the country that operate on Secure Sockets Layer protocol. Many Iranians use proxy servers over virtual private networks to circumvent government efforts to block access to foreign news sites and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. http://m.cnet.com/news/iran-launches-own-youtube-like-video-sharing-web-site/57558107 |

John McAfee, the antivirus software pioneer sought by police in connection with a murder in Belize, was arrested yesterday Dec 5th by Guatemalan police for entering the country illegally. McAfee was arrested with the help of Interpol agents at a hotel in an upscale Guatemala City neighborhood, Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla said, according to the Associated Press. Guatemala will seek to have him expelled from the country, Bonilla said, according to Reuters, although there is no international arrest warrant for McAfee, and it was not immediately clear to which country he would be deported. The 67-year-old founder of the company that bears his name recently crossed over into Guatemala to seek asylum from officials in Belize, which have been pursuing him for the past few weeks in connection with the shooting death of his neighbor. McAfee has been on the run since November 12, when his neighbor Gregory Faull, a contractor and restaurant owner, was discovered with a bullet in his head. McAfee and Faull had reportedly had run- ins with each other over McAfee's dogs and armed security guards. In an interview with Wired that same day, McAfee said he thought the killers had actually been looking for him and not Faull. McAfee said yesterday he had hired the former attorney general of Guatamala -- who also happens to be his girlfriend's uncle -- to help him as he tries to set up a meeting with the prime minister of Belize on "neutral ground." In a blog post yesterday, McAfee described his new lawyer, Telesforo Guerra, as "one of the most prominent attorneys in Guatemala," who is "well versed in the intricate system of corruption with the Belizean Government." McAfee's location in Guatemala was revealed Monday when a post from Vice Magazine, which had reporters following McAfee on his trip, included a photo with metadata attached . McAfee has told the media that he's being wrongfully persecuted by officials in Belize and that he fears for his life if he is arrested. "If I survive the 30 days [until the government is required to charge an accused criminal], which I doubt very strongly -- lots of people do die in prison here from strangling on their own vomit, hanging themselves because they're too miserable, or getting beaten to death by fellow inmates or a variety of other things...if I do survive the 30 days, then some judge will go, 'You're guilty. Period.'" The bizarre chain of events include a raid on McAfee's house in May in which police said they found multiple unlicensed firearms and McAfee with a 17-year-old girl. They also said he was manufacturing an antibiotic in his home without a license. About a week after Faull's murder, McAfee began writing a blog that chronicled his efforts to hide from the police. In one post, McAfee writes that he is traveling with a 20-year-old woman named Samantha, whom he credits with helping to keep him fed, clothed, and in hiding. "She has also helped me evade detection by grabbing me and kissing me, in public, in a fashion that causes passerby's to feel embarrassment at the thought of staring and by creating emotional scenes that cause the curious to momentarily forget what they were looking for," he wrote. "She is acutely aware of her surroundings and is as street smart as a sober hobo." http://m.cnet.com/news/john-mcafee-reportedly-arrested-in-guatemala/57557438 |
