The Fulbe Global Development and Rights Initiative (FGDRI) Thursday condemned the continuous stereotype and killing of Fulani’s in the country.

The group alleged that Fulanis were being killed without recourse to humanity.

President General of FGDRI, Salim Musa Umar stated this in a statement made available to journalists in Kaduna, adding that the country cannot survive a Rwandan experience, which is already starting.

FGDRI while reacting to massacres of innocent pastoralists in Bali in Taraba and Birnin Gwari in Kaduna, said these were not isolated incidences, but examples of years of sustained pattern of elimination, annihilation and ethnic cleansing of Fulbe herding communities in various states of the federation.

“It is our conviction that herders are mostly peaceful, self-respecting Nigerians that contribute more than a quarter of the country’s GDP that derive from agriculture, a sector sustained, maintained and financed by the livestock sector, which is largely dependent on the herding communities,” the group said.

The group expressed gratitude for the swift response of security agencies in apprehending four suspects connected with the crime in Taraba State and to the Kaduna State Government for its proactive measures in addressing the issue.

“We are calling on the Federal and State Governments to urgently come to the aid of the victims. This is in view of the fact that their cattle and only source of livelihood were rustled by same marauding criminals.

FGDRI is going to monitor the events as they unfold and would facilitate engagements with the security agencies to ensure justice is served without delay,’ they said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his gladness and that of the entire nation with the military as well as other security agencies on the safe release of the remaining 23 kidnapped train passengers held in captivity by Boko Haram terrorists.

In a reaction to the news of the safe release of the hostages in line with his earlier directives, President Buhari, in a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu, said the nation owed the military and all other security and intelligence agencies a debt of gratitude for the successful operation leading to the release of the hostages, saying these agencies had shown outstanding capabilities over this period that the whole world will not fail to take note of.

“This country’s Armed Forces are as good as any. Given needed support and encouragement as we have been doing, there is no task that they cannot accomplish. I commend them for this remarkable outcome,” the president said.

In expressing satisfaction at the successful deployment of both kinetic and non-kinetic processes leading to the eventual safe release of the remaining hostages, President Buhari also congratulated the families of the victims for having them back alive.

He directed that the relief that comes to the nation arising from the closure of this unfortunate saga must be sustained at all times, all over the federation.

The president also credited his government for resolving the issue and the de-escalation of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping that surged recently, giving assurances that the efforts will be sustained.

On September 28th Governor Godwin Obaseki led administration declared a 24 hour curfew in parts of Benin City, specifically in Irhirhi-Arogba –Obazagbon Ogheghe areas. According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, it was a security exercise.

However, it is not news that areas mentioned are notorious for land grabbing, illegal acquisition and occupation of government land, resulting in communal clashes which have claimed lives and property. It was a renewed campaign against land grabbers.

Ogie, in the statement mentioned, “Government is conducting a security operation in the area, and warns members of the communities to steer clear of Obazagbon to Ogheghe axis of the road, so as not to endanger themselves,” The statement had warned.

Shortly after the 48 hours security operation, buildings in the areas were brought to rubbles, as government bulldozers demolished buildings said to have been illegally erected on the land. Through this exercise, the government re-possessed 1229 hectares of land along these areas for the development of a new town.

But the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) however picked holes in the demolition, accusing the governor of hiding under the guise of building a new town to take over people’s land.

The state chairman of APC, Col David Imuse (rtd), also faulted the state government’s claim that the area has, over the years been acquired by the government and known as Ogba Forest Reserve but still went ahead to issue Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to genuine buyers.

He said the demolition was a resumption of Obaseki’s policy “of demolishing public and private properties of innocent citizens, his perceived enemies and members of the opposition party in the state.

“As a party, we condemn in strong terms these illegal demolitions by the jittery and rudderless PDP-led administration in the state; we see this policy of regularly demolishing public and private properties by the Obaseki-led Edo State government as irrational, evil and undemocratic.”

But Obaseki fired back, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media Projects, describing APC and its leaders in the state as land grabbers, adding that when they held office “they appropriation of community land, with the use of non-state actors and overlords who in the run-up to the 2020 Edo State Governorship election, were popularly known as lions and tigers. It also noted it was one of the major reasons why Governor Obaseki parted ways with the APC, chiefly due to such ideological differences.

“The party, therefore, has no moral authority to speak on the matter. They are afraid because they know they are the main culprits in the illegal enterprise, and are scared that they will be caught in the web as the exercise progresses.

In Afghanistan, there exists this centuries-old heinous practice called “Bacha
Bazi” (Persian for “Boy Play”).
What is it?

Well, it is a custom consisting of systematic sexual abuse of young boys by older men. The boys range from the age of 9 to 18.

These boys are either coerced, kidnapped or purchased, and are forced into “sexual entertainment”. They’re made to dress like women and dance in a sensual manner in the gathering of older men. Child prostitution and sexual slavery also forms a part of it. The men making these boys do these things are often powerful, and could be warlords, police officials, politicians, tribal leaders, or other influential men. Often, these men consider owning “dancing boys” as a symbol of high social status.

These boys live a life of misery, suffering rape, abuse, and other kinds of exploitation. If they try to escape, they’re beaten or even murdered. Those who succeed in escaping, they’re shunned by their families and the society, and end up becoming beggars, drug addicts, or criminals, while also enduring the consequences of their abuse. Those who don’t escape, continue to suffer.

When these boys become too old for this vile custom, many of them, to earn their livelihood, then get into the business of child trafficking, as in bringing young boys to the pedophiles engaging in Bacha Bazi.

When Taliban came to power in the 90s, they outlawed this practice, but it was hardly enforced. Sometimes, even the victim boys were punished instead of the actual perpetrators. After the ouster of the Taliban 2001, Bachcha Bazi increased exponentially, with the authorities and security forces often being either direct perpetrators or complicit in the exploitation of children.

During the presence of US troops in Afghanistan, many American soldiers were disgusted upon seeing these young boys being exploited like this. However, as per a report by NY Times, their higher ups instructed them to not interfere, as doing so might mean that their Afghan allies that were fighting besides them against the Taliban, may turn hostile. [2] Some soldiers did act though, for example when an Afghan police officer raped a 12-year old boy, he got severely beaten up by two US special forces soldiers. The soldiers were initially separated from their unit involuntarily, but were later reinstated.

In the last decade, the Afghan government made several promises of investigating and severely punishing child sexual abusers in the military. However, despite their promises, the cases kept on rising. And now that Taliban is back in power, there’s obviously no way that any government from the outside can pressure them to act on it.

As of today, Bacha Bazi still remains a widespread practice in Afghanistan, with more and more young boys falling prey to powerful pedophiles, having their lives ruined forever. It is shameful that this “cultural practice”, which is not only disturbing but downright evil, finds its place in the 21st century.
