Three Teens Develop Salt-Powered Refrigerator for Hospitals Without Electricity In a remarkable breakthrough, three teenagers from Indore, India — Dhruv Chaudhary, Mithran Ladhania, and Mridul Jain — have created a salt-powered mini refrigerator that operates without electricity. Named Thermavault, their invention aims to help deliver vaccines, medical supplies, and even transplant organs to rural regions lacking reliable power. Their innovation recently earned them the 2025 Earth Prize along with a $12,500 award, which they plan to invest in building 200 units for testing across 120 hospitals. How the Thermavault Works The Thermavault leverages a chemical process where specific salts, when dissolved in water, absorb heat from their surroundings, thereby creating a cooling effect. Initially, the trio explored around 150 different salts found online, narrowing their list down to 20 candidates. Despite extensive lab tests at the Indian Institutes of Technology, none met their cooling needs until a teacher recommended they revisit two salts from their science textbooks: barium hydroxide octahydrate and ammonium chloride. The results were promising. Ammonium chloride maintained a temperature range of 2–6 degrees Celsius (35–43 degrees Fahrenheit), suitable for many vaccines. When combined with barium hydroxide octahydrate, the solution could achieve subzero temperatures, crucial for preserving specific vaccines and organs. Design and Usability The refrigerator features an insulated plastic container lined internally with copper. Vaccines or organs are placed against the copper lining, while the saltwater solution is contained in a compartment between the copper and outer plastic walls. Unlike traditional cold boxes relying on frozen ice packs, the Thermavault can be refreshed by simply boiling off the water and reusing the collected salt — no freezer required. According to Dr. Pritesh Vyas, an orthopedic surgeon who trialed the device at V One Hospital in Indore, the Thermavault successfully preserved vaccines for up to 12 hours. He noted that incorporating a built-in temperature monitor would further enhance its practicality for remote medical use. Looking Ahead The team plans to use part of their prize money to seek a Performance, Quality, and Safety certification from the World Health Organization. With this certification, they hope to collaborate with Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, to scale their invention. Additionally, The Earth Prize organization has offered volunteer support to help the teens secure a patent for Thermavault. While they have already won the regional prize for Asia, a global winner will be determined through a public vote closing on April 22. This salt-powered innovation has the potential to revolutionize vaccine delivery in rural areas, providing a sustainable, reusable solution for communities where electricity remains scarce. https://blog.iyebi.com/three-teens-develop-salt-powered-refrigerator-for-hospitals-without-electricity/

This forecast was contained in the Bank’s Africa’s Pulse report, released during the ongoing Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, DC. The report presents a bleak outlook for poverty reduction in Nigeria, warning that despite modest gains in economic activity—particularly in the non-oil sector in late 2024—structural challenges such as overreliance on natural resources and national fragility are likely to stall progress. The World Bank has projected a rise in poverty levels in Nigeria, estimating an increase of 3.6 percentage points by 2027. According to the World Bank, Nigeria and other resource-dependent, fragile countries in Sub-Saharan Africa will see poverty worsen, unlike non-resource-rich nations which are projected to achieve faster poverty reduction. “Poverty in resource-rich, fragile countries—including large economies like Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo—is projected to increase by 3.6 percentage points between 2022 and 2027,” the report stated. The Bank noted that Sub-Saharan Africa continues to bear the highest global rate of extreme poverty. In 2024, 80% of the world’s 695 million extreme poor lived in the region, with half of the 560 million located in just four countries. By contrast, South Asia accounted for 8% of the world’s extreme poor, East Asia and the Pacific 2%, the Middle East and North Africa 5%, and Latin America and the Caribbean 3%. The report attributes the slow pace of poverty reduction in resource-rich countries to falling oil prices and weak fiscal structures. In contrast, non-resource-rich nations are leveraging high agricultural commodity prices to drive stronger growth, despite existing fiscal challenges. In response to these challenges, the World Bank urged Nigeria and similar economies to strengthen fiscal management and build a more effective fiscal contract with citizens saying such reforms are vital for promoting inclusive economic development and achieving sustainable poverty reduction. https://blog.iyebi.com/the-world-bank-has-projected-a-rise-in-poverty-levels-in-nigeria-by-2027/
