EFCC Detains Two in Ongoing N1.3 Trillion CBEX Cryptocurrency Scam Probe The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken two individuals into custody in connection with the suspected N1.3 trillion fraud involving the cryptocurrency platform, Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX). While four Nigerians, including a pair of siblings, have been linked to the company, the EFCC has yet to disclose their identities. A British national is also reportedly under investigation, although details of his role remain unclear at this time. Investigators from the EFCC worked through the public holiday on Friday to make progress on the high-profile case. A reliable insider confirmed the arrest of two suspects, noting that preliminary interrogations have commenced. The investigation seeks to uncover how CBEX penetrated Nigeria’s digital asset trading ecosystem. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who returned to the country last Thursday, is personally overseeing the ongoing probe. Authorities say they are closely monitoring five individuals, including the British suspect, but are taking careful steps to avoid any misidentification or legal missteps. The source said: “We are still in the early stages of the investigation. While the suspects are cooperating, we are piecing together how CBEX was formed, who funded it, the secondary entities involved, and the role played by institutions like the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).” When asked why the identities of the two arrested suspects remain undisclosed, the official explained that releasing names too early could compromise the integrity of the investigation. Meanwhile, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, explained why no regulatory action had been taken against CBEX earlier. Speaking on Monday, he stated that CBEX was never registered with the commission, making regulatory oversight difficult until now. Dr. Agama emphasized the importance of investor education, revealing that the SEC has recently stepped up its outreach through nationwide awareness events and a new podcast series launched two months ago. “Nigerians should always verify investment opportunities before committing their money. Consult a financial advisor, lawyer, or registered broker,” he advised. He also cautioned online content creators and influencers against promoting unverified investment schemes, referencing the new Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, which imposes a fine of N20 million and up to 10 years in prison for such offenses. “If you’re a blogger or influencer and you knowingly promote fraudulent platforms, the consequences are serious under the new law,” he warned. https://blog.iyebi.com/efcc-arrests-two-suspects-over-n1-3tr-cbex-scam/
