Politics / Osun PDP Candidate Adeleke Didn’t Graduate From U.S. Varsity, As Claimed by joelfm(m): 10:15pm On Jul 27, 2018
ADEMOLA Nurudeen Adeleke, senator representing Osun West Senatorial District and the state’s PDP gubernatorial candidate, did not graduate from Jacksonville State University (JSU), says the authorities of the public university located in Alabama, United States.

According to his profile on the National Assembly website, Adeleke has a Diploma in Criminology from JSU and graduated in 1986. He also graduated from Ede Muslim Grammar School, Osun State, where he obtained an Ordinary Level Certificate.

His academic claims have, however, been brutally challenged. According to recently circulated claims, Adeleke registered for GCE O’ Level in 1981 but had F9 in English Language and was recorded absent for other subjects. It also said he has no degree from JSU where he registered as Jackson Ademola Adeleke, while providing what it titled as official records of his enrollment.

Dele Adeleke, Ademola Adeleke’s junior brother, has denied the allegations and encouraged those who disagree to verify the senator’s result at his alma mater. “Do you think the APC would not have raised the issues if he did not have the authentic certificates?” he had asked.

The ICIR can, however, confirm that Adeleke did not graduate from Jacksonville State University, though he has claimed otherwise.

Buffy Lockette, the Director of Public Relations at the university, in response to a mailed enquiry, told The ICIR that though the senator enrolled at the tertiary institution, he was not awarded any degree.

“Your request was forwarded to me,” started Lockette. “According to our records, he attended JSU but did not graduate. I cannot provide any additional information. Perhaps you can learn more at http://www.studentclearinghouse.org.

PROBLEMATIC WAEC RESULT

When The ICIR checked the West African Examination Council’s website to view Adeleke’s O’ level result using examination number 19645/149 as circulated, the site replied, “result not available for this candidate in the specified year and exams diet”.

The Council’s online result verification portal, which claims to contain data from 1980 to 2018, was also consulted with the same details. The result was brief: “candidate does not exist”.

Demianus Ojijeogu, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, told The ICIR all candidates’ results are in the custody of the Council and should be accessible on the website, regardless of performance in the examination.

“Even if the candidate has F9 throughout or is absent throughout, it is accessible,” he said. He, however, added that the Council is still working on results of candidates who wrote in 1981 and the surrounding years.

“You know there is this change of nomenclature in our examination. We used to have SSCE then WASC, and now WASSCE. So, we are trying to update the website; maybe they took some down.” He promised to confirm and provide feedback on why the results are not presently online.
CHALLENGED IN COURT

Meanwhile, two members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu, have as a result of the controversy applied to the Osun State High Court for an order setting aside Adeleke’s election as the party’s flag bearer in the September gubernatorial election.

Olabayo, in his affidavit, said the senator truly attended Ede Muslim Grammar School “but did not leave with a School Leaving Certificate having absented himself from the school leaving examinations but for English where he scored a failing mark of F9”.

One of the exhibits provided to the court and obtained by The ICIR is Adeleke’s senior secondary school examination statement of result recently collected from Ede Muslim High School. It shows that the candidate had an F9 in English Language, while grades for Literature in English, Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Islamic Religious Studies, Christian Religious Studies and Geography, were said to be pending.
Ademola Adeleke’s statement of result as presented to Osun High Court

Ruling on the plaintiffs’ ex-parte application on Thursday, the court gave Adeleke six days, that is till August 1, 2018, to provide his certificate.

“It will be inequitable not to allow the respondent to come and show his certificate if he has any but if given the opportunity to present side of the case, the balance which is necessary for interlocutory injunction would be adequately considered,” noted Justice David Oladimeji.
FROM GRASS TO GRACE

Though a newcomer to Nigeria’s elective politics, the 58-year-old senator appears to be flying from triumph to triumph. He was largely unknown politically prior to the demise of Isiaka Adeleke, his older brother, who passed away on April 23, 2017.

Following a bye-election held to fill the vacuum left by Isiaka in the Nigerian senate, he was declared to have had a landslide victory, winning in nine out of 10 local governments. He admitted this was due to his brother’s “historical goodwill” and influence.

According to him: “I was having fun during the campaign and enjoying my dance because my brother had done 70 percent of the job with his historical goodwill right from when he became an executive governor in 1991. I was always with him. I want to follow his footsteps and may God help me.”

On Saturday, Adeleke found himself a step closer to his political ambition as he was declared PDP’s gubernatorial flag bearer in Osun State, after he narrowly defeated Akin Ogunbiyi with a seven-vote difference.

Though what he notes as his target achievement is “to sponsor Bills that would be impactful on my people, especially youths and women”, the senator has in fact not notably sponsored any bills since his election into the red chambers.

On the contrary, he has become notorious for his vigorous, entertaining dance moves and his fondness for flaunting these in public ― a trend that has earned him the name, “the dancing senator”.

Politics / Why Jonathan Government Didn’t Save Despite Oil Boom – Okonjo-iweala by joelfm(m): 5:21pm On Jul 19, 2018
A former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has linked the failure of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to save for the rainy day, despite oil boom, to the insistence of state governors that funds in the Excess Crude Account must be shared.

According to Okonjo-Iweala, as finance minister, with the backing of Jonathan and ex-Vice-President Namadi Sambo, she had a running battle with state governors, who insiste that crude oil was selling at $86 per barrel.http://punchng.com/why-jonathan-government-didnt-save-despite-oil-boom-okonjo-iweala/

Politics / PDP To Boycott 2019 Polls If… – Secondus by joelfm(m): 5:13pm On Jul 19, 2018
he leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to pull out of the 2019 general elections if the electoral umpire and security agencies fail to demonstrate sufficient level of impartiality expected from them by Nigerians. Uche Secondus National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus stated this at the party’s national secretariat on Thursday while playing host to a combined delegation of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI). Secondus who lamented what he called the manipulation of vote figures by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the recently concluded Ekiti governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also accused the Nigerian Police of chasing away PDP agents from various polling centres particularly areas known to be its strongholds

“We are still contemplating on whether we will participate in the 2019 elections or not. We are yet to take a decision on this. “We are not sure that the security agencies and INEC would be impartial and transparent. In the Ekiti elections, there were instances our party agents’ tags were removed and given to the APC agents. “There were clear cases of manipulation, ballot snatching and harassment of our party agents,” Secondus said.

Politics / Collapsed Mokwa-jebba Bridge Temporarily Fixed by joelfm(m): 5:57pm On Jun 11, 2018
Vehicular traffic on the Mokwa-Jebba road has eased following the temporary fixing of the Mowo bridge after it collapsed on Saturday night.

The temporary solution on the collapsed bridge occurs less than 24 hours after the works minister, Babatunde Fashola, pledged to ensure a palliative is put in place for motorists plying the route.

The Federal Road Safety Corp had alerted motorists of the heavy traffic on the road after the Mowo bridge collapsed.

The Mokwa-Jebba road, which links Niger and Kwara states, is a major transit route between Abuja and the western part of the country.

The Mowo Bridge is located after Mowo Junction, 18km from Mokwa town in Niger State. The bridge is also located about one km from Tatabu Bridge, which collapsed in 2017 and was promptly fixed by the Nigerian government.

Vehicular traffic had been affected on both sides of the road, and there was no thoroughfare up till Sunday.

Bisi Kareem, the FRSC spokesperson, had advised motorists to, in the interim, ply the Lokoja road as an alternative “if going to Lagos and Abuja.’’

But when PREMIUM TIMES visited the location of the bridge Monday afternoon, there was free flow of vehicular traffic.

Our correspondent reports that the dilapidated part had been filled with granite and sand, making it easy to ply for motorists.

Umar Umaru, a motorist said the authorities had done “a temporary but quick construction” work on the bridge.

PREMIUM TIMES also observed that there were scores of FRSC officials around the bridge coordinating vehicular movement.

Some motorists who spoke to our correspondent commended the government for its quick intervention.

It is, however, unclear whether further construction works would be done on the bridge.

Efforts to speak to the FRSC officials on duty proved abortive as they declined to speak officially on the state of the road.

Politics / Abiola’s Family Writes Buhari Over GCFR Award, June 12 by joelfm(m): 7:55pm On Jun 07, 2018
The Abiola family has written to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for awarding the nation’s highest honour to their patriarch, MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 June 12 presidential election.

Mr Buhari announced the award on Wednesday and also declared June 12 as democracy day starting from 2019, shifting the date from May 29.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. Mr Buhari also honoured late activist, Gani Fawehinmi, and Mr Abiola’s vice presidential candidate, Babagana Kingibe.

In a letter to the president, dated June 6, 2018, Mr Abiola’s son, Kola, said he was appreciating the decision on behalf of the family.

“Your Excellency, as I wrote in my letter to you on June 12, 2016, in our minds, the award was the only befitting recognition of the importance of Chief Abiola’s fight for democracy for Nigeria which culminated in 4 years incarceration/solitary confinement and decimation of his business and financial interests, before the ultimate sacrifice, being his life on July 7, 1998 at the age of 60,” he wrote.

“Your Excellency, your decision to also designate June 12 as Democracy Day rights the wrongs done to all the nation-builders and heroes that produced that produced the democratic credentials on which the Nigerian polity now thrives. We are profoundly grateful to the people from all corners of Nigeria that worked tirelessly to ensure the most free and fair elections in our nation’s history in 1993, fought valiantly for the Hope ’93 mandate given to Bashorun Abiola by the Nigerian people and died trying to protect the mandate.”

“Mr President, I thank you earnestly for heeding our plea where others before you did not, whilst conveying the assurances of my highest esteem.”

Politics / Buhari Directs Gazetting Of Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi Awards by joelfm(m): 7:46pm On Jun 07, 2018
Following his declaration on Wednesday that henceforth June 12 be observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria and that some heroes of democracy be given national honours, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to take immediate steps to publish the presidential order in the Federal Gazette.

A statement signed by Mr Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Thursday said the gazette should reflect late MKO Abiola as a recipient of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (Posthumous) while Baba Gana Kingibe will be Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.

The statement also said late human rights activist and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, is awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (Posthumous)

“The President also directed that this should be done so that the awards slated for June 12, 2018 can go on as planned,” the statement said.

Politics / Buhari Signs NDDC Act Into Law by joelfm(m): 4:13pm On Jan 01, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Amendment Act, 2017.

The Act includes the gas producing and gas processing companies in the list of agencies that are contributing to the Niger Delta Development Commission in addition to the Oil companies in a bid to increase funding of the Commission for effective discharge of its duties.

Previously, the NDDC Acts excluded the gas companies. The Act makes it explicit that the Gas companies have to be included. This is to diversify the sources of funding for the NDDC for the economic wellbeing of the region.

E.g. vs. I.e.–What’s the Difference?

GRAMMARLY · Writing
I.e. and e.g. are both Latin abbreviations. E.g. stands for exempli gratia and means “for example.” I.e. is the abbreviation for id est and means “in other words.” Remember that E is for example (e.g.) and that I and E are the first letters of in essence, an alternative English translation of i.e.

But why bother with all this Latin? Don’t we have enough abbreviations in English?

Think about it. How would you feel if you got a text message that ended in SWAK? Many of the parents who took a quiz on texting acronyms weren’t sure what it meant. While some teenagers may laugh a little at the older generation’s inability to master texting lingo, the truth is that many of them would be hard-pressed to explain the difference between i.e. and e.g. Now you know the basics, but let’s get into the nitty-gritty of what everyone from student to professional writer needs to know about these meaningful letters.

E.g. vs . I.e. Difference

What Does E.g. Mean?

Once again, e.g. is short for exempli gratia, a Latin phrase that means “for the sake of example.” As you may guess, you use it to introduce one or more examples. Don’t worry about listing every possibility; e.g. is used to introduce a few examples, not a complete list.

And now for some examples of e.g.:

Should that happen to poor, as-yet unaffected places (e.g., most of South Asia and Africa) the suffering can be great. —“WHO rejects calls to move Olympics over Zika fears”

There’s a common view that Malcolm Turnbull’s ‘30-minute city’ is yet another slight variation on the many terms we already have for a more sustainable urban form e.g. compact city, walkable city, smart growth, new urbanism, urban consolidation. —“Is Turnbull’s ’30-minute city’ a serious election issue?”

What Does I.e. Mean?

What about i.e.? A lot of people confuse this expression with e.g., but this one does not have to do with listing examples. I.e.’s Latin origin is the phrase id est, which translates to English as “that is to say” or “in other words.” Here’s a trick to remember this: associate the I of i.e. with the I of “in other words.” Alternately, imagine that the I and E stand for “in essence.”

And now, let’s take a look at i.e. in action:

[What privilege] would allow them to refuse to answer investigators’ questions? Only one: the Fifth Amendment privilege—i.e., the refusal to answer on the grounds that truthful responses might be incriminating. — “How to Read the IG Report”

Besides math and crossword puzzles, I am passionate about self-supported bicycle touring, i.e., traveling hundreds and thousands of miles on a bike with all my camping gear and other supplies. —The New York Times

How to Use E.g. and I.e. in Writing

E.g. and i.e. are both lowercase when they show up in the middle of a sentence (i.e., like this). Most American style guides recommend a period after both letters in both abbreviations.

In general, you add a comma after e.g. and between each subsequent example if there is more than one item in your list. If you want your examples or your narrowing-down set apart from the rest of the sentence, you can enclose e.g. and i.e., along with the examples associated with them, in parentheses.

Even though exempli gratia and id est are both Latin (and therefore italicized), no need to put e.g. or i.e. in italics when they’re in abbreviated form. Abbrevs are all about keeping things quick and easy, after all.

Let’s recap.

E.g. is used to give one or more possible examples. It’s a signal that you’re seeing one or a few of multiple possibilities.

I.e, on the other hand, clarifies; you are providing more precise information. Where e.g. opens up more options, i.e. narrows them down.

Compare these two examples:

After work, I’ll walk over to that new sports arena, i.e., Thunderdome.
After work, I’ll walk over to a sports arena, e.g., Thunderdome or Victory Court.
In the first example, you are clarifying that Thunderdome is the exact arena that you will visit. In the second example, you will visit Thunderdome, Victory Court, or any other sports arena.

Now you have a response if a teen teases you about your lack of texting expertise. You can ask her to tell you the words behind some abbreviations that you understand (e.g., id est). FYI (i.e., for your information), SWAK means “sealed with a kiss.”
