PoliticsRe: What Do You Think About A Ceremonial Constitutional Monarchy In Nigeria? by johnanO(op): 6:23pm On May 12, 2023
Mrfeel:
Trash trash , this post is irritating . where will the ceremonial monarch come from? Hausa-fulani yoruba or igbo?

If a centralized federal government system in Nigeria can not unite Nigeria , only a fool will think a ceremonial monarch can unite Nigeria ,.
I will use the UNITED Kingdom as an example of a country which consists of four nations namely England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

They all have different languages (Welsh in Wales. Gaelic and Scots in Scotland etc.) and different national identities.

They have an apolitical constitutional and ceremonial monarchy which reigns over these four nations of the United Kingdom.

To answer your question - all monarchs in Nigeria would come together to elect the ceremonial monarch (similar to a conclave)

Forget about present day squabbles and try to imagine what Nigeria would and should be like in 200, 500, 1000 years from now, if it exists then, and you may have a different view on this.

Lastly, we were colonized by the British and we called it a disaster and regrettable.

The true disaster is that we have failed to colonize ourselves.

PROUDIGBO:
We are yet to figure out the presidential system we’re currently operating and you’re already suggesting another one! Who will be the ‘ceremonial monarch’….how will he/she be chosen!? Or will they start fighting over that one as well!? It can only work in a devolved regional system of gov’t!
Presidential systems are not necessarily the best form of government.

I would argue that they represent a poor combination of the duties of a Monarch and prime minister.

Furthermore, the idea in this case is that a prime minister is in charge of government while a monarch (or a president, or a premiere) is head of state.

The important factor being that decisions are taken in someone's name.

My personal preference for this is a Monarch.

I pray that I can witness a shift in mentalities towards monarchy (or at least separation of executive powers) and the goodness that it brings to its people before I depart this earth, hopefully even better than I have experienced in foreign land.

What Do You Think About A Ceremonial Constitutional Monarchy In Nigeria?

Title: The Ceremonial Monarch: Symbolizing Unity, Stability, and Tradition

Introduction:
In a world where multiple monarchs hold power, the inclusion of a single ceremonial monarch within a constitutional monarchy framework can bring numerous advantages. By embracing a ceremonial role, this monarch can symbolize unity, provide stability, and preserve valuable traditions. This compelling case presents the benefits of a single monarch playing a ceremonial role within a system of multiple monarchs.

Symbol of Unity:
A ceremonial monarch acts as a unifying figure, transcending regional divisions and fostering a sense of national identity. While multiple monarchs may represent different regions or constituent parts, the ceremonial monarch embodies the collective unity of the nation. Their presence represents the shared heritage and values that bind the people together, strengthening the sense of belonging and pride in the nation.

Stability and Continuity:
In a system with multiple monarchs, a ceremonial monarch provides stability and continuity. While the other monarchs may engage in active governance, the ceremonial monarch remains a consistent and enduring symbol of the nation's history and traditions. This continuity brings a sense of reassurance and permanence, as the ceremonial monarch upholds and preserves the rich cultural and historical heritage that defines the nation.

Non-partisan and Unifying Influence:
As a non-partisan figurehead, the ceremonial monarch stands above politics and acts as a unifying influence. They represent the entire nation, regardless of political affiliations, and can transcend the divisions that often arise in a multi-monarch system. Their presence serves as a reminder of shared values, fostering dialogue, and reconciliation among different factions within society.

Preservation of Traditions:
A ceremonial monarch plays a vital role in preserving and celebrating cultural and national traditions. They can participate in ceremonial events, festivals, and public celebrations, lending authenticity and historical significance to these occasions. By upholding and honoring traditions, the ceremonial monarch helps strengthen the national identity and promotes a sense of pride and continuity with the past.

International Representation and Diplomacy:
A ceremonial monarch serves as an embodiment of the nation's sovereignty and heritage on the global stage. They can represent the country at state visits, diplomatic events, and international forums. Their presence lends credibility, respect, and recognition to the nation's diplomacy efforts, bolstering its international reputation and fostering positive relationships with other countries.

Let Africa fix it's health system to the developed countries' standard
I strongly disagree.

Africa should fix its health system to a standard which is acceptable to Africans. This implies that African healthcare could, in fact, be better than that in advanced developing countries.

P.S. We shouldn’t always take actions or reason in relation to advanced developing countries.

If you try to imitate them too closely, you will always be behind—by definition—and that is exactly where they want you to be.

This is just a summary of the irony of what Nigeria has became today as a nation especially in security & health wherein our rulers have so much failed that Nigeria has now become a tragicomic joke.
The word 'rulers' in your comment reveals the problem. Unfortunately, you may be part of the problem if you think we need rulers.

We need representatives not rulers. Rulers give you grief.

Nigeria is not a joke. It's a country facing historical difficulties which it shall overcome. Sooner or later we will be fine because we have no other option.
PoliticsRe: Falana Reacts As DSS Rearrests Omoyele Sowore by johnanO: 10:10pm On Dec 06, 2019
Nation of excuse makers. I'm sure nobody is interested in how they managed to get in, just some stupid comments about Buhari who is not even there.

All those police officers standing idly by should be tried for dereliction of duty.

This is not over.
PoliticsRe: World Bank To FG: Reform Now To Stop Further Slide Into Extreme Poverty by johnanO: 8:48am On Dec 03, 2019
I see from this thread that there is general mistrust for the world bank and IMF.

I see from my years within and outside Nigeria that there is a greater mistrust for other Nigerians than foreign institutions.

The important question is this - is their advice wrong or right, or is poverty now the norm? Do we enjoy loving in poverty?

I would simply say this. Firstly, listen to their advice and reform because this is the only way to avoid further catastrophe.

Secondly, Nigeria is staying put and poor without reforms to every sector of government and public life which can only be achieved by having constitutional reform. (Not talking about secession)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Nigerians seem to be allergic to reform and those who are able to enact reform act like it's an antisocial exercise.

How else are you going to evolve and adapt as a body if you don't introspect and make necessary changes over time in a changing world.

Public Service Announcement,!!

If you are ever thinking or dreaming of standing up for the ordinary Nigerian people. If you love yourself, DON'T.

Go through this thread and see the various reasons why you shouldn't.
Yes. Scary thought!

It is worth pointing out that the Executive arm of government (including the DSS) is way too powerful. They have the audacity to disobey the courts. That simply means we don't have a judiciary and therefore, we are in trouble, of sorts.

There is no such thing as an isolated incident in politics or government. This is a habit.

We need reforms to the structure of government and I'm not taking about secession.

jaytee01:
And you believe that you are making sense?
I believe what he/she is trying to say is that Sowore is fundamentally not different from Buhari if they both operate under the same framework i.e. present day Nigerian mindset.

My opinion: The law is the law. There is no excuse not to obey court orders. The DSS officers, only, who are preventing his release from the detention center are in contempt. As such, the full force and weight of the law should be brought against them even if it means Police VS DSS action movie.

This is the sensible way to resolve this issue.

P.S. Sowore is a danger to the peace but the DSS needs to understand that you can't break the law to enforce the law. It defeats the purpose.

I don't see what part Buhari plays in this.
PoliticsIs Sensationalism And Subjectivism Blinding Politics In Nigeria. by johnanO(op): 2:28pm On Oct 02, 2019
It seems that people are not interested in any political idea which does not align with their existing thoughts or ideas.

It seems there is so much pride that it is toxic and destructive.

So, is sensationalism and subjectivism blinding politics in Nigeria?
PoliticsIndependence - Did Nigeria's Self-destruction Start At Self-government? by johnanO(op): 2:12pm On Oct 02, 2019
What are ways forward for Nigeria?

It seems to me that our self-destruction began at the instance of self-government and things could get even worse than they are.

Your ideas and opinions (except for secession).

PoliticsRe: Sowore Still In DSS Custody, Agency Set to Arraign Him Again Next Week by johnanO: 8:59am On Sep 28, 2019
This is sad.

As outlined in my post reply on NL, the director general MAY not be in contempt of court.

Contempt in this case would apply to any individual within the boundaries of Nigeria who obstructs bailiffs in the lawful execution of their duties.

So, technically, they have the power to break down the doors of the DSS center and release Sowore and also to arrest anyone who obstructs them while executing their lawful commands by the court.

Anything less than this would be incompetence on the part of the court because they have the power to do their jobs properly and sometimes just do not, assumedly for political reasons.

PoliticsRe: Contempt Of Court: Why Sowore Is Wrong But The Court Is Right by johnanO(op): 8:45am On Sep 28, 2019
I must add, however, that it is not necessarily the director general who ought to be arrested but anyone who obstructs the bailiffs in the lawful execution of their duties.

When police start to arrest police, you know that Nigeria is getting better.
PoliticsContempt Of Court: Why Sowore Is Wrong But The Court Is Right by johnanO(op): 9:38pm On Sep 27, 2019
One can only assume that the word "revolution" is the number one fear of any government. However, it ought not to be.

A sane, self-confident and judicious society should view the word revolution as a call for reform and an OPPORTUNITY to do so.

I have come to believe that in Africa, especially West Africa, reform is viewed as a sort of taboo.

A society without reform is like a tree which does not shed leaves in winter. It withers and dies.

The point, therefore, is that protest should be viewed as an OPPORTUNITY to improve.

In my opinion, the courts should stand firm and command bailiffs to effect required arrest of individuals in contempt of court.

This is the right thing to do to a director general or anyone else in contempt within the recognized boundaries of Nigeria.

Anything else would be incompetence on the part of the judiciary.

Now, to Sowore. I think he makes a lot of noise but is more of the same or even worse. He is a dangerous man but may not even realize it.

Would you rather have a country where you are in "relative" peace or one which is like Syria and the likes.

Let's make progress, but NOT with Sowore. He should be released but watched closely as he could do a lot of harm all in the name of becoming president.
