#RevolutionNow: Mass Action Against President Buhari’s Government Scheduled For Wednesday Across Nigeria As Citizens Demand End To Rights Abuses, Killings, Corruption

Apart from rising cases of killings by bandits and other armed groups across different parts of the country, unemployment rate neared alarming levels over the last one year especially with many companies and businesses closing shop in Nigeria as a result of a harsh economic climate.

Nigerians across different parts of the country will again on Wednesday take to the streets to demand better governance from the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

One year after the people took the same route in a peaceful protest tagged #RevolutionNow on August 5, 2019 to demand a better society from the same administration, nothing significant has changed – instead the people have had their rights grossly violated by a regime whose draconian and unfriendly policies continue to plunge millions of individuals and households deeper into poverty.

Convener of the protest movement, Omoyele Sowore, a human rights crusader known globally for speaking truth to power, was arrested on August 3, 2019 by Nigeria’s ruthless and lawless Department of State Services and was kept in jail from that period until December 24 when an international outrage forced Buhari’s government to release him after initially flouting two court orders sanctioning his freedom on bail.

Unable to prove its case of alleged treason against the activist, Buhari’s government has confined him to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, through one of the most insane bail conditions that also forbids him from speaking to the press in a bid to silence and keep him out of circulation.
But undeterred by government’s desperation to shrink the civic space and extinguish voices of dissent, Nigerians will on Wednesday again abandon fear to pour out to the streets in a bid to challenge a regime that has made life difficult and almost unbearable for them.

Apart from rising cases of killings by bandits and other armed groups across different parts of the country, unemployment rate neared alarming levels over the last one year especially with many companies and businesses closing shop in Nigeria as a result of a harsh economic climate.

Bothered by these anomalies, the Nigerian people have vowed to embark on a mass action to put the government in check.

The Coalition for Revolution while describing August 5 as a national day of action, in a statement said, “The situation in the country for poor people keeps getting worse. While poverty continues to increase for the many, the rate of stealing of monies that could be used to improve lives and livelihoods keeps accelerating, on a daily basis. Repression follows in tow, to stop questions being asked. And those who actually work, waged workers are underpaid and overworked.

“The masses are fed up. This is the time to rise up and fight to break our chains. On 5 August, 2020, Coalition for Revolution will organise a national day of action in commemoration and continuation of its #RevolutionNow campaign.

“Enough is enough. We cannot let this situation continue. We cannot allow a few persons to throw the 99 per cent of the population of the cliff into the abyss of starvation and destruction. We will fight until victory, starting with the national day of action on 5 August.”

Expressing his thoughts on the subject matter, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, said, “In President Buhari's hometown in Katsina, bandits have taken over. We all thought that in the first year of his government, activities of Boko Haram would have been a thing of the past. It is unfortunate to say this government has lost it, and he (Buhari) has not performed up to the expectation of Nigerians in terms of protecting lives and property.”

Other Nigerians also took to popular social networking platform, Twitter, to demand an end to poor governance, corruption and senseless killings in the country using the #RevolutionNow.

A Twitter user named Tunde Abass while sharing pictures of failed roads in the country, said, “If you're dissatisfied...with countless souls that have lost their lives through accidents, due to bad roads across the length and breadth of the country. Come out and join the RevolutionNow protest #August5thProtest #RevolutionNow.”

Another Twitter user, Ifeanyi Buche, wrote, “The #RevolutionNow that we need is one that will grow our economy, build our infrastructures, stamp out favouritism, tribalism, worship of religious leaders and make our laws and constitution to work. That's the revolution of my dream.”

Damiloju, another user of the social networking platform, said, “Not claiming one tried would do it better. There are Igbos in the Senate and as ministers what have been their impact on Nigerians.

“They play the religion and tribe card and we fall for it. Instead of fighting them, we begin to fight ourselves. #RevolutionNow #August5thProtest.”

Josh King wrote while adding his voice to the issue, said, “We must take action. #RevolutionNow #OccupyNaija, demand restructuring, demand electoral reforms. If we don't do these and find a way to keep our dissatisfaction heard, we would further slip away.”

A Twitter known as Prince Lahbash, wrote, “I fear for this country because every event taking place is heading us to total anarchy and destruction.

“I pray it does not happen. Imagine these old fools who cannot allow youths to be at the helm of affairs. #August5thProtest #RevolutionNow.”

PoliticsSenator Abbo Wins Assault Case Despite Video Evidence by Johndot(op): 12:34pm On Aug 01, 2020
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

Adamawa North lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, has won the case of assault instituted against him before a Magistrate Court in Zuba, Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force.

This is despite a viral video showing Abbo assaulting a woman, Osimibibra Warmate; and a televised press conference in which the lawmaker apologised to the victim.

According to a copy of the judgment obtained by The PUNCH, the Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, who upheld a no-case submission filed by Abbo, said the police failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the lawmaker assaulted Warmate on May 11, 2019.

The case with suit number CR/010/2019 spanned from July 8, 2019 to June 18, 2020.

The two witnesses that testified against Abbo were Warmate – who was the nominal complainant – and a police officer, ASP Mary Daniel, who investigated the matter.

In his ruling, the magistrate said, “The evidence and exhibits tendered do not disclose a prima facie case of the alleged crime of criminal force and assault against the defendant (Abbo). The prosecution’s case centred on the oral evidence of PW1 (Warmate) and the two discs contained a CCTV footage of the incident and alleged video clip of an apology from the defendant (Abbo).”

PoliticsInsecurity: Nigerians Know We Have Done Our Best – Buhari by Johndot(op): 6:42pm On Jul 31, 2020
Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday said his regime had done its best as far as fighting members of the Boko Haram sect in the North East and militants in the South-South was concerned.

Buhari spoke in an interview he granted State House correspondents after joining his family members and some top government officials to observe the Eid El-Kabir prayers inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President’s claim that he has done his best on insurgency and militancy came two days after insurgents attacked the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.

The governor was said to be on routine inspection when his convoy was attacked by suspected members of Boko Haram between Baga and Munguno on Wednesday.

On Thursday, multiple explosions from mortars fired by suspected Boko Haram members hit Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, leaving many injured.

But Buhari, who recalled that his regime inherited the security challenges from the previous administration, said he has done his best.

He however knocked security agencies on the current security challenges in the North West and North Central, saying they can do better than what they are currently doing.

The President said, “I want Nigerians to be very conscious of their country and what we inherited when we came in 2015 was Boko Haram – North East and the militants, the South-South. Nigerians know that we have done our best.

“What is coming up in the North West and North Central is very disturbing indeed but I believe the military, the police, and other law enforcement agencies from the report I am getting, I think they could do much better.

“They could do much better, but we are keeping them on the alert all the time to do their duties.”

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, later issued a statement quoting Buhari as giving assurances that there would be more resources for the country’s military, police, and other security agencies to deal with the unwanted security situation in some areas of the country.

The statement was titled “President Buhari pledges more resources to deal with ‘very disturbing’ security situation in parts of the country.”

Shehu said while assessing the state of security in the country, the President described the situation, particularly in the North West and the North Central parts of the country as “very disturbing.”
said considering the security situation on ground when he came to office, ‘Nigerians know that we have done our best. However, what is coming out of the North West and the North Central is very disturbing.’

“Responding to a specific question on the performance of the service chiefs which recently, he said needed to get better, the President said that the military, the police, and other security agencies are working hard.

“We are making available resources to them to even do better,” he assured, adding that “from the reports I am getting, they could do much better…they could do much better. But we are keeping them on the alert all the time to do their duties.”

TV/MoviesCOVID-19: Lai Mohammed Orders NBC To Stop Bbnaija – Report by Johndot(op): 10:25pm On Jul 24, 2020
Kayode Oyero

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has asked the National Broadcasting Commission to halt the transmission of TV reality show, Big Brother Naija.

The minister said the need to stop the reality show, which entered its fifth season on July 20, became imperative due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday, Acting Director-General of the NBC, Armstrong Idachaba, told senior management members of the commission at a meeting that he had been directed by the minister to shut down the show, according to TheCable.

Mohammed reportedly wanted the letter shutting down the show to come from the NBC because of the general opinion that he is bent on sending MultiChoice Ltd, producers of the show, out of Nigeria.

A director had told the meeting that the NBC had on July 1 sought an explanation from Multichoice Ltd on a possible violation of COVID-19 protocol with the airing of the show.

MultiChoice Ltd had subsequently replied the NBC stating the measures taken to forestall any violation of the Covid-19 protocol advised by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, adding that the Lagos State Safety Commission gave approval for the show.

The organisers also said housemates went through mandatory two-week isolation before the commencement of the show and that the BBN House had been disinfected and rearranged to ensure physical distancing, in addition to the elimination of live audience.

Idachaba, was, however, yet to convey the minister’s directive to the organisers of the show.

Efforts by The PUNCH to reach Idachaba proved abortive and a director in the Public Affairs Department of NBC when contacted by our correspondent said he was not permitted to speak on the matter.

When asked whether the commission would issue a statement to counter the report by TheCable, the official, who preferred not to be mentioned, said the commission was not thinking of doing that.

Crime10 Cultists Sleep With New Female Member During Initiation –girl by Johndot(op):
Peter David, Benin City

A 19-year-old girl and member of a cult known as the Marine Girls, Blessing David, on Thursday confessed to having slept with 10 men after she was initiated into the group.

The teenager, who was initiated along with other girls, said sleeping with the men was part of the initiation rites.

She said this at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command in Benin City, when the Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo, paraded 15 armed robbery suspects, six cultists, three kidnappers and four murder suspects.

The cultists paraded were three teenage girls, who were said to be members of the Marine Girls.

Blessing told PUNCH Metro that she was initiated into the group in 2019.

“My name is Blessing David. I was initiated into the cult last year. I slept with 10 men as part of the initiation process,” she stated.

Another 16-year-old girl, Ada Emeka, said she also slept with 10 men as part of the initiation rites.

The CP said two suspected armed robbers were killed in the early hours of Thursday by operatives of the command.

“An eight-man robbery gang, who operated at the Amagba area of Benin City, robbed 13 houses, injuring victims with machetes and other weapons during the operation that started around 12am on Thursday and lasted till 3am. The police engaged them in a gun duel and in the process, two of them were killed,” Kokumo stated.

One of the victims, who gave his name simply as Eghosa, said he was sleeping with his wife in the bedroom when he suddenly saw torch lights pointing at them.

He said, “The robbers removed the window and used blocks to hit the door protector repeatedly before it gave way. They entered our room, collected the money available, injured my mother and my newborn baby with machetes, and smashed my wife’s iPhone on the wall when it was obvious that they could not make use of the phone.

“When they left my place, they robbed about 13 other houses before people called the vigilante group and the police. When the police came, they started exchanging gunfire with the robbers. Two of them were killed and one was arrested. This one was the one who smashed my wife’s iPhone.”

EducationTop 10 Most Educated African Presidents Ever by Johndot(op): 5:30pm On Jul 14, 2020
African education system

The African continent has always been known to have the highest amount of decline in education both in the young and old. The literacy rates of most African countries are very low although, some of these African countries put in all their best such as allocation of funds to improve the education sector of their country, making adult and childhood education compulsory as well all just in the bid of increasing the literacy rate. Although aspects of education in Africa have improved, including more children being knowledgeable about basic things and be able to read and write. Africa has the highest rates of educational exclusion in the world with girls mostly out of schools than boys. A UNESCO study in 2012, has shown that the number of children of primary school age who are not attending school in Africa has accounted for the increase of more than half of the total global education decline.

In sub-Saharan Africa, only about one-quarter of pre-primary teachers are trained. Upper secondary school teachers have a slightly better ratio: about 50 percent have training. Sub-Saharan Africa opposes Eastern Europe and Central Asia when it comes to gender disparity and equality in education among the urban areas. The latter tend to see a higher level of both educational attainment and literacy among females, while sub-Saharan Africa sees the opposite.

The quality and accessibility of education in Africa must be adequately resolved before the situation of the continent itself can improve other problems facing it.UNESCO warns that “without urgent action, the situation will likely get worse as the region (that is, Africa) faces a rising demand for education due to the over growing school age population.”

Education10 Most Literate Countries Of Africa. by Johndot(op): 4:31pm On Jul 14, 2020
Literacy can be said to be the center piece of a nation’s progress, it’s social development and economic growth. The ability to read and write provides more educational and employment opportunities to the population, allowing people to increase their household incomes and bring their family out of poor conditions. Below are listed the top literate countries in Africa.

1. Seychelles: is the first country in Africa with a high level of literacy based on both sexes. It follows strictly the guidelines of the UNESCO. Some of these guidelines includes; to establish free primary education, to improve the quality of childhood education, to improve adult literacy and to provide gender equality in all institutions of learning.

2. Equatorial Guinea: research has shown that the literacy rate in Equatorial Guinea is about 95% for both males and females above 15 years of age. The country has made a significant progress toward the education goals, thereby achieving a preschool enrollment of over 70% in 2015. This continued commitment to improved education is expected to be reflected in future literacy rates.

3. South Africa: the country has recorded over 95% literacy rate mostly in the adults as the younger persons have somehow experienced a decline in education.

4. Libya: the country has recorded 91% literacy rate. The country works to eliminate illiteracy through several prevention methods, like making school mandatory for youth, and several reactive methods, like opening adult literacy centers in each of the districts enhance learning and improve the literacy rate of the adults.

5. Namibia: the government of Namibia has increased its educational expenditures and as of 2013, allocates 29% of the federal budget to boast public education. The country generally has about 91% literacy rate.

6. Mauritius: it has also experienced an improvement in its literacy rates, which currently is at 91%.

7. Cape Verde: Currently, with an 88% literacy rate, it also ranks too among the most literate countries in Africa. This increase in literacy is due to the educational system that was put into place after this country gained its independence in 1975.

8. Botswana: it also ranks top among the most literate countries in Africa with an 88% of the population over 15 years of age who are able to read and write. This reflects the commitment to education made by the government of Botswana and the success of its National Literacy Programme. This program was established in 1977 and has made significant progress in reaching the adult illiterate population.

9. Swaziland: it has an increased literacy rate of 87% of it’s population who are able to read and write. This has been one of the major achievements of the education system of the country since it’s Independence.

10. Zimbabwe: it also ranks among the top literate African countries with a 87% literacy rate.
In conclusion Education in Africa is known to have always been on the verge of decline as most African countries boast of a very low literacy rate among adults.

It is then of little wonder why education is not a topmost criterion when choosing a national leader in the African continent. In countries where there are educated presidents in juxtaposition to their performances is an irony, which then makes the educational credentials of African presidents in comparison to good leadership, not a criterion.

Although, Africa has the most educated leaders in the world, and the continent continues to experience plodding progress. Many critics have also attributed this to the high level of corruption evident within African governments.

In the tribute which was also included in the daily devotional, ‘Open Heavens’, Adeboye described his wife as the embodiment of the virtuous woman as described in the biblical book of Proverbs Chapter 31.
Adeboye, who has been married for over 50 years, said his wife still cooks for him and is submissive.

He said many husbands of today misbehave because their wives fail to show them the respect that they deserve.

The pastor wrote, “The husband is the head of the wife. No matter how educated or successful you are, your husband is your head and you must regard him as such at all times. It is a terrible thing for the husband to feel that his wife is his head. Many men are misbehaving in their marriage because they want to establish that they are the head of their wives.

“Also, my wife is my number one fan. She wrote in the book Mathematics of marriage- which we coauthored, that as my help meet she knows she cannot help me without my instructions, so when they come, her response is ‘Yes sir’.

“Busy as she is, she still cooks my meals and serve me herself. Many young ladies these days leave everything to the house help. My wife still trims my nails for me.”

Although the message was well-received by many of Adeboye’s followers, several feminists on social media called out the cleric for promoting patriarchy and male chauvinism.

On Twitter, Adeboye was trending at number one on Tuesday amid the raging controversy.

@_Toseen_ tweeted, “If marriage is going to be how Baba Adeboye described it, then I cannot.”

@benxta_ also tweeted, “I can’t believe Adeboye really sat down and found a way to make his wife’s birthday about himself and his power over her. A simple ‘happy birthday my love’ will do next time please.”

@ehssayy stated, “No one turned it into a gender war. It’s your wife’s birthday and yes I know the woman has chosen her path in marriage but if that’s how you praise someone you’re in love with and is supposed to be your wife then it’s just sad.”

“The definition of wife material in our country is a slavery woman. Acts like doll baby you’re a good woman,” @prettyb26275331 tweeted.

However, thousands of Tweeps came out in support of Adeboye.

Social media influencer, Japheth Omojuwa, said it was unfortunate that some youths could attack Adeboye who is a respected cleric.

A tweep, Dipo Awojide, wrote, “Listen to Pastor Adeboye when he speaks. The man is old, wise and experienced. You might not agree with everything he says, but his messages are usually filed with wisdom for those who pay attention.”

@Tifeofficial tweeted, “Normally, women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands. Pastor Adeboye was just stating facts and appreciating his wife for being submissive, so it’s stupid to insult him when he was just being right. Plus: if he was a terrible husband, submission would have been hard for her.”

season, The PUNCH reports.

The news comes as relief for the country’s teeming football populace, millions of whom are followers of LaLiga, as the latest development affords them the chance to watch live Spanish top-tier league matches on the platform of StarTimes.

It also brings to an end the exclusivity clause in live sports content broadcasting rights in Nigeria, after stakeholders had clamoured for its removal.

In January, the Federal Government prohibited exclusivity rights in broadcasting sporting events in the country.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, directed the National Broadcasting Commission to implement a new regulation mandating broadcasters and exclusive licensees to share such exclusive rights with other broadcasters.

Mohammed stated, “This regulation prevents the misuse of monopoly or market power or anti-competitive and unfair practices by a foreign or local broadcaster to suppress other local broadcaster in the television and radio markets.

“This is so, having removed exclusivity from all content in Nigeria and mandated the sharing of all content upon the payment of commercially viable fees.”

StarTimes’ entry into LaLiga is expected to redefine the Pay TV sector and further attract more Nigerians to the league, which boasts some of the biggest names like Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Jan Oblak, Luiz Suarez in world football, a top stakeholder told our correspondent.
“Their (StarTimes) affordable pricing, when compared to the other major players in the sector, will bring a competitive edge,” our source said.

Foreign AffairsMali President’s Son Resigns Parliament Role Amid Protests by Johndot(op): 9:57pm On Jul 13, 2020
The son of Mali’s embattled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a target of popular anger in the fragile West African state, resigned as chair of the parliament’s defence committee on Monday.

Karim Keita left the role as the government faces a growing protest movement, sparked by the outcome of parliamentary elections in March and April, but whose underlying causes include discontent over its handling of Mali’s jihadist insurgency.

Economic woes and perceived government corruption have also fuelled public anger.
A protest in the capital Bamako on Friday turned violent after protesters blocked bridges and attacked the parliament building.

Clashes persisted over the weekend and through Monday, with the protesters calling on President Boubacar to resign.

Eleven people have died and 124 have been injured since the unrest began, according to staff at a major hospital.

Karim Keita has been another target of protesters’ anger over suspicions he leads a playboy lifestyle.

Recently leaked videos — which AFP could not independently verify — appear to show him enjoying himself at a party aboard a luxury yacht, for example, causing a scandal in the impoverished country of some 19 million people.

On Monday, Keita said in a statement that he would resign as parliamentary defence committee chair because he no longer wants to figure in arguments raised by political opponents.
He will continue to work as an MP, however.

New Malian Prime Minister Boubou Cisse on Saturday vowed to rapidly form a government “open to facing the challenges of the day”.

Mali has struggled to contain a jihadist insurgency that first emerged in the north in 2012 before spreading to the centre of the country.

Thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ndubuisi Egbo is two wins away from leading KF Tirana to the league title in Albania, The PUNCH reports.

If Tirana emerge league winners, it would be the first time a Nigerian would lead a European team to the league title.

Egbo’s Tirana currently lead the Albanian top flight with 66 points from 33 games and need at least six points to be crowned champions of the division.

Second-placed Kukesi are four points adrift Tirana with 62 points from the same games played.

Tirana will face Flamurtari, Laci and Bylis in their remaining three league fixtures of the season.

When asked of his team’s chances of clinching the title, the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medalist told The PUNCH, “We still have three games to finish the league and it’s not over yet.

“We are four points from the second position and we need maximum points from two of our remaining games to be champions, that is assuming the team in the second position win all their games.”

Meanwhile, his side trail seventh-place Bylis 2-1 ahead of the second leg of the Albanian Cup final billed for Wednesday.

PoliticsOnly God Can Make Igbo Man President – Arthur Eze by Johndot(op): 7:04am On Jul 13, 2020

Tony Okafor, Awka

Billionaire oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze, has said it will take God for an Igbo man to become Nigeria’s President.

According to him, the Igbo people do not love another and are not united.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Eze advised the Ndigbo not to crave for a President of Igbo extraction but a President who would champion their interest irrespective of his tribe.

He spoke to journalists in Ukpo, Anambra State, on Sunday, during a church service.

He declared that he would support a good leader as Nigerian President irrespective of the person’s ethnic group.

Eze said, “For the Igbo to be President, they must love themselves. Do they love themselves? The North is very kind. If you go to northern Nigerian, you will see churches everywhere. There are churches in Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Abuja and others yet they say there is hatred. Do we (Igbo) love ourselves?

“Only God can make an Igbo man President. We shall pray to God to find an Igbo man who has character to help people. I would prefer someone who has conscience; somebody who will remember me. I don’t care where you come from.

“I went to the North, they didn’t know who I was. They gave me $12m for the construction of Kano TV in 1980. I didn’t have one naira then. It was the same thing in Katsina, Borno and Kaduna. Then, they put me in oil business. They didn’t care where I came from. Tell me any Igbo man who can do that?”

CrimeBanditry Left Us With 500 Widows, 1,600 Orphans –katsina District Head by Johndot(op): 1:14pm On Jul 12, 2020
Alhaji Mohammed Muazu is the District Head of Batsari, in the Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State, and Sarkin Ruma, Katsina. He tells OLAIDE OYELUDE about recent attacks by bandits, including the killing of 15 farmers in Yar Gamji village, and how the attackers are making life difficult for residents in his community

How did you receive the news of the killing of the farmers in your community?

The development could best be described as horrible. Banditry now takes place in my community almost on a daily basis. Let me clarify, however, that the attack at Yar Gamji did not take place inside the village but on the farmlands. The bandits swooped on the farmers on the farmlands at about 11am. The security officials helped us to drive them away. The bandits had, however, killed the 15 farmers and injured two others before the arrival of the security officials who engaged them in a shootout and eventually drove them away.

The renewed attacks by bandits have naturally instilled fear and frustration in my people. People can no longer go to their farms as they used to do because of the fear of attacks. Even in the various towns and villages in the council, people sleep with one eye open. We know the government is trying its best but we shall always appeal to them to do more. As I speak, we in the Batsari Local Government Area are more concerned about our security. It is only when our community is secure that we talk of farming or any other business. Currently, farming activities only take place in four villages in the whole of the council because of security challenges.

Farming activities take place only in Ruma, Batsari, Wagini and Abadau, and we have over 200 villages. Yet, we are predominantly farmers here.

How many members of your community have been killed by bandits?

The losses are unquantifiable. I cannot actually quantify the losses in terms of monetary value. I will only say the monetary losses are in millions of naira. For instance, how much can bring back those who were killed by the bandits? You cannot quantify the loss of a single human being in terms of naira and kobo. Yet, we have lost over 300 people to the bandits. The bandits killed our innocent, able-bodied men and women. Specifically, the bandits have killed at least 300 men. Because of the deaths, we now have no fewer than 500 widows and 1,600 orphans. Also, the model school where the internally displaced persons are taking refuge is filled to the brim because of the bandits’ activities. Apart from disrupting our farming activities, the bandits rustled between three million and four million cows which are mainly bulls. Also, our children could not go to school anymore in all the areas that the bandits attacked because of their safety. Some of the children are being relocated to other places considered safer.

Are you surprised that the bandits still operate in your area despite the presence of the Federal Government Special Forces in the council?

One should naturally be baffled. We appreciate the efforts of both the federal and state governments in tackling the bandits. As I said earlier, it was the Special Forces that helped us drive away the bandits who killed our farmers on Monday. We know the government is trying its best but we shall always appeal to them to do more. As I speak, we in Batsari LGA are more concerned about our security. Our findings have revealed that many of these bandits are not from the state. They are mainly from Zamfara State and Niger Republic. That is why we are calling on the Federal Government to do more for the state (Katsina). There was an occasion on which we went to settle the rift among farmers and the herders in one of our communities, believing that if we did that, there would not be an attack on the community again. But the very day we tried to settle the rift, the bandits attacked the community again and we discovered that the bandits who attacked the community were from Zamfara State and Niger Republic. It is because of this that we are begging the Federal Government to do more for us in terms of security.

It was observed that some IDPs were initially taking refuge in your palace. Where are they now?

The IDPs you saw the other time have been relocated to the model school where other IDPs are being taken care of by the state government for better coordination. You know, at the model school, we have various government officials, including health personnel and welfare officers who take care of them on a daily basis. Security is also provided for them there.

How many IDPs are there now?

I don’t have an idea of the actual figure. But the government officials taking care of them should know. All I know is that the IDPs make the palace their first port of call whenever bandits strike in their communities. They are later resettled at the model school. The villagers at Yar Gamji are, however, not relocating because of the attack. The village head of Yar Gamji was even in Batsari on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 and he has gone back to the village to join his people. The attack occurred on their farmlands and not in the village. We can only appeal to both the federal and the state governments to do more. On our part, we shall keep on praying for the success of the governments in their efforts to end banditry in the state.

EducationCouncil Meeting: ASUU Threatens Showdown With Babalakin In UNILAG by Johndot(op): 12:14pm On Jul 12, 2020
Grace Edema

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Lagos chapter, has threatened a showdown with its Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin, if he attempts to visit the university.

The union stated this in a statement signed by the UNILAG ASUU Chairman, Dr Dele Ashiru, adding that Babalakin would be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order his presence would cause on the campus.

UNILAG has been embroiled in a union and leadership crisis with ASUU, the Governing Council, Babalakin and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at the centre.

It had been reported in May 2019 that SSANU criticised ASUU for being insincere, while lamenting that the institution’s finances were being run by a cabal and Babalakin should overhaul the system.

Deepening the crisis, ASUU had also on March 2020 passed a vote of no confidence in Babalakin, saying he was a persona non grata on the campus.

ASUU stated on Saturday in a statement that it had mobilised to oppose a council meeting being called by Babalakin on the campus.

Ashiru said, “The attention of our union has been drawn to a surreptitious Council meeting summoned by Dr Wale Babalakin. He should be advised to rethink his intention of entering the University of Lagos campus as his presence may rupture the long cherished peace and tranquility on our campus.”

“He should also be held squarely responsible for any breakdown of law and order which his presence on our campus may create. Meanwhile, all members of our great Union in the university have been fully mobilised and put on alert.”

Ashiru maintained that the vote of no confidence passed on Babalakin’s status on account of his alleged cancellation of the university’s convocation ceremonies has not been vacated by the Congress of ASUU.

While reacting to the threat by UNILAG ASUU, Babalakin’s spokesman, Mikail Mumuni said freedom of movement is a fundamental human right of every Nigerian, adding that ASUU has no authority to declare Babalakin persona non grata.

“They don’t have the authority to do that. Unilag is owned by the Federal Government. Dr Babalakin is representing the Federal Government as Chairman of the Council. ASUU members are staff of unilag. Employees cannot declare their employers persona non grata at their place of work,” he said.

InvestmentNigeria Heading For Recession In Q4 2020 — FG by Johndot(op): 12:27pm On Jul 11, 2020
Okechukwu Nnodim, Abuja

Nigeria is heading for another recession in the fourth quarter of this year, the Federal Government declared on Friday.

According to the government, findings showed that the country’s Gross Domestic Product for the second and third quarters of 2020 were projected to be negative.

This, it said, implied that the country would slide into a second recession in four years.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the country’s real GDP had been projected by the National Bureau of Statistics to contract by 4.2 per cent in 2020, as against the previous projected growth of 2.9 per cent.

“Q2 and Q3 2020 GDP growth is projected to be negative, which means that the country will lapse into a second recession in four years,” she said.

She also revealed that the Federal Government’s earnings dropped by about 65 per cent following the cuts in oil production.

Ahmed spoke during a virtual consultative public forum in Abuja where she presented the Draft 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework/Fiscal Strategy Paper.

She noted that the economy faced serious challenges in the first half of the year as the macroeconomic environment was significantly disrupted by COVID-19.

According to her, crude price dropped from $72 per barrel in January to below $20 in April 2020, making the $57 crude oil benchmark of the 2020 budget unsustainable.

“The massive output cut by OPEC and its allies to stabilise global oil market, with Nigeria contributing about 300,000 barrels per day of production cuts, resulted in about 65 per cent decline in projected net 2020 government revenues,” the minister said.

She said the revenue reduction was from the oil and gas sector and had adverse consequences on foreign exchange inflows into the economy.

“Unless we achieve a very strong Q3 2020 economic performance, the Nigerian economy is likely to lapse into a second recession in four years, with significant adverse consequences,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed also stated that the Federal Government planned to spend N11.86tn in 2021.

According to her, Nigeria’s monetary futunes would suffer a deficit of N5.16tn because of the government’s projected ability to generate only N6.98tn revenue all in 2021.

CrimeECOWAS Court Orders FG To Repeal Cybercrime Law by Johndot(op): 7:48am On Jul 11, 2020
Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

The ECOWAS Court of Justice sitting in Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Federal Government of Nigeria to repeal or amend the provision of its cybercrimes law, which violates citizens’ right of expression.

Delivering the judgment of the three-man panel of the court, Justice Januaria Costa ordered the Nigerian government to make the law to align with its obligation under Article 1 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

A summary of the judgment released by the court’s media unit on Friday stated that the verdict “held the Nigerian government liable for the violation of the right to freedom of expression” with the enactment of Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act, 2015.

The said Section 24 of the law, criminalises sending from computer messages, considered to be among others, “grossly offensive, pornographic or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character or causes any such message or matter to be so sent,” or that the person “knows to be false, for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety to another or causes such a message to be sent.”

A civil society group, Laws and Rights Awareness Initiative, had, through its counsel, Mr Chukwudi Ajaegbo, filed the suit marked application ECW/CCJ/APP/53/18 on November 6, 2018, claiming, among others, that its members’ freedom of expression on the Internet or in the use of computer devices was limited/breached by Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act enacted by the Nigerian government.

The plaintiff further claimed that nine of its partners were arrested and detained in connection with the enforcement of the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act in violation of Articles 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and 39 of the Nigeria’s Constitution.

Opposing the suit, the Nigerian government argued that Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2015 was adopted as a legislative measure to give effect to freedom of expression as provided in Article 9(2) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and was in accordance with provisions of Section 39(3) of the country’s 1999 Constitution.

Although the court upheld the plaintiff’s prayer seeking the striking down of Section 24 of the cybercrime law, it dismissed other claims of the plaintiffs contained in the suit for lack of evidence.

Other judges on the panel, Justices Dupe Atoki (presiding) and Keikura Bangura, agreed with Justice Costa, who delivered the judgment.

PoliticsUPDATED: Osinbajo Asks IG To Probe Blogger Over N4bn Magu Report by Johndot(op): 4:58pm On Jul 09, 2020
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, demanding the probe of a blogger, Jackson Ude, who is also the publisher of an online medium, Point Blank News.

The petition dated July 8, 2020, is titled, ‘Criminal Defamation of the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), GCON by Jackson Ude’.
In the petition written on his behalf by his lawyer, Bayo Osipitan, the Vice-President said Jackson authored a story in which it was alleged that the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, who is facing a Presidential probe, told the investigative panel that he gave N4bn to Osinbajo.

The Vice-President said Ude was in the habit of publishing malicious articles against his person. He subsequently attached printed copies of some of the blogger’s reports to the petition.

Osinbajo said the articles were defamatory and capable of bringing him to ridicule before members of the public.

He called on the IG to probe the blogger with a view to prosecuting him for criminal defamation.
Osinbajo said Ude also likened him to alleged international fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, by calling him ‘Hush-bajo’.

The petition read in part, “These vicious and malicious publications are meant to achieve one objective only, to present to his readership and others (Nigerians and foreigners) that our client is a dishonest and disloyal public officer and consequently unfit for the position of Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria he is occupying.

“We are of the view that unless an action for criminal defamation is commenced against the said Mr. Jackson Ude, he will continue to use his social media platform to publish materials that are false and criminally defamatory of our client’s reputation.
“In view of the above, we humbly request that you cause the above allegations made against our client to be investigated and if the suggested investigation confirms our complaint of the falsehood of these allegations, to initiate criminal proceedings pursuant to the provisions of Sections 391-395 of the Penal Code Act for criminal defamation against the said Jackson Ude.”

Checks by The PUNCH on Thursday showed that Ude, who is based in the United States, continued to tweet about Osinbajo and his alleged role in the EFCC.

He tweeted,“I am not afraid of Osinbajo and his minions. If he indeed wants to go to court, he needs to resign first and sue me. He cannot be VP and be using state resources to intimidate the judiciary. He cannot wave immunity that he didn’t confer on himself. Osinbajo should resign first.”

CrimeI’d Resign If I Were Magu —former DSS Director by Johndot(op): 10:10am On Jul 07, 2020
A former Assistant Director with the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, says he would have resigned if he were facing corruption allegations like the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Amachree said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Tuesday.
He said based on the large number of allegations Magu is facing before a Presidential panel, it would be difficult for him to go scot-free.
The former DSS official, however, said even if Magu is found to be clean after the investigation, it would be best for him to still resign.
Amachree said he was surprised that Magu was retained by the President despite being rejected twice by the Senate.

The former DSS official, however, said even if Magu is found to be clean after the investigation, it would be best for him to still resign.

Amachree said he was surprised that Magu was retained by the President despite being rejected twice by the Senate.

He said the fact that the panel was sitting at the Presidential Villa showed that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was behind the probe.

Amachree said, “If I was Magu and I go before this panel and they give me a clean bill that all the allegations against me are faulty, once I come out, what I would do is to resign.”
