pranil: The seller has not quoted the Max charge and discharge current. The cells pre 2015 were all low rated ( mostly 50 Amps) ( 2.5 KW on 48 V max)
Please check that. Also cycle life was low ( 1500-1600). Nowadays cells with 5000 cycles are available.
Herwin ( china ) gave me a quotation of 1900 USD exworks of brand new for 10 KWH (48 V) including BMS and assemled system - I have also posted the freedomwon pricing earlier
The used ones are coming to almost 2000 Pounds for 48 V plus you have to use cables, MCB, fuses etc.

earthrealm: @all... do we think the solar water heater wud fare well in a rented apartment?............am thinking of incorporating it in my build.......... 2ndly perchance one wants to switch back to electric heaters, am thinking it should be easy enough to replace it with an external 50ltr ariston type... cc: georged1, johnkester @all GeorgeD1 has said it all. Nothing more to add. Until you begin to enjoy it, you won't completely understand what we are saying. I will just paint a little picture: Imagine hot water on call, without thinking... You don't need to bother whether there was light to run the heater, or if the heater would irredeemably drain your batteries, assuming its connected to your solar setup. Just turn the tap and hot water flows as a natural way of life! The beauty with this particular system is that it is a standalone, not depending on anything else to run! I am sure you get the picture now! Cheers |

GeorgeD1: gennextech, this is one very important aspect of solar panel maintenance that most of us have been taking for granted. after over 6 years of installation and not cleaning my own panels even once, i must confess that i've seen a large drop in efficiency of my system. i'm almost tempted to hire a scaffold and go up there to do a thorough cleaning of the panels myself. GeorgeD1 Haba, six years of no cleaning! You are putting your batteries in serious jeopardy! Unless of course your PV array is so large and can compensate for the dust. Otherwise I dare say your batteries may not have been charging fully for a while now. The drop in yield would be tremendous and you will be surprised at the difference after the cleaning. The sooner you hire that scaffold and do the needful, the better and the sooner your system will come back alive again! Cheers |

GeorgeD1: nairababa, my own experience with the tristar meter connectivity has been anything but pleasant. i think this is one area morningstar corp needs to improve in their devices. in this day and age when the drive is towards seamless internet connectivity vis iot (internet of things), its really disheartening to come across products where you have to jump through hoops just to connect them to your system. indeed, its no longer enough to make charge controllers that have a 99.8% conversion efficiency, those same controllers should be able to talk to other devices by the click of a button. I agree completely. As a matter of fact, I have not been able to update my 2 CCs because the serial ports are very selective of the serial-USB cables. So for now I have suspended the effort until I am able to network the two CCs together. That being said, even with the lack of network and no communication between the two Charge controllers, I must say that they work seamlessly together as if they communicate. The only drawback is that I cannot use Automatic Equalization and so I have to manually activate them to equalize whenever I need them to. Morningstar should strive to make their products more plug and play compliant. Cheers |

NairaBaba: Dear All, I recently changed my CC from Etracer 60a to Morningstar Tristar 60a. I had no problem configuring my etracer for remote monitoring from laptop. But this tristar 60amp is giving a lot of challenges for some days to connect to laptop for remote monitoring.
I try connecting using the ethernet port on the CC connected to a wireless router using a RJ-45 cable ( see pictures below) and laptop connected to the router via wireless. Then try to access the tristar web server using http://tsmppt15030496 on my browser. I kept getting Server not found.
I also try using MSview, whenever I launch Msview I see the the CC but can't connect to it (see pictures below) . Please all the Gurus in the house I need your help. You need a hardware called Ethernet Meterbus to achieve what you desire. Cheers |

Saipro: Most consume at least 800W. Swift and even cooking. Saves time. Cooks well. Highly pot selective. Generally won't work with most conventional pots around here as they're mostly aluminium (the steel set of 3 pots I bought a few days to Christmas cost me N21,000 and were an excellent bargain, believe me). Currently use two and have two new ones in store as backup, should I need them in a hurry. That's how much I love them.
Wanna look into bio-digesters too. Them seem good to have though a hassle to maintain. Thanks a bunch for the response. Any particular brands you care to recommend both for the Induction Cooker and the Pots? I intend to research the bio-digesters, but in the meantime, can you enlighten me further on the technology? Cheers |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by JohnKester: 5:54pm On Jan 11, 2017 |
dapsyra: I have an induction cooker which I have used for over six years.
Induction cookers are far more energy efficient than hotplates. They also cook faster than hotplates while consuming less energy.
The Induction Cooker does not get hot during use since heat transfer between it and the pot is not by convection. The cooker rather induce metal base of the pot to generate heat. Heat loss is greatly reduced because the heat is generated inside the pot.
The down side of an Induction Cooker is that it does not work with your regular aluminium or steel pots. You require "Induction Pots" to use it. These pots are a bit pricey. Many thanks for your response. I am encouraged by your experience. Cheers |

samnaija: thats why i dey here. if i can get someone to check out the system. help needed.. I suppose your 3x4 configuration means 3 panels connected in series giving you 4 sets that are paralleled. If so, you are in order as that should be your optimal yield connection. However, you need to confirm that this was done right since that was the first time the installer was doing that. In addition, the suggestions already made regarding the size of cables used remain valid. Also ascertain that the distance between the batteries and the CC is not too much and that the size of cable used is commensurate to prevent voltage drop. Finally, as already suggested, get a professional competent installer to audit the setup and make necessary adjustments. Cheers |

dapsyra: Thank you for the nice words.
The battery equalizer ensures that the batteries are within 0.2v of one another. It is the only battery equalizer that I have installed that really works. Before I installed it, the differences between my battery voltages is as much as 2.5v at times. During the absorb charging stage, the weakest battery will quickly rise to 15.6v while the strongest is still at 13.1v. All the other batteries will have various values in between the two extremes. This rapid increase in voltage of the weakest battery raise the array average disproportionally and prevent the other batteries from charging properly. This issue was effectively resolved by the battery equalizer and my batteries are now always within 0.2v of one another.
The desulphator is used to desulphate my SMF AGM batteries. The AGM batteries are 4years old and are beginning to to show signs of old age.
For the Mercury 220AH batteries, I set absorb=57.8V, float=54.4V and equalize=62V. The Mercury MC5048E Inverter cannot handle battery voltages above 58V, so I was forced to set the absorb voltage slightly below that limit.
I always disconnect the Mercury batteries from the Inverter before triggering equalization from the Charge Controller. I am interested in the battery equalizer. Any possibility of helping with sourcing or pointing me to the source. Many thanks. Cheers |

hazelj: Hello all, I am putting up my whole solar power system up for sale. It was setup and installed by Richmon74. The components are as follows: 4 255W Solarworld Mono panels Morningstar MPPT 60Amp Charge controller 2 12v 160aH Fullriver Batteries virtually brand new (installed July 2016) 1 Sukam inverter 24v 1.4Kva It comes with a stainless steel roof mount and battery rack. Cables and connectors are bundled free of charge.
Total cost 470k if bought as a bundle.
This is an excellent deal as this setup will cost almost twice this to implement brand new. Reason for selling is relocation. Was not in the country for 2 months so the batteries have been floating since.
Would prefer to sell this as a unit. What is your location? Pics of the items would be nice. Cheers |

earthrealm: HMM this is really straNGE FOR 2YR OLD TROJANS, did you buy them brand new?.
if you bought them brand new, only thing i know that may have caused this is having a too concentrated electrolyte in the batteries that will corrode the plates, and maybe not desulphating them at regular intervals, will also cause the electrolyte to separate out, with the conc part at the bottom...causing corrosion. does the owner have a hydrometer?. is he guilty of any of the points i listed? sorry cant help you as per the other questions you asked I also wondered, given the fact the batteries are only two years old. Trojan build very good batteries and it would take a lot of misuse and abuse for this level of damage to occur within such a short period of use. Before fixing the batteries themselves, I will suggest you investigate what caused the damage to the batteries in the first place. I suspect any of the following may have happened: 1. Topping the batteries with acid instead of distilled water as a lot of people are still under the notion that acid is used to top up batteries when the level of electrolyte becomes low. The acid will corrode the plates and damage them. 2. The charger may also be the culprit, if it was not regulating the charging. Consistent and uncontrolled overcharging can also strip away the plates and cause similar damage. If regular battery charger was used, it is better to switch to a regulated multiphase charger. If a charge controller is used assuming the person is using solar, then the CC is not working well and should be changed. 3. Consistent and regular deep discharge can also strip the plates, thereby also resulting to similar damage. If 1 and 3 above are ruled out, then whatever device was used to charge the batteries is not suitable and should be changed forthwith. The owner, however, should bear in mind that even if the batteries get repaired, they are most likely not going to perform as originally designed to perform by Trojan. Cheers |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by JohnKester: 10:09am On Nov 18, 2016 |
For me, even the initial cost of acquisition is higher with conventional water heaters except, of course, it is a small apartment where you have to install one or two. Once it goes over that, for example a three bedroom apartment where you will need at least 4 water heaters (one for each room - ensuite ones) and the fourth one for the kitchen. It even get more expensive when it is a duplex where you may have up to 5 bedrooms and then kitchens both for the main house and the service quarters and so forth. When you compute all these, the cost the acquisition will already surpass the cost for the solar water heater even if you decide to go for the 300L type.
All arguments speak for the solar water heater and as far as I am concern, none speaks for the conventional electric water heaters.
On another note, has anyone experienced using Induction Cookers on solar. I am toying with the idea. Please share your experience.

You need to provide more information regarding the hardwares: e.g. panels, batteries, inverter, charge controller and general installation. Your installation may be faulty and your batteries may actually not be charging and if you are not careful, the batteries may be damaged if you do not find a solution soon.

Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by JohnKester: 5:19pm On Sep 17, 2016 |
bigrovar: Here are the issues with eliminating the need for inverter by switching to DC appliances.
1 the price would make it not a cost effective solution. The price of a DC freezer is 5x that of an average AC freezer. Same goes for DC TV, DC pumping machine and even DC light bulbs. The astronomical cost of this appliances would be better served if used in procurement of panels and batteries
2 DC appliances are not common place. They are far from mainstream and as a result getting support and spares would be a hassle. Even the most remote village has someone who can repair an AC powered freezer. Same with TV.. The biggest headache with having an home composed of DC appliances is lack of support and spares.. and when u find such trust me they would be very expensive
Finally DC is low voltage electricity and one of the important laws of ohms is that low voltage meet high resistance. Unless you are ready to spend crazy sums on wiring.. using 16 to 22mm wires round your home (which is just impractical) to ensure you 12v reaches it intended load without dropping out to resistance. Most DC appliances are 12v and as such your battery set up would be limited to 12v (with inherent inefficiencies) if you use a higher voltage battery bank like 48v then I would need a DC to DC converter to down convert to 12v (which just defeats the purpose of getting rid of an inverter)
The world standardised on AC because of the high voltage and low current which make it easier to travel over long distances and saves cost of wiring. It is better to go for energy efficient AC device and spend extra on power generation. DC home is just impractical unless basic solar setup for lighting and mobile phone charging. Completely well said! Nothing to add! Good work Bigrovar! Cheers |
