Suppliers/Dealers/Engineers etc in the house.

I am in need of a Pure Sine Wave Inverter (inverter only). I do not need the charger as I live completely off-grid and charge my batteries with my PV arrays only. I have a backup generator, but I do not charge the batteries with it. It is purely for backup. The capacity of the Pure Sine Wave Inverter only should be between 6KW and 8KW, and able to power submersible pumps, refrigerators, air conditioners, pressing irons, washing machines, dryers and other household appliances and office equipment. It should also be able to power small power tools such as drilling and cutting machines

The inverter should be a low self-consumption inverter.

Nicely put. Interesting to know you are now offgrid, this i wanted badly but due to space consideration in my current location i am still stuck with 1000W.

Regarding premature battery failure, sometimes there are many factors other than load why battery fails. for instance under-utilizing a battery might cause memory effect so it may be necessary to discharge appreciably once in a while and also equalize including AGM except gel. also there are a lot of fake batteries out there. Many inverters in the market have poor charging systems that cuts of before the batteries are fully charged thereby loosing capacity progressively.

but a general challenge is the high susceptibility of lead acid to failure especially if not well managed and maintained and this know-how might be too much for the average user and as such i strongly recommend the rugged lithium iron phosphate with upto 80% DOD with negligible capacity loss as well as absence of memory effect and acceptable high current draw. Mine is delivering like kilode!
DMerciful

From what I read from Trojan literature regarding their flooded batteries, they were very emphatic that their flooded batteries DO NOT develop any form of memory at all. Is there a new development contrary to their assertion. Please let us know!

@OP

Nice to have bumped into this thread and thanks for giving LR enthusiasts a bit more confidence.

I am considering getting a Land Rover vehicle, but I am torn between 2008/2009 LR3 and 2011 LR4. Which of these would you recommend to give better service in terms of performance, reliability and maintenance? In others words, which would give me the least troubles?

Do you render the service of accompanying one to Cotonou to do a pre-purchase inspection of LR vehicles?

Lastly, you said you travel a lot, so I am presuming that you can travel to Port Harcourt to service/repair LR vehicles?

Many thanks.

Sometimes buying PV modules are subjective decision.
We know fast buoys are capable of rebranding best brands.
If he want a reliable PV let him try shineshine solar module. He can thank me when he isolate & test them before incorporating it to upgrading during installation.

I had mixed feelings when I ordered for some( particularly when people believed it is of a lower quality) surprisingly, i had a huge leap in my production almost up to nominal PV ratings. I have since been harvested my returns immediately. I observed the design of each cells has been changed from previous design thay had.
With that experience, I have since received my fresh order, installed, enjoying my investment.

Depsite bad weather (as if the sun always draw clouds to cover its face) I consistently complete my 2hrs bsorption by 10.30-11am with my 3x4 setup. And always looking for what switch or put-on to keep my modules smiling.

I am not advertising sunshine modules. As DIY I will say the reverse if it is not true, after all it is my investment and my setup.
Harmonise the first bold with the second so we can understand better.

Welcome to the club. You have nothing to fear. Once you buy the car, i will move to Ph just to honour you. I have an Lr4 but without engine for 3m maybe that will be a good buy and order the engine and you will now have a new 2011 lr4.
Thanks for the response.

Regarding the LR4, Kindly help me with answers to the following questions to enable me give it a thought:

What the is the state of the LR4? Was it involved in an accident? and exactly what happened to the Engine?
How was the maintenance culture of the previous owner?
Is it Foreign or Nigerian used? If Nigerian used, was it bought brand new? If not, for how long was it used by the previous owner?
What is the capacity of the engine?
What is the trim SE, HSE or LUX?
Is the engine to be ordered a brand new one or a used one?
How much would the engine cost? And how much would you charge to mount the engine?

I will send you a chat on WhatsApp, using my username here. We can continue the discussion on that platform. In addition, I will appreciate if you can send me pictures of the LR4.

Good evening Sooperrescue

I stumbled on this thread while I was researching Land Rover LR3, which hopefully shall be my next vehicle. This thread has given me a boost of confidence and I can now confidently say that I am interested in the 2008 model V8 HSE. What is your candid advice?

I am based in Port Harcourt, so I would like to know if your outfit is now operational in Port Harcourt. It would be good to know that I have reliable hands that would help keep my LR3 healthy and happy, when I eventually get it. The address and contact information would be in order.

Can you help source a sound direct tokunbo (foreign used) or a sound very clean, well-maintained Nigerian Used 2008 LR3, V8 HSE preferably with the DVD so that the children can be kept entertained when traveling on long trips. A 2008 already upgraded to 2012 would be preferable also.

Awaiting your earliest response.

Many thanks

You're quite right. The less time you have to charge up your batteries, the higher the voltage you'll need. Up to a certain limit. Your neck of the woods is notorious for having overcast skies. Even if we had perpetually clear skies, the cost:benefit ratio forces most people to have RE setups that just can't charge fully in the given hours of sunlight at the recommended voltages (the recommeded settings seem to assume infinite time and unlimited access to recharge power when you need it). The problem isn't with the sizing of the system or the equipment; there just aren't enough hours of sunlight.

You don't wanna be too hard on your batteries either. Luckily, the Midnite has something most others don't - temperature compensated equalisation.
Many thanks for your contribution. And I must say, from my own experience, you are right regarding the set points recommended by the manufacturers and that is what got me worried. Slow charge that is not steady due to cloud casts, keeps trickling in until it eventually gets fully charged. I got worried that the slow charging never really get the batteries happily charged. Even the activity inside the batteries when charging was not encouraging compared with what I am experiencing with the set point #7.

I am trying not to lose my batteries prematurely and so I have to do things right.

By the way, Morningstar has the temperature compensated equalization too!

NiyiOmoIyunade:
MorningStar MPPT setting #6 is for flooded batteries at 14.7volts absorb voltage per 12v battery - in my experience this voltage setting only works if you cycle your batteries very shallowly, you are able to get a full charge after each discharge cycle and your battery electrolyte SG is say 1.260max. Most L16s come in between 1.275 to 1.300 SG and require a higher charge voltage otherwise you begin to see the electrolyte in some cells become 'slow' and the cells go weak.

15.4volts absorb appears high to most people but in reality is a good place to be - at that kind of voltage you ensure that the electrolyte is agitated/mixed properly all through the cell and avoid acid stratification - worst consequence is that you may water your batteries more frequently - but frequent watering is a common issue with Trojans neways.

Oh lest I forget, it is necessary at these high voltages to engage your BTS Battery Temperature Sensor so that the controller can deliver a proper temperature compensated charge, throttling back the absorb voltage as battery/ambient temperature rises - if you can't be bothered with BTS then bury your batteries below ground or use any other mechanism to keep them cool at around 25° C. - BTS at around $30 + shipping comes in cheaper I would wager than any other option.

Most batteries die an early death due to undercharging - flooded batteries especially those under severe duty cycles should be charged at higher voltages than would otherwise appear normal.

I have the MorningStar TS MPPT 60 on my US Battery L16 bank - I use setting #8 (custom settings) and set my absorb voltage at 15.2v per 12v battery with an absorption charge length of 2 hours 30 mins - I ramped up gradually from 14.8v based on my observations on performance - you can easily use a crossover network cable to make an Ethernet connection to the controller and then perform any custom settings you choose through their free to download MSView software - I even monitor the system directly over Ethernet though I have the TS-M-2 display meter - I hate that dim yellow screen grin

By and by I recommend you dial up your voltage above 14.7volts except your electrolyte SG at full charge is below 1.275 and you don't go below 30% DoD - you don't have to go as high as 15.4volts, 15.1v or 15.2volts is a good place although as you noted 15.4v is recommended for the older generation L16s - I think the SGs on the newer L16s are lower so they may not need as high as 15.4v to keep them happy.

Some of what I said are not supported by manufacturer recommendations but based on experience and field testing - if you research the foreign online forums you will see a lot of people in support of higher voltages just as others will warn you to stay within manufacturer limits.

In the end you will have to decide whether or not to take the plunge after doing your research.
Very many thanks for availing me the wealth of your experience!

@Gurus in the house and users of Trojan L16 batteries.

I have 16 pieces of Trojan L16 batteries, which I have been using for almost two years. I am completely offgrid. I am little concerned that the setpoint (#6 Settings) I am using to charge the batteries using Morningstar 150V 60A controller, may not be charging the batteries adequately. Although this matches the settings recommended by Trojan, but I have my reservations about that and I wonder if the setpoint (#7 Settings) which is designed by Morningstar for specifically for L16 batteries may be more suitable.

What is your take on this? Kindly share your experiences with the batteries generally, and the settings you have found that charge the batteries most adequately.

My good people, anyone willing to share their PV generation in the last few weeks since the rains started?

I am getting just about 30% of installed capacity at peak which gives me some concern. Most times, a miserly 10-15%... and it's not raining!

Thanks o!
What direction are your panels facing and what is the degree of inclination of the panels?

The above questions are very important and I came to appreciate the importance about 2 months ago. My panels are installed, facing south, which is not a problem. That is actually the appropriate direction. The angle or degree of inclination should be between 6 and 10 degrees. The difference in performance of properly inclined panels and those not so inclined is much more significant than I appreciated before now.

I observed not long ago that the direction from which sun rises had changed significantly to the extent that my panels installed at about 30 - 45 degrees inclination were almost backing the rays as the sun is rising and would remain almost like that for the day. It was then I actually noticed that my angles were wrong. So I dropped the panels to 6 degrees inclination and guess what? My 5.3kw pv arrays which before then would take till about 5.00 to 6.00 pm to fully charge my batteries, can now complete the charge at about between 2 and 3 pm! A difference of about 3 hours! There is a significant improvement in the yield. My batteries now float almost everyday, even when it rains sometime in the day. The beauty of 6 degrees is that whichever direction the sun takes, the panels have complete and direct supply as long as there are no shades!

One more thing, You need to test your panels to ensure that they are all functioning.

Also from experience, my second pv array of 2.25kw which is supposed to yield at least 3/4 or 2/3 of the yield of the first pv array of 3.06kw, was actually yielding less than half of the the first array. So I had to troubleshoot and in the process discovered that one of the panels in one string was not functioning. Fortunately, it could be repaired, which was done and the thenceforth the panels started performing to expectation! The effect of such a problem is that the entire string (in my own case made up of 3 panels) would not contribute any yield to the production of the array. So I had two strings functioning in a 3-string array.

So you need to do an audit of the system to discover where the problem may be.

wow, am more encouraged now.
it now remains who would be the first to install this in a fresh build,
it would be a radical departure from the usual, and many nay sayers would be on overdrive to discourage one.
i think i wud put it on my sumo tank stand, or many above the sumo tanks, to prevent shading

who has done a new build and incorporated this?, come gimme tips
Mine is actually on a new building and central hot water supply system was already provided for in the piping design.

I did not have much problem with the installation because the building has a concrete flat roof and I just installed it on the roof.

It can be installed anywhere you have direct unhindered sunlight to it even if it is not close to the tank stand. All that is required is to pipe inlet supply to it and pipe outlet to the house and the rest is for it to work. It can be on its own tank stand, which however, should be below the level of the water supply tank stand, so that gravity can still supply water to the water heater.

Note that having it above your tank stand would mean that you will require a pump to send water to it, or pump directly from the sumo to it. However, this may not function well as the tank may run dry, except of course you automate the pumping which may deplete your batteries if it happens frequently at night when there is no sunlight. The design of the solar water heater is such that once water is going into the house from the outlet, the inlet will automatically open to let in water to fill up the tank. You will achieve better result if water supply to it comes from your overhead tank that will not require power.

Performing just as it did last year, when we had 10 days of continuous rainy/cloudy days, we still had hot water with the few hours of sunlight that comes up daily. We had hot water all throughout. The only difference is that it would not be as hot as in the dry season, but good enough to still mix it otherwise you can scald your skin!
