The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Thursday, shunned the invitation extended to him to appear before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. He has consequently issued a statement, stating that the lawmakers should take their argument before the court instead of summoning him.

2. The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday, ordered its members worldwide to monitor the movements and whereabouts of the retired Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase. The group said the aim is to ensure Arase’s arrest and arraignment in the International Criminal Court, ICC, as soon as an international bench warrant is issued for his arrest over the killing of its members. This order was contained in a press statement signed by IPOB’s spokesman, Dr. Clifford Iroegbu.

3. Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has insisted that Zenith bank majorly funded his campaign, asking the bank to come up with an official statement on the matter. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the governor said the bank’s statement should not be as feeble as the one being peddled in the media so that he can begin the
second stage of his revelations on the bank.

Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Colonel Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd) on Thursday told a Federal High Court in Abuja that he is being punished by some persons at the highest level of power in the country for perceived grievances they hold against him while in active military service many years ago. Dasuki who did not name any particular person said that the punishment being meted on him was unfortunate as it was borne out of mere vendetta.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday advised the general public to watch out for some unscrupulous individuals who now parade the streets posing as representatives of the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, and extorting money from persons under investigation, promising them a soft-landing and assurances that their cases would be closed. A statement by the commission said Magu will never send anybody to act in the capacity.

The Federal Government on Thursday scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, post UTME, for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions, adding that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after the one conducted by JAMB.
Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who stated this in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, said all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

While expressing confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Adamu said: “As far as I am concerned the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it.

“If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.”

The Minister, however, requested JAMB to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.

UNIBEN develops software for CBT

University of Benin, UNIBEN has developed indigenous software for the conduct of its Computer Based Testing, CBT for all examinations in the university. Explaining the effort of the institution on ICT, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. F.F.O. Orumwense said "The software for CBT was indigenously developed by the University of Benin ICT Unit, making the university the first University in Nigeria to develop and use it to conduct the examinations."

According to him, The enhancement of the ICT Unit has also been extended to various units and departments of the university with the provision of the E-learning multimedia teaching programs which will aid the advancement of teaching and learning process.

He said that the innovation has further prompted the university to approve the establishment of a paperless senate meeting and result presentation powered by online application using Intranet connectivity.

Orumwense disclosed that the administration of the university has linked all faculties, units/hostels with fibre optics for the enhancement of internet connectivity 24/7, adding, "the unit is also equipped with a video conferencing room with latest infrastructure that can conveniently seat 20 people."

The major administrative sectors, he explained has been approved by Management for computerization of the Registry and Bursary Department for seamless operations as well as to enhance the service delivery and the growth of the university.

Meanwhile, he said that in compliance with the spirit of computer based entrance examinations being advocated by JAMB, UNIBEN has effectively keyed into the initiative as its Post-UTME and PUDE examinations are now full computer based.

The computer based test software, he added has been used to conduct the 2015/2016 Jamb examination which received commendations from staff as well as relevant stakeholders and observers.

"The ICT Unit has helped to conduct examinations in other institutions within Nigeria. The Ekehuan Campus was not left out in the entire technological enhancement; it received support from the university administration and global com. Nigeria in the completion of faculties which house the Linkage of the NOC room with Fibre Optics to help the improvement of internet services on the campus. The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to donate an ICT building to the unit which is to house about 100 systems.
