The State Chairman of Kautal Hore, a Fulani socio-cultural group said that it would establish a football association for nomadic children in Jigawa State. The State Chairman, Alhaji Umar Dubantu made this statement in Dutse, yesterday. Dabantu said that the establishment of the football association for the nomads will motivate and encourage Fulani youths to actively participate in sporting activities, particularly at the grassroots. He noted that the group would soon begin to seek talents among the nomads across the state. Kautal Hore plans to select at least one player each from the state’s 27 Local Government Areas. He also said that the project will not only lead to the discovery of talents but will improve the development of football in the state. The Jigawa State Chairman of Kautal Hore also stated that the project will bring about social inclusion for young and youthful Fulanis in all aspects of life, like their counterparts in the country. “There are many talented Fulani players in the state and these children are not only good at playing football but other sports. However, no attempt is being made to discover them. “For instance, there one is 14-year-old Fulani boy that is very good at lifting heavy things, in fact, he can lift heavy things that are unexpected for him at his age. So this boy, and many others, can be discovered and groomed as our future weightlifters. “Therefore, this is what we plan to do, in order to discover and bring out such talented Fulani boys to the world so that they will be our shining stars and future champions in years to come,” the chairman said. https://punchng.com/we-plan-to-establish-a-football-association-for-nomadic-children-fulani-group/ |
A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro, has said the ratio of lecturers in Nigerian universities to students is very low. Bamiro said this was one of the reasons why no Nigerian university was ranked among the best 100 in the world. The former VC mentioned this in a lecture he delivered at the symposium organised by Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ibadan branch, in honour of Emmanuel Oladeji, who is regarded as one of the pioneers modern engineers in Nigeria. A copy of the lecture titled, ‘Engineering: A panacea for economic development’ was made available to our correspondent in Ibadan on Monday. Bamiro explained that Nigerian universities were overpopulated by students and they had few academic staff. The former vice chancellor stressed that lecturers in Nigerian universities are too overburdened. According to him, this is the main reason why many lecturers do not know all their students. Bamiro said apart from the ratio of students to academic staff, number of facilities, number of accredited courses, students performance, employability and contribution to economy were some of the factors being used to rate universities in the world. He explained further that inability of Nigerian universities to meet these standards were responsible for their exclusion in the list of the best in the world. Bamiro said, “Academic staff in Nigerian universities are over burdened. We are overburdened. The ratio of academic staff to students is over 30 students to a lecturer. That is why we are not among the best 100. “What is the ratio of academic staff and students in the universities that are rated as one of the best 100? The ratio in universities like Harvard, Oxford is ratio 1 to 5. Five students per lecturer. The class that has the highest number of students will be 20 students. So, why will they not know their students. “But, what we need to do in Nigeria is to follow the patten. All the stakeholders must work to achieve this. The critical stakeholders, NUC, NABTEB, BOI, ITF must be involved. “ https://punchng.com/lecturers-ratio-to-students-in-nigerian-varsities-too-low-ex-ui-vc/ |
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has said that the joint committee that was set up by the federal government to tackle violation of consumer rights and unfair practices in the money lending industry will shut down illegal businesses at the commencement of its enforcement. The Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. Recall that earlier in November 2021, the federal government moved to check some of the illegal, unwholesome and unfair practices in the money lending industry with the setting up of a joint committee to address the situation. The acts were fast becoming a dominant and abusive practice targeting some of the most vulnerable in society. The committee that received over 500 electronic mails and information in respect of the investigation was expected to through their activities lead efforts to address multiple potentially dubious conducts of certain money lenders, otherwise known as loan sharks. The joint committee is made up of representatives from FCCPC, the CBN, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Irukera said that the committee would also be writing interim regulations, which money lending companies must comply with. He said: “The joint committee is meeting and agreeing on how to proceed but I can say that two of the entities of the joint committee will be going on the field and doing enforcement work very shortly. “They will be closing down businesses and engaging App stores to shut down certain applications that are infringing and abusive. `We are also going to be writing interim regulations and some basic information for all these money lenders to provide information so that people will know who they are. Some of them are just Apps that we do not even know who the promoters are. So we are going to provide certain frameworks for them to comply with before doing business.’’ Electricity, banking, aviation tops 2021 consumer complaints chart The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says the electricity sector has again topped its 2021 consumer-related complaints chart just like in 2020. The Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, who disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja said banking-related complaints were following closely as second on the chart. Irukera explained that aviation and telecommunication-related complaints were next on the chart. Irukera said that the commission received and completed the processes of no fewer than 32,000 consumer-related complaints in 2021, with 80% of them being resolved. He said: “For the sectors that received the highest complaints, we have electricity, banking then aviation is now competing with telecommunications on the third place. https://dailytrust.com/fg-to-shut-down-money-lending-businesses-over-violations |
