I think I'm guilty of No. 5! |
Written By The WebPamphlet The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist, located just below the rib cage on each side of the spine. Every single day, the kidneys filter about 120-150 quarts of urine, waste and excess fluid to prevent the buildup of waste in the body. The kidneys keep electrolyte levels stable and produce hormones that help regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells and keep bones strong. If the kidneys sound pretty important, that’s because they are. Healthy kidneys are vital to keeping everything in the body running smoothly. Damage to the kidneys can often go unnoticed, so it’s important to take preventative measures to ensure kidney health. Here’s a list of eight ( common habits that you might not realize are putting a lot of pressure on your kidneys and may lead to serious kidney damage over time.ENJOY and SHARE! 1. Not drinking enough water One of the important functions of the kidneys is to filter blood and get rid of toxins and waste materials that can harm the body. When you don’t drink enough water, those toxins and waste materials start to accumulate, eventually causing severe damage. 2. Consuming too much salt The body does need sodium to work properly, but an excess of sodium can cause damage. Most people consume too much, which can raise blood pressure and put stress on the kidneys. 3. Holding urine This might sound odd, but almost everyone does it. The urge often comes during a car ride, in the middle of a phone call, or when there isn’t a bathroom nearby. Holding in urine on a regular basis increases pressure, which can lead to kidney failure and kidney stones. When nature calls, it’s best to listen. 4. Taking too much coffee Coffee contains caffeine, and caffeine can raise blood pressure and put extra stress on the kidneys, just as salt can. Over time, excess coffee consumption (or caffeine consumption, such as energy drinks) can lead to kidney damage. 5. Consuming too much protein sourced from animals Consuming an excess of animal protein (especially red meat) increases the metabolic load on the kidneys. The more animal protein one consumes, the harder the kidneys have to work, which can cause stress and lead to kidney damage. 6. Taking too much alcohol Consuming too much alcohol doesn't only damage your kidney but also damages your liver as well. Most people enjoy a glass of wine or a beer here and there, but more than one drink several times a week can raise the risk of kidney damage. Alcohol puts stress on the kidneys and the liver. 7. Abusing painkillers Both over-the-counter and prescription drugs are commonly taken for aches and pains without concern about the harmful side effects that may arise. Excessive use or abuse of painkillers can lead to severe kidney and liver damage. 8. Depriving yourself of sleep Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to many health problems, including kidney disease. The body works while sleeping to repair kidney tissue that may be damaged, so depriving the body of sleep makes it harder to heal. Mr Nicholas Tofowomo has rejected the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission declaring election in Ondo South Senatorial District inconclusive. Tofowomo is the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo South Senatorial District in the last Saturday Presidential and National Assembly elections. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Tofowomo polled 79,029 votes against his closest rival. Sen. Yele Omogunwa of the All Progressives Congress who scored 51,993. Prof. Kayode Onifade, the INEC Returning Officer for Ondo South declared the election inconclusive over what he described as various irregularities in the election. He also cited the cancelled votes of 28,047, which was higher than the leading margin of 27,036 votes as another reason for the decision to declare the election inconclusive. However, in a statement on Monday by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Nicholas Tofowomo Campaign Organisation, Mr Olumide Akinrionlola, Tofowomo condemned the decision. The PDP candidate alleged that INEC in conjunction with the APC were on course to subvert the will of the people of Ondo South. Tofowomo said that Onifade was unable to give a satisfactory account of the Polling Units where various irregularities occurred until he (Onifade) got to Akure. He noted that three House of Representatives members were declared winners in the same areas where the senatorial elections were held simultaneously, adding that something was fishy on the decision of INEC on the issue. The PDP candidate urged INEC, to as a matter of urgency, declare him as the winner of the senatorial seat without delay. He, however, urged his supporters to be calm and avoid taking laws into their hands. “We reject in it is entirety the inconclusive decision of INEC for the Ondo South Senatorial election because it is a ploy by INEC and APC to subvert the will of the electorate. “We challenge INEC to give a satisfactory account of areas of irregularities because the three members of House Representatives were declared winners of the same election held simultaneously in the same areas. “It is worrisome for INEC Returning Officer to say he can only give names of troubled areas responsible for the inconclusiveness when he gets to Akure. “I hereby urge our supporters to be calm and ensure they are law-abiding because our victory cannot be shortchanged,” Tofowomo said.
