Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson said Sunday no Muslim should be president of the United States, adding a new twist to a controversy roiling the party’s White House nominating race.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Carson, a retired brain surgeon who often refers to his own deep Christian faith, was asked whether a president’s religion should matter.

“I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem,” he said.

Asked whether he believes Islam is consistent with the US constitution, he responded: “No, I don’t. I do not.”

“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” he added

The issue abruptly surfaced in recent days when Republican frontrunner Donald Trump let pass unchallenged a questioner’s assertion that US President Barack Obama was a Muslim.

Trump later said he was not “morally obligated” to defend Obama against the man’s unfounded claim, but his handling of the incident drew fire from Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, the White House and some Republican rivals of the billionaire real estate mogul.

Carson, who slipped to third among Republican presidential contenders in opinion polls Sunday after running second to Trump for weeks, said he believed Obama was born in the United States and is a Christian.
His remarks predictably sparked ire from Democrats.

Senator Bernie Sanders, a presidential hopeful, said on the campaign trail in New Hampshire that he was “disappointed” in Carson, who is black.

“It took us too long to overcome the prejudice against electing a Catholic or an African-American president. People should be elected to office based on their ideas, not their religion or the color of their skin,” Sanders said.

Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a congresswoman from Florida, said it was “hard to understand what’s so difficult about supporting an American citizen’s right to run for president.”

“Of course a Muslim, or any other American citizen, can run for president, end of story. To think otherwise is not only harmful to our political process, but it elevates and validates discrimination in this country,” she said, calling for an apology.

Peter Obi has caught the bug of emergency philanthropist, and has been going round schools in Anambra State telling the management what he did for them and demanding photo-Ops with the students. The drill according to insiders is that his aides convinced him that he has to remain relevant through public philanthropy hence the birth of the N1-2 Million Cheque presentation to select schools.

Peter suddenly realized that having tasted power, he could not afford a minute away from the lime-light. Hence he goes round schools in Anambra like an emergency philanthropist, to inspect projects and take pictures, under the watch of a substantive governor. Many would recall that Mr. Peter Obi cried and shouted over the same shenanigans allegedly carried out by Senator Chris Ngige who was said to have inspected roads in the early days of Peter’s tenure.

Apart from his school tours, Mr. Obi has upped the ante with his almost 2-year old story of a phantom ‘N75bn cashý’ he allegedly left in the coffers of Anambra. Peter never talked about liabilities, the multiple projects he awarded till last day, six thousand teachers recruited without posting and the Local government election he remembered after eight years, all few day to handover. That’s the proxy warrior in Peter.

Another question is can Peter sustain his new found love for school tours and false philanthropy, not to mention the new PDP dance drama in Anambra? But haven been bitten by the political bug, Peter is beginning to display some desperation for control like never before; having failed to maximize the opportunity to build a pan-Igbo platform and galvanize people in his home state by choosing the part of the minimalist, Peter now has a lot of time on his hands to distract others who dare. Unfortunately, he is watching another person excelling where he once played court and appears uncomfortable. However it is late in the day because he can’t be governor again. That is the burden of Mr. Peter Obi.

In his days as the governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha, otherwise known as DSP, was fondly referred to as the Governor-General of Izon Nation, because he presided over the only state with entirely Ijaw extraction and was seen as the leader of the struggle for the proverbial Resource Control in the Niger Delta. The woman, simply identified as Pelesia Saoke from Furfal village is said to have tied the victim’s hands, flogged her and then poured about a litre of kerosene on her before setting her on fire.

Likuyani OCPD Meshack Kiptum (Pictured above) confirmed the incident and said the victim was rescued by neighbors who responded in time and saved her before informing the police who took her to Kitale Hospital.

“The-14-year old girl is undergoing treatment as her private parts were burnt and she needs counselling. The mother has gone into hiding but police are surveying the area and she will be arrested soon with cooperation from the public,” Kiptum said.

The officer urged parents to avoid imposing such inhumane punishment on their children but look for other means of punishment.

The victim’s brother, Bonventure Okoth said her mother came back home around 6 pm in the evening and found her elder sister frying the maize flour when she burnt her.

“My mother tied my elder sister’s hands, beat her before she soaked her with paraffin and burnt her before she went into hiding. She said she was punishing my sister for misusing flour,” Okoth said.

Neighbours say this is not the first incidence as the woman is fond of beating up her children and threaten to set them ablaze.

The incident, according to an eyewitness, occurred at about 7p.m. at the foot of Upper Iweka flyover bridge by Ezeiweka Road Junction, along Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha, Anambra State.

At least six roadside jeans and T-shirts sellers were, Saturday evening, feared dead as they fell into a drain and were swept away by flood during a downpour.

The eyewitness said the traders were doing their businesses on planks laid across the Sakamori gutter, when the planks suddenly broke and they fell in.

Passers-by, who witnessed the incident, cried helplessly as no one dared jump into the rampaging flood. The bodies of the traders had not been recovered and no one
could establish their identities.

A source hinted that traders had for a long time converted the Sakamori area into a roadside clothes market, probably due to their inability to pay for a shop in any of the markets in the commercial city.

However, Police Area Commander for Onitsha, Mr. PhilipEzekiel, told newsmen, yesterday, that he was not aware of the incident, adding that the scene was within Awada Police Division.

Also, the Divisional police Officer at Awada, Mr. Joseph Dimale, told newsmen on phone that he was not also aware of the incident.

Dimale added that he would send his men to the scene to ascertain the true position of things.

The Publicity Secretary of Anambra Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, AMATAS, Uzor A. Uzor, described the incident as very unfortunate and regretted that most of the traders in Onitsha do not like to move into the market, where there were vacant shops, but preferred to do business on the roadsides.

Immediate former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that no anti-corruption agency in the country can not probe him at the moment.

'Nobody Can Probe Me Yet' Says Rotimi Amaechi
Amaechi's former Chief of Staff, Tony Okocha, told Punch that the ex-governor was not afraid of ICPC or the EFCC as long as their probe was not a witch-hunt sponsored by the opposition.

But anybody who wants to probe Amaechi must first vacated a court order stopping the investigation or probe of any Rivers Stat Government official.

He also said that Governor Nyesom Wike was a beneficiary of such order from the court, adding that until the court injunction was vacated, it would be illegal for the ICPC to probe his boss.

“I have always said that Amaechi is not afraid of the EFCC or the ICPC as long as such probe is not a witch-hunt. Again, there is a court order that the EFCC or other agency like it cannot probe any government official in the state. Wike is a beneficiary of that court order.

"Until that court request is abandoned, the ICPC or the EFCC have no privilege to explore Amaechi. Since what they are going to explore is his (Amaechi's) exercises while in government, the EFCC and the ICPC don't have such right to do as such taking into account the standing court request," Okocha said.

Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu who is the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has disclosed that oil theft would be eradicated in the next eight months as the corporation has put in place measures to check the menace and bring perpetrators to book.

Speaking at a one-day seminar on Security in the Gulf of Guinea, organized by the Gusau Institute in Abuja, Dr Kachikwu said the fight to stop oil theft was not only for the NNPC but also all Nigerians, as the effect of crude oil theft was on all Nigerians.

According to the NNPC boss, some of these measures include the introduction of drones to monitor the pipelines as well as patrol the country’s coastal waters; equipping and increasing the capabilities of the security services to carry out their responsibilities and the engagement of communities to police pipelines in their areas.

While promising to introduce transparency in running the NNPC, Dr Kachikwu revealed that the PPMC would be broken up into several companies with one solely in charge of pipelines while another would be in charge of products at the depots

The Anambra state House of Assembly on Tuesday asked the state Governor, Willie Obiano, to immortalise a former Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili who once also headed NAFDAC.

The motion to immortalise Akunyili was moved by the member representing Orumba-South constituency, Nikky Ugochuikwu, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development.

Ugochukwu explained that immortalisation of Prof. Akunyili would spur other citizens of the state to be fully committed in the pursuit of excellence in their various areas of endeavor. Akunyili died of cancer in an Indian hospital on June 7, 2014. And we totally AGREE with Nikky Ugochuikwu.

It was not easy at all because we were living in an uncompleted building that the father built before he died. We had terrible experience with tenants even there was a time she was beaten.

Maybe she did not want to break your heart?

Yes, you know she said that she had to visit the psychologist. You know many of them like that will not be able to tell anyone, maybe not to frustrate me.

But if she had told you, what would you have done then?

As at that time, I might feel disturbed but by God’s grace, you know she is a wonderful child, I would have felt very bad. As at that particular time, I have not got my anointing, I was ordained as a Pastor in 1991, but I would have felt disturbed, maybe God would have given me a message.

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has took a swipe at a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, saying the ex-minister should be jailed and not be talking on the streets.

Oshiomhole also said that the ex-minister was afraid of being probed by President Muhammadu Buhari over the multi-billion naira East-West Road contract.

The governor said, “Is it not a shame that Orubebe, who should be cooling his heels in jail for that failed plot to truncate the country’s democracy, has now found a convoluted voice?"


Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Peter Okhiria, Oshiomhole said that Orubebe was afraid of being probed for the amnesty programme he supervised under Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“We are not surprised at the timing of Orubebe’s latest outburst. It is, no doubt, unconnected with the planned probe by President Muhammadu Buhari of the billions of naira allocated to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, even as the East-West Road remains in bad shape and the probe of the fleecing of amnesty funds under his watch.”

Oshiomhole was reacting to a recent statement credited to Orubebe, where he reportedly described him as an ingrate for being critical of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“Does Orubebe really think Nigerians are fools? Does he truly believe Nigerians have forgotten so soon the ignoble role he played in his attempt to truncate the release of the election results and announcement of the eventual winner of that election, a move which could have plunged the nation into another civil war?

“We are aware that Orubebe, the perpetual noise maker has raised the decibel of his noise a notch higher so that he would have a ready-made defence of witch-hunt if he is indicted in the planned probe of amnesty funds,” Oshiomhole said.

A Chinese state-possessed engineering company, Sinoma has marked an arrangement worth $4.3bn to construct Cement processing plants in Nigeria in association with Dangote Cement organization. The chines organization likewise plans to assemble seven plants over the mainland and one in Nepal.
The new factories are expected to add around 25 million tonnes to Dangote’s cement company which currently has the capacity of 45 million tonnes.

Mr. Dangote who revealed that Hh is keeping a close eye on China’s economic problems and the ensuing lower oil price said although his company is affected by the economic problems in China, the impact is not overwhelming. “Of course we are affected,” he said, “but we are not badly affected because we are not 100% in oil.

“We are a fully diversified company. So today if oil is doing badly it doesn’t mean we are doing badly and that’s the good thing about diversification.” Africa’s economies have been hit hard by the fall in commodity prices but many are seeing a boom in infrastructure, for which cement is vital.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who chaired a special committee set up by the National Economic Council, NEC, in this interview with Vanguard revealed that Goodluck Jonathan administration plundered the nation’s economy despite the defence being put forward by the former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

As a matter of fact, the Governor who is a member of the NEC made further disclosures, revealing that under the watch of Okonjo-Iweala, the Federal Government spent the sum of N140billion on consultancy for the Second Niger bridge. He said the money was sourced from the Sovereign Wealth Fund, SWF, illegally, asserting that the Igbos must hold the former President responsible since such amount was expended with no bridge on ground.

He insists that the nation cannot succeed unless people are prosecuted, stressing that "If Nigerians know what these people did, they will stone them to death, jungle justice. 700 million dollars gone on second Niger bridge without any bridge to show."


Oshiomhole, visibly angry, said he may not be able to reveal as much as he would have liked but maintained that if Nigerians knew what actually went down during Jonathan’s reign, they would stone him and his cabinet members on the street.

Sir, National Assembly approved the 75million dollar loan to Edo State, but the PDP opposed the loan deal saying the state is already heavily indebted, how would you react to that?

Apapa Road: The traffic on this road is so bad that it is now a thing of national interest. People who work in this area often sleep in their respective offices for the week to return home at the weekend all because of the traffic on this road. The reason for this is basically because there is only one major linking road to Apapa.

The traffic gets even worse when tanker drivers decide to go park their tankers on the bridge instead of their designated park.

3rd Mainland Bridge: The large number of people who work on the Island and live on the mainland is the major reason for this terrible traffic. The fact that people can spend several hours in this traffic mean they’ve had to learn to leave their homes as early as 4am or 5am in order to meet up with their very early resumption time.

Ikorodu Road: This road is the only major road that links central Lagos to Ikorodu, a fast developing area on the outskirt of Lagos. The fact that it’s on the outskirt of Lagos makes housing in the area relatively cheap compared to what you’ll get in central Lagos. Because of the cheap housing, most Lagosians who work very far away from the area prefer to live there rather than live in places closer to their work place where they’ll have to pay a whole lot more money for accommodation. Because of this among other reason, Ikorodu is very populated and giving the fact that there is only one major road linking Ikorodu to central Lagos, the road often have a lot of cars plying it every day, hence producing horrible traffic congestion everybody complain bitterly about. Even when living Ikorodu during week days as early as 5am, you don’t escape the traffic.

Abeokuta Express Way: It is no news that people who live in places in Ogun state work in Lagos state. Because it’s their daily job, these people have to make the long journey down to Lagos everyday; this means they often have to live their homes as early as 4am to beat the traffic. Leaving home as early as 4am does not always mean they will get lucky with escaping the traffic.

Berger Road: This road leads all the way to Mowe and Ibafo in Ogun state. The relatively cheap housing in these areas also makes it a densely populated area, mostly people who work in Lagos. The high population in this area is one of the major reasons for the stand still traffic often encountered on this road. If there was another good road leading to these areas, maybe the story about the traffic would be a whole lot different. Since there isn’t, the horrible traffic tale on the road remains.

The Acting Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Aminat Zakari, has said that the commission is awaiting reports of the police investigations into bribery allegations against some resident electoral commissioners and other staff of the commission.

'Stop Calling me Buhari’s in-law' says INEC Acting Chairman Mrs Zakari

Zakari, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, said INEC was waiting for security agents to provide tangible evidence against those involved.

The acting INEC Chairman, who said she had the capacity to be substantive INEC Chairman despite being a woman, denied claims that she is President Muhammadu Buhari’s in-law.

Zakari confirmed that security agents and INEC had received petitions against some RECs, but refused to give the number and identities of the commissioners involved.

Reacting to bribery allegations against some RECs, she stated, “Everybody makes allegations about bribery, or about somebody being bribed. Anybody can make the allegation, unless it’s proven by the security agencies or the court, INEC does not take action.

Speaking on those that had been picked up by the security agencies, he stated, “Unless they (security agencies) give us anything in writing, we just leave it as it is until their investigations are over.”

Zakari, who dismissed an insinuation that she could not effectively perform as INEC Chairman because of her gender, said she was not desperate to retain the job in a substantive capacity.

She stated, “I am a human being first. I have the capacity. If I have the ability to do something and there are ways and means of achieving your targets. You don’t rely on your brain alone. You have other people to rely on. I have done administration. I have worked in organisations that demand accountability.”

The INEC acting chairman explained that she was not appointed commissioner in INEC by Buhari, adding that former President Goodluck Jonathan had appointed her.

“I can’t say the General (Buhari) is my in-law. I am not married to his son. My daughter is not married to him. That is what I understand about being an in-law, but obviously, in life, you have acquaintances, people you have known,” she said.

Adding that Buhari was not known for nepotism, she said, “God decides who becomes (a) leader; if God decides I would be the one to continue, I will have to do my best.”

She stated, “I did not lobby for it (acting chairmanship). I had packed all my things out of INEC; I wanted to leave on the 30th (of June).

“I was just called on my way home as the chairman (Jega) handed over to Ambassador Wali. When I was called that the Head of Service was looking for me and I said, ‘what for?’ and I just continued driving. I was by Bullet House by the time I got the call and I just continued driving.

She also disclosed that the commission had sent some staff from its headquarters to Rivers State to assist in sorting out documents demanded by the state electoral tribunal.

The crisis between two ex-governors of Lagos State, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr Babatunde Fashola deepened on Friday with reports that loyalists of both gladiators have drawn up battle plans, even as stakeholders in both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Lagos State are said to have waded in, calling for a truce.


A former member of the Lagos State Executive Council who did not want to be named, told Saturday Tribune on Friday that “some elders are planning a peace meeting between the duo.”

Investigations revealed that forces loyal to Tinubu felt incensed by the statement issued by Fashola on Thursday in which he insinuated that corruption allegations were being pinned on him by those opposed to his getting a federal appointment, a veiled reference to Tinubu and the incumbent governor, Akinwumi Ambode.

“The coming days will be interesting,” an aide to a chieftain of the APC close to both leaders told Saturday Tribune on Friday.

While the Tinubu camp is said to have vowed to fight on, “ to teach the former governor a lesson,” the Fashola side of the divide, according to a source, “is determined to ensure that his integrity is not tainted by those who are jealous of his ascendancy in the polity.”

Both sides, however, on Friday refrained from taking direct shots at each other. Tinubu’s spokesman, Mr Sunday Dare told Saturday Tribune when contacted by phone on Friday afternoon that he had just arrived in the country and would need time to get briefings from his boss before reacting to the statement from Fashola while Ambode’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna did not answer repeated calls made to his telephone line.

Dare later sent a text message at 6:30pm that he would call back soon. He did not.

However, an aide of Ambode who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our reporter that it was too simplistic for anybody to think that the government, headed by Ambode, was behind the ongoing corruption charge campaign against former Governor Fashola in order to rubbish his record of achievements while in office for eight years.

“Ambode is not interested in the smear campaign against Fashola, it is a non- issue. It is too simplistic to suggest that, it is left for people to find out who is doing this. I can tell you that government is not involved. It is not possible for government to have a hand in that.

“The governor is a pragmatic person and ready to move on by restructuring the state,” the close source said.

Fashola is currently in the eye of the storm as a group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), has dragged him before the anti- graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for his investigation on an alleged scam over a contract for the upgrade of his personal website at a cost of N78million.

The former governor, has, however, set the record straight, declaring that the state government, through the procurement office, did not disclose the details of the website upgrade to include some other aspects making up the entire contracts sum.

Fashola, who denied having children outside wedlock apart from the three he adopted following the DANA plane crash, also denied involvement in the National Assembly crisis, saying that he only landed in the country on the day of the crisis.

This is as our reporter learnt that Fashola, who served for eight years as governor, might have incurred the wrath of a lot of people within the APC and outside it, some of who felt he was “too arrogant” and now wanted to take their own pound of flesh.

Other sources said Tinubu is determined to block the chances of Fashola from becoming a minister in the yet- to- be formed cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari due to his alleged “new found independence.”

This, according to a source, might have prompted Fashola to declare in his published statement that he was not looking for a job, stressing that “For those who still wish to remain in the mud, they should look in the mirror.

For those who wish to throw mud at me, they should look at their own hands. As for me, I have moved on. My job is done,” even as he threw a broadside at his opponents that, “When you wrestle with a pig, the pig gets happy and you get dirty.”

Another source even disclosed that “Tinubu’s supporters could even be the ones fighting back because of the perceived ill- treatment Tinubu suffered at the hands of Fashola while he was governor of the state.”
