I drove straight into a gutter. It took me a fortune to get my Dad's car out of it...lol |
Better take the job right away. What is the essence of earning a degree if it is not about getting a job? You have the option of doing the masters latter; I doubt it if you can guarantee yourself a job in your own time...a word is enough for the wise!! |
deandavid: i have some questions bothering me sir, can a second class lower graduate of microbiology apply for scholarship overseas? I have an incomplete o level waec result and a complete o level neco result, my question is can i use only neco result or should i combine the 2 results or probably go write another fresh waec examination. Thank u.It is a tough call but it is not impossible. A 2:2 should not stop you from achieveing your dreams, you only need to know how to get around it. I would advice you to go for a masters degree in Nigeria first. I am aware that University of ibadan would take a 2:2 for a masters degree - i know people with 2:2 who did their masters there. Then you should look at other exams that could help to boost your profile and make you applications really strong: GRE, TOEFL, GMAT etc. You can then look at applying for PhD scholarships abroad. Remember, dreams never die. dont stop until you reach your dreams. Persistence breaks resistance! |

I would refer you to my answer to similar questions in this link: https://www.nairaland.com/907735/possibilities-mph#10569226 |
You have asked a rather difficult one here. what do i advice? I would try to do justice to it as much as I can. First, my experience with MPH is that it is better to specialize in one of the streams at the masters level. so you should be looking at Health administration, Health Economics, Epidemiology, International health, environmental health ETC. this should be guided by the type of jobs you intend to aim for after your MPH. Just to let you know that Health economists are really on demand at the moment on a global scale. second, one of the main challenges with young people is lack of experience and most MPH jobs look for people with experience. this leaves most people in a "chicken and egg" situation. one of the things you could do to get around it is to do unpaid internships. I am aware that internship opportunities abound with "West African Health Organisation", also you could have a look at WHO, i am sure they offer unpaid internships too. Alternatively you could be looking at the federal ministry of health - i gathered there is a ministry of Public health after all. so you could find out from there if you could do an unpaid internship - i am pretty sure they will be glad to have someone bringing in some skills at no cost. for someone pursuing a career in public health potential employers include 1. International organisations : CDC, WHO, UNICEF, WAHO 2. Private organisations: Clinton foundation, Doctors without borders etc 3. Research jobs 4. Academics above all i would advice you to look beyond Nigeria for opportunities. look at the thread I created on scholarship opportunities and see the ones you could explore. I wish you the best in your endeavors! |
University of Ibadan admits "non-MBBS" guys for MPH too. you have to be very realistic with your chances. people talk about jobs with international organisations but i promise you they are extremely difficult to get, really difficult. it is not impossible though. you could look out for chances outside Nigeria too. check this link for scholarship opportunities https://www.nairaland.com/904161/links-scholarships-post-doc-job-opportunities Dont be deceived, public health does not sell like hot cake. that was probably in the past but the market is flooded now with people with MPH degrees (foreign and local). you really have to consider your chances. |
Masters and PhD scholarship in a korean institution. Dealine is 13th April!!! http://grad.inha.ac/english/admission/Scholarships.asp higher degree by research in Australia (masters and PHD) http://scholarships.curtin.edu.au/scholarship.cfm?id=42 higher degree by research in Australia (masters and PHD) http://rmit.com.au/browse;ID=loa1ds2di8cw post-doc in japan http://www.riken.jp/fpr/recruitment.html |
I am aware that UNDP and UN (generally) look out for environmentalists. But my experience with these international jobs is that you have to have a link in the organisations most of the times, there could be exceptions though (remember that exception proves the rule). outside that you would be looking at academic jobs ( and my guess is that they dont pay much really). whats your first degree in? |
the opportunities would depend largely on your location. are you in nigeria? america? europe? where? |

the MDCN have a list of hospitals that have accreditation for internship on their site. just check the list and see if any oil company have their clinics accredited, I doubt it though. I guess the national hospital is still your best bet with respect to financial reward. |
