Shiites (shēˈĪtz) [key] [Arab., shiat Ali, = the party of Ali], the second largest branch of Islam, Shiites currently account for 10%–15% of all Muslims. Shiite Islam originated as a political movement supporting Ali (cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam) as the rightful leader of the Islamic state. The legitimacy of this claim, as initially envisioned by Ali’s supporters, was based on Muhammad’s alleged designation of Ali as his successor, Ali’s righteousness, and tribal customs, given his close relation to the Prophet. Ali’s right passed with his death in 661 to his son Hasan, who chose not to claim it, and after Hasan’s death, to Husein, Ali’s younger son. The evolution into a religious formulation is believed to have been initiated with the martyrdom of Husein in 680 at Karbala (today in Iraq), a traumatic event still observed with fervor in today’s Shiite world on the 10th of the month of Muharram of the Muslim lunar year.

The Shiite focus on the person of the Imam made the community susceptible to division on the issue of succession. The early Shiites, a recognized, if often persecuted, opposition to the central government, soon divided into several factions. The majority of the Shiites today are Twelve-Imam Shiites (notably in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, India, and Pakistan). Others are Zaydis(in Yemen), and the Ismailis (in India, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen). The central belief of Twelve-Imam Shiites is the occultation (or disappearance from view) of the 12th Imam. The 12th Imam is considered to be the only legitimate and just ruler, and therefore no political action taken in his absence can be fruitful. While this position has provided Shiite clerics with the means to survive an often hostile environment, the need for an alternative formulation capable of framing political militancy has fostered activist movements within the Shiite tradition, occasionally leading to dissidence (see Babism).

The religious authority of the Shiite clerics is derived from their role as deputies of the absent 12th Imam; they are as such the recipients of the khums religious tax, a source of substantial economic autonomy. Shiite clerics are often refered to as mullahs and mujtahids. The most prominent clerical position is that of marja al-taqlid. The Shiite clergy does not, however, have a formal hierarchy. The honorific ayat Allah or ayatollah [Arab., = sign of God] is a modern title that does not correspond to any established religious function.

In Iran, the Safavid adoption of a Shiite state religion led to the expansion of clerical involvement in public life, under the tutelage of the political elite. The threat of European colonialism in the 19th cent. presented the opportunity for Shiite activist thought to gain impetus. The attempt of the Pahlevi monarchy in the 20th cent. to curtail the influence of the clerics further strengthened clerical political militancy. Benefiting from a ubiquitous clerical network, and enjoying a credibility unblemished by the corruption within the autocratic regime, Ruhollah Khomeini served as the culmination of the reintegration of activism into the Shiite mainstream. With the Iranian revolution in 1979, the Shiite activist formulation progressed toward stressing the nonsectarian pan-Islamic character of its ideology. Islam, it suggests, should be lived as a tool for the empowerment of the oppressed, not merely as a set of devotional practices; hence the Iranian support for the Palestinian, Afghan, and Lebanese causes.

Earlier today,two people died on the spot in a fatal accident at the Iyana-Itire junction along the Oshodi-Apapa expressway Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the two cars involved in the accident were about to go help another accident victim when a trailer ran into them killing two people. One person actually came out alive.

Yesterday was an amazing day for Senator Buruji Kashamu as his supporters came out in numbers and hosted him and other victorious members of the PDP to a reception on their victory at the Court of Appeal. It should be recalled that the appellate court recently overruled the decision earlier taken by the lower tribunal to sack him.The decision taken by the appellate court reinstated Senator Kashamu and other PDP members' election into the Senate, House of Representatives and the Ogun State House of Assembly.

A number of cars were attacked,dismantled and robbed over-night at Dele Viju close, and Sasere Ajibade Street all at Ilasa Maja, in Lagos. Car headlights, brain box and others removed.

I think Gov Ambode should do something about these attacks because they are becoming worrisome,putting the safety of Lagosians in jeopardy.

Nigerian Troops Kill More Boko Haram Members, Rescue 210 Hostages


Nigerian troops on Wednesday killed 5 Boko Haram terrorists and rescued 210 civilians held captive by the terrorist group.This was revealed by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel S.K. Usman.

According to him,the insurgents were killed at Furkati village, which is located in Geidam a Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe State while the  rescue of the 210 civilians was due to an information received by soldiers that the terrorists were holding hostage the inhabitants of the villages of Ejilije, Bulagaije-lari, Bulagaije-Adamde, and Ajiri.Speaking further,he said the terrorists fled these villages once they learnt the Nigerian military was advancing upon them. 

The rescued citizens were mainly women,children, and the elderly and have since been transferred to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps. According to Colonel Usman, the insurgents planned using the civilians as “human shields” in the event of a military offensive against them. 

4 Dane guns, 4 loaded magazines of G3 riflesan unknown quantity of 7.62mm ammunition,1 Machine Gun barrel, 4  empty canisters of Mortar bombs, a bandolier, and 4 AK-47 rifles were recovered from the insurgents during the operations.

Muma Gee’s Husband Prince Eke Kidnapped, Abductors Threaten To Bury Him Alive By Thursday Evening

It seems kidnapping has turned to a very big business in the country. The more you are known, the greater your chances of being kidnapped.

Prince Eke, a nollywood actor and husband to veteran PH based musician Muma Gee was kidnapped on Saturday in the East on his way back from filming in Asaba, on the Owerri-Port Harcourt road.

According to Diamond Celebrities, the[right][/right] kidnappers have contacted Muma and they are demanding for 15 million naira as ransom. They promised to bury Prince Eke alive by Thursday, this evening if the huge ransom is not paid. .

Muma Gee is pleading with the kidnappers to release her husband unconditionally, saying that Prince Eke is just a Nollywood actor and the family has no means of raising the huge sum of money within the short period of time.

Muma Gee has asked for Nigerians to pray for her husband as they go through this storm.

Star actress and award winning Actress Jackie Appiah who is known for popular movies such as Beyonce, True Lies, Return Of Beyonce and many others turned 32 on Saturday, December 5th. Her fellow actresses/actors, showbiz personalities, fans and others took to their Social media to wish the actress a happy birthday.

She recently purchased a brand new expensive G- Wagon even before her birthday and one couldn’t imagine what she intended to do on her special day, but just like she has been doing for the past ten years and more, the actress has made it a tradition to donate to the less priviledged.

There was a little juice added to that of this year as she brought together two orphanages, the Osu Children’s home and the Teshie Children’s home. The kids enjoyed the whole day with the actress as she gathered the children at the Ghana Disney land(Kids Cottage) in Djorwulu, with the help of her manager Samira Yakubu, where they played with balloons, in bouncers, slides, swings, football, play with Mickey mouse, face painting and many other activities.
There was food, good music, etc as presentation of cash and items(bags of rice, oil, drinks, biscuits, books, toiletries, etc) were made to the two orphanages. The actress is set to launch her Foundation (The Jackie Appiah Foundation) soon. Global Mobile Networks and Golden Tulip Hotel delivered the actress beautifully decorated birthday cakes respectively.
