There has also been a rise in the number of students enrolling for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and Agriculture courses compared to those pursuing arts-related courses.

Statistics from the 2019/2020 placement results by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), which were released in Nairobi on Monday, show that 89,486 students were placed to pursue degree programmes.

While releasing the results, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said 57,687 students (64 per cent) would pursue STEM-related courses while 31,799 students (36 per cent) were placed in arts-related courses.
“In the STEM-related courses, 36,189 students (63 per cent) were male while 21,498 (37 per cent) were female,” Prof Magoha said.

The breakdown of placement in the STEM degree courses shows that Sciences attracted the highest number of students at 29,073, followed by Mathematics (12,881), Technology (9,164), Engineering (4,560) and Agriculture with 2,009.

Vocational training

A total of 58,851 students were placed to pursue technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes. Out of these, 28,024 students (48 per cent) were male and 30,827 (52 per cent) were female.

“Out of the 58,851 students placed, 37,369 (63 per cent) were placed in STEM-related courses while 21,482 (37 per cent) were placed in arts-related courses. In the STEM-related courses, 20,379 students (55 per cent) were male while 16,990 (45 per cent) were female,” Magoha said.
In the TVET sector, Engineering attracted the highest number of students at 15,326 followed by Sciences (11,115), Technology (5,220), Mathematics (3,538) and Agriculture (2,170).
Magoha said the TVET analysis for the 58,851 students who were placed by KUCCPS did not include the 39,542 students who applied directly to the TVET institutions, and whose applications were validated by KUCCPS during the placement process.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer John Muraguri said the service also placed students based on the affirmative action programme.
“In the universities, a total of 1,569 students were admitted to higher degree choices than they had applied for due to affirmative action. Another 526 students (496 males and 30 females) benefited due to gender considerations while 1,041 students from arid and semi-arid lands were enrolled in degree programmes that they had not initially qualified for,” Dr Muraguri said.

He said KUCCPS would open an online system for inter-institution transfer applications between May 1 and 31 to allow students who wished to transfer to other institutions or courses to do so.

“Thereafter, universities are required to immediately furnish us with admission reports for us to forward them to the Government to release funding for the students,” Muraguri said.

MERGERS AND NOT THE RATE CAP IS GOING TO BE THE BIGGEST SUBJECT IN KENYA'S BANKING INDUSTRY

The shares of KCB group and NBK have been suspended from trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange after information on their potential merger surfaced.

It is said that KCB group plans acquire assets of the struggling National Bank of Kenya which recorded a 98 percent decline in net earnings in 2018.

In line with the Capital Markets regulations, NSE has suspended the two banking stocks as they wait for more information to be released to the public.

I hope Olunga will have a great tournment.Let me hope I'll be seeing more of Wanyama's rockets and ballistic shots. The lad scored a Messi-esque goal against Huddersfield!
TayserMahri:
Wanyama salivating at Mane meet up in Cairo

CAIRO, Egypt, Apr 13 – They were best of friends during their time with English Premier League side Southampton FC and still remain in close contact though they moved separate ways with Mane in Liverpool and Wanyama in London.

But, the two will put friendship aside when they clash in the 2019 African Cup of Nations in July in Cairo with Kenya having been pooled with Senegal and both players being captains of their respective teams.

“It will be very interesting because we have been friends for a long time and it will be great playing against each other in the national team for the first time. I teased him a bit after the draw and told him we are ready for them,” Wanyama told Capital Sport.

He added; “He knows it will be tough and I know as well it will not be easy because Senegal is a very good team and Mane himself is a phenomenal player. But we will square it out on the pitch.”

The skipper who has just returned to form with his club Tottenham Hotspur including scoring on his third start of the season against Huddersfield on Saturday believes if Kenya work well, they can get off the groups and into the knockout round.

“It is a tough group yes, but one that we can manage well. I believe as a team we have grown and we are better than we were in yester years. We will take game at a time and give our best. Algeria is also a very strong team and Tanzania as well so there is no easy match,” the midfielder added.

Stars start their campaign against Algeria on June 23, then play Tanzania four days later and finish off the group stage matches with the Mane v Wanyama duel on July 1.

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars players believe they have the ability to get off the group though they admit it will not come on a silver platter.

Forward Michael Olunga who played a starring role in the qualification process believes they have the ability to go past the group stages.

“I would look at it as a fair draw because these are teams we can compete with. We have a very good team and if we do our homework well, we have what it takes to progress,” said Olunga who is currently firing from all cylinders for his Japanese club Kashiwa Reysol.

Diouf is ''taking the piss''

We are no better when it comes to footy but the man fancies us to qualify!

Stars are pooled with Diouf’s Senegal in Group C of the June 21-July 19 showpiece alongside Algeria and Tanzania in a group Diouf has described will be tough.

“I think they will be a very difficult side for Senegal and in the group. I watched them play against Ghana in their last qualification match and they impressed me. They play good football, they fight and they run so much. I think it is a quality side,” Diouf told Capital Sport in a chat in Cairo.

“There are good players in that team then of course there is the captain (Victor Wanyama) who has done so well with Tottenham. Not a pushover side any day,” added the striker who also featured for Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Diouf has likened the Kenyan team to his own side’s squad of the 2002 World Cup where the Lions of Teranga reached the knockout phases, only seeing their journey cut short with a sudden death goal against Turkey in the quarter finals.

“We were in a tough group… Denmark, World Champions France and Uruguay. On paper, no one would have given us a chance. We were the underdogs. But we had some good team spirit and we worked hard to qualify,” the forward reminisced.

He believes pressure will be on his Senegalese side and Algeria, the perceived big boys in the group.

“Everyone expects Senegal and Algeria to get off the groups and also, many people expect Senegal to be among the teams to fight for the title. So, pressure will always be on them. Kenya and Tanzania have nothing to lose and it is always dangerous playing against such a team. It will not be easy,” Diouf noted.

He expects either Kenya or Tanzania to make it to the knockout rounds especially with the expanded tournament making room for four best third placed teams progressing.

“I believe one of them will be in the round of 16. If they don’t make it in the top two in the group, I am sure either Kenya or Tanzania will be one of the best number three teams. I fancy Kenya,” further stated the forward.

By 2023, the GDP will be at 157 b according to the latest projections. The most important thing for me is however to channell this growth and make it relevant to the common man in our small towns and villages!

rvp2018:
I see IMF have raised their 2023 - If the IMF projections hold out, Kenya’s economy could grow to Sh15.7 trillion in 2023.

Previously they claimed kenya economy would be 12.8 kshs or 128B in 2023.

Look like Morrocco is the next - then maybe Algeria - and we can face the big giants of Egypt & South Africa - Nigeria

I'm wishing all the best for Sebastian Migne. I'll take a draw against Senegal and a win over both Algeria and Tz!
TayserMahri:
Plus we have a very poor record against Senegal. We have a much better chance against Algeria. We share a 50-50 win rate with Algeria (3 wins each and one draw, all in competitive matches).

Senegal's Sadio Mane is going to have a field day playing with us. The lad is a much gifted footballer.
TayserMahri:
Too bad. The area has not been having regular fires leading to massive buildup of fuel over decades so its def going to be hard to control with the steep cliffs and ready matter. Hope they have made good progress. Teams from Kenya, SA and France had arrived and Israelis arrived today from what I read. Henceforth, wendem, you need to invest on containing wildfires. Get those planes. In Kenya they are very crucial in containing the very first instances of fire typically within minutes before the fire reaches your magnitude.

Our group is tough with Algeria and Senegal. We can only hope for a draw with the two but thank goodness we were given Tanzania !!! Even before kickoff the Tanzanians are usually 1-0 down psychologically to us. If we scrap out a win against either Senegal or Algeria we would have a good chance. You have to consider that every team in the group has three points in the bag from the Tanzania game.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by Jonraid(m): 12:06pm On Apr 15, 2019
With goodwill and just a slight change in our leadership style, we can do 7 percentile growth per annum or even more than that. But in a typical Kenyan way we will forever do the 5 and 6 percent!
rvp2018:
Samrobo,
Kenya will be at South Africa current level in 10yrs - Nairobi by then will be Africa's Capital City (it already well under-way with most companies picking it her over Joburg).

Ten years ago - South Africa GDP was around 290B dollars - now at 2019 is projected to be around 370B.

Ten years ago - Kenya GDP was around 35B dollars - now at 2019 - it is projected to be 100B (3 times!! bigger).

We know Kenya's growth is broad-based, well diversified, has hit a sweatspot of 6% growth rate year on year and it about to reap demographic dividends - and unlike the oil or commodity dependant economies - like Nigeria or Angola - we can expect the momentum to be maintained.Kenya gov expect the economy to be around 150B by 2023.

South Africa medium-term economic prognosis is very bad - 1-2% growth rate - for next few years.

So 10 yrs from now - Kenya GDP will probably 300B - South Africa will be around 450B - around 2019.

By around 2032 - Kenya and South Africa will probably be around 500B - if Kenya won't have overtaken RSA at that point.

Nigeria probably won't exist as country then - Oil will be on it's way out - and Nigeria would be busy in civil war.

Israeli firefighters are the latest addition to a growing list of experts in Ethiopia to help authorities deal with a rampaging forest fire that has hit the Semien National Park in the northern Amhara region.
Fire have been raging in parts of the historic national park for the past few months but it wasn’t until last week that external intervention was sought for to combat the crisis.
Experts from South Africa, Kenya and France were among the first to offer their assistance as of last week.

Wikileaks, Assange and Nairobi

These revelations are contained in the book WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy, written by British journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding in 2011.

In the book, Mr Assange reveals his intention of starting WikiLeaks on Kenyan soil in 2007. He had come for the one-week World Social Forum, which began on January 24. It was held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The event is a parody of the World Economic Forum, a preserve of wealthy nations.

He set up a tent at Kasarani and spent four days handing out flyers and talking about his intention to set up WikiLeaks.

Mr Assange was so happy with the response he got that he spent the next two years in Nairobi making connections with activists like Mwalimu Mati. He would later tell an Australian publication that Kenya had an extraordinary opportunity for reforms.

“ While in Kenya, Assange met courageous individuals, banned opposition groups, corruption investigators, trade unions, a fearless press and clergy. These brave people seemed the real deal to him. He contrasted them with fellow westerners who just loved cameras and throwing parties with foundation money,” the book says.

The media freedom here in Kenya is unparalleled. We would readily speak out against the government without fear of intimidation. This scenario motivated Assange to start Wikileaks!
