The Ondo State government has hailed the appointment of Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a son of the Alani of Idoani as its Surgeon-in-Chief of the National Children’s Hospital in the United States of America (USA).

The Acting Governor of the State, Hon Agboola Ajayi described the appointment of Dr Olutoye as a round peg in a round hole as he was part of the team that carried out surgery on a baby in-utero in a Texas hospital in 2016.

The National Children’s Hospital has announced Dr. Olutoye as its Surgeon-in-Chief. By his appointment, he will lead one of the largest children’s hospital surgery departments in the world.

Not only will he be leading 11 surgical departments, Dr. Olutoye will also be responsible for the education of the next generation of leaders in children’s surgery.

However, Ajayi in a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Babatope Okeowo said the youth of the state should emulate Dr Olutoye who has distinguished himself in the field of medicine.

According to him, the good people of the state are proud of the exploits of his sons who are doing well in their chosen carriers both at home and abroad.

Ajayi however advised the youths to see the attainment of Dr Olutoye as a challenge to them to strive to achieve excellence in whatever their fields of endeavour.

The Acting Governor said the youths have good examples to follow instead of engaging in internet fraud, drug peddling and other crimes that can spoil the good name the nation is trying to build for herself.

The ancient town of Owo in Ondo State went agog on Friday as the traditional rites for the installation of a new king kicked off.

The new Olowo of Owo, Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye is the 32nd paramount traditional ruler of the town.

The palace of the Olowo was not left out as it wore a new look after being renovated in preparation for the crowning of the new king.

Installation rites commenced very early at the Olugbule Palace where the king was given two traditional titles.

The chiefs from Iloro quarters perform the rites, being the custodian of Owo tradition as they came with the first king of the town all the way from Ile-Ife in Osun State, the cradle of the Yoruba race.

Prayers were also offered for the new king in a small house known as the Arigidi, after which rites were performed at the crossroad near the Olowo palace as well as behind the town hall.

These are procedures that must be followed before a new king is installed after which he will enter the palace.

Politics / Local Govt Workers, Teachers, pensioners, Undergo Verification by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:48am On Aug 21, 2019
The much awaited verification of local government workers, primary school teachers and their pensioners have commenced on Tuesday across the 18 Council areas of Ondo state.

It was gathered that the exercise was aimed at fishing out ghost workers, teachers and pensioners in the state.

It was further learnt that despite massive retirement of primary school teachers and LG workers their monthly wage bills were yet to reduced significantly.

Meanwhile, the state government said the on-going verification exercise of workers at the local government councils in the state is to ascertain the number of workers that are genuinely working in the councils.

The state Head of Service, Mr Dare Aragbaiye who made this known on Tuesday while monitoring the exercise in Akure South Local Government Councils Secretariat in Akure, said the exercise is in the best interest of both the workers and the government.

While addressing the workers at the commencement of the exercise, Aragbaiye said the verification is to identify the actual number of workers that should be on government pay roll, saying that it is also meant to eradicate the instances where government would be paying ten people when only two people are actually doing their jobs.

Williams Oni, Media Manager in the Office of HOS, quotes Aragbaye to have therefore enjoined the workers to cooperate with the state government for their mutual benefit, saying that the exercise was not to put unnecessary suffering on them.

Responding to reporter’s interview, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Segun Odusanya said the exercise only concerned local government staffs, primary school teachers and pensioners at the local government councils.

He said those concerned are to come to the verification centres with their letters of first appointment, last promotion letters and must be identified by their Heads of Department.

The exercise is expected to last for two days.

Politics / Ondo APC To PDP: Your Allegations Are Imaginary by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:12am On Aug 21, 2019
The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is astonished that an opposing political party in the State, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, could churn out porous and imaginary allegations to distract the APC-led government.

In a statement signed by the state publicity Secretary Mr Alex Kalejaye said the PDP, in a desperate attempt to smear the soaring image of the ruling party recently accused the APC-led government of defrauding the state, impoverished traditional institutions, destroying the health sector, among others.

It further stated that APC is deeply astounded that a party that carried out a crude castration and strangulation of the State finances could issue such a statement in less than 30 months of its exit.

The APC wishes to declare with all sense of modesty that the current administration has proved that it has come to serve the people; develop the land, and not to plunder the treasury.

The above assertion explains why the government never struggled to pay salaries as at when due. Pensions, that the previous administration considered an aberration, are also being paid.

It is incongruous to listen to a government that couldn’t pay salaries for several months, and left behind hundreds of billions of debts, accuse the APC government of defrauding the state, with all the celebrated infrastructures that are visible, to even the blind.

In the health sector, the APC government has so far employed about half a million health workers to ensure a healthier state.

The dearth of medical equipment and consumables that created hedge on the path of efficiency in service delivery is now history. The APC government has expended billions of Naira on such equipment; 22 containers of 40 feet each.

Besides, the government has upgraded and expanded additional five General Hospitals to be Mother and Child friendly, and complement the two facilities inherited.

The ruling party also finds it disgusting that a well-cultured African would hide under politics to desecrate the traditional institutions by painting them in negative lights.

The revered traditional rulers do not depend on handouts from government, therefore, no party or government could confer poverty on them. They deserve respect from all of us; there must not be mudslinging to the royal institution.

As a responsible party, we are reluctant to remind the PDP of the on-going trial of some of its principal officers, including its State Chairman, in connection with financial crimes.

The financial recklessness that rocked the State Assembly under PDP, paved the way for destructive crisis, when a director was caught with huge sums of cash on the instruction of the then speaker.

The attempt by the then outgoing administration, to withdraw huge sums of money led to the flight of an honest State Accountant-General.

As a quick reminder, hundreds of millions of naira were siphoned and under the guise of “outsourcing legal matters”. One of the PDP leading governorship aspirants can testify to this.

The APC advises opposition parties to display higher level of maturity in their so call “attacks”, and come up with constructive criticisms.”

Politics / BEMORE Girls Share Experiences, Laud Mrs. Akeredolu’s Initiative by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:45am On Aug 17, 2019
The joy of the 2019 class of BEMORE girls knows no bound as they have been exposed to so many opportunities that would make them change the narrative about woman as a weak, second class creature.

Investment / Rice Revolution: Ondo Plans Bigger Capacity Mill by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:39am On Aug 14, 2019
Rice is staple food for about four billion of the world’s population. The Asian continent dominates in terms of global rice production, with China and India as topmost leaders.

The top 10 rice producing countries in the world currently are China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Bosnia, the Philippines, Cambodia and Pakistan. They are also among the top 10 consumers.

Rice is the second most important cereal after corn. In 2017, 482 metric tons were produced. Out of this, China produced 210 metric tons.

Nigeria is regarded as one of the highest rice importers globally until recently. In Nigeria, major rice producing states are Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Borno, Enugu and Cross River.

The country is currently the leading country in Africa in rice production as well as the highest consumer.
This is as a result of the efforts of the current government to discourage rice importation.
According to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data in 2015, the quantity of rice production was put at 5.5 million metric tons, while in 2017, there was an improvement at 5.7 million metric tons. But consumption rate was put at 7.9 million metric tons in 2017.

The improvement recorded in the production rate was attributed to CBN’s Anchor Borrower’s Programme which benefitted a total of 12 million rice farmers and four million hectares of FADAMA rice land. This has tremendously reduced import bills of the country and improved job creation.
Food security is one of the current challenges being faced in the country and all tiers of government are taking different measures to see to how this could be surmounted.

With the advent of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu-led administration in Ondo State, different agricultural programmes have been flagged off and the results being recorded so far have been encouraging.

Ondo State is not regarded as a rice producing state. It is known for cocoa, yam, cassava and cashew, among other crops.
Attempts by previous administrations in the state to work with both Thailand and Malaysia on rice production didn’t yield any positive result.

The Akeredolu’s administration seems to be gradually making appreciable progress, using calculated approach to assist rice-producing communities. Over 70 per cent of the rice farmers in the state are members of the Federated FADAMA Community Association.
The present administration has taken rice production to higher level through capacity building, access to input and funds.

It also partners with FADAMA to set up a pilot mill at Alayere in Akure North Local Government Area. The mill is meant to be replicated in all rice-producing communities. Besides, plan is also ongoing to set up a bigger capacity rice mill by the state government before long.
Visiting some of the rice farms in Akure South Local Government Area and one located near Ogbese River at Asolo-Uso in Owo Local Government Area, efforts of the state government in ensuring that the farmers who are empowered record bumper harvest were revealed.

Farmers, who cut across several associations, said their challenges included inadequate tillers to till their farms in preparation for planting. This, they said, delays the pace of work on their farms.
The state government is busy exploring all available low line areas with high aquifer that are suitable for rice cultivation. Some of the places being currently used for rice farms are Aule, Leo and Ogbese, among others.

Rice requires a lot of water to grow; it is the water-logged swamps that were cleared by the state government through the office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Agriculture and Agricbusiness, Pastor Akin Olotu.

At first, some of the farmers owned up that they were being dissuaded by some members of their associations not to take part in the programme when it was initiated by the state government as they described it as another deceit from government which would not see the light of the day. But they appreciated Governor Akeredolu for proving them wrong.

While speaking on his farm site at Aule area of Akure, Mr. Kolawole Joseph lamented that cattlemen had attempted severally to enter their farms with their cattle but they warded them off on each occasion.
Mr. Daniel Okpe, who has two separate farms with his wife managing one at Aule, appreciated the governor on his Leo farm for the thresher provided for them which he said helped them a great deal.

He, however, said the powered tiller operators charged N30, 000 per hectare and due to shortfall in rainfall for some time; the machine could not do any work on the farm.
Another rice farmer, Isaac Olude thanked the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Agric and Agricbusiness, Pastor Olotu for making sure the governor’s vision became a success.

He assured the farmers that the government would soon procure some sets of multi-purpose- powered tillers under the Commercial Agric Credit Scheme Loan, which would be distributed to all the rice-producing communities for smooth operation.

He explained that the powered tillers could till the ground when wet or flooded. It can also be used for irrigation and weeding purposes.

On how they maintain the farm, Mr. Sado Evans said: “Different herbicides are applied. When the crops are grown, they use herbicide called selective. The solution has been prepared in such a way that it would not have serious impact on the rice plant, but would dry up the weeds among the rice.

Politics / Soyinka Gave Akeredolu Thumbs Up On Infrastructure by joshuaakindele7(m): 11:17am On Aug 13, 2019
By Falodi Fisayo

NOBEL laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, is unarguably an untiring Nigerian whose understanding and views on social and political issues in the country cannot be ignored by lovers of good government. Even the dictatorial military government that trampled upon the rights of Nigerians for decades and denied them the benefit of electing their leaders in a peaceful manner for years before democracy returned to Nigeria about 20 years ago could not but remember Soyinka as a fearless individual who has chosen to live his life to fight injustice and oppression for the purpose of enhancing the advancement of humanity.

The playwright, besides being reputed as a man who always speaks the truth no matter whose ox is gored, also carefully chooses his company. So, the literary giant’s recent visit to Ondo State was not accidental in any form. In fact, the visit cannot but be likened to the proverbial killing of two birds with a stone.

The first point of call when Prof. Soyinka visited Ondo State for the D O Fagunwa Study Group Second International Conference holding at the International Culture and Events Centre (The Dome), Akure, was Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s office, where both men pondered on relevant issues concerning the development of the Sunshine State and the country in general.

The purpose of the 2019 edition of the D.O Faguwa Study Group’s conference is to celebrate Wole Soyinka’s 85th birthday, considering his long years of unwavering fight, support and commitment to the course of social justice through literature writing and other legitimate means. The conference was themed: “Wole Soyinka, D.O Fagunwa and the Yoruba Artistic Heritage.”At the venue of the conference, Soyinka’s virtues as a brave icon, role model and giant pace setter, among others, were celebrated.

Leading the pack of dignitaries to pour the eccommium on the literary giant were Prof. Ropo Sekooni, Jimmy Solanke and cinematographer, Tunde Kilani, among others. They all hailed Soyinka as a true Nigerian whose views on issues would always arouse the attention of discerning minds. Soyinka, who no doubt appreciated the popular dictum, seeing is believing, chose to visit a few of Governor Akeredolu’s developmental project sites. He went beyond relying on the various reports on the governor’s performance to visit a few of the project sites where he commended the people of the Sunshine State for making the right choice in electing Akeredolu as their governor. Without mincing words, Soyinka expressed gratitude to the current Ondo State government for celebrating his 85th birthday and for the completion of the ‘Dome’ which was meant to celebrate art and culture.

He also hailed Akeredolu’s infrastructural strides in Ondo State. The literary giant’s accolade stemmed from the indubitable fact that Akeredolu’s financial management ingenuity reflected in the prudent allocation of the scare public resources to promote the total wellbeing of the people of the. state. The Nobel laureate, who was personally driven and conducted round a few of the project sites in Akure, the state capital, by Governor Akeredolu, revealed that he had been on constant visits to the state in the course of his literary work and observed that the governor had changed the face of the Sunshine State in spite of the dwindling monthly allocation from Abuja.

Soyinka, with the governor and members of the state executive ouncil, saw and inspected the ‘A’Division/NEPA and the ongoing dualisation of NEPA/Oluwatuyi Roundabout Road projects. Marveled by the progress of the road projects, Soyinka said: “The fact shows the light.” He explained that it took him some time to recognise the A’Division/NEPA and NEPA/Olukayode ongoing dualisation project because of the serious infrastructural transformation that is going on in the area. Another visit to the workshop where about 284 dead and decayed vehicles were being reconditioned to enhance productivity in the public service elicited a profound commentary from Soyinka. Describing the workshop as a laboratory, where things hitherto considered impossible are now being made possible, Soyinka could not hide his excitement following his appreciation of the fact that the new initiative exposed artisans from Ondo State to new technology and modern ways of doing things. In short, Professor Soyinka hailed Governor Akeredolu for championing the cost-saving and strategic leadership initiative.

The Nobel Laureate, regarded as an advocate of good governance and transparent leadership, spared a thought for the security challenges confronting the South-West. He urged declaration of state of emergency to tackle the manece in the region. Soyinka said: “As regards the insecurity in the South West, there is an emergency. There should be a declaration of security emergency through out the land and measures taken accordingly. There are many directions of security lapses, you know it here, especially in Ondo State, it is a calamity through out the whole nation. There is an emergency.” The playwright asked the governors, especially those in the South West geo-political zone, to work assiduously toward tackling the security menace.

Akeredolu did not hide his love for the novelist’s contribution to development of knowledge. Besides describing him as a first class academic, playwright, poet, novelist and great human condition activist, the governor perceived Soyinka’s life as a lesson for public office holders because he had elevated the art of partisan living as the biggest ideal of social reclamation.

Politics / Retired Permanent Secretaries In Ondo State Get Vehicles by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:40am On Aug 05, 2019
Following the injection of additional 30 reconditioned cars for the use of the Ondo State Government, the State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has directed that the Permanent Secretaries who recently pulled out of the State Public Service be given one each of the vehicles as part of their retirement benefits.

Akeredolu said the directive became necessary in view of the promise he made to the former accounting officers when they came to bid him farewell on their retirement.

Announcing this to a cross section of Public Servants in Akure during the unveiling of the 30 reconditioned cars, Arakunrin Akeredolu said paucity of funds had made it impossible for the State Government to purchase official vehicles for members of his cabinet who have been serving the state for over two years now.

While calling for patience from all critical sectors in the state Public Service in need of operational vehicles, Governor Akeredolu assured of the unrelenting desire of his administration to reawaked the state economy towards prosperity.

“Let me stress that the units of vehicles being commissioned today cannot go round. But as more are completed, more people will get what is due to them”, he said.

The Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa said the occasion was a good day for the Ondo State Public Service in view of the fact that Governor Akeredolu has continually kept his promises to the state

He noted that Akeredolu is entrenching on the Sunshine State a good governance model hinged on Strategic Transformational Leadership which in no time will make the state the envy of others.

In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Ifedayo Abegunde described the governor as a visionary leader whose initiative has created a template of value for the good governance posture of the present administration.

The Chairman of Logical Ideas Limited, Chief Wole Okunnuga in his remarks described Arakunrin Akeredolu as a courageous administrator with ingenious acumen for transformation.

He said that the step of the governor has brought the people of Ondo State, especially artisans, into productivity as the programme has an inbuilt exposure of artisans in the state to new methods of reconditioning vehicles.

“This action has also given the state massive savings because brand new cars of these sort cost N528 million, but the governor has brought these cars to Ondo with N65 million. Some said why not buy ‘Tokunbo’ cars, but I told them that these are better than ‘Tokunbo’ because all necessary parts are brand new, while the cars come with two years warranty on engines”. he said.

Providing insight into while the State Government ventured into the project the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa described the development as value addition, adding that Arakunrin Akeredolu has been prudently utilising the little resources accruing to the state to ensure good governance in the state and save public funds.

He stressed that the reconditioned cars would go a long way at enhancing the quality of productivity by civil servants in the state by ensuring improved service delivery.

Also on behalf of the drivers in the state the Chief Technical Officer, CTO, Mr Odunayo Kolawole assured the governor of proper use of the vehicles to serve the purpose they were meant to serve.

Politics / Ondo Communal Clash: Araromi-obu Community Hails Gov Akeredolu Over Peace Move by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:03am On Aug 05, 2019
The people of Araromi-Obu Community in Odigbo Local Government have commended the Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on his move towards finding lasting solution to the crisis rocking Ago-Alaye Community over land tussle with their Ikale neighbours from Okitipupa Local Government.

The people of Araromi-Obu in Odigbo Local Government, under the aegis of Araromi-Obu Development Council (ADC), said the constitution of panel of enquiry by the governor to ascertain the causes of the crisis was a welcome development.

At a press conference over the weekend, Senator Omolola Meroyi, who spoke for the ADC, accused the Ikales of distorting historical facts as regards the real owners of the disputed land.

“It is imperative to inform the public that contrary to the deliberate falsehood, untruth, half truth and sophistry being peddled by General Bajowa and his cohorts, Araromi-Obu has been in existence for over 500 years with the present Ajobu, Oba Aderemi Adelola as the 18th occupant of the throne of the ancient town.

“It is therefore shocking that in spite of avalanche of documentary evidences freely signed by the Ikales as tenants of our forefathers spanning over a century, they could turn round to assert that Araromi-Obu people are settlers in their own land.

“We are satisfied with the fatherly role which Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has displayed as an arbiter in the conflict and urge him not to be deterred by the antics and outburst of belligerent individuals like General Oluyemi Bajowa (rtd) whose stock in trade is to benefit from the misfortune of the hapless indigenes of Araromi-Obu,” he said.

Also, Senator Meroyi alleged that the call for truce and peaceful resolution to the crisis from their own part as well from the state government and security agencies had on several occasions been snubbed by the Ikales.

Crime / Akeredolu Urges Army to Arrest Culpable Soldiers For Alleged Rape by joshuaakindele7(m): 4:56pm On Aug 03, 2019
The Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN has urged the authorities of the Nigerian Army to immediately hand over to the Police for urgent prosecution, the soldiers arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a University student at the Akungba-Ikare military checkpoint.

Mr. Governor particularly finds the alleged offence callous, mindless and heartaching that it was said to have been committed by soldiers whose presence ought to be a succour to the people, especially the vulnerable, in the face of the heightening wave of violence and insecurity in the country.

It should be noted that the Government of Ondo State under Arakunrin Akeredolu, SAN shall do all within its powers to fight this bizzare menace of rape in the State. Rapists, or those who wish to traverse this ignobly desecrating path will find Ondo State too hot as a refuge for such nefarious act. Government shall be firm and decisive, the Governor says.

The Governor describes as heart-warming, the arrest of the alleged perpetrators of this case involving the soldiers at the Akungba-Ikare checkpoint. This is even as he salutes the swiftness of the Brigade Commander who ensured the seamless apprehension of those allegedly involved.

Reassuring as this effort appears, Governor Akeredolu is unequivocal and unwavering in his insistence that the suspects be handed over to the Nigeria Police for immediate prosecution. The full weight of the law must be tested in this particular case to serve as a deterrent to others who seek to undesirably, take advantage of the unprotected.
