Politics / Akeredolu Congratulates Olowo-designate by joshuaakindele7(m): 6:56am On Jul 15, 2019
Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has congratulated Prince Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye on his emergence as the Olowo-elect of Owo kingdom.

The governor’s message followed reports from one of the senior Omolowos (kingmakers), Jamiu Ekungba on the outcome of the selection process which, he said was peaceful, democratic and procedural in line with the customs and tradition guiding the selection of an Olowo.

The governor said even as the state government awaits a formal communication from the kingmakers as required by law, he was enamoured by the peaceful conduct that heralded the emergence of the Olowo-elect.

Akeredolu commended the peaceful manner the selection processes went since they began.

This, he said, posited an enviable narrative that has dwarfed the needless tension which enveloped the town since the commencement of the selection processes.

It is, therefore, apposite to submit that the ingenious democratic template enunciated by the kingmakers has produced the choice of Owo indigenes as demonstrated by the outcome of the selection.

Akeredolu, who hails from Owo, commended the indigenes of the town for their co-operation during the selection process.

While wishing Ogunoye God’s wisdom and grace as he prepares to ascend the throne of his fore bearers, Akeredolu appealed to the Olowo-elect to unite all sons and daughters of the town.

He enjoined Ogunoye to extend hands of fellowship to other contenders to the ancient throne before his emergence.

The governor expressed optimism that Owo people would take maximum advantage of the moment of fresh breath and savour the peaceful ambience that has berthed in the kingdom.

Agriculture / Farmers Want Cocoa Tea In School Feeding Programme by joshuaakindele7(m): 8:08am On Jul 08, 2019
The Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to include cocoa tea in the Home Grown School Feeding Programme across the country.

The association said the cocoa tea had numerous health benefits that were good for health and growth of school pupils.

The National Chairman of the CFAN, Mr Adeola Adegoke, made the call at the inauguration of the new national executive officers of the association in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Friday.

Adegoke said, “Cocoa tea is rich in polyphenols, which can reduce inflammation, better blood flow, lower blood pressure and regulate the cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

“It will be better if the FG can include it in the Home Grown School Feeding Programme for our school children.”

He stated further that the association was ready to partner the government and other stakeholders to bring back Nigeria to first position among the cocoa producing countries in the world.

In his remarks, the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, urged the new executive members of CFAN to put measures in place to ensure that cocoa farming became more attractive to youths.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Gboyega Adefarati, the governor said the state government was tackling some challenges confronting farmers in the production of quality cocoa seeds.

According to him, some of the challenges included old age of farmers and farms, urbanisation, price fluctuation, old varieties of cocoa and poor road network, among others.

He said, “This administration will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that your requests are given priority attention. As I speak, work is in progress in more than 60km feeder roads linking the various farm camps and villages to enable our farmers move their produce without hitch.

“It is equally worthwhile to mention that this administration has embarked on free distribution of cocoa seedlings to the farmers for their new planting and rehabilitation programmes in the current year.”

A former governor of the state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, in his own speech, urged the government to ensure that cocoa farmers make more profit on their product after spending a lot on the production of cocoa.

“Our responsibility is to add value to cocoa sector and make it more profitable. The monetary value accrued to farmers is usually less than six per cent. The farmers are in bondage in terms of gain as they cannot determine the price of cocoa produced by them,” Mimiko said.

Food / ‘ban Tomato Paste’ by joshuaakindele7(m): 12:59pm On Jul 05, 2019
The Federal Government has been urged to ban some products, particularly tomato paste, because some imported pastes contain about 50 per cent starch before dilution in Nigeria where an additional 15 per cent starch is often added.

A Professor of Horticulture and Landscape Management at the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Goke Bodunde, made the call at the 59th Inaugural Lecture of the institution.

Bodunde, who delivered the inaugural lecture entitled: “Unveiling the beauty of an unforbidden fruit”, condemned substandard tomato paste import and the consumption of rotten tomato fruits called Esha in the Southwest, which he attributed to poor tomato yield.

According to him, although tomato is vital to nutrition, Nigeria has the poorest production in the world with about five tonnes per hectare (ha), compared to Egypt that records a yield of 39.7t/ha and South Africa’s 78.7t/ha.

Bodunde attributed the low tomato productivity to environmental and managerial factors.

The don stated that because of the low production and the dietary compulsion of tomato in culinary use, some abuses had been observed.

“This is the story of some of the tomato paste and puree imported into Nigeria, 91.1 per cent of which, according to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) (2015), failed to meet the required standard,” he said.

According to him,“it is noteworthy that most of the pastes are imported as concentrates in drums and big cans from Italy, India and China. They are usually diluted, packaged and finally canned by various canning industries in Nigeria”.

Speaking on the way forward, Bodunde advocated investment in tomato canning industry by the private sector and the government as well as the promotion of research-industry linkage.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kolawole Salako described Professor Bodunde as a very effective academic and mentor who has supervised more than 150 undergraduates’ projects and over 60 postgraduate research theses at Masters and Ph.D levels either as a major or co-supervisor.

Politics / I Need Formidable Team To Make Nigeria Better – Buhari by joshuaakindele7(m): 1:23pm On Jul 03, 2019
As the country awaits his new cabinet, President Muhammadu Buhari said he needs a formidable team to deliver his Next Level mandates to Nigerians.

Buhari said this when he met with the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) led by the Chairman, Omoniyi Akinsiju, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, yesterday,.

Also in the delegation was Tunde Thompson, who was imprisoned by the administration of then Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, under the draconian Degree 4 of 1983.

The journalist was The Guardian newspaper’s Diplomatic correspondent when he was arrested by the defunct National Security Organisation, alongside a former member of the House of Representatives, Nduka Irabor, who was then an assistant editor at The Guardian.

Thompson was sentenced to a year in prison, for writing about the closure and retirement of some diplomatic staff.

Regardless, Buhari told his guests that, as a team, they fought a good fight and won the race in the just-concluded elections.

He said: “Our government continues to grow in strength and will place a firm foundation for future generations.

“While there will be those who are determined to drag us back to the bad old days, your visit is timely. It is a exactly a month ago that I was sworn in for a second term in office. The task ahead for the four years will require a formidable team.

“I assure you that I am resolute on fulfilling these promises and will leave Nigeria a far better place than when we came.

“It is not an easy job to sell the administration’s services; we are doing unpopular things and facing powerful individuals and taking on invested interest who are accustomed to the corrupt era. But, we must do things the right way, if we promised change then we must deliver it. This is regardless of whose interest is touched. There must be a manifest departure from the old order.”

Earlier, Akinsiju informed the president that BMO “regularly commissions the writing and publishing of newspaper opinion articles and press statements, to elucidate and amplify government programmes and clarify on socio-economic and political issues being undertaken by the administration.

“Members have also appeared regularly on television and radio, to promote and defend the administration while maintaining an active presence on the social media on daily basis, engaging on issues affecting the president and his administration.”

The BMO boss said the Buhari administration has achieved more since the return to democracy in the country with abundance of facts to prove.

He said despite twisted narratives about clashes between farmers and pastoralists, “your administration has shown the most commitment towards ending these decades-long conflicts; it has produced several strategies and plans aimed at providing a sustainable resolution.”

In a similar development, the president said the time has come to serve Nigerians well since the 2019 elections “are behind us.”

He spoke at the Villa , yesterday, when he received the Buhari Support Group Centre,

He said: “The 2019 elections are behind us. Nigerians have spoken, and they have spoken loudly in our favour.

“It is now time to serve them, and serve well. We will not fail,” he said. We will serve honestly, genuinely, and with our heart and might. Our country has oscillated for too long at the level of promises and potentials. It is now time to explore and exploit the potentials for the good of all Nigerians, particularly the ordinary people. It shall be accomplished.”

The president commended members of the group for their “steadfastness,” and assured them of inclusiveness in pursuing the goal of good governance for the country.

“This group is composed of people who have identified with me since I threw my political hat into the ring in 2002. And, they stood with me through thick and thin, abiding with me in the electoral and legal processes of 2003, 2007, 2011, till God gave us victory in 2015, and also 2019.”

Agriculture / AAUA Researchers Launches Akungba Tomato by joshuaakindele7(m): 9:49am On Jul 03, 2019
A team of researchers from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State has commenced research towards producing a variety of tomato that will ‘grow faster, yield higher, and be resistant to rot and disease’ than the variety grown in the Northern part of the country.

The research named ‘Akungba Tomato’, is coordinated by the University’s Centre for Research Development (CRD). It is aimed at producing a tomato variety that will be suitable to the local soil and still contain a higher percentage of the qualities of the preferred northern variety.

These were disclosed by the Director of the Centre, Prof. Olanrewaju Olotuah in a chat with the Information Unit of the University.

When completed, seeds of the tomato will be distributed to local farmers at no cost, while other needed extension services and assistance would also be provided freely in order to encourage its wide cultivation.

The effort, he said, is in line with the university’s pledge to prioritise researches that will benefit its immediate environment in particular and the nation in general.

Prof. Olotuah noted that it is disheartening that what used to be the local variety of tomatoes grown widely across Ondo State and in the South-West, has been abandoned in favour of the northern variety because of the belief that the local variety tends to go sour and rots earlier than the northern variety.

“What we are working on will be of immense benefit to local farmers. We hope to come up with a tomato variety that will ultimately be preferred to the northern variety. We hope to make what we are working on to be better disease-resistant, yield higher, grow faster, and be cheaper to produce and thus cheaper in the market.

“We have noted the complaints of people that the local variety that was once grown widely across the state rots easier and tends to go sour earlier. All these we will address by the time we are through with what we are working on.

“And as a proof that we are serious and confident of the outcome, we will distribute its seeds free of charge to local farmers and monitor things while hoping that it becomes the preferred tomatoes grown and consumed locally.

“We are looking into making our variety contain less amount of water or sap so as to prevent it from rotting early. Its skin could also be thicker so its shelf life could be longer,” he said.

Prof. Olotuah expressed optimism that the ‘Akungba Tomato’ would reduce the dependence of people of the state on the northern variety of tomatoes. He said the research team comprises nutritionists, plant scientists, soil scientists, and other experts from various fields all coming together to make it a success.

Politics / Ondo Community, Electricity Provider Agree On Tariff by joshuaakindele7(m): 9:34am On Jul 03, 2019
To facilitate improved power supply in Aboto community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, residents have agreed with the power service providers, R. R. Reynolds on billing terms.

Every household in the community has been provided with stand-alone solar power by the company. This was in fulfilment of the agreement it reached with the state government last year under the Ondo State Government fast-power programme.

The fast-power programme is part of the phase one of the state government’s electricity improvement scheme.

Beneficiaries of the power project have not been charged for the service. But they will begin to pay from July.

However, the people and the power service provider have agreed on a reasonable rate payable.

While the people called for scaling up of the power supply to avail them opportunity to use additional electronic appliances, the provider requested for consistent payment by customers to offset some of its costs.

Representing Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Town Hall in Aboto, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities, Tunji Ariyomo, an Engineer stated that the investors wanted assurance from the people that they would pay for the service, ahead of when the company would scale up power supply.

The traditional ruler of the community, the Alaboto of Aboto, Oba Oyetayo Ofo-Aye assured the state government and the power company of their co-operation and readiness to pay at least N500 per month, per household.

The power company had initially offered N1, 000 per month per household.

Beneficiaries of the project would be expected to start paying bills from next month.

At the meeting, some of the beneficiaries, James Atimise and Mrs. Taiwo Akinte commended the Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration for ending 12 years of total darkness.

They thanked the state government for the creative way it succeeded in the power intervention for Aboto town.

They revealed that security and social life have improved in the community, particularly night life and that their children no longer have excuses for not studying.

The traditional ruler appealed to Engr. Ariyomo to prevail on the power provider to quicken the process of upgrading the capacity of the facilities so that they can power their non-energy saving devices such as television sets and refrigerators.

Having agreed to the billing rate, a committee for the Cluster Offtake Unit (COU) was immediately constituted and members were chosen by the people.

The five-man committee would be liaising with the people of the community regarding payment of bills and challenges faced by the customers.

Members of the committee are Mr. Memokan Emmanuel (Chairman), Mrs. Akinte Taiwo, Mr. Omotehinse Adeyemi, Mr. Adeji Ogooluwa and Mr. Temuhi Kehinde.

The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by community leaders and the people.

Among dignitaries present at the meeting were Acting General Manager, Ondo State Electricity Board (OSEB), Engr. Oreoluwa Fadoju, Acting Secretary, Office of Public Utilities (OPU), Princess Abike Bayo-Ilawole, Primate S.O. Ayodele, High Chief David Akinte, High Chief Adegbenro Atimise, Chief (Mrs.) Christiana Ogbolo and Chief Elkannah Elemo, among others.

He revealed that the team was in the state to know and learn from the laudable experience which has been adopted as a model by Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

So far, Kamomi Aketi water scheme through RUWASSA has repaired no fewer than 955 hand pump boreholes to the rural communities across the state.
Anthonio also said World Bank was also looking at how to assist the country to address issue of open defecation through provision of water scheme.

He added that, the World Bank through the federal ministry of water resources is providing the sum of 350 million dollars to support the water project across the country.

He particularly lauded the state for being one of the states that signed the P-Wash protocol and government’s various efforts aimed providing water to the rural communities.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu while welcoming the team to the state, said when his administration came on board over two years ago, water project has been one of the focus of his administration.

He added that before he came in record had it that there were so many abandoned boreholes across the state which needed to be rehabilitated while so many other areas were not even covered at all.

Akeredolu disclosed that since the intervention of his government through RUWASSA, the people of the state have continued to feel the positive impact of RUWASSA through the provision of drinkable water in every nook and cranny of the state, just as he lauded the chairman of RUWASSA and her team for the harmonious working relationship which has made the wonderful job easy for them.
He noted that the development has also impacted on the health of the citizenry as they are now getting water from the pump as against the stream which is not hygienic.

He further hinted that the government, through the provision of rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene is also making the state open defecation free.

Akeredolu further solicited the support of the World Bank in the project. He also used the occasion to appreciate the support received from the Federal Minister of Water Resources.

He said his administration signed the P-Wash protocol because his government believed in importance of water to mankind, saying clean water is life.

The representative of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs Ajia Jummai Umar Wakaso noted that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources established the P-Wash Programme called Partnership for the expanded rural water supply, Sanitation and hygiene as an intervention programme to deliberate look at the rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene for support.

“Thereafter, the P-wash programme was launched in November 2016 by the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo. Following the launch, only 23 states in Nigeria signed into the P-Wash protocol for which Ondo state is one and since then the Federal Ministry of Water Resources has been piloting the programme,” she said.

Jumai explained that what makes Ondo State to be unique in the P-Wash programme was a result of massive infrastructural development in terms of rehabilitation of hand-pump boreholes through ‘Kamomi Aketi’ integrated water scheme’ being piloted through RUWASSA for the rural areas ,using the state-owned resources.

She described the development as very commendable hence the Federal Ministry of Water Resources adopted Ondo State model of hand pump boreholes rehabilitation and released the sum of N100 million in January as counterpart funding under P-Wash 40-40-20 arrangement to support the state in providing 1, 230 hand pump boreholes.

She described the state model of rehabilitation as worthy of emulation.

According to her, what makes P-Wash programme unique is that fact that it is looking at both water supply, sanitation and hygiene holistically rather than handling different components of Wash separately in bridging the gap, saying that the World Bank is impressed with the programme and the Ondo State policy in that direction.

Earlier, Chairman, Ondo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, RUWASSA, Mrs. Yetunde Adeyanju, who recalled that at the inception of the present administration, water access in the state was 4%, explained that with the introduction of ‘Kamomi Aketi’ aspiration water scheme by the state governor, 803 boreholes were repaired within a year.

“In the month of August 2018, at the National Water Council in Abuja, Kamomi Aketi Aspiration Water Scheme was adopted by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources as a standard for the sustainability of Rural Water and Sanitation in Nigeria, with which we were supported with rehabilitation of 1, 230 boreholes rehabilitation, out of the over 7, 600 nonfunctional boreholes across Ondo state.
“As at today, we have repaired 955 boreholes in the ongoing exercise ” she stressed.

Education / Ondo State Government To Renovate 733 Primary Schools by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:47am On Jul 01, 2019
Contracts worth several billions of naira for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of about 733 public primary schools across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State have been awarded.

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Princess Oladunni Odu who disclosed this in an interview with The Hope noted that there are 1,233 public primary schools in the state out of which 500 were earlier renovated by the present administration.

According to her, about N7.8 billion was made available by the government for the schools reconstruction and rehabilitation project with a view to giving them new looks and as well attract more pupils.

Princess Odu explained that part of the project also include provision of furniture, computers, boreholes and other amenities that will make teaching and learning more conducive.

Her words: “We want to make the school’s environment conducive for teaching and learning so that they will be motivated and be able to compete with others from the private primary schools.

We will provide information technology class; we are going to provide water sanitation. The N7.8 billion definitely cannot provide everything, but it will go a long way, though we may not be able to cover all,” she added.

Already, she said government has re-introduced sporting activities and agricultural practices in the schools stressing that most of them are now being used as pilot for poultry, fishery and animal husbandry.

While noting that sports play a vital role in the lives of children, she disclosed that: “We are providing some schools with tennis, volleyball and football equipment and because we need good health, water sanitation is very important.”

On security, Odu said most of the schools compounds have been fenced to ensure the safety of the pupils while in school.

The Chairman said the measures would depopulate the private schools that are mostly without competent teachers and good standard.

She said the state’s public primary schools could boast of qualified workforce, but still lacked adequate supervision. She promised that it would be looked into by the government as soon as funds are available.

Princess Odu said when Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu took over in 2017 primary education was in a state of disrepair and bad shape.

Odu noted that although, mega schools were built by the last administration, the remaining old schools suffered total neglect and infrastructural deficit.

She said the marching grant of N3.9billion from the Federal Government meant for revamping primary education in the state was not accessed by previous administration, thereby making the sector to suffer.

“There is this programme for basic education by the Federal Government, whereby if the state paid one billion, the Federal Government will march it with another one billion naira. So before the governor came on board in 2017, for four years, the state counterpart fund had not been paid. So the state was unable to access the FG fund. It was lying fallow there”.

“Governor Akeredolu took the bull by the horn. He sourced for the money and paid all the arrears of N3.9 billion at a go. It showed that he really wants basic education to be developed in the state. Basic education is the most important of all the tiers of education, that’s the very foundation and if it is not properly funded, other things will wobble.”

“We have been able to renovate 103 schools in Odigbo, 84 in Owo, 91 in Akure, 89 in Okitipupa, 24 in Akoko North East and across the three political zones of the state.

“What is peculiar about Akeredolu’s administration is that he wants the renovations to be a total package, whereby buildings that are bad would be renovated and some demolished.

“When the environment is friendly, the children would not want to sit back at home, it will be conducive for teaching and learning, ” she added.

President of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, REAN, Mr. Segun Adaju disclosed this during a partnership meeting with Ondo state first lady and the Solar sisters Nigeria, held at government house ground Alagbaka Akure.
Explaining the need for the partnership, the REAN President noted that renewable energy companies are committed to reduce the number of generators and dependence on epileptic power supply in Nigeria.

He noted that the commitment of Mrs. Akeredolu to the development of solar energy system in Ondo state through BEMORE initiative where the girls are trained on solar and ICT, attracts the interest of REAN to partner the programme and increase power distribution in the state.

Mr. Adaju noted that the Renewable Energy companies concentrate on turning agricultural wastes, water icing, and winds into energy.

According to him, he took interest in the project during his encounter with BEMORE girls during exhibition in Abuja, where they took him through solar-powered projects.
The REAN President who said he was so impressed by the excellent performance of the girls, expressed readiness of getting some of them trained and place them on internship and apprenticeship.

Mr. Adaju also said REAN will be willing to prepare the girls on financial report training, with mentorship opportunity, and to help make the laudable initiative of Mrs. Akeredolu go viral, and attract the attention of international agencies like USAID to support the initiative.

He assured that the collaboration will yield positive results within a year, while disclosing his readiness to bring his company down to the state and also encourage his colleagues to do so in order to make energy accessible to all and sundry at a very affordable fee.

She expressed her determination not to allow epileptic power supply in the country deter the mission, hence, the need to embrace REAN in order to provide energy across the state through the BEMORE initiative.
Mrs Akeredolu emphasised the need to carry women along in the project, noting that every market woman need solar energy in their shops as an alternative, reason they were all invited to witness the new development.

She felt excited about the partnership, noting that the Renewable Energy companies must have seen the ingenuity of the initiative before approaching her office for collaboration.

Earlier, the Country Director of Solar sisters Nigeria, Mrs. Olasinmbo Sojirin had noted that the focus of the company is to conquer energy poverty in Nigeria.
She lamented the rate at which Nigerians lack access to modern energy power, noting that women and girls are most affected, especially in rural areas through indoor smoke pollution.
The Solar sisters Nigeria director described indoor smoke pollution as the third highest killer that disproportionately affect women.

According to her, the target is to provide clean energy solutions for households, productive and institutional uses to achieve SDG 7 in the state.

Investment / Ondo To Benefit From NPA’s $2.6bn Cancelled Badagry Seaport by joshuaakindele7(m): 11:06am On Jun 27, 2019
The efforts of the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) towards developing a deep seaport in the Riverine areas of the state appear to have paid off as the Federal Government has finally agreed to open discussions with the state on the project next week.

This development is coming on the heels of the cancellation of the $2.6bn Badagry deep seaport project by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

The Badagry project was reportedly halted on the ground that the deep seaport master plan was wrongly done.

The Managing Director of the NPA, Hajia Hadiza-Bala Usman, was reported to have explained that what was currently required in Nigeria was to fast-track the development of deep seaports that would make the nation’s seaports competitive.

In a bid to finding an alternative to the cancelled Badagry seaport project, the NPA boss is expected to have a preliminary meeting with Governor Akeredolu on the possibility of exploring a “seamless but due process” to commence the construction of a deep seaport at Araromi seaside in Ilaje local government area of Ondo State. The meeting will hold next week, barring the unforeseen.

An impeccable source in the Federal Ministry of Transport who gave the hint said the option to develop the Ondo seaport was informed by certain natural advantages the site had aside the preliminary technical efforts the state government had put in that regards.

“From the look of things, the next destination after Badagry had been cancelled, remains Araromi in the coast of Ilaje local government in Ondo state, and we are committed to this because we are already under pressure to find lasting solutions to the embarrassing gridlock in the Apapa area of Lagos.

“Already, arrangements have been concluded for the NPA team to meet the Ondo state government to explore a seamless but due process towards the realisation of the project.

*We are aware that so much efforts have been put by the state governor for there to be a seaport along the coastline of that state and precisely in Araromi where there is a natural trench and deeper raft than the Badagry project which would been more expensive to embark upon because it lacked the required minimum of 16 meter raft in depth.

“I can emphatically day that the technical efforts of the Ondo state government appear to have jump started the process because we followed up and we are almost convinced that Ondo state has a deeper raft advantage than any other in the country, so we may have no choice than to look in the direction of Ondo.

He said the choice of Ondo, aside the natural advantages was info date by its proximity to the south east and south via Okitipupa and Ore.

Giving reasons for the cancellation of the Badagry project, the NPA boss said it was done to avoid financial and commercial liabilities.

“If you look at the Badagry and the Lekki deep seaport projects, they are all within the Western ports. The port master plan will guide us on whether it is okay to have two deep seaports in close proximity to each other.”

“When I assumed office, I inherited a consultant that was supposed to do a Port Master Plan for the Badagry project, but the consultant did a very bad job. When we took the job to the consultant that did the project’s Terms Of Reference, our internal people looked at it and said it wasn’t good enough. Even the consultant that did the TOR confirmed that the job wasn’t properly done.

“So because of these issues, we cancelled the contract, and the project’s promoters took us to court. We are currently in arbitration. Now we are working on re-awarding the contract. I just gave the go-ahead for the engagement of another consultant that will do the Port Master Plan. The master plan will allow us to know where ports should be deployed in the country in-view of environmental issues, in view of commercial and financial liabilities”, she said.

Politics / Senate Plans Separate Budget For Police Commands by joshuaakindele7(m): 1:19pm On Jun 26, 2019
The President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, says the National Assembly is planning a separate budget for adequate funding of the 36 commands of Nigeria Police.

Lawan said the move was to enable officers and men of the police force perform optimally and tackle insecurity in the country.
He disclosed this on Tuesday when the Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu, led the police management team to pay him courtesy visit in his office.
Lawan assured the IGP on the early passage of the Police Reform Bill, Police Academy Bill and smooth implementation of the Police Trust Fund.

He added that “the police need to be restructured, including the separate appropriations being canvassed for the state police commands by the Inspector General of Police.

“I can assure you that the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, when constituted, will work with your management on the separate funding for the state police commands.

“This is necessary, because we want you to spend your resources prudently and economically. We want you to always display efficiency on your duties and we will always give you support.

“Separate budgetary provisions for the stateu police commands different from the Force Headquarters is a good idea.

“The current style (of lumped budget) is not giving the deserved result.”

Lawan further assured that the passage of the pending bills would be fast-tracked as soon as possible.

“The Police Reform Bill, when passed will assist the police on better funding.

“The Police Academy Bill will also be given consideration because we want to see officers and men of the Police Force that are trained and re-trained.”

The IGP in his earlier remark had requested the support of the Senate for better funding of the Police.

Adamu equally requested for the quick passage of the Police Reform Bill and the Police Academy Bill to enhance efficiency of the Force.

Politics / My Take Home Salary Is N750,000 – Lawan by joshuaakindele7(m): 11:59am On Jun 26, 2019
President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, yesterday picked holes on insinuations that Senators and members of House of Representatives are paid jumbo salaries, saying that it was far from the truth.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja when the National Executives of Senators’ Forum led by its Chairman, Senator Khairat Gwadebe paid him courtesy visit in his office , Lawan stressed that one of the things the 9th National Assembly in collaboration with the executive arm of government wants to get rid off , is the yearly budget delays with their attendant economic dislocations.

Against this backdrop, the President of the Senate who promised that the 9th Senate plans to return to the January cycle of the nation’s budget, said however that this would be possible if the Executive forwards to the National Assembly, the 2020 Appropriation Bill by September or first week of October to enable the National Assembly pass the budget within three months and that would be December.

Lawan who explained that he does not receive jumbo Pay, said that his monthly take home salary is N750,000, just as he explained that funds are also provided to run his office. Lawan said, “We owe Nigerians everything. The National Assembly is going to be open to the public. I believe that the National Assembly will throw everything open to the public. Let Nigerians know what we are doing but one thing I want to emphasize here is that I don’t believe in any thing called jumbo pay to the National Assembly.

“Members both in the Senate and the House receive what is their salary. I receive N750,000 as my salary but I need to function as a senator. My office needs to be properly funded. Therefore I cannot conduct my oversight without some funding.

“So I believe that Nigerians need to understand this. We need to continue to explain to Nigerians and I will also urge you to explain to Nigerians because they need to be kept abreast with happenings in the National Assembly.

“They deserve to know how their resources are being utilized and this is what we will continue to do. I believe that the National Assembly needs proper funding because the legislature is so critical to any development. When an institution is going to legislate on almost everything under the sun they should have the best and Nigerians should have the best outcome. “

The public also need to know what our functions and roles are. I believe that we should continue with the Open NASS. In 2018 we had the first version of the Open NASS where individuals, NGOs, were invited and we had a lot of activities with the public. We will continue with that. We will enhance it so that Nigerians can come to the National Assembly, see what we do and I believe that Nigerians would understand what we are doing here and why we attract some funding and continue to attract some funding. So we continue to do those things that will make Nigeria a stable and prosperous country where everybody would be proud to be a citizen.”

On early submission of the budget, the President of the Senate said: “We don’t have any doubt. We know the challenges. We will work hard to solve the challenges. We will pass the budget in three months. All we require is for the Executive to submit the budget on time, at least September or first October.

“If that happens and we get it, we will pass the budget before Christmas. We need to return to the January to December budget circle.”

Speaking further, Lawan who reiterated that the 9th Senate will take the issue of loversight function very seriously to ensure that heads of government agencies carry out their statutory functions effectively, said, “This kind of interaction is very important. It gives us the opportunity to share experiences. There are things that are challenging to us that we can share with you.

“The ninth Senate is a bipartisan Senate. What that means is that, we will remain focused and work for Nigerians. What we have done is to be patriotic. Nigeria is our constituency.

“The challenges before Nigeria are very massive. We need to work for the economy and ensure that things work for everyone.

“We don’t need to fight anyone. We will follow the path of peace. Any minister or head of an agency must function. At the end of the day, Nigerians should benefit from this.”

Earlier, Chairperson of the Forum, Senator Khairat Gwadebe who explained that members of the Forum will always support and partner the National Assembly in any capacity for the progress of the country, sustenance of democracy and the institution, said: “You need to use your 20 years experience as a lawmaker to make a difference. Our main objective as a body is to work in strengthening the polity. We are very confident that your leadership will be good for Nigerians.”

Gwadebe who that the Forum was structured to promote good governance aimed at making the country stronger, told the President of the Senate that as former senators with institutional memory , they will always be there , to support him in leading the 9th Senate and by extension, National Assembly aright.
