Politics / Resurgent Economy: 10 Things To Know - Presidency by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:14am On Feb 21, 2019
The Fourth Quarter 2018 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) results released recently by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) give lots of cause to cheer.

Below are salient points to note from the report, as the Muhammadu Buhari administration puts the Nigerian economy on firm, solid footing:

1. The economy has recorded continued progress since it emerged from recession in 2017. Current result shows a Real GDP growth of 2.38% compared to 1.81% in Q3 last year, representing the strongest growth since the economy slipped into recession in 2016.

2. For more than five decades, Nigeria has paid lip service to diversifying the economy, from sole dependence on oil. The latest result shows that economic growth has continued to be driven by the non-oil sector, which grew by 2.70% in Q4 2018, up from 2.32% in Q3 2018. It represents the strongest growth in the sector since Q4 2015.

3. The non-oil GDP growth was driven by Quarrying and Other Minerals, followed by Telecommunications, Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Construction. That is diversification in progress, real time, no matter what the naysayers may say.

4. While the non-oil sector actually drove GDP growth, the oil sector contracted with crude oil and gas GDP reducing by -1.62%. This shows that with good governance, focus, prudence and accountability, the life of the country need not depend on oil ad infinitum.

5. The NBS report further shows that Services GDP growth recorded its best performance in 11 quarters, growing by 2.90% compared to 2.64% in Q3 2018 and 0.10% in Q4 2017. Overall, while growth in the economy was moderated by the contraction in the oil sector, 39 out of 46 economic activities recorded positive growth in the quarter under review.

6. The improved GDP growth can be attributed to Government's continuous implementation of the policy initiatives in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which has boosted the performance of the non-oil sector.

7. The growth in Q4 2018 GDP is consistent with the improvements in other macroeconomic indicators, including inflation, capital inflows, foreign trade, external reserves, amongst others.

8. Headline inflation has been trending downwards from 18.55% as at December 2016 to 15.37% in December 2017 and further to 11.44% in December 2018.

9. The total value of capital importation into Nigeria stood at $2,140 million in the fourth quarter of 2018. This translates to a full year capital inflow of $16,812 million compared to $12,228 million in 2017.

10. Although the economy is now growing, more still must be done to deepen its diversification and make it less vulnerable to external shocks. That is an unflinching commitment of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Those who do not see any good in something not initiated by them toil endlessly to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that nothing good is happening on the economic front. But facts are stubborn things. The more they try to deny the facts, the more they rudely stare at them in the face.

With the Buhari administration, economic Eldorado beckons. Nigeria is inexorably set for that Next Level.

Politics / Ondo APC Group Dismisses Anti-party Allegations Against Akeredolu by joshuaakindele7(m): 11:14am On Feb 19, 2019
A group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State , Progressives Youth Movement (PYM) has condemned in totality , the accusation of anti-party activities leveled against the Governor of the state , Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu , SAN, by some acclaimed leaders of the party in Akoko North West local Government.

The group also explained that the spokesperson for the group, one Mr. Thalis Apalowo showed the flaws embedded in the accusation and exposed the intentions of the unseen hands behind the ruse called press conference.

It noted that Apalowo lacks every qualification to speak for elders of the party in Akoko North west.

The state coordinator of the group, Comrade Joshua Akinmoyo in a press statement described Apalowo’s accusation as laughable, baseless and unfounded. The group maintained that the Governor has vigorously campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates in the state.

PYM said Governor Akeredolu was the first governor in the whole of the South West to have a center for the Buhari / Osinbajo re-election. The group also maintained that the Governor has donated over 30 vehicles for the Buhari’s re-election campaign .

According to the group, it is laughable for anyone in the state to claim to love or be more dedicated to the Buhari’s re-election in Ondo state than Governor Akeredolu.

He said the likes of Apalowo cut short any future hope on the not too young to run movement.

The group accused Apalowo of venting anger on the Governor after he lost the house of assembly ticket to another aspirant from his constituency. It wondered why Apalowo could be so desperate to making spurious allegation against a governor because he lost the assembly ticket.

‘We are disappointed by the latest outburst of Mr. Apalowo. We condemn in strong terms and in totality the accusations leveled against the governor. We like to make it clear that Apalowo is merely venting anger because he felt the governor didn’t favor him during his recent struggle to clinch the House of Assembly ticket in his constituency

‘Apalowo had wanted the governor to pronounce him as an anointed candidate so that he could clinch the APC house of assembly ticket in his constituency with ease. The young man who is also a member of this group, had started firing different verbal missiles at the governor since he lost the ticket

‘We are disappointed at Apalowo for allowing himself to be used by some unscrupulous elements who are determined to undermine the right of the people .We are shocked that Apalowo could allow himself to be used as an attack dog over a pot of porridge

‘Why we are not surprised is because we know Apalowo to belong to the “Lets share it” class of politics. He’s a political mercenary that needs not to be taken serious. Apalowo is a hustler who cares only about his purse and bread and butter.’

Politics / Re: I Don’t Have To Rig Before Winning A Re-election — Buhari by joshuaakindele7(m): 5:13pm On Feb 18, 2019
ayfay047:
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he does not have to rig before winning his re-election because he campaigned in all parts of the country and he can boast of enough support from Nigerians.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress national caucus meeting in Abuja on Monday, the President said, “I’m not afraid. I went round the 36 states and the FCT and I think I have enough support across the country to vote for me.”

The President also warned Nigerians against causing any form of “disturbance” during the elections, saying that security agents are aware of likely “hot spots.”

“I do not expect anybody to cause any disturbance. The security agencies have identified hot spots and flash points and should be prepared to move.

“We have made as much arrangement as possible for them as much as the country can afford.

“Anybody who decides to snatch ballot boxes or lead thugs to disturb the process, may be that will be the last unlawful action you will take.

“We have directed the military and other security agents to be ruthless. We are not going to be blamed that we want to rig elections.

“I want Nigerians to be respected and let them vote whoever they want across the parties. I am not afraid of that. I went round the 36 states and the FCT and I think I have enough support across the country to vote for me.”

Politics / INEC in Ondo Audits Returned Election Materials by joshuaakindele7(m): 12:52pm On Feb 18, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ondo State have commenced the audit of sensitive materials returned across the 18 local government areas of the state to the Central Bank in Akure.

Investigation conducted by The Hope indicated that the step was taken to forestall any loss of the sensitive materials for Saturday’s election.

A visit to the CBN office in Akure by our reporters discovered that various vehicles were conveying the election materials from the various local governments back to the CBN from the early hours of yesterday.

Security men were seen at the CBN subjecting the vehicles to a thorough screening as well as the people coming into the bank to prevent any crisis.

Visits to the CBN and INEC offices on Sunday showed that stern looking mobile policemen, regular police and soldiers were keeping vigil at the two offices.

At the INEC office in Alagbaka, Armored Personal Career (APC), was stationed to condone off the road leading to the office, no vehicle was allowed to pass through the road and none coming in except those transacting business with the commission.

The entrance of INEC was manned by fierce looking mobile policemen, so also was the entrance of the CBN where motorists were quizzed.

Speaking on the development, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Femi Joseph confirmed the development and said that it was done to forestall breaking down of law and order.

According to him, INEC offices in some states had been attacked by hoodlums and sensitive materials burnt, but to prevent such in Ondo State, reason why men of the police condoned off the road leading to INEC.

His words:” This Ondo Police Command shall embark upon from now till Saturday when the postponed election shall be held. We shall also do it at all INEC offices statewide, make sure that all the sensitive materials distributed last Saturday are escorted back to CBN and then distribute safely to all the locations before the coming elections.”

“What we are doing now is to escort back all the materials distributed last Saturday, take stock of all sensitive materials with INEC officials and make sure that nothing happens to the materials.

“We are to guard all INEC offices in the state from now till coming Saturday and any threat to security will be curtailed.”

Femi Joseph therefore called on all the policemen to continue with the patrol of the state, while the people of the State should not panic.

Also, INEC Public Relations Officers, Mr. Assa Sadiqe said that the commission was expecting some electoral consignments from Ibadan, but assured that the electoral body was ready for Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

He added that the tight security at the entrance of INEC office in Akure and other offices in the state would not be relaxed.

“When you see what hoodlums are doing to sabotage INEC’s commitment to hold a free, fair and acceptable elections in the country and some believed that they should attack our offices and vehicles, then there is the need to take precautions to forestall the attacks.”

He assured that the commission would be ready for the coming Saturday’s elections.

Addressing Journalists, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Rufus Akeju, said the postponement of the general elections earlier scheduled to hold last Saturday was to ensure free, fair, credible and transparent electoral process.

According to him, following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plans and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that going forward with the elections as scheduled was no longer feasible.
Akeju, who told journalists that the postponement would afford the Commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections, however, assured the people of the State of INEC’s unwavering commitment to maintain its integrity to conduct free, fair and credible elections and deepen the nation’s democracy.

He said following the postponement, the Presidential and National Assembly elections would now hold on Saturday, February 23, 2019, while the Govenorship and State Houses of Assembly elections would now hold on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

“This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

“The Commission wishes to assure the general public of this great state of its unwavering commitment to the veritable tenets of fairness and integrity in the discharge of its onerous task of deepening democracy in Nigeria”, the REC said.

All attempts to ask the REC further questions proved abortive as he declined further comment, saying “that is all I have to say”.

Politics / My Resolve To Fight Corruption Unshaken – Buhari by joshuaakindele7(m): 9:08am On Feb 05, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday said that his resolve to make the fight against corruption one of the cardinal objectives of his administration was unshaken and promised to continue with the fight in his second tenure if given another mandate.

President Buhari stated this at the swearing in of nine members including a 27-year-old lawyer, Hannatu Muhammad into the board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), chaired by Professor Bolaji Owasanoye.

He reminded the members that their appointment was a call to national service in a sector that is critical to the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government agenda, adding that the fight against corruption was key to his government.

The President said he was poised to “pursue and will continue to pursue as I seek the mandate of Nigerians for a second term. “The fight against corruption is very crucial in our national development. This is why I have often said – if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.”

While reminding the members of the damage corruption has inflicted on the nation’s development aspirations, alhe said, “apart from deliberate and wanton looting of our national wealth and common patrimony, corruption has eroded our values and ethical foundation as a nation.

“Corruption has negatively affected our political, economic and social life. Those opposed to our fight against corruption berate us for our focus, determination and single mindedness.

“They pretend that they do not know what corruption is. But Nigerians know what corruption is. Ordinary people know what corruption is and they support our effort and determination to fight it.

“The abuse of public office for private gain represents corruption in its worst form. The circumvention of public policies and processes for competitive advantage and profit is another form of corruption.

“The abuse of public office for personal benefit even if no bribery occurs is also corruption. The diversion of State revenue or miss-application of budgeted funds falls into the same category. “I am particularly delighted that the ICPC law under which you will operate is robust enough to assist government to sanitize the public sector of corruption in service delivery, public procurement, diversion of public revenue, deliberate misuse of public funds, and so on.

“As I have noted in recent times, despite our anti-corruption drive, some agencies of government still divert or refuse to fully account for revenue generated. “Rather than obey constitutional provisions and extant rules and regulations, such agencies continue as if nothing has changed.

“We are determined to ensure that every agency of government account for public revenue generated or expended. I am looking forward to ICPC’s support both for enforcement of anti-corruption laws and submission of policy measures and directives to prevent revenue leakage and diversion.”

The President urged the new ICPC board to collaborate with other government agencies such as the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation towards mitigating wrong-doing in public expenditure. He particularly said he looked forward to receiving anti-corruption recommendations linked to e-Government standards and principles.

“As the old saying goes – “Prevention is better than cure”. Your statutory mandate recognizes this principle. Therefore, I encourage you to come up with strong preventive policy measures and strategies for government’s endorsement to take us to the NEXT LEVEL in the fight against corruption. I am aware that the ICPC laws empowers you to make proposals to assist government in this fight.

“Just about a month ago, I opened your Corruption Risk Assessment training for anti-corruption agencies in Africa. That initiative, in support of my role as the AU anti-corruption champion is welcome, and I Iook forward to seeing ICPC distinguish itself as a leading institution in Africa in building capacity to conduct and implement corruption risk assessments.

“But charity must begin at home. Therefore, your skills and expertise must be demonstrated in identifying MDAs highly prone to corruption and what must be done to bring about better governance.

“I am also aware that you have set up Anti-Corruption Transparency Unit in Ministries, Departments and Agencies. This is an important step towards corruption prevention and ensuring full compliance with government’s anti-corruption measures and our laws. “I encourage you to make effective use of our ACTU in MDAs by receiving reports directly from such Units and taking enforcement measures to assist government realize its objectives of a cleaner public service.

“My resolve to fight corruption remains unshaken. I assure you of my full support in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.” 27-year-old lawyer, Hannatu Muhammad (Jigawa) represents the youth in line with the requirement of the Act setting up the commission, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said, while reading her biography. Other women on the board are Dr. Grace Chinda (Delta), and Mrs. Olubukola Balogun (Lagos).

Other members are Okolo Titus-(Enugu), Obiora Iqwedebia (Anambra), Justice Adamu Bello (Katsina), Abdullahi Maikanu Saidu (Niger) and Yahaya Umah Daudu (Nasarawa). Recall that Owasanoye and eight others were in October last year confirmed by the Senate Chamber. The president had on July 25, 2018 sent the nomination requested the Parliament for confirmation.

He is the fourth substantive chairman of the commission since it was established by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 1999. Previous chairmen of the commission are Justice Mustapha Akanbi (2000-2010), Professor Uriah Angulu (Acting Chairman 2010 to March 2011), Dr. Rose Abang-Wushishi (Acting Chairman, March 2011-August 2011), Abdullahi Bako (Acting Chairman, (August 2011-November 2011), and Ekpo Una Owo Nta (November 2011 to January 2018.

In his remarks, Owasanoye said with President Buhari at the helm of the country, the will to fight corruption and bring the menace to a standstill was not in doubt.

He said: “We are lucky to be given this assignment because under your leadership, your unquestionable, unequivocal and unshakable resolve to deal with corruption is very well known. Therefore, the political will required to fight corruption is available. “I pledge on behave of the commission and members that we will do our best not to disappoint you or disappoint the country.”

Owasanoye was the executive secretary of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC.

He was appointed in August 2015 to “promote the reform agenda of the government on the anti-corruption effort, advise the present government on the prosecution of the war against corruption and the implementation of required reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.”

Politics / Ekiti PDP Lawmaker Defects To APC, Says PDP Has Reached Its ‘dead End’ by joshuaakindele7(m): 11:14am On Feb 01, 2019
Mr Olarewaju Olayanju, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) representing Emure Constituency in Ekiti State House of Assembly, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He described PDP in Ekiti as party which had reached its ‘dead end’, saying he could not continue to be in a party which was divided against itself.

Olayanju announced his defection at a news conference at the Assembly on Thursday.

“I have reflected deeply on the current situation and I have informed my constituents that my interest and their interests can no longer be achieved in the PDP.

“PDP in Ekiti is now in disarray. No leader to rally the members together, the leaders have destroyed the party through naked use of powers.

“The party is factionalised in Ekiti with leadership calling on the people to vote for opposing political parties; the party has reached the dead end.

“As a man of integrity, I can not stay and work against the party, therefore, I am willingly defecting to APC,”Olayanju said.

He said before now APC had not won in Emure in Emure Local Government area in long time, but as from now, he assured APC of landmark victory in the forthcoming elections.

The Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Adeniran Alagbada, congratulated the new defector for defecting to the “Next Level of Progress”.

He said that although there were just four APC members in the Assembly, but he was optimistic that in the coming weeks more PDP members would defect to APC.

The speaker called on Ekiti people to vote enmasse for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid in Feb. 16 and other APC candidates.

Present at the news conference were the State Chairman of APC, Mr Paul Omotoso, his Deputy, Mr Sola Elesin, and the Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Tola Esan.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, stated this yesterday while briefing journalists in Abuja. Onilu, who spoke on the position of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar at a Town Hall meeting that was aired on Wednesday night, said any group can endorse any candidate but that APC would not be deluded on the endorsement. The APC spokesperson, who had earlier criticized the endorsement of the PDP Presidential candidate by the Igbo Socio- Cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in his response to the endorsement of APC Presidential candidate by Afenifere, said: “The endorsement by Afenifere or any group whatsoever by whatever name so called is welcome.

“It is within their right to do so but I will also tell you that when Afenifere speaks, APC is not going to delude itself that the entire Yoruba have spoken.

That is the same stand we took when Ohanaeze Ndigbo endorsed Atiku and pretended to be representing the good people of South East. “So, we are not deluded by that. We welcome it. We thank them. We will take it along with us but no individual or group can claim to speak for an entire region in this country.

Politics / Governor Akeredolu Tasks Committee to Work For Buhari’s Victory by joshuaakindele7(m): 9:23am On Feb 01, 2019
Members of the Ondo State Campaign Council for the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation have been charged to work round the clock and ensure a resounding victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo in the February 16 general elections.

The Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) gave the charge while inaugurating members of the Council at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s office in Akure.

The Campaign Council which has the Governor as Chairman and Mr Ife Oyedele as Secretary, also has seven other sub-committees which include: Mobilisation, Protocol and Transport, Venue, Entertainment, Media, Security and Medical.

The Governor enjoined all committee members to work assiduously at ensuring the success of the APC Presidential Campaign Programme in the State coming up on February 5, 2019 at the MKO Abiola Democracy Park in Akure.

“We must mobilise the electorate effectively towards re-electing Buhari, who has performed greatly at making Nigeria safe, corrupt-free and economically developed for all citizens and as well, prove that Ondo State is an APC State.

“Ondo State delivered well for President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 Presidential Election even at a time the state had not gotten an APC governor, but now that the state is being controlled by the APC, the state must return all candidates of the party with overwhelming votes”, he said.

Akeredolu, while intimating members with the campaign itinerary across the state hinted that the state-wide campaign tour of the APC would be for six days, saying all hands must be on deck to ensure that all candidates of APC are victorious in their respective elections to make Ondo State stand tall among all APC controlled states in the country.

In his remarks at the inauguration, Director-General, Technical Aids Corps (TAC), Dr Pius Osunyikanmi lauded Governor Akeredolu for domesticating the APC Campaign Council and making it an all-inclusive platform to reinforce the unity of the party across the state.

Describing the action of the Governor as a major leap to the promised land, he said it was heartwarming that APC in the State has become one big family that would undoubtedly record 90 percent in the forthcoming election.

Osunyikanmi equally commended the achievements of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in less than two years in office in infrastructural development across the state and urged APC members to mainstream the sterling achievements into their campaigns.

Another member of the committee, Mrs Olamide Falana promised on behalf of the members, particularly women to ensure outstanding victory for APC.

Politics / Governor Akeredolu Signs 2019 Appropriation Bill Into Law by joshuaakindele7(m): 8:50am On Feb 01, 2019
Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Thursday, 31st January, 2019 signed the 2019 appropriation bill into law.

The governor said that the main objective of the budget is to advance the State to the next level through completion of the ongoing projects across the State.

He said his administration will continue to take the issue of workers’ welfare seriously while soliciting the voluntary co-operation of all residents in the State to be faithful in the payment of their taxes and levies.

Governor Akeredolu who signed the appropriation bill into law at the Excos Chambers of the Governor's Office, Alagbaka, Akure, explained that the 2019 budget was prepared on the basis of the inputs garnered during Town Hall Meetings with various stakeholders across the State and the 5-point development agenda of his administration.

According to him, the 5-point development agenda is the major platform upon which the aspirations and dreams for the State shall be translated into tangible and life transforming projects or programmes in the 2019 fiscal year.

He said " The 2019 budget, aptly christened the Budget of Advancement, which has just been signed into Law, has a total size of N193.903 billion

"Of this amount, N10.369 billion representing 5.3% is for Debt Service; N9.568 billion representing 4.9% is for Statutory Transfers to OSOPADEC and the 10% share of Independent Revenue to Joint Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC) of Local Governments in the State

" The sums of N83.852 billion and N90.113 billion representing 43.2% and 46.5% are for Recurrent Expenditure and Capital Development respectively. "

The Governor noted that the government was not unaware of the challenges posed by inadequacy of funds to effective and impactful budget implementation.

He pointed that the challenges faced are not unconnected to the government's inability to grow Independent Revenue to a level where it can cover most of the state's recurrent expenditure from funds generated internally.

"It is also disheartening to note that some Development Partners, in recent times, have failed to meet up with their terms of agreement. " He stressed.

The Governor disclosed that his administration has resolved to sustain the use of ICT to help drive independent revenue generation so as to block loopholes.

He said : "Our administration intends to continue to approach all issues of governance with the required gravitas. We shall proceed with renewed determination, despite the stated challenges

"I wish to assure you that this budget will be implemented, faithfully, in our quest to deliver the dividends of democracy and good governance to our people

" We will make sure that we have good value for every naira spent. We anticipate creation of more jobs for our youths. We shall deepen our engagement in developing infrastructural facilities.

"Provision of functional education and qualitative health care services remain our priorities."

Politics / Tinubu Defends Buhari, Says Onnoghen’s Suspension Fair by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:41am On Jan 30, 2019
Meanwhile, the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said Buhari was fair and balanced in his approach by suspending Onnoghen.

He said those who were faulting the President’s decision, particularly Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, apparently did not know the difference between suspension and sacking.

Tinubu said this in a statement he personally signed, tagged “Reply to Atiku’s state of the nation” and made available to journalists.

He said, “Buhari actually exercised considerable restraint in this matter. He has reasonably balanced concerns about the integrity of the judiciary with concerns for the individual rights of the accused.

“Nothing has been taken from the CJN that cannot be restored if the facts warrant such restoration.

“Thus, President Buhari conditionally suspended the CJN. By doing so, this allows for the case to move forward without the CCT or others fearing the CJN might use his position to unduly interfere with proceedings.

“If the CJN is exonerated, then he will return to his position. If not exonerated, then a more permanent discipline awaits him.

“This is an imminently fair and balanced approach, especially given the fact that the constitution and other laws really do not provide clear and unambiguous guidance on how to proceed in a case whether the CJN is the defendant under this unique fact pattern.

“While Atiku rails against Buhari because of this act of restraint, we can but imagine the tact Chief Obasanjo and Atiku would have taken if they presided over this situation.”

Nigeria no longer a colony, says Oshiomhole

Also, the APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday said Nigeria was no longer a colony of any superpower.

Speaking with State House correspondents, Oshiomhole noted, “The thing is that Nigeria is not a colony. I think we all have to be careful. We must defend the sovereignty of our country.

We welcome collaboration, we welcome peer review, we can compare notes, we welcome people who are interested in sharing experiences with us whenever the need arises, whether it is capacity building, making useful suggestions on how we can continue to improve on our electoral process.

“Those are very valuable contributions that we appreciate. But Nigeria is not a colony. We will not accept any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Nigeria.”

Oshiomhole argued further that Onnoghen admitted to have committed the alleged infractions he was accused of by the CCB.

Investment / Akeredolu Calls For Investment In Capital Market In Ondo by joshuaakindele7(m): 10:30am On Jan 30, 2019
The Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, said he would provide an enabling environment for capital market to thrive in the state, with a view to developing the nation’s capital market sector.

Akeredolu said an enabling environment was necessary in the state to encourage people to invest “when there is economic growth in the land.”

Akeredolu stated this in Akure, Ondo State, while declaring open a one-day enlightenment programme organised by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The programme was themed ‘E-dividend and investment initiative at developing the Nigeria capital market.’

The participants were drawn from major stakeholders in the capital market comprising civil servants, representatives of investment companies, representatives of the Ondo State Chamber of Commerce and Industry and representatives of Ondo State Cooperative Thrifts.

The governor, who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Ifedayo Abegunde, said the political climate would remain stable enough in the state to enable stakeholders recover their investment within a reasonable period.

He said, “As we are all aware, investors’ interests are being centred on three broad objectives, ― income, growth and safety. We will ensure these three objectives are not missing in our state.

“The objective of this enlightenment programme is to give alternate economic condition to civil servants and other stakeholders to decide the best time to buy or sell shares/securities.”

He explained that the enlightenment campaign would also provide an opportunity to prospective investors to be acquainted with the general principle and policy of “buy low and sell high.”

“I will like to appeal to you all to give this short enlightenment campaign the serious attention it deserves so that we will have an improved, effective and quality investment initiatives in the state.

“It will also give us the opportunity to put in our best to make sure that state derives maximum benefits from investment opportunities in Nigeria,” Akeredolu added.

The Zonal Director, SEC, Mr Edward Okolo, explained that the essence of the programme was to enlighten the people of Ondo State on e-dividend processes and the opportunities in the capital market.

According to him, the e-dividend will afford people of the state the opportunity to bring their moribund companies into the market and revive it, which will then provide employment for the teeming population of unemployed youths in the state.

He noted that the programme would not only afford participants the opportunity to be well informed about investment in shares and stocks, but would also help individuals to do the needful whenever opportunity opened for investment.

Politics / Buhari Hosts APC Senators, Candidates To A Dinner At Aso Rock by joshuaakindele7(m): 8:59am On Jan 29, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday hosted All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators and candidates to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the dinner, the National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiohmole, described the event as a “nice meeting”. He said the event had provided an opportunity for the president to meet with the caucus of the senate and the “incoming senators’’ (APC Senatorial candidates).

Oshiohmole expressed the hope that Nigerians would give the APC a comfortable majority in both Senate and the House of Representatives based on the tenet of `one-man, one-vote’.

He said: “Basically, the meeting was for the President to meet with the caucus of the Senate and the incoming senators by the grace of God. “The whole idea is for the president to have a direct interaction with the senators and the senatorial candidates of the APC so that they will work hard and ensure that on the basis of one-man, one-vote, the outcome of the 2019 elections will be in our favour. “This is an opportunity for some of the senatorial candidates to meet with the president for the first time.’’ According to him, the meeting also enables the president and the senators and party’s senatorial candidates to compare and share notes on the campaigns of each of the senatorial district. On the reactions of international community to the suspension of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, Oshiohmole dismissed any form of foreign outcry against the action taken on CJN’s case, saying that Nigeria was not a colony. He said Nigerians must defend the supremacy of the country, adding that corrupt justices were being prosecuted across the world. Also speaking on the suspension of the CJN, Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, said it was wrong for the senate to reconvene over the matter as there were many cases in courts challenging or supporting the suspension. He, however, stated that the senate could reconvene to consider the 2019 budget proposal and the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategic Paper. (NAN)

Health / Akeredolu Charges Community Leaders On Polio Sensitization by joshuaakindele7(m): 8:34am On Jan 29, 2019
Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has charged community leaders to preach the gospel of immunization in Churches, mosques and the community at large so as to help government in its efforts towards total eradication of polio.

Akeredolu said the primary healthcare can only be effective when the trio of government, health workers and community members work hand in hand at all times.

The governor commended all those who have been involved in the onerous duty of combating polio virus in the state. He hailed the team led by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro for sustaining the tempo on Polio eradication in the state.

Governor Akeredolu spoke at the State Task Force meeting on Polio eradication and Routine Immunization, held at the Cocoa Conference Hall, governor's office, Alagbaka, Akure on Monday.

He said : "As a traditional ruler, how much of the gospel of immunisation do you tell your community members during important community events and other avenues? Are our town criers at village levels still up and doing about community sensitisation? At the level of the 203 wards across the 18 LGAs, are the Ward Development Committee (WDC) members still committed to their communal tasks?

"Do churches and mosques still talk about immunisation during and after service to orientate their congregation and dispel immunisation myths?

The Governor also charged the media to take part in the sensitization roles of polio as their corporate Social responsibility by airing jingles on immunization on radio and television stations.

"Is the media ready to give more free slots, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, for our immunisation jingles to air on radio and television stations?

The governor also called for a sense of patriotism amongst the health workers and the people so as to prevent any incidence of Polio virus and other vaccine-preventable diseases in the State.

He added that the honest attitude of the rebranded primary healthcare workers towards Routine Immunisation services across the 18 LGAs of the State has begun to yield fruits.

He said : "As you all know, the benchmark used in assessing our vaccination effort is the 3rd dose of Pentavalent vaccine (Penta-3) and the records have it that State’s real Penta-3 coverage for January-December 2018 is 79%. This is the true picture of our recent records and renewed attitude. "

Governor Akeredolu said his administration will continue to improve the working condition of health workers to boost their morale towards delivery of immunization and other services.

He said " As a responsible and responsive government that has recently employed hundreds of health workers for the secondary facilities managed by the State Hospitals’ Management Board (HMB) despite lean resources, we shall continue to improve the working condition of our health workers to boost their morale towards delivery of immunization and other services. "

The governor appreciated the development partners - the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and the supervising agency of the Federal Government – the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), for their supports.

Jobs/Vacancies / $1.3bn Deep Sea Port In Ondo’ll Create 20,000 Jobs — Akeredolu by joshuaakindele7(m): 2:24pm On Jan 28, 2019
Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu has said that the proposed $1.3 billion Multipurpose Deep Sea Port in the state would create job opportunities for 20,000 people in the Ilaje coastal areas of the state.

Akeredolu He said the feasibility study has been completed and forwarded to the Nigeria Port Authority, NPA.

He said these in Akure during the presentation of the report of the consultants to the state Executive Council and stakeholders of the coastal communities.

He said: “The port will offer between 7000 to 10,000 job opportunities while the Free Trade Zone FTD will offer between 9,500 to 10,000 employment opportunities.

“We are doing things for the generation to come. I have always believed that there should be a beginning. We have started, there is no going back. “I was privileged to travel with President Buhari to the Netherlands. We went on a boat and visited the ports. I told him, if anything like this must happen in Nigeria, it must be in Ondo State. Not only that, the President has said it most of the times that he knows that Ondo is the right place for a deep-sea port.

“We should not play politics with everything. It is not our making but providence has put us where we are today. Where we are today, is the best place to have a deep-sea port.

“Ours, as a state, is to prepare the ground and show the feasibility and bankability. Can Ondo State do it? No, Ondo State cannot build or own a port. But there are many people who are willing to invest.

“The Chinese, Dutch, and others are interested because this will be a West African port not just for the country. It is not that we are looking for money to build a port but we are looking for investors and they will invest here.’’

According to the feasibility study, the 75-kilometre shoreline is a challenge for the development of a deep-sea port and is characterised by wetland and mud sedimentation.
