The All Progressives Congress (APC) says President Goodluck Jonathan lacks the capacity to tackle the challenges facing the country. He has not been able to do anything in six years, even if given more years, nothing would change, the party claimed. ”The President has finally admitted that the two main challenges facing the country are corruption and insecurity, and seems to be telling Nigerians to give him more time to tackle the problems. But the truth is that he lacks the capacity to fight and defeat these challenges, whether in six or 10 years,” the party said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. ”A President who has spent the last six years trying to diagnose the main problems facing the country will apparently need another four years to plan how to tackle the challenges. By then, all of us would have been buried under the rubble of corruption and our country would have been decimated by insecurity. It is therefore time for Nigerians to vote in a President who will hit the ground running, a President who will tackle the problems of corruption and insecurity headlong, without giving excuses for failure,” it said. The opposition slammed the Jonathan administration as corrupt, noting that a corrupt government can never fight corruption. ”Mr. President said he wants to put in place the institutions to tackle corruption before taking on the canker worm that has almost destroyed the fabric of our society. Pray, whatever happened to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)? Were they not institutions specifically created for the purpose of tackling corruption, but which the Jonathan Administration chose to castrate? ”There is no better way to say this: President Jonathan lacks the political will to tackle corruption, and he will not tackle it if he spends 60 years in office,” the statement read. The APC also criticized the way Jonathan has handled Boko Haram insurgency. According to the party, the president missed the chance to nip the menace in the bud when it just started, as he was busy blaming everyone. ”Had the President learnt a lesson or two from the crushing defeat of the Maitatsine sect by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, which signalled the death knell of the sect that is a precursor of Boko Haram, the insurgency that is daily claiming the lives of our citizens would have been defeated early on. ”It is too late in the day for President Jonathan to engage in sophistry over the twin evil of corruption and insecurity. He has reached the limit of his capacity to tackle these challenges and it is time to allow those with necessary political will and capacity to take on the challenges before they crush the country,” the party said.

Have you ever passed by Ojota going towards Maryland in Lagos? Then you would have noticed the Olusosun dumpsite that stinks to the high heavens. The news is that Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said yesterday that it would soon turn the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota into a golf course. Tagged as Nigeria’s most popular refuse dump, Olusosun has been a subject of foreign documentaries in the past because of the many activities of scavengers at the site. The managing director of LAWMA, Mr Ola Oresanya, said the golf course project would come under the agency’s second 10-year-rolling plan. “In the rolling plan, we are focusing downstream and our downstream is at the disposal sites. Our landfills development is a real focus, we already sign contract for development of our state of the heart landfills sites at Epe and Badagry. And those landfill sites are the real focus for the next rolling plan and a site also will be located in Ogun state. That is around Mowe/Ibafo area that we took over. Then we will close down the Olusosun dumpsite completely and turn it into golf course. We will continue to build transfer stations and material recovery plants in Lagos”. “Those are parts of the ten year rolling plan and we will increase our waste conversion to almost 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the wastes we generate in Lagos. The wastes will now be converted to something very useful within that ten years rolling plan. Then, we want to make sure that we get the economics of waste management very well and the economics must be perfect within the next ten year. So those are the key ingredients of those plans.’’ |

The three-time world heavyweight champion, who has Parkinson’s disease, was being treated by his team of doctors and was in a stable condition, said his spokesman, Bob Gunnell. “He went into the hospital this morning,” Gunnell said. “He has a mild case of pneumonia and the prognosis is good.” Gunnell declined to say where the 72-year-old Ali was being kept in hospital. No other details were released due to the Ali family’s request for privacy, he said. Ali appeared in public in September to attend a ceremony in his hometown of Louisville for the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. He did not speak. Ali retired from boxing in 1981 and devoted himself to social causes. He travelled the world on humanitarian missions. Ali received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George Bush in 2005. The Muhammad Ali Centre in Louisville is dedicated to Ali’s humanitarian causes and also showcases his boxing career. Ali and his wife, Lonnie, have homes in Paradise Valley, Arizona; Berrien Springs, Michigan; and in Louisville. |

A commercial motorcycle operator, yesterday, has beaten a seven- month pregnant woman to coma along Lagos-Badagry expressway, near Oluti bus stop in Lagos State. The woman was said to have paid the unknown rider a stipulated amount of money to convey her from Iyana Iba to First Gate bus stop, Maza Maza. According to an eyewitness, who identified herself simply as Mama Bola, the pregnant woman, Feyisara, when she regained consciousness in a private hospital, along Old Ojo Road, Agboju area, said the agreement was for the rider to move her to First Gate only for him to stop near Oluti, screaming at her to get off from the motorcycle. The source said Feyisara disclosed that an argument ensued and the rider wanted to move the bike but she held his clothes tight, preventing him from escaping. According to the woman, “The pregnant woman, Feyisara said she had paid the okada rider the agreed amount only for him to lie that Alakija was the destination she told him. So, when they reached Alakija, he ordered the woman to get off but she refused insisting that she wouldget off at her destination. So, when the desperate rider wanted to escape and the woman stopped him, he attempted to remove her hands from his clothes but to no avail. The man parked the machine and forcefully removed her hands. The woman said she had no choice than to go after his private part. An action which probably angered the man as he punched her in the neck and the woman fell on a stone and was rolling on the ground when sympathisers saw her and took her to a private hospital. She was bleeding”. She said meanwhile, the rider had zoomed off to an unknown destination. http://leadership.ng/news/396709/okada-rider-beats-pregnant-woman-coma |
