The post above covers most of what you can do for him. Daily folic acid intake and malaria prophylaxis with any antimalarial prescribed by his Doctor.(we use proguanil)

You guys should try to keep him hydrated (drinking plenty of water) and protect against mosquito exposure/malaria or any infection at all.

Any kind of stress whether physical or otherwise is not for him, extreme temperature exposures should be avoided too.

For him, prevention is better than cure. Following these rules will help to reduce the frequency of crisis he will encounter but doesn't eliminate the crisis.

There are times he'll have joints and body pains mild enough to be relieved with common analgesics but some may be extremely severe enough to warrant stronger prescription analgesic.

He must be taken to hospital when he's sick for proper management and care(no home remedies), pay mind to his health complaints.

Some kids are taken in and out of the hospital quite often while it's a rare occurrence for others. it all depends on how much his family invests in his wellbeing and luck to an extent.

You guys give him the best you can, support him emotionally too and hope for the most desirable outcome.

My heart goes out to the young man. It's a battle for survival, you guys don't give up on him. He can win this.

I've seen a case of SCD diagnosed for the first time at 39 in a first time mother in labour.

Of course she didn't accept she had Sickle cell disease 'cause she'd never been told or diagnosed prior and the investigation had to be repeated after much vexing and arguments from her.

It must have been very very mild for her to live with it undiagnosed till that age. Some people are that lucky.

From Family hx, 5 siblings 3 late, 2 surviving and she's one of the two survivors. Guess her other 3 siblings weren't as lucky.

My cousin is one. She is an accountant now. She take folic acid and anytime she says she is weak, know she is really weak and need to rest. Sometimes she will be full of energy today and will be so busy, the next day she is on drip.

Keep him away from junk food, vegetables and fish are highly recommended, vitamins and folic acid intake must be on a daily basis, keep away from high energy exerting activities, mosquito nets must be around to lessen malaria attacks and make sure you have a pediatrician who will manage him.

Though the road ahead will be bumpy but good management will be very key. My elder brother is a carrier of sickle cell and the journey wasn't a joke but we pulled through as a family, today he is married with kids who are AS.

Best advice I will give you as a doctor, is that he should be taken to a federal medical centre or a teaching hospital, and demand to see a pediatric hematologist..(pediatrician specialized in sickle cell management).

Having a sickled cell child is not a death sentence, with proper management, your child will live long in Good health. Don't expose the child to any form of cold. Also protect the child from mosquito bite and prevent the child from going through stress. Eat good food
and vegetables and fruits and avoid junks food. Of course don't give any multivitamin that contains iron they can't tolerate it. With God in your side. The child will live healthy.
If you can afford it Try stc 30 for the child call/ chat and let us talk about it. People on stc30 hardly have crisis. It is well with you and your nephew

First and most important thing is to register him in a reputable sickle cell clinic close to you, where he will going for regular appointments, then you'll be given a list of medications, that he will be on for life which will reduce the numbers of crisis and complications that may arise from sickle cell disease later on in life. You will also be throughly educated about the disease and things to avoid and danger signs to look out for.
Plasse register him in one as soon as possible, and attend the clinic as often as the doctor asks you to.
May God grant you strength, having a child with sickle cell disease is not easy at all, but with the right care and treatment, many of them will do well and live long.

Nothing special we just treat him for malaria and typhoid when he is sick. But he just had his first crisis. He is not recovering reason for the full blood count and checking his blood group and genotype.

My nephew's genotype result came out today, he is an SS patient. Since he was born, he has this yellowish eyes and slim body.

I'm not gonna lie...I miss Nigeria sometimes which makes me flirt with the idea of splitting my time there when my kids are older. I miss my family, my friends and the sense of community.

But then I remember lack of internet and electricity, horrific healthcare system, bad roads, bigotry, lack of value for human life, insecurity, police brutality, immense corruption, tribalism, crumbling or non-existent economy and a million other horrible things. This quickly resets my mind.

My solution which I'm currently working on is to bring my sisters and my best friend over to live in Sydney with me and make good living for themselves. Then I won't have any business with Nigeria anymore except to visit my parents every two years.

So to answer your question: no, nein, never!!!

Your thinking is in line. Nigeria has a way of making the rich, poor, skilled and unskilled cry. Graduates have been reduced to internet beggars and lazy youths as described by my dear president.
