its not like that. the johesu caused it. if you pressure the govt to make your salary the doctors', then you might as well increase the doctors!Actually, in the well run private hospitals, consultants, fresh ones earn about 700 to 800, as my friends now do. Those wthat run their own setup earn up to a million average.
but to stop all this nonsense, the govt should privatize the whole system, while strenghtening health insurance. that is the long term solution.

I think the solution to this nonsense is to simply privatise the whole hospitals.After that, anybody can be anyhing he wants to call himself.
Nigeria is a mad place. Ssanu wants to be same as ASUU, poly wants to be same as university, college of education wants to be equated with university education degrees, traditional birth attendants want to be equated with nurses, technologists want to be equal to pathologists, state govt employees want the same salary with federal govt workers..... Nigeria is a mad house!!!!!

I used take 50kobo to primary school then as pocket money and i still returned home with 25k or 10k after i had bought one cup of groundnut and one wrap of Baba dudu. NSTA bus fare was just 1 naira then. Lol.

the poster is a joker. i do not know whether he has ever been in within the four walls of a hospital.
in fact, it is the only meaningful thing for the guy to do.
its thensame over here in ife. Except for a very very few pts i see, like a matron who is vey sick that we are helpin specially by treating, and the very long stayers like the ortho pts whom we do not discharge, yhe wards are empty. the nurses, lab guys and the rest are just sitiing down doing nothing.
to continue wasting money on diesel is mere foolishness. the wis thing to do is to use only he nepa light.
mind you, same happens when johesu, which includes everybody except the doctors, goes on strike.
it is only when individual worker groups , like the pharmacists, physios, lab guys etc go on strike, that no one misses them. work just continues as near normal. that is why you have a union like johesu msde up of sooo many strange bedfellows.

i am a surgeon. i think there are ways the government can stop this johesu vs doctors nonsense:
1. fully privatize the health sector. then, the nurses, physios and lab guys can expect to be paid and treated same as the doctor. funny enough, as a surgeon, these nurses sometimes call me to do some hernia and small surgeries in their "shops". they do not pay me the same as the nurses they use.
2. privatize all the most easily privatizable parts of the hospital, which are the labs and pharmacies, and replace the rest with short term renewable contract jobs, maybe every three years.
3. declare an emergency in the sector, go abroad and bring another country'S health system, like india, china or malaysia, and impose it on the sector. govt should impose everything,including qualifications, relative pay, carrer paths. then wield the bigstick on ANYONE that as amuch as whimpers thereafter.
personally, i think the first will be most effective, as govt is too weak to resist the mushroom unions.some people belong to 3 or 4.

pumpingmachine: your thought process is faulty, surgeon. You don't see any use for other healthcare professionals and u believe they should be left out of the system. You made reference to d strike of the Johesu members at Ife. Well, I heard about it and how successful it was. Even medical training was jeopardised and medical students had to stay at home! So don't come on Naira land and feed us with poo.
I don't know of you've saved enough money to travel outside the country like your colleagues, I've been out severally and I always shake my head for the Nigerian healthcare system.
I know johesu has its excesses, but the root of the matter is overbearing attitude of the NMA and its members who believe that being a doctor is the biggest achievement they could make in their lives.
There should be room for everybody to grow, in fact we should encourage everyone to grow so that the industry could grow as well.
Right there in Ife, nurses give doctors a hard time, pathologists and scientists exchange blows regularly while quality of pharmaceutical drugs procured outside cannot be guaranteed when pharmacists are on strike.
You all need to come together and stop being driven by egos. Patients are dying at alarming rate and you all swore to save lives...do just that

in fact, i insist im not aware of anybody saying others are not important. my friend, the johesu agitation can work only as johesu. let them strike INDIVIDUALLY and see what will happen.

if you read my post at all, i recognized their services, but being important in a system does not mean you put yourself in a position you are not.
for instance, the cleaner is one of the most essential people in the hospital, and the man in the powerplant. it does not entitle him to say he should be the pharmacist.

i am a surgeon, and sincerely i am yet to meet a doctor who says the others who workin the health system are not important. the situation in nigeria is simply pathetic. we have developed a culture of not knowing our places, simply and short!
nowhere except nigeria does a patient call the nurse a doctor and she/he will not correct the patient!
its just like a traditional birth attendant that will not admit beijg diffrent from a nurse.
i workmin ife where some 8f he leaders, nay, creators of this johesu come from and know the way they run their issues. one of these creators even tried to get into amedical program in ghana!
The creation of johesu itself shows how critically essential the individual groups who formed it are.
they dare not strike alone, as nobodynwill know anything is happening, except perhaps the nurses. the physios, and this is not putting anydbody down, led by one of the national johesu hotheads, went on strike in ifefor 3 and a half months. even the ortho dept was running without hitches.
the pharmacists once tried it too, people just continued gtting their drugs fro outside as they used to do even when they were around.
As for the nurses, can anyone here actually claim honestly that serving food, serving drugs, geting the vital signs, makjng the beds and giving the patients a good psychological state are not doable by others? The nurses once went on strike for four months when i was in part 4. We got medical students and the relatives to fill in for the nurses. According to the study of the morbidiy and mortality that was carried out at ghe time, there was no diffrence! That is why when the nursesstrike, they have to lock up the equipment.
As for the kab guys, well, who wouldnt say yhey are essential? They however, and i know most of them know this, hopefully, are being largely replaced by automated systems. a million full blood counts can be run over a year by four lab guys! if automated systems are allowed (they obstruct its purchase and use in govt settings), at least three quarters of hem in the govt establishments wil be out of a job! note that i run e and u and abgs on my icu patients without seing any lab guy.
ALL I HAVE WRITTEN IS NOT WALLAHI TO DENIGRATE ANYBODY, but to point out why people should know their limits and act within it.

if you were a nurse, based on whose direction were you giving the care? who prescribed the drugs you were administering? only the blind would not see through your lies. if you were a phajrmacist, were you the one that discharged the patients?
while no doctor deprecates the role of the allied health workers, they certainly are, due to the chaos reighning in the country, messing up the system. of course, as we all know, about all of hem arue pretend doctors outside the hospital.
as i repeat again, privatize the health system, and everybody will be put in their appropriate level. unfortunately, these allied heath workers dho have the most to lose to privatization, are hell bent on hastening it. may the government soon give the hospitals the phcn treatment!

i dont know whether to laugh or cry at your fallacy. doctors pulled out of johesu?! stop lying and pulling the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting public. the reason why all of them have to join together againstbthe doctors is that if they go on strike individually, nobody will feel it. shows indeed how important they are for the system!
i dare the pharmacists to go on strike alone, and see if the hospital will stop functioning. same for the physiotherapists and even the labs. in my hospital, all of them have gone on strike individually for months, and the hospital was still running!
thats why they have to team up and gang up against the doctors, asking to be paid as thety are paid and given equal status, as if their jobs are the same. its all part of the nigerian mentally, most people are not actually proud of their jobs, nor satisfied with it. i dare say that many of these lab guys, physios and nurses actually wanted to study medicine, but couldnt for one reason or the other.

as i earlier said, privatize, and everybody will know their real level in a private setting.

if i were the government, I would simlly privatize the health system. It is the only, i repeat, the only way to cure the malady in nigerias health system. it has been done withnNepa, let it be done with all the health workers, doctlrs, nurses and all. I know the part of the health workers that will kick against that, because of privileges they get in nigerias health sector that their colleagues do not get in any other , i repeat, any other country in the world.
The closest to that is to bring another country's health system, like the uk, the us, austria, south africa-any good proper country- and impose it on the heath workers, all of them. The said health system should be copied wholesale, so that nobody gets away with bribing senators, reps and judges to get crazy laws passed and mad, unheard of privileges granted.
Which of the health workers will be comfortable with these common sense final solutions.
i know those who are taking advantage of the government unseriousness and the general sloppines in the civil service will kick against it.
