The historic Christian practice of asking our departed brothers and sisters in Christ—the saints—for their intercession has come under attack in the last few hundred years. Though the practice dates to the earliest days of Christianity and is shared by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, the other Eastern Christians, and even some Anglicans—meaning that all-told it is shared by more than three quarters of the Christians on earth—it still comes under heavy attack from many within the Protestant movement that started in the sixteenth century. Can They Hear Us? One charge made against it is that the saints in heaven cannot even hear our prayers, making it useless to ask for their intercession. However, this is not true. As Scripture indicates, those in heaven are aware of the prayers of those on earth. This can be seen, for example, in Revelation 5:8, where John depicts the saints in heaven offering our prayers to God under the form of "golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." But if the saints in heaven are offering our prayers to God, then they must be aware of our prayers. They are aware of our petitions and present them to God by interceding for us. Some might try to argue that in this passage the prayers being offered were not addressed to the saints in heaven, but directly to God. Yet this argument would only strengthen the fact that those in heaven can hear our prayers, for then the saints would be aware of our prayers even when they are not directed to them! In any event, it is clear from Revelation 5:8 that the saints in heaven do actively intercede for us. We are explicitly told by John that the incense they offer to God are the prayers of the saints. Prayers are not physical things and cannot be physically offered to God. Thus the saints in heaven are offering our prayers to God mentally. In other words, they are interceding. One Mediator Another charge commonly levelled against asking the saints for their intercession is that this violates the sole mediatorship of Christ, which Paul discusses: "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2:5). But asking one person to pray for you in no way violates Christ’s mediatorship, as can be seen from considering the way in which Christ is a mediator. First, Christ is a unique mediator between man and God because he is the only person who is both God and man. He is the only bridge between the two, the only God-man. But that role as mediator is not compromised in the least by the fact that others intercede for us. Furthermore, Christ is a unique mediator between God and man because he is the Mediator of the New Covenant (Heb. 9:15, 12:24), just as Moses was the mediator (Greek mesitas) of the Old Covenant (Gal. 3:19–20). The intercession of fellow Christians—which is what the saints in heaven are—also clearly does not interfere with Christ’s unique mediatorship because in the four verses immediately preceding 1 Timothy 2:5, Paul says that Christians should interceed: "First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and pleasing to God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim. 2:1–4). Clearly, then, intercessory prayers offered by Christians on behalf of others is something "good and pleasing to God," not something infringing on Christ’s role as mediator. "No Contact with the dead" Sometimes Fundamentalists object to asking our fellow Christians in heaven to pray for us by declaring that God has forbidden contact with the dead in passages such as Deuteronomy 18:10–11. In fact, he has not, because he at times has given it—for example, when he had Moses and Elijah appear with Christ to the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:3). What God has forbidden is necromantic practice of conjuring up spirits. "There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer. . . . For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, give heed to soothsayers and to diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you so to do. The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren—him you shall heed" (Deut. 18:10–15). God thus indicates that one is not to conjure the dead for purposes of gaining information; one is to look to God’s prophets instead. Thus one is not to hold a seance. But anyone with an ounce of common sense can discern the vast qualitative difference between holding a seance to have the dead speak through you and a son humbly saying at his mother’s grave, "Mom, please pray to Jesus for me; I’m having a real problem right now." The difference between the two is the difference between night and day. One is an occult practice bent on getting secret information; the other is a humble request for a loved one to pray to God on one’s behalf. Overlooking the Obvious Some objections to the concept of prayer to the saints betray restricted notions of heaven. One comes from anti-Catholic Loraine Boettner: "How, then, can a human being such as Mary hear the prayers of millions of Roman Catholics, in many different countries, praying in many different languages, all at the same time? "Let any priest or layman try to converse with only three people at the same time and see how impossible that is for a human being. . . . The objections against prayers to Mary apply equally against prayers to the saints. For they too are only creatures, infinitely less than God, able to be at only one place at a time and to do only one thing at a time. "How, then, can they listen to and answer thousands upon thousands of petitions made simultaneously in many different lands and in many different languages? Many such petitions are expressed, not orally, but only mentally, silently. How can Mary and the saints, without being like God, be present everywhere and know the secrets of all hearts?" (Roman Catholicism, 142-143). If being in heaven were like being in the next room, then of course these objections would be valid. A mortal, unglorified person in the next room would indeed suffer the restrictions imposed by the way space and time work in our universe. But the saints are not in the next room, and they are not subject to the time/space limitations of this life. This does not imply that the saints in heaven therefore must be omniscient, as God is, for it is only through God’s willing it that they can communicate with others in heaven or with us. And Boettner’s argument about petitions arriving in different languages is even further off the mark. Does anyone really think that in heaven the saints are restricted to the King’s English? After all, it is God himself who gives the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues. Surely those saints in Revelation understand the prayers they are shown to be offering to God. The problem here is one of what might be called a primitive or even childish view of heaven. It is certainly not one on which enough intellectual rigor has been exercised. A good introduction to the real implications of the afterlife may be found in Frank Sheed’s book Theology and Sanity, which argues that sanity depends on an accurate appreciation of reality, and that includes an accurate appreciation of what heaven is really like. And once that is known, the place of prayer to the saints follows. "Directly to Jesus" Some may grant that the previous objections to asking the saints for their intercession do not work and may even grant that the practice is permissible in theory, yet they may question it on other grounds, asking why one would want to ask the saints to pray for one. "Why not pray directly to Jesus?" they ask. The answer is: "Of course one should pray directly to Jesus!" But that does not mean it is not also a good thing to ask others to pray for one as well. Ultimately, the "go-directly-to-Jesus" objection boomerangs back on the one who makes it: Why should we ask any Christian, in heaven or on earth, to pray for us when we can ask Jesus directly? If the mere fact that we can go straight to Jesus proved that we should ask no Christian in heaven to pray for us then it would also prove that we should ask no Christian on earth to pray for us. Praying for each other is simply part of what Christians do. As we saw, in 1 Timothy 2:1–4, Paul strongly encouraged Christians to intercede for many different things, and that passage is by no means unique in his writings. Elsewhere Paul directly asks others to pray for him (Rom. 15:30–32, Eph. 6:18–20, Col. 4:3, 1 Thess. 5:25, 2 Thess. 3:1), and he assured them that he was praying for them as well (2 Thess. 1:11). Most fundamentally, Jesus himself required us to pray for others, and not only for those who asked us to do so (Matt. 5:44). Since the practice of asking others to pray for us is so highly recommended in Scripture, it cannot be regarded as superfluous on the grounds that one can go directly to Jesus. The New Testament would not recommend it if there were not benefits coming from it. One such benefit is that the faith and devotion of the saints can support our own weaknesses and supply what is lacking in our own faith and devotion. Jesus regularly supplied for one person based on another person’s faith (e.g., Matt. 8:13, 15:28, 17:15–18, Mark 9:17–29, Luke 8:49–55). And it goes without saying that those in heaven, being free of the body and the distractions of this life, have even greater confidence and devotion to God than anyone on earth. Also, God answers in particular the prayers of the righteous. James declares: "The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit" (Jas. 5:16–18). Yet those Christians in heaven are more righteous, since they have been made perfect to stand in God’s presence (Heb. 12:22-23), than anyone on earth, meaning their prayers would be even more efficacious. Having others praying for us thus is a good thing, not something to be despised or set aside. Of course, we should pray directly to Christ with every pressing need we have (cf. John 14:13–14). That’s something the Catholic Church strongly encourages. In fact, the prayers of the Mass, the central act of Catholic worship, are directed to God and Jesus, not the saints. But this does not mean that we should not also ask our fellow Christians, including those in heaven, to pray with us. In addition to our prayers directly to God and Jesus (which are absolutely essential to the Christian life), there are abundant reasons to ask our fellow Christians in heaven to pray for us. The Bible indicates that they are aware of our prayers, that they intercede for us, and that their prayers are effective (else they would not be offered). It is only narrow-mindedness that suggests we should refrain from asking our fellow Christians in heaven to do what we already know them to be anxious and capable of doing. In Heaven and On Earth The Bible directs us to invoke those in heaven and ask them to pray with us. Thus in Psalms 103, we pray, "Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers that do his will!" (Ps. 103:20-21). And in Psalms 148 we pray, "Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his host!" (Ps. 148:1-2). Not only do those in heaven pray with us, they also pray for us. In the book of Revelation, we read: "[An] angel came and stood at the altar [in heaven] with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God" (Rev. 8:3-4). And those in heaven who offer to God our prayers aren’t just angels, but humans as well. John sees that "the twenty-four elders [the leaders of the people of God in heaven] fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints" (Rev. 5: . See the 52-year-old Delta State University, Abraka worker with the institution's library, Mr. Francis Okotie that was killed recently by suspected Fulani herdsmen. He was found dead a day after he was reported missing and did not come back home from his usual visit to his farm in Urhouka. Several reprisal attacks on Hausa folks in the said town by Abraka youths have occurred...as they vow to do more. Oasis magazine visited the Hausa quarters today and saw armed mobile policemen mounting guards for the Hausas, as we also saw other security men stationed along the express way and other strategic places in the town. Several security meetings by the community's leaders to find lasting solution to this menace have taken place, as residents hope that it yields results this time around. Late Mr. Francis is survived by a wife ( who also works in DELSU in the Department of Microbiolgy), 8 children with the eldest presently a corper in Anambra State.

All of the graces showered on Mary by the Holy Trinity, raised to her such a level as to be able to be the Supreme co-operator in Our Blessed Lord’s Redemption, just as we are each called and invited to participate in his Redemptive act. Our Blessed Mother’s role in salvation history was not limited to just giving birth to Jesus and providing him with love and necessities while he was an infant. Her maternal role .. as all mothers know .. extends well beyond diapers and dinners. She was called to be the highest participator in his redemption of mankind. That role does not come to an end because she is now in heaven along with him. In fact .. in one sense .. it becomes all the more elevated because she is now present to all men and women at all times like she could not be while she was still on earth. To that end .. Our Blessed Mother returns to earth at various times and places throughout history .. to continue perpetuating the fruits of Her Divine Son’s redemption. Now .. while she has appeared at various times and places .. we’d like to concentrate on two specific visitations .. and through these two .. focus on two devotional aspects of the faith. The first is her reported appearance to St. Dominic and the other is the reported apparition to St. Simon Stock. Each of these visitations occurred in the 12thcentury and introduced in a new and vibrant way ..two devotional elements into the faith life of ordinary Catholics. St. Dominic was the recipient of the Rosary and St. Simon Stock was the recipient of the brown scapular. Now a historical word first .. scholars and historians do not agree that these two men were the actual recipients of the Rosary and Brown Scapular. From a STRICTLY historical analysis .. the origins of these sacramentals are somewhat mysterious. 1 We know .. for example .. that the rosary was most likely a devotional prayer of the largely illiterate peasantry long before St. Dominic was born. There are writings and records that reference it .. in fact .. many centuries before St. Dominic. So we’ll talk about that history for a little bit – just by way of background. But the important thing to remember .. to always keep in the forefront is whether God’s will is being accomplished through these sacramentals. The exact details of the origins of one thing or another are often times shrouded in history and sometimes obscured by pious legend and local folklore etc. The bottom line is .. there is simply no way to know with unassailable certainty how various customs and practices and devotions began. What’s important is that the particular practice not be offensive to Catholic sensibilities AND that it helps a person grow in the spiritual life. Those are the basics .. on a much deeper level .. it helps greatly if the Church has approved and blessed and adopted the particular devotion as well as it being specifically endorsed by the Queen of Heaven. What has grown up around the rosary is a life of rich mediation on mysterious central to the faith. Historical records clearly document the growth of both the Scapular and the Rosary during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe. By the early 20th century they had gained such a strong following among Catholics worldwide that the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1914 stated: "Like the Rosary, the Brown scapular has become the badge of the devout Catholic.” The importance of this kind of practice has been upheld and advance by Our Lady herself in numerous apparitions following her private appearance to St. Dominic. Both at Lourdes and Fatima .. to name two Church approved public apparitions .. Our Lady specifically made mention of the Rosary .. Going so far as to actually call herself the Lady of the Rosary at Fatima. She said the Rosary along with St. Bernadette in Lourdes. So as to the question of an appearance to St. Dominic and what exactly transpired with specific regard to the Rosary itself .. we will leave that to historians to fight over. Now all that said .. what is interesting is that the Rosary and the Brown Scapular have sort of grown up together in the Church and have a sort of companion life. 2 You will be hard pressed to find a truly devout Catholic who doesn’t either recite the Rosary ..wear a Brown scapular or both. Now again … just to avoid any confusion .. these things are not required or demanded by the Church. They fall strictly into the realm of private devotion. It is not sinful to NOT say a rosary or wear a brown scapular. But Catholics who love the Faith .. like someone in love in the earthly sense .. is not satisfied with doing things on just a minimum level. When someone is in love and dedicated .. they stand out precisely because of the degree of their dedication. The truly committed person .. to any cause .. is always the one showing up for action above and beyond the call of duty. So too with the devotional life of Catholics. That’s why we call it DEVOTIONAL .. the person is DEVOTED. They want the maximum .. not the minimum. So it’s in that spirit that we approach the topic of the Rosary and Scapular. "TheRosary and the Scapularare inseparable". That was said by Lucia .. the oldest of the three seers at Fatima. In these apparitions, the Virgin Mary called herselfThe Lady of the Rosaryand in one of the final Fátima appearances on October 13, 1917 had a brown scapular in one hand and a rosary in the other. The Lady of the Rosary, encouraged the praying of the Rosary and the wearing of the brown scapular. Some theologians also emphasize that the Fatima messages do not just prophesy dangers, but include a package of solutions in which the Rosary and the scapular are revealed as "mystical weapons of defense." So .. first the Rosary .. Catholic tradition holds that Our Lady made 15 specific promises to Christians who pray the rosary. They range from protection from misfortune to meriting a high degree of glory in heaven. Lucy at Fatima said .. that Our Lady told her .. "There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.” The fifteen promises are .. 3 1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary. 3. The rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the heart of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5. The soul which recommend itself to me by the recitation of the rosary shall not perish. 6. Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not die by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life. 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church. 8. Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise. 9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary. 10. The faithful children of the rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven. 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the rosary. 12. All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death. 14. All who recite the rosary are my son, and brothers of my only son Jesus Christ. 15. Devotion of my rosary is a great sign of predestination. The Rosary is little else than a string of beads used to keep track of the prayers said while thinking on a particular mystery of the life of Our Blessed Lord. It usually consists of 5 sets of ten beads .. each one having a Hail Mary prayed on it .. with an Our Father prayed on the single bead before it and a Glory Be immediately after. 4 Each set is called a decade .. in recognition of the 10 Hail Mary's. Usually five sets are considered one rosary and it takes about 15 minutes to pray – roughly. The point is not to mumble out 50 Hail Mary's .. and five our fathers and Glory Be's. It's to spend the amount of time if takes to say those prayers .. reflecting on a given aspect of Our Lord’s life and the plan of salvation history. Let’s move on to the Brown Scapular for a moment.A scapular is a garment worn by religious .. like nuns and monks .. over the shoulders (scapula), and hanging down in front and back, usually to about the bottom of the habit. It developed as a practical garment, protecting the habit during work, and was in time invested with spiritual significance, consecration or dedication to God. Like the scapulars of members of religious orders and communities .. there are small scapulars that are derived from them which represent a particular devotion or spirituality, usually associated with a particular community. Such a scapular is two pieces of cloth (generally about an inch square), connected by cords and worn over the head. It often has a picture or a particular color, depending on the spirituality it stands for. The best known and most highly esteemed scapular, and the one most favored by the Church, and by the Blessed Virgin in many of her apparitions, is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Those who wear it practice it a special devotion to Mary and say a rosary every day. 5 In addition, the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. This, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular: "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." This mustnotbe understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance. Wearing the scapular indicates a special devotion and consecration to Mary. No one should undertake it who is not spiritually prepared to live in accordance with it.If someone wants to know why Catholics have all these “things” in the faith .. like rosaries and scapulars .. and other things like medals .. and statues and holy cards etc .. the answer is pretty simple. Our world is a material world. Many things in our material world have symbolic meaning as well as their own individual simpler meaning. Fire is fire .. but also symbolizes power and authority. Water is water .. but also symbolizes purity and strength and beauty etc. Objects serve as symbols of other things and signs and symbols help us understand what is happening at a given moment .. and to make us aware of deeper truths. Think of what is happening on all levels of your psyche when some angry people burn your country’s flag. On the simple level .. a piece of cloth is being burned. But on another level .. what that signifies strikes at you and causes a gut reaction. So too in the life of the Catholic Church. Symbols carry a great weight with them. Endowed as sacramentals .. they carry even more weight than just a symbol .. they become a means to grace. Think of a crucifix .. when someone reverently kisses it. We can’t kiss Jesus directly .. at least not yet .. but short of the actual reality .. do not think that the feet of Jesus in heaven are not showered with the love of your kisses here on earth. So too with a rosary or a scapular. These sacramentals carry an emotional .. and psychological weight tot hem. But they also carry a supernatural weight to them because they are reminders and resources for our eternal lives. 6 They connect us to the reality to which they point us in a real manner .. through the order of grace. And the reality to which they point us is eternal salvation. For this reason .. the devoted souls who wear the brown scapular actually participate in the reality of its promise given by Our Lady .. That promise goes like this .. “Whosoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and pledge of peace." Notice the phrase .. a sign of salvation. It does bring salvation .. but points to the reality of salvation. Its important to distinguish here .. these sacramentals are not magic. They do not .. by themselves confer grace .. but they prepare the person who wears or uses them to receive grace and disposes that person to cooperate with it. Think of them like a wedding ring with supernatural richness attached to it. It is a symbol of marriage. But much more. It reminds you of your marriage. It recalls to mind your marital promises. It endows you with a strength to live faithfully. And it’s a public witness to your life and beliefs. Coming as they have from the Queen of Heaven’s own example as she has presented herself countless times with them .. The Rosary and the Scapular are great assists in achieving what they point to .. the Heavenly Kingdom. http://www.latinmassjax.org/Rosary%20&%20Scapular.htm
