I am planning to travel to the US sometime this year. I will be about 33wks then.
I have my visa( which was given to myself and my family)but in the process of interview we were asked if we have a plan of giving birth in the state but we said no.

here are my concerns:

What If they ask me at the immigration why am in the US.
What is the best response.
Do I go with my 18 month old child to avoid any suspicion
Do I make some hospital payment before I go or I hold some cash?

Regarding the $3,600, like I said it is the [b]hospital bill only that is in the range of $2,400 to $3,600 after the 40% discount [/b]is applied if you pay within the first 30days. So this certainly does not include the epidural fees at all.

ah ahn but midwife too na work na, so they will also get paid but don't worry, I will clarify all these questions when I call them tomorrow and give you feedback. Thanks for bringing up these key points o, because one does need to consider them

Please understand my message clearly.Like i said,the hospital fees includes the epidural MEDICATION.please try to confirm what i have said from anyone that used epidural and has a breakdown of their bill from Gwinnett, the hospital itself or the anesthesiologists office.
The $500 prepaid or $1,200 on the day of labour is the anesthesiologist's fee.it does NOT include the medication.Using epidural makes the HOSPITAL fees higher than someone that didn't use asides the $500/$1,200. Gwinnett is a good and affordable hospital but their bills aren't straightforward so we should all be aware and prepare accordingly..

In other news,has anyone looked into Emory East side medical center?It's in the same Gwinnett county in ATL and their hospital bill is a fixed $3,600 so there are no surprises.
Please anyone with personal experience or friend/family should share......and the doctors office/fees used as well

1. please can you find out from your doctors how much circumcision is?
I had planned to use Dr. Soyoola - he charges $250 for circumcision. I may not use him any more though I'm not sure, I am exploring the Gwinnett OBGYN option which is much cheaper at $1800 (Dr. Soyoola said $2,475 after I negotiated)

2. please can you find out from gwinnett OBGYN group how much circumcision is ?
Unfortunately I just checked my notebook and noticed I didn't write the cost. I just tried calling them now but the office is closed, I will try again tomorrow but if I'm correct, I think she mentioned $150 or $180

3. Have you added epidural to this bill as well?
No, the bill stated does not cover epidural. In one of my earlier posts, I mentioned that my friend who gave birth at Gwinnett paid $500 for Epidural, a separate cost, but warned that it will cost $1,200 if you don't pre-book and only decide to use it when you are already in labour. I personally do not plan to use epidural.

well faith is a good thing and all things being equal I will pay no more than that (note that this is for hospital bill only). But indeed I will take your advice and budget the upper limit i.e. $3,600 just to be on the safe side

Chei, I was not aware of this to be honest. I will confirm this when I call them tomorrow. But that doesn't really worry me so much, as long as I can be assured that the midwife is very experienced. My sister in the UK was telling me that was exactly the case when she gave birth there - the OBGYN is never present, just the midwife, unless there is a complication. I was talking about the epidural medication not the anesthesiologist fee. For people planning to use the epidural,it may not be a $3,600 max.You can confirm this information from the hospital or the anesthesiologist's office. the $500 is a fee for the anesthesiologist alone.It doesn't cover the medication.
I don't want to tamper with your faith but are you aware that if you pay the $500 and you don't use the epidural,you get refunded the full amount? Labour pain no be here ooh...
To also cut costs,one can skip circumcision and come and do it in lagos. No be all of them too sabi anyway.Some people have had to come back to re-do their circumcision in Naija
Did your sister have her baby in the UK or US?if it's UK,it was free naa. If one is paying all these thousands of dollars, the least one should expect is an OBGYN for the delivery proper.

GenoMI: Cheiii @ MIHS mamas, I sympathise with you , but don't worry God dey. For those looking for other options apart from the Border Town (I hail una border people oo), why not look into Gwinnett (in Atlanta) also? This is a summary of the costs I have so far:

1. Hospital Fees: $2,400 - $3,600 after discount if you pay within 30 days (40% discount)

2. Dr Fees: Dr Oduro- $2,100
Dr Soyoola - $2,475 (this was after I used all my power to price from $2,675 )
Gwinnett group of OBGYN's - $1,800

I called last week. They asked me to fax over my medical records which I am yet to do and I will keep the house posted once I do.

All in all, you can use Gwinnett for an uncomplicated delivery for approximately $4,200 - $4,875 depending on the obgyn used.
My friend who delivered there says to budget less than $500 for paediatrician and about $250 max for circumcision.

With these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince you and not confuse you that we have other options too

I understand this Gwinnett bill you stated doesn't cover the epidural (medication)
please i do not mean to confuse the house but the epidural medication is charged under the hospital fees and the anesthesiologist is the one that usually charges $500 prepaid separate from hospital fees.please feel free to correct me if i am wrong

Also,i like your faith calculating with $2,400.I suggest you budget with $3,600 and you can spend the change if you get any on extra shopping smiley.

The financial lady said I will receive the bill in 8-10 business days, I'm yet to receive my bill. I ve received birth certificate which I processed thru vital records and it was sent to my apartment in 24 hrs. I'm still trying to get how to go about the passport issuance.

If i may correct you,what you received at home is a birth notification not a birth certificate,you go to pick up your BC and you pay a fee for it
Since you are in ATL, you can also get a Nigerian passport instead of a visa.Its cheaper and has a longer duration

If ur baby is on d large side, huggies is the best. Bc of the publicity of toujour here I went for it and regreted using it.
No diaper will ever beat huggies. Unless of course u bought fake one. Except my baby poopoed, I don't bother to change till evening.
Pple ran away from it mostly bc of the price but at d end of the day, its still economically better. Depends on where u do ur shopping too.
