STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE President Tinubu commends Nigeria's Armed Forces for protecting democracy in Benin Republic President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the gallantry of Nigeria's military on Sunday for responding swiftly to the request by the Government of Benin Republic to save its 35-year-old democracy from coup plotters who struck at dawn today. Acting on two separate requests from the Government of Benin, President Tinubu first ordered Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to enter the country and take over the airspace to help dislodge the coup plotters from the National TV and a military camp where they had regrouped. The Republic of Benin, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Note Verbal, requested immediate Nigerian air support "in view of the urgency and seriousness of the situation and to safeguard the constitutional order, protect national institutions and ensure the security of the population." In the second request, the authorities in Benin requested the deployment of Nigerian Air Force assets within Beninoise airspace for surveillance and rapid intervention operations under Benin-led coordination. The Benin government also requested Nigerian ground forces, "strictly for missions approved by the Beninese Command authority in support of the protection of constitutional institutions and the containment of armed Groups." Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said all the requests have been fulfilled, with Nigerian ground forces now in Benin. "Ours is to comply with the order of the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces, President Tinubu," he said. Constitutional order was upended in the Republic of Benin, Nigeria's neighbour, when some soldiers led by Colonel Pascal Tigri announced a coup on Sunday morning. The putschists seized the National TV and claimed they had toppled President Patrice Talon and suspended all democratic institutions. It took some hours before the government's loyal forces, assisted by Nigeria, took control and flushed out the coup plotters from the National TV. In his remarks after the restoration of the democratic and constitutional order, President Tinubu saluted the Nigerian armed forces for standing firm as a protector and defender of democracy. “Today, the Nigerian armed forces stood gallantly as a defender and protector of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin on the invitation of the government. Our armed forces acted within the ambit of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. They have helped stabilise a neighbouring country and have made us proud of their commitment to sustaining our democratic values and ideals since 1999. Nigeria stands firmly with the government and people of the Republic of Benin." Bayo Onanuga Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy) December 7, 2025 |

Soldiers from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Ghana are being sent to Benin after West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS ordered the immediate deployment of elements of its standby force to the country following an attempted coup on Sunday. Addressing the nation on state TV, Benin President Patrice Talon said the situation was "totally under control". https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20251207-live-apparent-coup-attempt-in-benin-govt-claims-army-has-situation-under-control |
Faithful007:Probably knew the coup was going to occur today. That's the only explanation for that quick response. It seems Nigerian and French planes were already on standby in anticipation. |

Nigerian Air Force conducts Multiple Precision airstrikes on fleeing coup plotters in Benin Republic By: Zagazola Makama The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out strategic airstrikes on fleeing elements of the recently foiled military coup in the Benin Republic, security sources have confirmed. Zagazola Makama was reliably informed by sources that the operation targeted coup plotters and their equipments attempting to escape Cotonou in armoured vehicles following the swift intervention by loyalist forces in the country. The airstrikes, executed over the past 30 minutes, involved multiple coordinated strikes carried out by Nigerian fighter jets operating within Beninese airspace. “The operation was meticulously planned and executed. Our objectives were clear: neutralize fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners,” the sources stated. The sources emphasized that all actions were conducted in conscent of Benin authorities as well as in strict adherence to international protocols to minimise collateral damage while maximising operational impact. Eyewitnesses reported multiple explosions in strategic locations across Cotonou, confirming the effectiveness of the strikes. The sources said that the strikes successfully immobilized the armoured vehicles and disrupted escape routes used by the coup plotters and killing several of them. The intervention comes in the wake of a failed coup led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who had briefly attempted to dissolve state institutions and seize full military control of Benin Republic. Following the foiled takeover, key insurgent elements attempted to flee southward, prompting Nigeria’s rapid aerial response. “The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to safeguarding regional security and protecting the sovereignty of neighbouring states,” A top Military officer said. “Our operations are intelligence-driven, precise, and aimed at preventing any spillover that could threaten our borders.” Zagazola report that this marks one of the most decisive and high-profile Nigerian Military cross-border operations in recent West African history, illustrating Nigeria’s readiness to act decisively against destabilising threats in the region. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full impact of the airstrikes and to coordinate with Beninese authorities for follow-up operations, including the apprehension of surviving coup plotters. |

Faithful007:Ever heard of CAATSA Sanctions? Do you know how dependent Nigeria's oil & gas sector is dependent on American companies from Chevron to SLB? As far as Nigeria is concerned the US has tools to hurt us real bad. |
GreenandGold:If the United States wants to, they can ground SAAF Gripen and Hawk aircrafts. Both systems use American engines and parts. What I advocate usually is a mix of systems. Nigeria cannot buy Russian systems, the US will sanction the living day light out of us. Turkish helicopters use American engines, also prone to US sanctions. I do agree that buying American aircrafts doesn't seem wise, but options are limited in this area. |

GreenandGold:Remember Nigeria has JF-17 thunder and Ethiopia has the SU-35 on order. |
Faithful007:Some sources are even quoting $4.3 Billion. I don't think it's a good deal for 17 planes, training, maintenance + ammunition. At 2 Billion, it would have been fantastic. Anyway congratulations to Colombia, they get to retire the Kfirs with a formidable aircraft. |

Faithful007:According to SAAB, Colombia is paying $3.6 Billion for 17 aircrafts. Saab has today signed a contract with the Colombian Government and received an order for 17 Gripen E/F fighter aircraft. The order value is EUR 3.1 billion and deliveries will take place 2026-2032. https://www.saab.com/newsroom/press-releases/2025/saab-signs-contract-for-gripen-ef-with-colombia So comparing on face value alone, I think Nigeria is getting more value for money. The previous information I shared on the Colombia contract value is false. |
Colombia's 3.1 Billion Euro Gripen Move ✈️ Colombia has officially secured the supply of 17 Gripen E/F fighter jets through a deal valued at 3.1 billion euros. The agreement includes 15 Gripen E and 2 Gripen F aircraft, along with a large number of equipment and munitions. 📌 Saab announced that deliveries will take place between 2026 and 2032. It was noted that during this process, Saab outperformed the US-backed F-16 offer.

jteku:To be honest we need to give the Alpha Jets a rest. They have never been impressive platforms by any metric. To your question, these are retired units from the French Air Force. Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jets need to be retired too! We're going on 50 years with those planes, and the world has since moved on. So should we! |
