Not less than 45 members of the Boko Haram have been sentenced to between 3- 31 years in prison for terrorism.

A Federal High Court sitting in Kainji, Niger State, on Friday handed down the verdicts at the conclusion of the first phase of the trial during which 575 Boko Haram suspects were arraigned.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said 468 other suspects who had no case to answer were discharged and acquitted by the court.
34 cases were struck out while 28 suspects were remanded for trial in Abuja and Minna

Nigerian Army on Friday said the increase in crimes in coastal areas of the country compelled it to step up training and operations in the amphibious environment.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said this at Takwa Bay Island in Lagos State when he launched “Exercise Crocodile Smile II.”

According to him, the ‘Order of Battle’ 2016 provides for amphibious battalion in the island to keep the coastal area of Lagos State safe.

He said “a detachment of Nigerian Army has since been stationed on the island; more army presence will also be felt soon on the island and other parts of the country in line with the 2016 Order of Battle as fund becomes available.”

The army chief recalled that the first phase of the exercise which took place between August and September 2016 in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo and Rivers states recorded tremendous success.

Babakura Lawan sat under a tree and unbuttoned his shirt to show a host of scars on his shoulder, arm and back.

Lawan, who is part of a militia helping the Nigerian army in its fight against Boko Haram, the armed group that has pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

In July, as Lawan and his fellow militiamen provided cover for oil exploration workers, Boko Haram fighters launched an attack against them near Maiduguri, located in the country’s northeast.

“It was an ambush,” he told Al Jazeera, explaining that they were caught off guard due to the calmness of the area.

Severe thunderstorms have lashed South Africa, leaving at least three people dead and many more injured.

Damaging winds, destructive hail and torrential rain affected many parts of the country on Monday, with the area in and around Johannesburg seeing some of the worst damage.

Those who died were killed in traffic incidents attributed to the storms, according to the South African News network News24.

Many google Adsense publishers have seen the google Adsense no-reply message oftentime whenever their websites violates the google Adsense policy. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC has said it would need N80billion to procure meters for its customers in the South east zone.

The company said it had already spent N10 billion in metering its customers to ensure accuracy and exact billing power consumption pattern and would not relent until all its customers were metered.

The Company’s head of communication, Mr. Emeka Eze stated this in Awka during a town hall meeting with customers of the company.

Eze said the company inherited a metering gap of about 700,000 customers, which was supposed to cost about N80 billion, but having spent N10 billion already, the number of those requesting for it had reduced as it was still distributing them.

“Even as I speak to you, we are still distributing meters. We are doing it feeder by feeder, and that it has not gotten to you does not mean that we are not distributing. We will continue to do so until it goes round. We only urge our customers to go online and apply and not to give money to anyone as the meters are not for sale,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Samuel Onuoha, the company’s network manager explained to customers that meters ordered by the company had arrived the country and a fresh phase of distribution would start soon.

On Thursday, September 21, the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, described the rate of illiteracy in Nigeria as alarming. According to him, out of the about 170 million Nigerians, between 65 and 75 million people are illiterate in the country. According to Premium Times, he made the remark through a representative when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state in Birnin Kebbi. This was part of his visit in the state for a two-day International Literacy Day conference organised by the National Commission for Mass Education.

Mr Adamu said:

“Education is the bedrock of any country’s development and any country that does not educate its populace is bound to fail. “Unfortunately, in Nigeria we have a very large population of illiterates; the illiterates figure, considering our population, is unbecoming.” The minister was represented Jonathan Mbaka, the director of basic and secondary education, federal ministry of education, who said that the federal government was targeting educating out-of-school children. “The government is doing all it can to reduce the number of children that are out of school.

“This includes the adoption of inclusive education where every Nigerian will be given the opportunity to go to school, regardless of background, ethnicity and gender,’’ he said. Aisha Bagudu, the governor’s wife received commendation for reducing the number of out-of-school children and illiterates in Kebbi State through her Mass Almajiri Literacy and Poverty Alleviation Initiative (MALPAI). On his part, Governor Bagudu linked illiteracy to the high level of insecurity.

“We have an army of people whose inability to read can be exploited by divisive elements in the country,” he said.

He also said: “I am very proud that we are hosting eminent delegates from across the federation at the time like this, where there is tension, and fear in Nigeria. “For you to ignore fears that a few people cannot intimidate us is commendable. “Our destiny remains in our hands and not allowing inconsequential elements to determine our fate is also commendable.” Meanwhile, the federal government, through the Universal.....

The governor of Cross River state, Ben Ayade, has shown love towards alleged oldest woman in the state. She is said to be about 151 years old. The woman who was identified as Mary Ekwo gave birth to 17 children but seven of them died. Thereby, leaving her with only 10 children. Governor Ayade was reported to have awarded free home medical care to this woman. The news was shared by one of his aides, Prince Charles Ekanem IV, via his Facebook profile.
