EducationASUU Strike: We Are Not Sure When It Will End – Fagge by kado(op): 5:59pm On Oct 02, 2013
The President of Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge
has said that although the Union has begun
consultations among its members following
discussions with Vice President, Namadi
Sambo, it cannot confirm when it will call
off the ongoing strike.
Fagge spoke with journalists in Makurdi
shortly after the Union’s congress meeting
at the Benue State University.
According to him, the body’s position would
be made known to the public after
consultations are concluded.
President Jonathan had two weeks ago
delegated his Deputy, Sambo, to take over
negotiation with ASUU after several
efforts by Benue state Governor, Gabriel
Suswam-led Needs Assessment
Implementation Committee failed.
The Union leader maintained
that the struggle would
continue until the 2009 agreement was
met.
He added that all ASUU wants is
“implementation of the recommendation of
the National Coordinating Committee,
which would enable our universities to be
fully engaged in research to produce
graduates that would meet the test of
time.”
Fagge denied insinuation that it was
playing politics with the strike, insisting
that the federal government is the party
doing so.
Reacting on the threat by Governor Gabriel
Suswam to enforce the labour law of’ ‘ no
work no pay’ on the striking BSU lecturers
as from this month, if they fail to resume
work, the ASUU president urged him to go
ahead with his plan if he feels it is the best
option.
“Let Suswam go ahead and do whatever he
likes. Lecturers have said they cannot
continue working if the academic
environment is not conducive. If Governor
Suswam is not happy with ASUU’s stance,
then so be it.”

EducationSSANU Joins ASUU, Declares Indefinite Strike by kado(op): 10:55am On Oct 01, 2013
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities (SSANU) on Monday began
indefinite strike.
This followed by a unanimous resolution
adopted by members of the University of
Ibadan chapter of the association at a
congress held at the university Arts Theatre
in Ibadan.
The Chairman of the association, University of
Ibadan chapter, Dr Wale Akinremi, said that
the strike was total.
”This is as a result of the directive from our
National Executive Council; so, the strike is a
national strike.”
He said that the association should have gone
on strike for a very long time ”because of the
government’s provoking way of attending to
issues”.
” We have been short-changed by the
government in the area of subventions and we
cannot take it again ,” Akinremi said.
According to him, the education sector is the
bedrock of the nation’s development and
should be treated with care.
He said that there were other important
issues beside the subventions that needed to
be addressed.
Akinremi listed the issues as training, funding
and disparities in terms of payment.
He said: “Non-teaching members of staff are
wrongly placed in the education system, and
these issues must be holistically addressed.”
According to Akinremi, SSANU will continue
with the strike until it is call off by the
national body.

EducationNANS Threatens Action Against ASUU by kado(op): 12:25pm On Sep 28, 2013
The
National
Association
of Nigerian
Students,
NANS, has
threatened
to sue the
Academic
Staff
Union of
Universities, ASUU, to court over the
three-month old strike.
The National President of NANS, Yinka
Gbadebo issued the threat in his address
at the first senate meeting organised by
the union at the University of Port
Harcourt.
Gbadebo accused ASUU of making
outrageous demands from the Federal
Government.
He claimed that ten out of eleven demands
made by ASUU had been met, adding that
the only last demand which had to do with
the issue of earned allowance should not be
the basis to keep students at home.
“They are asking for change. Change must
first start with our lecturers. They are
clamouring for earned allowance, they are
clamouring for responsibility allowance.
Very very soon, we may resort to take laws
into our own hands.
“While on strike, lecturers
are still using government
properties. They are still living in
government accommodations, driving
government cars. If you are fighting
government, go and return all government
properties.
“We are saying, where is the interest of
the Nigerian student captured in all these
demands. In all of the demand of ASUU,
government has fulfilled 10 out of 11. What
more do they want? How long will they
continue to negotiate our future”, he said.
The students leader also alleged that
ASUU had been compromised by the
opposition party stressing that ASUU
members were often seen with members of
the All Progressive Congress, APC, in
Lagos.
Gbadebo, however, vowed to sue ASUU to
court if the strike continued.
“We are going to take ASUU to court. The
issues are very clear. Every right thinking
Nigerian knows that this issue of ASUU
strike has been politicized and that is the
truth. Each time Federal government
finishes meeting with the lecturers, the
next thing you will see is ASUU leaders
meeting with APC leaders in Lagos. What
for? He alleged.
The NANS president finally called on
ASUU to devise another means of
agitating for their demands.

EducationASUU Strike: We’ll Shut Pry, Secondary Schools — NUT by kado(op): 12:12pm On Sep 27, 2013
THE leadership of Nigeria Union of Teachers
(NUT) has vowed to ground both primary and
secondary schools in the country if the
Federal Government fails to resolve its feud
with the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) as soon as possible.
NUT president, Michael Olukoya, speaking at
a news conference in Abuja, on Thursday, said
the solidarity strike would be total, as
teachers across the country were being
mobilised.
He said though primary and secondary schools
had just resumed from vacation, NUT would
not hesitate to send the children back home
until the Federal Government honoured the
agreement reached with the lecturers.
He said this was part of the resolution of the
National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of
the union on Thursday, called to deliberate on
the state of the nation and to ready
arrangements for the celebration of the
forthcoming 2013 World Teachers Day
holding on October 5.
The teachers also demanded, among other
things, that the National Assembly should, in
the process of the ongoing constitution
review, remove primary education away from
the ambit of local governments in Nigeria.
“Both primary and secondary schools will be
shut in totality if the Federal Government
does not or continue to fail to respect the
agreement it entered with ASUU.
“We cannot continue to claim that we are
giant in Africa when our children leave to
Cotonou that is not up to Oyo State to
receive university education.
“At this point, we wish to register our strong
solidarity and sympathy with our professional
brothers in the universities, in their struggle
not just for improved condition of service but
for the return of quality education in the
universities through appropriate funding and
provision of infrastructural facilities.
“We also sympathise with our students in
these universities who are at the receiving end
of this unending conflict of two titans —
ASUU and Federal Government.
“The current struggle of ASUU is most
nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing.
We commend our university teachers for
remaining solid and unmovable in the face of
all threats,” he said.
Olukoya equally called on the Federal
Government to demonstrate responsiveness
and similar patriotism by granting the
demands of ASUU which, he said, were
“reasonable, just and fair.”
He also expressed regrets that Kogi, Benue
and Cross River states had remained
recalcitrant on the implementation of the
N18,000 national minimum wage and payment
of 27.5 per cent enhanced allowance to their
teachers.
Olukoya, however, said while teachers in Kogi
were currently on strike over minimum wage
and 27.5 per cent allowance, the Benue State
government had refused to pay minimum wage
to teachers in primary schools.
On primary school management, Olukoya
maintained that while the teachers were not
opposed to local government autonomy, “its
financial responsibility to primary education
should be built into consolidated account of
the federation, for the benefit of first-line
charge to primary education.”
He added that the lost glory of quality
education would continue to elude the nation
until the country rose to improve on the
quality of lives and work of teachers.

EducationNASU Will Join ASUU Strike Next Week by kado(op): 7:09am On Sep 25, 2013
AS strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the nation’s tertiary institutions enters its fourth month, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has indicated its resolve to embark on its own indefinite strike next week.

Speaking at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the trade union in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday, NASU’s general secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, said members of the union had not been paid for two months, despite working to keep university system running during the ongoing ASUU strike.

“ NASU will commence its own strike next week, because we have been working and government has refused to pay our salary. For us, it does not make sense to continue to keep the system running when we are not being paid. The reason for this is not known to us.

Government has not paid our salary for August and today is September 24; they are owing us two months’ salary and there is no way we can continue to do this work on empty stomach, while they run round the globe on full stomach,” he said.

The NASU’s general secretary, who said no reason was adduced for their non-payment, added that “ the unfortunate thing is that they have no explanation for non-payment of our salary. That is enough patience on our part, despite the fact that we have our grouse before with the Federal Government that things are not running well.

“ However, we think as Nigerians and parents, we don’t have to unnecessarily ground the system, but if you take this our maturity and level-headedness to mean stupidity, then, people who complain that we, in the university system have ruined the future of students by going on too many strikes imposed on us by government will have no reason not to understand, if we go on our own strike next week.”

Also speaking, the national president of NASU, Mr Ladi Iliya, blamed the National Assembly for fighting on their political interest and future at the expense of welfare of Nigerians.

The NASU president, who said the National Assembly should have deliberated on issue of persistent insecurity and ASUU strike when it resumed session, described the attitude of the legislators as shameful.

The labour leader decried issue of corruption, which he said was now an acceptable part of every transaction in the country, both in public and private sectors of the economy, adding that high cost of running the country today was a result of the endemic scourge of corrupt practices, which, he said had long bedevilled the system.

EducationASUU President Message To Student by kado(op): 10:58pm On Sep 23, 2013
Message from ASUU President
Dear Comrades, As the struggle to save
Nigerian University system is being
pursued, I’ll like to salute all our members
for their resoluteness in ensuring that the
2009 ASUU/Government Agreement is
implemented in accordance with the
Roadmap defined by the 2012 MoU. We
believe very strongly that the rot and
decay in the University System is not only
arrestable but also reversible. We believe
even more strongly that, the key to turning
round the University System lies in the
sincere implementation of the
Agreement.
What government has so far been doing is
no more than a repeat performance of a
one- act-play: all the deceptions,
propaganda, lies, mischiefs and such other
Shenanigans were tried by previous
Governments, including Military Juntas, but
our resolve to save the University System
and our Country remained unwaivered.

EducationASUU Vows To Continue Strike by kado(op): 7:04pm On Sep 22, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has blamed the rot in the Nigerian university system on the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission, Julius Okojie, saying his failure to insist on quality has bastardised Nigerian universities.

The lecturers also vowed to continue their strike unless the federal government honours the 2009 agreement it had with the union.

In a statement signed by its University of Ibadan branch chairman, Olusegun Ajiboye, ASUU renewed its call for the scraping or a total overhaul of the regulatory institution if the nation wishes to get it right in university education management.

While calling on the National Assembly to beam its searchlight on the activities of the NUC, Mr. Ajiboye said the recent NEEDS assessment report on universities reflects how much the commission has failed in its duties as a regulator.

According to him, the report undertaken by genuine academics contradicts NUC’s accreditation exercises which gave ‘controversial’ clean bill of health to most universities through “magomago accreditation.”

The union contended that only in a society like Nigeria would Mr. Okojie still remain in office after being heavily indicted in the report, saying “in sane climes, the NUC boss ought to have resigned through the revelations made in the NEEDS assessment report.”

Mr. Okojie had, last week, absorbed his commission of any wrongdoing in the rot plaguing public universities in the country, particularly as regards undeserved accreditation, blaming members of the ASUU instead.

Mr. Ajiboye, who described the statement credited to the NUC boss as ‘careless’, accused Mr. Okojie of using his cronies who can do his biddings to embark on accreditation.

He said the success of the 2011 elections was based on the patriotic zeal and contributions of genuine and patriotic ASUU members nationwide saying that was why the election was free of hanky-panky recorded in past elections.

The ASUU statement titled ‘Where Okojie Got It Wrong,’ insisted that the NUC boss is fond of using his ‘yes sir’ boys to do hatchet jobs during accreditations, thereby compromising quality most of the time.

The union said its almost three-month-old strike is fully on, adding that the it would not allow itself to be fooled again with ‘promisory notes’ of the federal government which had never worked in the past.

“ASUU cannot be blamed for NUC ‘magomago’ accreditations. Rather than blaming the Union, Okojie should take full responsibility for all the fraudulent deeds in the NUC, including the work and eat accreditations.

“The NUC knows the kind of academics they select for their ignoble exercises. These are cronnies of the big man in the NUC. They can never say no to his biddings. Nigerians should be proud of ASUU in it’s efforts at repositioning public universities in the country. One of these major efforts is the NEEDS Assessment Document.

“This was a product of a rigorous academic exercise carried out by dependable and credible members of our Union. Unlike the numerous faulty accreditation reports which had given these universities clean bill of health, the NEEDS Assessment Report stands out as a classical document of reference detailing the rot and decay in public universities in Nigeria. All well meaning Nigerians can see the contrast between okojie’s ‘packaged accreditation reports’ and a credible job done by ASUU.

“It has become very clear from the Needs Assessment that Okojie and his cohort of accreditors have fooled this country for too long. Enough they say is enough. Time is now for the Government to beam a searchlight on the activities of the NUC.

“The Education Committees in both the Senate and House of Representatives have an arduous task to do here. Nigerians are calling for dismantling of an omnibus body that has done the country more harm than good. NUC must go.

“Professor Julius Okojie cannot absolve himself from the rot in the university system by regulating quantity instead of ensuring quality delivery,” ASUU said.

Jobs/VacanciesThings That Can Go Wrong With Your Job Search by kado(op): 5:54pm On Jan 29, 2011
The bottom line is,  why are you still unemployed in spite of your serious efforts and strong desire to get the job of your choice? Many expect a simple, short and precise answer. Unfortunately there is nothing like that. The reason for this is that the employment process is complex, and usually in stages. The other reason is that the recruitment process is imprecise, varying from company to company, and from one individual responsible for recruitment to another. For you, it may just be that you are not getting one particular stage or skill right; for others, it may be two or three or more!
So what can be wrong? Below is a summary of the main issues. You will find the detailed presentation at

1.   Poor understanding of self.

   most of us do not know ourselves enough to make informed decision about our job/career direction.
   What skills do we have to provide a  possible clue on career direction
    job and career goal depends on the skills you have
   Skills are the foundation of job search. Employers want to know what it is you can do for them.
   Now do you have personal goals in life? Without a vision, most young people today are just drifting in the sea of life.

2.   poor understanding of the employers hiring process and attitude

   In most situations, employment/hiring have been turned to a two- lane expressway – where there is little or no contact (hence no information) between on-coming and on-going vehicles
   . For example, when   you desire to work for any organization what do you do? You approach the personnel department for information and possible assistance.
   Right? Wrong. The major role of personnel department in the recruitment process is to screen you out!
3.    Poor management of change arising from joblessness.

   Whether you are unemployed, under employed, employed by looking for a better job, or entering the work for the very first time, or entering after a long absence, you are facing change situation.
   And change affects our emotions – relief, anticipation, or renewal, or you may fell anger, sadness, fear, depression or confusion. These feelings are natural. The key to successful management of change (and attendant transition) is attitude.
   How much of you time, energy and money are you willing invest in yourself, or better still in your future?  Do you realize that looking for a job is indeed a full time job if you are unemployed? Are you ready to work at it?

4.   Ineffective job – hunt strategy.

   If you are not going to anywhere in particular, any road will lead you there.
   Where, in terms of which sector or industry or company or geographic locale would you like to work?
   If we assume that you have your job target, the question then, how to do you reach this objective? How do you get a shot at your dream job without which you stand no chance of getting it at all?
   Job seekers who want to succeed will have to do the knocking, the digging, the searching.

5.   Ineffective Resume / CV

   The basics of a resume/CV are that it should be letter perfect, neat, easy to read and organized. Easy part.
   The hard part is putting that resume to work, making it do as mush as a resume can do i.e. making it a successful sales brochure. But no matter how well – organized, how neat, how smoothly written your resume is, if it does not have any “sell” in it, it is not doing its job.
   Do you use your resume/CV effectively?

6.   Inadequate skills for passing job aptitude tests.

   It is to test the abilities of the applicants in the basic skills required to do the job effectively – comprehension, verbal and quantitative skills, quantitative ability, logical reasoning, speed and accuracy, specific job skills, etc.
   At any rate, it is a barrier you must adequately prepare to cross. So except you master these tests and perform well in them, your dream of getting a top flight job might suffer sudden – death

7.    Ineffective Application Letter

   The application letter (also referred to as cover letter ) is suppose to customize your Resume/CV for particular job.
   It should state how your experience and qualification meet the requirements of the job

8.   Inadequate preparation for job interview

   For any interview, thorough preparation is the cornerstone for making positive impressions at job interviews,
   For a start, you need to be unformed about the company/industry: key players, levels of remuneration, technology, success factors, etc.
   And the small davids that can lead to the fall of Goliath: do you know the venue of the interview not to get lost, and get to the place late? Are you properly dressed?

9 . Poor conduct and presentation.

   Qualifications are important but  the whole person is more important
   How much does that person come across? How enthusiastic/positive is this individual?
   It is not only about what you will say, but also about how you say it-non – verbal expressions
   Findings indicated that within the first few minutes of any personal meeting with somebody who has the power to hire you or screen you out, the decision has pretty much been made
   And now to your personality traits. For example, are you stable, honest, ambitious, courteous, etc? Employer has their way of discovering people with extreme behavior of any type.

10 . Poor interview skills

There are basically five questions you get at job interviews:
•   Why are you here? (Why do you want to work for us?)
•   What can you do for us?
•   What kind of a person are you?
•   What distinguish you from the other if people who have the same ability as you have? And finally
•   Can we afford you?
So if a job seeker does not have answers to these questions before any interview, then he/she hasn’t started to look for work. Same for some specific/uncomfortable questions.
