Former Governor of Bauchi State, Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu has emerged the choice of President Goodluck Jonathan to head the National Pension Commission(PenCom) as its Chairman while M’fon Akpan has been selected as Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS). The President forwarded two letters to the Senate which were read on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday for the confirmation of theduo in accordance with the law. Former governor Muazu who the president has now nominated to chair the Pensions Commission was accused by the EFCC of embezzling millions of naira belonging to Bauchi state when he served as governor of the state between 1999-2007. During the heat of the EFCC’s investigations against him, Muazu left the country for some time. When he returned, there were reports that the EFCC had cleared him of wrongdoing. However the commission released a statement saying that “we wish to state emphatically that ex-governor Adamu Muazu is still being investigated and therefore could not have been cleared of graft allegations against him.” Shortly afterwards the case, like many others, simply died. Now the president wants Muazu to be chairman of the Pension Commission which has had its own share of controversy in recent times as a result of the defrauding of pensioners in the country. The names of Chinelo O. Anohu-Amazu (South East), Omotowa Reuben Gilbert (North Central), Mohammed Ka’oje Abubakar(North West) and Adesojo O. Olaoba-Efuntayo(South West) were also forwarded to the Senate for confirmation as Commissioners of the Pension Commission. In a letter titled, “Appointment of the Chairman and full-time Commissioners for the National Pension Commission”, the President stated that following the expiration of the tenure of the Chairman, DG and the Commissioners of the Commission, he decided to nominate those listed for confirmation in line with the provisions of Sections 16(3) and 17(1) of the Pension Reform Act, 2004, which provides that the President shall appoint the Chairman, Director-General and other members of the commission other than the ex-officio subject to ratification by the Senate. On the part of the Internal Revenue Service, Jonathan stated that he was complying with Section 11a of the Federal Inland Revenue(Establishment) Act, 2007, which provides that “the executive Chairman shall be appointed by the President subject to confirmation by the Senate”, by forwarding M’fon Akpan’s name to the upper legislative chamber for the post. www.thescoopng.com/pres-jonathan-nominates-ex-bauchi-governor-who-was-declared-wanted-by-the-efcc-to-chair-pensions-commission/ |

Details of how a truck carrying sand belonging to the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Movement Lost control on the ever-busy Oshodi-Apapa expressway and crushed a commuter bus and four other vehicles on the expressway have emerged. A traffic warden at the Akinpelu Police Station, Oshodi who witnessed the gory accident told P.M.NEWS this morning that the truck was coming from the Anthony flyover and heading towards the church’s headquarters in Ijeshatedo when the driver lost control and hit a commuter bus loading passengers near the Charity Bus Stop. •The commuter bus involved in the tragic accident at Oshodi. Courtesy of The PUNCH The traffic warden said other vehicles which were on high speed rammed into the truck, leading to the death of many. He confirmed that six persons died in the accident while many were injured. Some hawkers were said to be among the dead. The injured, he disclosed, were rushed to nearby hospitals while the dead were taken to the mortuary. “The accident was unfortunate. When we arrested the driver, he blamed it on brake failure but we also observed that he was carrying an overload. So it is possible that the weight of the load caused him to lose control. We are still investigating,” he stated. He denied that 13 passengers died in the accident, saying only six persons have been confirmed dead as at 9 a.m. today. The traffic warden who said he participated in carrying the corpses to the ambulance said majority of the victims were women and children. He told P.M.NEWS that the driver of the truck, Lawrence Nwaodu, is in custody. Oshodi Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Samuel Ogundayo, said 19 people were involved in the accident, adding that eight of them died. It was learnt that among the dead was an unidentified pregnant woman, whose foetus was also crushed in the accident. In his own account, a witness, Okwudili Ulasi said the truck after hitting the bus rammed into commuters waiting for bus. “Many people were waiting at the motor park. The truck also rammed into some of the vehicles there. So many people were crushed and blood was all over the place,“ he narrated. Mortuary assistants at the Ikeja General Hospital morgue said none of the dead was brought to the hospital. They confirmed that the corpses were taken to the IDH in Yaba. Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the driver, Lawrence Nwaodu, had been arrested and the vehicle had been impounded. Braide said some of the injured were rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. Braide warned motorists, especially truck drivers, to always check their vehicles before driving on the expressway as cases of truck accidents had risen in recent times. In a statement she signed, Braide stated: “At exactly 12 p.m., a fatal motor accident occurred at Oshodi. When police officers from Makinde Division led by the Divisional Police Officer arrived at the scene, they discovered that it was caused by a tipper, which was carrying sand, along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, inward Mile 2 service lane. “The tipper, with number plate, JJJ 824 XD, owned by the Lord’s Chosen Church, lost control due to a brake failure and rammed into three stationary vehicles in the park. In the process, all the vehicles got damaged while five yet-to- be identified female pedestrians lost their lives. “One of the deceased was a pregnant woman, whose foetus also gushed out, bringing the casualty figure to six in number. About five people were also injured and they are currently receiving treatment at LASUTH. “We have apprehended the driver of the truck, whose name is Lawrence Nwaodu, 45. The four vehicles involved have been taken to LASTMA office, while calm has also returned tothe area.” http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/11/20/how-lord-chosens-truck-killed-6-at-oshodi/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PmNewsNigeriaFeed+%28PM+News+Nigeria%29 |

By MOSES AKAIGWEPrice tags on cars and buses are likely to go up by about 250 per cent next year, following the introduction of new fiscal measure by the Federal Government, as part of the new development plan for the country’s ailing auto industry. A memo by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy/Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, on Thursday last week, to the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs, directed that imported fully built unit (FBU) cars shall now attract 35 per cent duty and 35 per cent levy, totaling 70 per cent charges. According to the document, the duty on buses has also been raised from 10 per cent to 35 per cent without levy. Hitherto, imported cars attracted about 20 per cent duty. The minister’s directive dated November 14, and also sent to Federal Inland Revenue Service, pre-shipment agents (Cotechna Inspection Limited and SGS Nigeria Limited) and another agency, Global Scan Limited, said approval for the introduction of the new fiscal measures was given “by Mr. President.” On the other hand, as part of the policy, local auto manufacturers, like Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Ltd, Nnewi; VON Automobile (formerly Volkswagen), Ojo; National Trucks Manufacturers, Kano; PAN Nigeria, Kaduna and other auto makers in the country, will no more pay duties or levies on their Completely Knocked Down (CKD) sets imported from their overseas partners. However, Semi-Knocked Down components for the production of vehicles locally, shall attract only five per cent duty without levy. The circular, which was obtained exclusively by Daily Sun, explained that the new measures, coming about six weeks after the Federal Executive Council approved a far-reaching automotive industry development plan, were designed to boost activities in the industry and also attract foreign investments. “The above measures are to create an environment to support existing assembly plants and attract other Original Equipment Manufacturers who have expressed interest in Nigeria”, the minister remarked. However, while the automotive policy and fiscal measures are being lauded by the National Automotive Council, NAMA (the umbrella body of local auto makers, and the auto manufacturers themselves, importers of fully built vehicles, have been crying foul. Reacting to the new tariff regime, NAMA Executive Director, Mr. Arthur Madueke, described it and the development policy, which as the best thing to happen to the industry in many years. Madueke, who has been in the forefront of the manufacturers’ campaign for more stringent duties on imported vehicles as is done in other countries, said: “It has been long over due. Nigeria cannot continue to be a dumping ground for other countries’ auto manufacturers. Nigeria has all it takes to be a leading producer of vehicles. I, therefore, commend President Jonathan for the courage to approve the bold steps, and ignore protests by unpatriotic people who do not want the best for our industry.” He listed some of the immediate and direct benefits as employment for no fewer than 100, 000 Nigerians, and stimulation of investments in the linkage industries, adding that with full implementation and consistency, the industry is capable of achieving 400, 000 jobs in the next few years. In their comments, both the Chairman of Innoson Group, Chief Innocent Chukwuma and the Managing Director of Proforce Limited a vehicle armouring plant based in Ode-Remo, Ogun State), Mr. Ade Ogundeyin, hailed “this latest auto industry-friendly pronouncement by government”. Speaking to the Daily Sun yesterday, the President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Chief Eugene Nweke, predicted that the measures would reduce the volume of jobs handled by his members as less cars are likely to be imported from 2014. According to Nweke, high levy and duty on new cars, would further push patronage towards imported second-hand (tokunbo) cars. In his reaction, a very influential car importer said the new fiscal measures and the auto development plan are outrageous, citing a provision in the minister’s circular which allows an auto plant to import cars and buses and pay the applicable duties without levy, as a guise to give undue advantage to a particular manufacturer that imports vehicles and also owns a plant. “It is either you are an importer or you are a manufacturer”, the importer said. “The Trade and Industry Minister said there is no going back on the new measures, even as flawed as they are. He has vowed that he would defend them with every drop of blood in him. On our part, we the vehicle importers will fight the policies with the last drop of blood in us”. Some car importers, including Elizade Nigeria Limited, Globe Motors, Coscharis Nigeria Limited, CFAO Motors, SCOA and Toyota Nigeria Limited, under the aegis of Auto Manufacturers’ Representatives Group in Nigeria, had in a recent petition to President Goodluck Jonathan, called for the reversal of the new policy. Meanwhile, there were indications yesterday that auto showrooms might start any moment from now to effect a gradual upward review in their vehicles’ prices in response to the minister’s memo, which they got wind of over the weekend. At a Kia showroom in Lagos, a source disclosed that meetings were being held and prices of other brands’ vehicles being monitored, “to know when and by what margin to increase our own prices.” The source also feared that that the price of the base model of a Rio was likely to rise by more than N3 million, from the present N2 million by next year. At a Toyota showroom, also in Lagos, a source hinted of “a sharp price increase” on the cars. “For example, paying 20 per cent duty, our Camry is about N9 million now. But I can assure you that when we reflect the new 70 per cent duty and levy, which represent about 250 per cent increase, Camry will be about N20 million. http:/sunnewsonline.com/new/national/car-prices-rise-250/ |

Nigeria Railway Corporation has told those who hang on trains not to blame their criminal actions on shortage of coaches. It said those arrested would be charged with attempted suicide. The corporation decried the unrepentant attitude of railway passengers to warnings on the risk it posed to their lives. An online news portal, Sahara Reporters, had reported on Wednesday that a passenger, who hanged on a train, had fallen off and died at the Ikeja station while trying to evade arrest by police. Some of the passengers had blamed the development on inadequate coaches. While denying knowledge of the incident, the Assistant Director, Public Relations, NRC, David Ndakotsu, told our correspondent on Friday that most of the passengers, particularly in Lagos were unruly. While he admitted that there was a shortage of coaches to convey passengers, whose number was increasing, he however faulted the passenger for being impatient. He said this was why railway police often raid, arrest and prosecute rail traffic offenders. “We charge them with attempted suicide. Anybody hanging on the train or sitting on the roof is assumed as planning to kill themselves. The charge for that is attempted suicide,” the NRC spokesperson stated. Ndakotsu also noted that the corporation would not be responsible for any injuries or death of those who hang on trains. “If we experience a shortage of coaches, is that the reason why passengers should misbehave? We keep telling them and that is why we placed the trains on hourly schedule. Ifa train is congested, you wait for the next one. “We want everybody to be comfortable. If you hang and anything happens on the train; in case there is any eventuality, you are not covered by insurance. If you buy your ticket and you’re sitting in the train, if there is any eventuality, the corporation will take responsibility through an insurance policy.” Ndakotsu explained that trains begin movement at 5am and they get to stations every hour. He advised passengers to wait for the next train whenever the current one is full. He added that the government was addressing the challenge. He said while more coaches had been ordered the corporation was rehabilitating the damaged ones. Copyright PUNCH. www.punchng.com/news/hang-on-train-face-attempted-suicide-charge-nrc/ |
False news! How did this made the front page? Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the University of Ibadan, has confirmed that stories which made the rounds on Saturday, that the National Executive Council, NEC, would hold an emergency meeting in Kano, were false. Ajiboye was speaking in an interview on Diamond FM, University of Ibadan and stated that no meeting was scheduled for today, as they were still in the middle of a seven-day morning, which was declared in honour of the late Professor Festus Iyayi, a former national chairman of the Union. dailypost.com.ng/2013/11/16/ASUU-strike-union-confirms-nec-meeting-did-not-hold-today/ |
Shey ASUU don call off strike? Go hug transformer. Vexing mode |
Earlier in the week, Nigerians were optimistic that after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) meeting scheduled for Wednesday, the four-month-old strike embarked upon by the union would be called off, but the unfortunate demise of Professor Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU just barely 24 hours to the meeting again dashed the hopes of parents, students and other stakeholders. Michael Oche writes on the latest incident and its effect on students Every effort to make ASUU call off its four-month-old strike had failed to yield positive results. Not even an intervention by the Vice President, Arc. Namadi Sambo could make the union change its mind. Even a N200 billion promised by the federal government was rejected by the union. They insisted that the government honour the 2009 agreement it entered with the union. The 2009 agreement entailed that the federal government provide N1.3 trillion in a space of four years to improve infrastructures in the 61 federal universities across the country. By 2012, the government was expected to have released N100 billion and N400 billion in 2013. Informed sources said this was actually why the union refused to accept the N200 billion earlier promised the union by the government. However, after several breakdown in negotiations, President Goodluck Jonathan stepped in and offered the union a new agreement which stipulates that the government will inject N1.1 trillion in a space of five years into the university system. Though, inside sources said many ASUU officials were not really pleased with the new agreement because they felt government also failed to keep the 2009 agreement and were skeptical of government sincerity, Professor Festus Iyayi, a former president of ASUU urged his fellow comrades to at least give the government the benefit of the doubt and call off the strike. After the meeting, and heeding to the advice of the former president, the current ASUU president, Dr Nasir Fagge promised to take the offer to his colleagues. By Monday, all the various congresses of ASUU met in their various locations and deliberated on the protracted strike and the general consensus was that the NEC would meet on Wednesday where a final decision would be taken. Hence, there was a glimmer of hope that the strike would be called off after the NEC meeting. But none of the students or parents saw it coming. Most parents were beginning to give a sigh of relief and even president Jonathan would have been relieved that finally, he was able to put an end to a strike that has lasted four months and was almost turning into an embarrassment to his administration. Like every Nigerian who meant well for the university system, Iyayi was on his way to Kano to attend the NEC meeting when the bus he was travelling in was involved in an accident with the convoy of the Kogi state governor. Immediately the news of his death went to town, ASUU suspended the planned NEC meeting, thereby dashing any hope of calling off the strike. For now, none of the ASUU officials has spoken on when the NEC meeting would be convened. Acknowledging the role of the late Iyayi, NLC president, Abdulwaheed Omar said, “He died in service because he was on his way to Kano for the ASUU NEC meeting and one could recall the role he played in our meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan last week as regarding the suspension of the strike.” He said further, “Iyayi died on his way to Kano to attend a meeting as part of the process of finding an enduring solution to the ASUU strike. Others who were traveling with him are lying critically ill at the hospital. “Professor Iyayi’s death is not only a blow to ASUU and the Congress; it is a blow to the entire country to which he committed his entire life. “Iyayi was an activist to the core, often deploying his prodigious energy and intellectual prowess to the cause. As President of the Academic Staff Union in 1986, he set the tone and pace of ASUU protests, in spite of the overbearing military government. It certainly must be in appreciation of this that the executive of ASUU, had always thought if fit to involve him in negotiations.” Some reports have quoted family sources as saying the burial of the former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has been tentatively fixed for first week of December. Some parents and students, who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday, said that the suspension of the meeting might lead to further elongation of the strike by university lecturers. They described the latest development as disheartening and devastating. “It’s my hope that his death will spur ASUU leadership to honour him by finding a lasting solution to the strike even as I urge all those who are alive to do all they could with steadfastness and courage,” a parent, Chidi Amaka said. Mike Odia, another parent, said that the new development had dashed the hope of parents, students and many Nigerians for a resolution of the action. “As a parent, I feel very worried about this new development. Over four months down the line, we thought we were getting to the end of the strike until this unfortunate accident that claimed the professor’s life. “We were happy when the president waded in and made a promise to the ASUU national leaders and they said they were going to study the offer. We thought this would have brought the strike to an end. “But with this development, they have suspended their NEC meeting and one is not sure if the end is in sight. “We only hope and pray that goodwill will prevail on the ASUU leadership to have a re-think while we commiserate with the families of the late professor,” Odia said. A student, Stella Adeyemi, said that she had expected that by next week she would be returning to the campus. “I am very sad about this happening. I am a final year student and we do not know what the fate of those of us that are in public universities are at the moment. “We pray that as ASUU members reflect on the loss of Iyayi, they should also reflect on the over four-month-old strike”. Another student, Ify Samuel, said that it was sad that ASUU lost one of its strong members, adding that the union was right in suspending the meeting. She, however, called on the union to take immediate steps to call off the strike after the mourning period. leadership.ng/news/171113/how-iyayi-s-death-dashed-students-hope-quick-end-ASUU-strike |
Stop passing false information to we students.I wonder why some people can’t just read between the lines. Instead spread Channels news that is not new or researched….120 voted to suspend, when it was 120 universities did voted, Uniuyo, Uniben and few voted no while majority voted yes. How come they are still 120 that voted yes? I think we need to get proper information to disseminate to avoid giving some people unnecessary hypertension. No matter the outcome of NEC meeting, ASUU can’t suspend the strike until the government sign the new agreement in line with condition put forward by them(except if all will be done this weekend, which is not possible), which state that NASS, minister of finance, CBN governor, NLC, Labour minister and some others must be a signatory to the agreement to avoid David Mark and others question on the intelligent of those who signed 2009 Agreement. And ASUU had said this over and over before. Never will ASUU or even any reasonable person do an act which involve another party without the other party concurring to such action formally. ASUU has a procedure in embarking and suspending of a strike and until we understand this, many will continue to be victims of fake news, propaganda or na-me- post-am-first syndrome affecting many people on facebook. The NEC meeting is to look at the report of each chapters and condition attached to those that said Yes and likewise look into the chapters that said No, then resolved the issue and come out with a final decision ( which is likely to favour suspension) then inform the government and wait for those signatories to sign, then announcement of suspension will be done by ASUU. Hopefully, this strike will come to an end this month as reality totally kill any hope of this weekend. |

Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will at its meeting on Wednesday night suspend the lingering ASUU strike to allow public university students to return to their classes as reports from the various local congresses of the union today has shown. Others are, the University of Calabar, Federal University of Technology Akure, and Ekiti State University. As of Press time, only the University of Benin has refused to yield to the call that the 4-month old ASUU strike be suspended. Yes! Pack your bags! Just coming in! Short URL: http://www.osundefender.org/? p=131541 A source close to top guns in the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) has told The City Reporters the lecturers will ditch their four month old strike this weekend so students could resume on November 18 (next Monday). The source said there was no way the union could reject the new offer of N220bn a year tabled by President Goodluck Jonathan during a marathon meeting with ASUU last week Tuesday. ASUU had come out of that meeting to tell Nigerians it needed time to deliberate on the new deal and reach a consensus among it members before talking to the press. A top official of the union, has however said the government could not be trusted even on the new offer, and that ASUU’s members were divided over the government’s offer. He, however raised a beam of hope by saying the majority still decided to give the government the benefit of the doubt. As ASUU executives meet this Wednesday, if the fate of the strike is down to a vote among the striking lecturers, as suggested by ASUU chairman, Nasir Fagge, the four month old impasse may surely end this week. ASUU went on strike July 1 over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the government with a key component of the memorandum of understanding the allocation of 26% of Nigeria’s total budget to education. Although the government is planning to allocate just 9% of the 2014 budget to education, ASUU now seems set to end the strike after government offers that would surely boost lecturers’ take home pay and improve varsity infrastructure. http://naijatunez.com/ASUU-strike-schools-resume-november-18/?utm_source=naijatunez.com+&utm_medium=naijatunez+ |

Frosting That store- bought frosting from a tub might taste great on cakes and cookies, but it’s packed with problems. “It’s one of the only items in the grocery store that still has trans fats, which are terrible for your health and waistline,” says Melina Jampolis, MD, physician nutrition expert and coauthor of The Calendar Diet. “Trans fat raises bad cholesterol, lowers good cholesterol, and causes inflammation, which can lead to belly fat and diseases ranging from heart disease to diabetes.” On top of that, tub frosting is loaded with sugar, and high-sugar diets contribute to premature wrinkles. Yikes. 2. Processed Baked Goods So convenient, so tasty (if we’re being honest here), but so not worth it. Those pre- packaged mini muffins, doughnuts, and dessert cakes will add tons of calories and loads of unwanted sugar to your diet, plus they aren’t easy to digest. “These foods are bad on so many levels, because they are filled with high sugar content and preservatives for a longer shelf-life — they can literally sit there forever,” says Dr. Tanzi. “Sugar increases inflammation in the skin, which on top of irritating acne and rosacea, can make you look puffy and bloated. Skip the wrapped stuff and grab fresh fruit for a sweet fix instead. 3. Soda Dietitians and doctors all agree: Soda should be nixed from your diet completely. “One can of soda is like a can of water with 10 packets of sugar in it,” says nutritionist Bonnie Taub-Dix, MA, RD, CDN, and director and owner of BTD Nutrition Consultants, LLC. “The recommended amount of daily sugar for a woman is about six teaspoons or 24 grams, and soda has way more than that.” Good old fashion H2O is still your best option. If you want to jazz it up, add a slice of fresh fruit for flavor. 4. Sugary Cereal A bowl of Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, or Cap’n Crunch might taste like nostalgia, but it’ll wreak some havoc with its high amount of inflammation-causing sugar and gluten content. “For some people with sensitive skin, gluten can exacerbate breakouts, leading to increased redness and, yes, more breakouts,” says Dr. Tanzi. Opt for low- sugar, gluten-free options like Rice Chex and Corn Flakes. 5. Stick Margarine Choose a small amount of regular butter or soft spread over stick-shaped margarine when topping foods or baking, says Taub-Dix. “Margarine is usually loaded with trans fat,” she says. Don’t forget that stick margarine is found in plenty of pastries, crackers, snack foods, and even microwave popcorn, so limit intake to keep cholesterol levels in check. www.informationng.com/2013/11/5-foods-to-never-eat.html |
