There have been indications that after Monday’s meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the four month strike of the lecturers may finally end. As of 12.30 am (Tuesday), the meeting was still ongoing. The FG is reported to be desperate to work out an agreement with ASUU. A closed-door meeting has started on Monday at 2:40 pm inside the First Lady Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja. The parties are still negotiating, as of 12:30 am (Tuesday). Indications that the strike which is now into its 5th month may be resolved have emerged when the President stated, while shaking hands with ASUU Chairman Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge: “My president, I hope it will end today. Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution.” All those in attendance responded with a loud “amen.” When greeting the NLC President, Abdulwahab Omar, Jonathan said: “My president with you around today, there will be no problem, our agreement is signed, sealed and delivered.” This is the first meeting between the lecturers and Jonathan since the beginning of the strike. The Presidency took over negotiations with the striking lecturers September 19, with the Vice-President Namadi Sambo spearheading the FG side. The lecturers were seen meeting among themselves in their bus during the break that has started at 6.30 pm. When State House correspondents tried to talk to the lecturers, some of them replied that they would return to continue their discussions with the President. No details of there discussion have been yet made known. Apart from Fagge and Jonathan, the meeting has in attendance the President, Vice President, Namadi Sambo; Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike; and Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu among others. The ASUU is presented by Prof. Abdulahi Sule-Kano, Prof. Dipo Fashina and Prof. Festus Iyayi, Prof. Suleiman Abdul, and Prof. Abdullahi Sule-Kano. President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulawahid Omar and that of the Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Kaigama, are also there. Preparatory to the meeting, Senate President, David Mark met with the leadership of ASUU at the National Assembly. He regretted that the strike had lingered for the past five months, and called for a win-win resolution to the industrial action. He then led the Union’s representatives to the Presidential Villa after the meeting. The 2009 agreement ASUU has embarked upon an indefinite strike July 1, 2013. The lecturers protest against an alleged FG’s failure to honor an agreement signed between the FG and ASUU in 2009. Part of the agreement dwelt on funding of universities where both parties agreed that each federal university should get at least N1.5 trillion between 2009 and 2011 while state universities, within the same period, should receive N3.6 million per student. The agreement was signed by Bolanle Babalakin, the then chairman of Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities; Gamaliel Onosode, chairman of the re- negotiation committee; and Ukachukwu Awuzei, the then president of ASUU. It is still unclear, however, how much of the agreement have been met by the FG. The secretary to the federation, Pius Anyim, has recently stated that most of the issues contained in the 2009 document had been fully met except for the earned allowances estimated at N92 billion. We will keep you updated… www.informationng.com/2013/11/breaking-ASUU-strike-will-end-today-jonathan-updated.html |

This report is the culmination of weeks of investigation into the scam that is disguised as tests for unsuspecting job seekers in the banking sub-sector of the Nigerian economy. The findings are shocking as much as they are bound to affect your sensibilities of decency and morality. Because of the sensitive nature of this matter, more so the broad scope of our on-going investigations, particularly the need not to jeopardize this work, we have deliberately decided not to reveal the identities of the job-seekers and the bank in question – mind you, some other banks are involved in this scam. However, as we gather more facts and by the time the investigation runs its full course, we may then be able to disclose the identities of all the parties concerned. Sometime in 1986, the then minister for labour and productivity, then Rear Admiral Patrick Sebo Koshoni, during his ministerial press briefing announced that about one million Nigerians were unemployed. Even at that time, the figure he gave was regarded as an under estimation of the problem of unemployment which became visible in many Nigerian homes about three years earlier. Indeed, during the last days of the civilian presidency of President Aliyu Usman Shehu Shagari the problem grew fangs, but it was the government of military president Ibrahim Babagida that officially took steps to address the issue of unemployment especially among the youths. The Babagida administration through his ministers of labour sought and got the assistance of the International Labour Organisation to create jobs in the informal sector. The consequence of which was the setting up of the National Directorate of Employment to create jobs in the informal sector. Apart from this, another minister of labour in the Babagida administration, then Brigadier- General Ike Nwachukwu, during a ministerial briefing called on banks to use part of the huge profits to engage a number of young graduates. All of these efforts didn’t do much to tackle the unemployment problem as it got compounded with the high number of graduates turned out by the universities. The influx of foreign investors into Nigeria did not stem the tide of unemployment either. Rather, it was the era in which Nigerians were subjected to the worst working conditions in the name of attracting foreign investors. Many of these so-called investors have subjected Nigerians to dehumanizing working conditions. The Ikorodu factory fire of 2002 in which workers were roasted comes to mind. That wasn’t an isolated case. A particular company owned by the Chinese located in Ogba Lagos, had its machine chop off hands and fingers of employees and the organization has not been sanctioned in any form. It was also an era in which the so-called “ New Generation Banks” came into business. Banks pretending to be doing business in a manner unknown to the older banks. These ‘ new generation banks’ barred their employees from trade union activities. They also do not belong to the Nigeria Bankers Employers Group or even the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association ( NECA). It was and still is a culture of impunity. Even with the pretensions to new ways of banking, they are not known to have created jobs that have been of any significant impact on the economy. However, a current development in a bank prompted an investigation which culminated in this report. Ms. Josephine ( actual name withheld) a graduate of the University of Lagos some two years ago, while desperately searching for a job, she got on line to a company “ U Connect” . The company on its web site listed its services as “ Recruitment, Outsourcing, Placement, Training , Quality and Management”. This graduate was then invited along with others to come and write tests for a job. President Jonathan and Emeka Nwogu, Minister of Labour and Productivity. while at the the background job seekers scramble for few job opportunities. “We were not told what type of job it is” she said. “After we had about three tests, some of us were shortlisted and then invited for another round of tests when the recruiting officer told us we were being engaged on behalf of a bank”. After the first round of tests, Josephine and others were told that U Connect has concluded its own side of the recruitment and that the Bank (name withheld) though quite accessible would take over. The bank did. After another round of tests, the applicants were congratulated for scaling through. If they thought their problems of joblessness were over, and a new life was ahead, they were dead wrong. The applicants, young graduates (men and women), were told to go and find for the bank 10 customers who must open new accounts with the bank and deposit at least N100,000 ( One hundred thousand Naira). In other words, they were to source for the bank One Million Naira. Simple, No money, no job. Ngozi, (real name withheld) was able to find new customers who deposited about N850,000 . With that, she thought she would be commended. Rather, she was booted out. She was disqualified from the training programme, the next phase of her tests because she failed to find customers who could deposit One million Naira. Another applicant who was able to raise a million Naira from four depositors was knocked off the next state. Why? She was told that she had not met the requirement of securing for the bank 10 depositors. Another applicant, Akintoye (real identity protected) was able to source for 10 Customers who met the deposit target of One million but his aches had just started. The young graduate, was told that to be allowed to participate in the training programme to be conducted somewhere in Ikeja, he must source for the bank, a Guarantor who must deposit with the bank N2,000,000 (Two million Naira). Why? ”We were told that the training programme is quite expensive and that it would be conducted by Havard Business School. We were also told that we would have to sign a bond that we would not quit the services of the bank for any reason within two years. If we do, then the Guarantor forfeits his deposit”. Sunday Vanguard obtained a copy of the letter issued to the would be employees. It states “ Thank you for honoring our interview invitation; please be informed that you are required to do the following: ”Option 1: Open 10 accounts with a total cumulative balance of N1million (Minimum of N100,000 in each of the accounts) OR ”Option 2. : Open a fixed deposit of N5million for 180 days. For whichever option you choose, please go to any Bank branch closest to you to obtain account opening forms for this exercise. This exercise A minimum of 10 account opening forms for Option 1 a minimum of 1 account opening form for Option 2 ”All accounts must be tagged for reference and easy tracking. Also, find below the format for which the details of the account opening exercise should be sent to the underlisted email addresses………….. (A list of the bank’s staff email addresses are provided for the applicants but because of the scope of this investigation we are not at this moment going to reveal some details about the bank as this may jeopardize on-going investigations into this scam).Deadline for the exercise is : 18th October 2013 by 12 noon The format to send the details of account shows: S/N, Name, Account Number and Amount ( N). However, the letter was not signed. All efforts to speak with Corporate Affairs Manager of the bank were unsuccessful as the line was not available. Having gone through Nigeria’s labour laws, one cannot find a single sentence that supports these conditions given to applicants by the bank. Further investigations showed that U-Connect, the company where this started sent this SMS to the affected applicants “You are invited for an interview ( GRADUATE TRAINEE LEVEL 1) on Thursday 27/06/13 by 12 noon at U- Connnect, 5, Ogbunike str, behind Avalon House, off admiralty way, Lekki 1, Lagos. Come with photocopies of all credentials , CV and passport. Sunday Vanguard called U-connect to ask if it is registered with the ministry of labour and productivity. A female voice responsed, “ yes we are” but she seemed not sure and said, “I will connect you to the Human Resource Dept. I’m only a front desk officer”. At the back ground, a male voice instructed her to tell the caller to “call back”. She got back on the phone and asked that we call back in 30 minutes. The call was made to U-connect on October 10, 2013. Since then, it had not been possible to reach the company on the phone again. Because of the nature and sensitivity of this development, the outcome of further investigations suggested that U-CONNECT may not be a registered member of the Human Capital Providers Association of Nigeria (HuCaPan) which is affiliated to the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association. HuCaPan has a Code of Coduct which was launched early this year by the permanent secretary, federal ministry of employment, labour and productivity, Dr. Clement Illoh. Objectives of the Code of Conduct – “ This Code of Conduct sets out the principles that shall guide the Private Employment Industry. The standards in this Code of Conduct shall be observed by all those involved in Private Employment industry in Nigeria. This principle based approach is intended to maintain and enhance consistency, fairness, transparency, accountability and diversity in recruitment practices. This Code provides Private Employment Agencies with a clear and concise guide to the approach it must take to ensure a fair, open and transparent process that produces a quality outcome and commands public confidence. It is intended to contribute to the development of best practice in the field of recruitment and general human capital development. ”This Code of Conduct shall provide a framework based on the global best practice employment principles. It recognizes that Private Employment Agencies require flexibility to deal efficiently and effectively with the diverse range of services they provide. Accordingly, the Code shall enable Private Employment Agencies to adopt strategies and develop processes to implement the principles effectively. All agreements signed under this Code must also comply with relevant employment and equality legislation in Nigeria”. Code of Conduct- Principle 3 Respect for Transparency of Terms of Engagement states “PEAs shall ensure that workers are given details of their working conditions, the nature of the work to be undertaken, rates to pay and pay arrangements and working hours. This principle obligates Private Employment Agencies to inform employees of the conditions applicable to the contract or employment relationship”. Principle 4 Respect for free-of-charge provision of services to jobseekers “PEAs shall not charge directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, any fees or costs to prospective employees and workers, for the services directly related to temporary assignment or permanent placement”. All that is required is registration with the federal ministry of labour and productivity. Trade Unions kick, call for CBN sanction The acting general secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Chris Uyot said, “ Labour is concerned but government should be interested too. This is a serious matter. The situation in the country should not be an excuse for multinationals and banks to exploit our youths. We’ll hold the Central Bank of Nigeria responsible.” Comrade Uyot vowed that NLC will support whatever action the unions in the banking sector take. He emphasized, “This act is a form of corruption. They are making prostitutes of youths. It is simply Corporate Prostitution. It is not enough for the government to claim to be tackling corruption without addressing issues like this. We condemn it in totality. The banks should not be allowed to turn Nigerians to slaves”. The President of the Association of Banks, Insurance and Allied Institutions, Comrade Olusoji Salako also condemned the conditions given by this accessible bank in totality. He told Sunday Vanguard, “We are against such things. It is alien to our sector. By the time you make money a condition for employment, why are we talking about money laundering. So, even armed robbers, and 419 people can make deposit with such a bank”. Salako condemned in strong terms the conditions attached to the training of new employees. “ Placing value on training is improper. The duty of the organization is to train people. We are against this. If it is true, it is uncalled for . It is against the standard in the industry. The Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN) should call the bank to order”. So, why do these banks get away with non- compliance with labour laws, what can ministry of labour do? Comrade Salako said, “the federal government should develop the political will to enforce our law”. He said, unfortunately, those who run these businesses where unions are not allowed , where labour laws are violated with impunity make up the government’s National Economic Management Team. “They are the big donors to the government’s party and programmes”. He recalled that during the administration of President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, representatives of labour were included in the Economic Management Team but the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan excluded labour’s representatives. Contact with Government Sunday Vanguard contacted the minister of labour and productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu via an sms and he replied that the ministry had noted it. It is expected that action would be taken. NLC condemns employers’ tactics in banks . Rising from its national executive council meeting in Kaduna, The Nigeria Labour Congress, in a communiqué signed by its President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar and Ag. General secretary, Chris Uyot in its observation on casualisation condemned the cash for jobs policy in the banks. It stated: NEC-In-Session observes that there is a resurgence of casualisation of workers in the public and private sectors across the country. This unholy practice induces slave labour, prostitution, psychological trauma and the violation of the rights of these workers and does not in any way stimulate productivity . What employers of Labour are trying to do is take undue advantage of hapless applicants or workers. Exploiting the weak defences of this category of people is not only morally reprehensible but defies logic. Even if the private sector, out of corporate greed, indulges in this unwholesome practice what justification does government have in doing so? Some banks have gone to the extent of compelling their employees to meet a target of 6million a month and securing of bonds that make a mockery of plantation slave labour. Congress does not see how this terrible practice stimulates productivity. NEC resolves that the Nigeria Labour Congress shall henceforth lead its affiliate unions against any employer identified to be engaged in these unwholesome practices by employing all known trade union actions until such employer retraces its steps”. For hundreds of thousands of youths hoping to make a career in banking, their dreams may never be realised. It is clear now that possession of the requisite qualification isn’t enough, he or she has to be connected to those who are able to save millions of Naira otherwise, no job. It’s simply an era of Cash for Jobs. |
While Trying To Get A Job : True Life Story This is a true life story. Female job seekers beware of what men tell you in the name of offering you jobs. Read her mail below: I am a rape victim and I want to tell my story to the world cos I want justice on the man that defiled me. I met him at airforce junction after I wrote a dragnet test at stadium road PH. He went on about how he was an aide to the governor of rivers state and that his name is (removed by me), a yoruba man and that he could help me with a job since I was from rivers state. we discussed about the recent happenings in the state. we exchanged pins and parted ways. I went back to lagos for business. A month later, he calls me up that his oga wants to see me, smhow, his oga found out about me and would want to see me. ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, assured Nigerian students that the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be over in a few months. The Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike stated this at the anniversary lecture of National Universities Commission, NUC, in Abuja. The minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Macjohn Nwaobiala, reiterated Federal Government commitment in resolving the ongoing strike of ASUU. According to Wike, “The Federal Government is very concerned about the state of public tertiary institutions in the country. The Federal Government is really worried about the ongoing strike of ASUU and the strike would be resolved in a few months.” Professor John Daniel in his paper presentation titled, ‘Turbulent and Testing Times for Global Higher Education: Lessons for Nigeria’, said “online teaching and learning is now part of the future of most universities. Nigeria should be very good at this because without embarrassing you by pressing the point, I note that your country, through 419 scams, is a world leader in the use of the internet for less desirable purposes.” He said higher education all over the world is facing lot of challenges that included youth unemployment and the current changes in the university system. “These are indeed turbulent times, not only for United States of America but also for much of higher education globally”, he said. A former Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Jubril Munzali, in his goodwill message, said the education sector for 21 years have been under funded and the significant increase in the funding of tertiary institutions were done through the struggle of ASUU. He blamed the Federal Government lingering crisis rocking the nation’s university system. He said it is time Federal Government listened to its agencies and allow NUC perform its statutory role and fund universities based on the advice of its agencies like NUC. “Successive administrations in the country never paid adequate attention to university education”. He said the Federal Government process of direct funding of universities, have over the years resulted in mismanagement of the funds allocated to the institutions. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/ASUU-strike-ll-months-wike/ |

A mother has been jailed for up to 30 years after she burnt her 19- year-old son’s man-hood and bosoms with a lighter. Christine Gelineau from Massachusetts pleaded guilty to first- degree assault and witness tampering, after she also coerced her son to lie about the abuse. At a hearing in New Hampshire the youngster described in detail the brutal abuse she subjected him to. “Dear ex-Mother,” he began as he read from a prepared statement. “What you did to me is unforgivable.” “You beat me, starved me, almost chopped my man-hood off, threw my clothes away, wouldn’t let me bathe.” “You almost killed me by having me take three (antidepressants) and two muscle- relaxers.” He continued: “Now that I know you’re a complete criminal and only wanted me dead so you could go back to your old life. “You won’t be able to attend my graduation or see me go on to college, so I wish you goodbye. I hope you realize you have lost everything you had.” In the affidavit for the case Gelineau admitted to burning the tip of her son’s man- hood, but claims she only did so after he threatened to have s*x with her. She then put on gloves and grabbed and twisted his man-hood before holding a lighter to it for several seconds. The injuries suffered, which were later confirmed to be second and third degree burns, have left him with permanent nerve damage.

SHANGHAI (AFP) – A young Chinese couple are facing criminal punishment for “selling” their infant daughter and using the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone, state media said Friday. Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against them for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported. Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high-end sports shoes and other goods, it said. Apple’s products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year. But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children. “Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees,” one said. Some Chinese, especially in rural areas, have a traditional preference for sons though reports did not say if the child’s gender was also a factor in the case. Online commentary condemned the couple, though some used black humour to describe modern Chinese society and the quest for wealth. “So cold-blooded! These people do not deserve the right to be parents!” said Wangzhan1969 in a microblog posting. “This is good business — no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys,” said another posting. An official of the prosecutor’s office handling the case expressed worry over “sensationalism” surrounding the affair but declined to comment further to AFP. Shanghai police could not be reached for comment. Reports did not give the amount the couple received for the child, but their online postings asked for 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 and $8,200). Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s, including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget-conscious iPhone 5c in China. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/quest-wealth-couple-sell-daughter-iphone/ |
Towards ending the ongoing ASUU strike, the Federal Government has committed to spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on the universities as well as on each of the next three-four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard as demanded by ASUU leadership. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available… Government has also increased to N40billion as a first installment, funds for payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. This information is contained in an internal statement at the Federal University of Otuoke by Professor Bolaji Aluko, its Vice- Chancellor. On the earned allowances, Prof. Aluko said “Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million, so Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC.” Professor Aluko said the development followed meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of representatives of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by Prof. Hamisu of ATBU and ASUU reps led by its President, Dr. N. Fagge with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi. Sambo, Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike and others. In the interest of peace, Vice-President Sambo appealed to ASUU to call off the strike and apologized over the “take-it-or- leave-it” comments made by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Other points of agreement at the meetings include the following: Project Prioritization: Universities will now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralized. TETFund Intervention: Government assured that the operations of the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to Universities will continue, unaffected. So the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention. Project Monitoring: A new Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS Assessment intervention for universities has been set up to take over from the Suswan Committee. The new one is under the Federal Ministry of Education and chaired by the Honorable Minister of Education. In addition, to build confidence and ensure faithful implementation and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice President will meet quarterly with the IMC to monitor progress. Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a blue print for revitalizing the Universities to the Vice President. ASUU leadership will now meet to decide if the government should be trusted again, this time. www.ngtrends.com/2013/10/ASUU-strike-update-fg-finally-agrees-meet-asuus-demands-100-days/ |
Despite the challenges faced by working mothers in adhering to exclusive breast feeding for their babies and others, doctors advice that it remains the best. A professional in the business has even disclosed that it helps women to loose weight faster that they could imagine… When Mrs. Bukola Ajao, an accounts officer, started bringing her four-month old baby to her work place, it seemed like a convenient compromise, until he developed cold, cough and catarrh barely two weeks after. “Every night afterwards, he would cry due to the stress of taking him out early every morning,” she recollected. After that episode, she immediately stopped taking him to the office. Although she had not planned to, Mrs. Ajao’s hectic work schedules had forced her into this arrangement because she wanted to be able to continue the recommended six-month period of exclusive breastfeeding for her baby, as her doctor had advised. So whenever she could not breastfeed her baby she used baby, formula. “I breastfeed him in the morning before I leave home and at night when I return from work. I also make sure he is exclusively breast fed during the weekends. Although I would have loved to do it all the time, I can’t because I am a working and nursing mother. When you know the kind of situation you are faced with, you have to find another way out,” she explained. Like Mrs. Ajao, many working and nursing mothers in Nigeria are facing this situation of compromise when it comes to exclusive breastfeeding for their babies because of their busy work schedules and the stress that comes with it. While the use of baby formula seem like a convenient way out, it is not advisable, said Dr. Sunday Olanrewaju, a gynaecologist, who noted that exclusive breast feeding meant breast feeding babies from birth to the first six months of life without adding any supplements or other food. According to the World Health Organisation, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to six months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. “Colostrum, the yellowish, sticky breast milk produced at the end of pregnancy, is the perfect food for the new-born, and feeding should be initiated within the first hour after birth,” it stated. Dr. Olanrewaju agreed and added that not only is breastfeeding essential for a baby’s growth, it is also very good for the baby’s brain development, especially in the second year. “Breast milk is a natural source of food for the baby and it is important for the baby’s growth and development because it contains cells and antibodies that prevent infections.” He further explained that breastfeeding is beneficial because it helps the mother and her baby to bond well. “It also helps the mother to lose excess weight gained during pregnancy. It is also good for the economy of the family as it saves them a lot of money used in buying baby formula,” he said, adding that a family could spend up to N100,000 or more buying baby formula in a year. Some mothers spend between N3,000 and N6,000 or more monthly, depending on the brand of baby formula. This amount increases as the baby grows. This is where the breast pump, a device used to extract milk from the breast of a lactating woman, comes to the rescue. Working and nursing mothers use it to ‘express’ their breast milk into a bottle that can be used for storage and feeding. It should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature between four and ten degrees Celsius, noted Dr. Olanrewaju. “Because it can be stored for up to six to eight hours at the right temperature, the baby can feed on this until the mother returns from work. Then, she can feed the baby directly from her breasts when she gets back home,” he said. However, expressing breast milk comes with its own additional cost, like Mrs. Ajao found out when she first tried using the breast pump after she gave birth. “I had to stop because I couldn’t maintain preserving it in the refrigerator due to lack of electricity,” she complained. Expressed breast milk could go stale if it is not properly stored under the right temperature conditions, because just as with any other type of food, this allows the growth of bacteria, Olanrewaju explained. Despite the country’s electricity problems, using breast pumps has been helpful for some others, especially when they can also afford the extra cost of fuelling their generators to keep the breast milk well refrigerated and fresh. This was what helped Dayo Adekunle, a nursing mother who just finished her mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corp scheme, to breastfeed her now one-year old baby exclusively for the first six months before she introduced him to formula milk. Beyond using breast pumps, medical experts advise mothers to maintain good hygiene while breastfeeding their babies. These include washing their hands, sterilising the bottles and pump parts and immediately storing their breast milk to keep it fresh. Despite the challenges, working and nursing mothers face in keeping up with breastfeeding medical experts have advised that they at least maintain the recommended six months of exclusive breast feeding, because of its many health benefits. “No baby formula milk can compare with breast milk because it contains antibodies to protect the baby from infections. It has been scientifically proven that babies who are not exclusively breast fed have morbidities such as diarrhoea, upper respiratory tract infections, bacterial meningitis and other diseases. They are also prone to having more allergies,” said Dr. Dorka Bekee, a paediatrician. Although it is not 100 per cent guaranteed, the period of breastfeeding could also serve as a form of family planning, added Dr Olanrewaju. “This is because breastfeeding increases the secretion of the prolactin hormone – which helps the breast to produce milk – and also inhibits ovulation. Some women don’t even see their menses during breast feeding,” he said. While Dr. Bekee advised that nursing mothers should eat well to be able to produce enough milk for the baby, this may pose another challenge for a working and nursing mother as they may not be able to properly breastfeed their babies after a hectic day’s job, especially if they put in long working hours. www.naijaurban.com/good-women-stingy-breast-milk/ |
What your feeling about the protracted strike embark by ASUU which is presently in its fourth mouth ? Let know what your opinion is. |

It was learnt that an earlier meeting between Barr. Wike and ASUU leadership teased out areas of possible concession of both sides. Scan News gathered the Federal Government may concede to ASUU the right to participate as a major stakeholder in the execution of NEEDS Implementation Projects in the universities. ASUU had complained that the Suswam Committee excluded them from the implementation of projects in the universities. On the part of ASUU, the meeting agreed that they should suspend their strike, while the process of implementation continues. A Vice Chancellor of a northern university attending the meeting said that key issues will be ratified and the strike may be resolved in less than two weeks. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced the suspension of its week-long strike. The suspension of the strike is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday and signed by the association’s National Secretary, Mr Promise Adewusi. It said that the decision to suspend the strike was informed by the Federal Government’s compliance with the association’s demands. “Following substantial compliance to our demand for the payment of August and September salaries of our members which is the reason for our current national strike action, we hereby suspend the strike and direct all our members to return to their duties with effect from Monday, the 14th of October, 2013.” The statement thanked members of the association for their solidarity, adding that the non payment of the salaries of its members for work done would not happen again. 7 things Every NYSC Corper should do after POP I understand the excitement that goes with passing out of service. In fact, you are so excited, you want the whole world to know. A lot of people show this by sharing their POP pictures and NYSC Certificates on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BBM etc. You won't have to go for the CDS again, no more khaki trousers, no more of those heavy orange boots, and for some, no more issues with your LI and so on and so forth. You just can't wait to pick your NYSC Certificate and run!. The Big question is, run to where? The truth is, it's tougher out there in the Nigerian Labour Market. As a Corper, at least you had a monthly income. But after POP, if not retained at your work place, many of you will go incomeless (if there's a word like that) and hop into the world of job search. The bad news is: Nobody really cares about you. It's cold and rough out there and that's not funny. The good news? I care in my own little way. Consequently, I've compiled 7 tips to help you in this process. 1) Exchange Contacts with Others and keep in Touch: It's very common for most of us to get so drowned in the excitement of passing out. During your POP, don't just pout your lips and take photos with your supposed Corper friends. Exchange phone numbers, emails, BB Pins with them and keep in touch afterwards. This way you can know what is going on in their lives and vice versa. 2) Create a Professional Profile: I've come to realize that a lot of fresh graduates today underestimate the importance of a professionally drafted profile. Prepare a good CV and Cover Letter and keep them handy. Always have a copy in your mail box and if possible in your phone. You never can tell where they will be needed. You don't want to lose that mouth watering job in an Oil Company in Lagos just because you couldn't provide your CV when needed. 3) Relocate to Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt: Talking about Lagos. The truth is, Lagos is a Haven of opportunities. No city in Nigeria has as much opportunities in Nigeria as Lagos. With lots of places to work and lots of things to lay your hands on, from banks to Oil firms, muiltinationals, NGOs, and even to the Entertainment industry! Abuja is another good place to live if you are a job seeker. Though many claim that you have to know somebody who knows somebody that can give you a job. But in all, there are lots of opportunities in the Federal government parastatals, Ministries, International NGOs etc. Last but not the least is Port Harcourt, the Oil city of Nigeria, with a bunch of opportunities in the Oil and Gas industry and other lucrative sectors. My point is, these cities are the job hub of the nation. If you have long being a job seeker and not residing in any of these cities, I guess it's high time you packed your bags and and made a smart move to these any of these cities. 4) Network: Leave your nest and start networking with other professionals. 5) Announce yourself: Except for you parents and siblings, most people really do not care what you are doing. You have to tell them yourself. Let them know your are jobless and need a job. Showcase your skills and qualifications to Employers on the biggest database of job seekers in Nigeria - Manpower Nigeria 6) Play: All work and no play makes you dull. Do you think Exxon Mobil is looking for a dull employee? Hell No! |
President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday to end the doctors’ and university teachers’ strike. The teachers’ is over 90 days. Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) are also on strike. The professionals are blaming the government for failing to meet up with the agreement reached with them. Jonathan promised to end the strike when he received the leaders of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), led by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele. Presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, in a statement on the meeting which reporters were prevented from covering, said the President promised to do his all to resolve all issues that caused disputes. He said the government attached great importance to the medical and educational sectors. He said: “I believe that we must manage both sectors in such a way that nobody engaged in them will think of going on strike again. “We will continue to proactively evolve measures that will help us to permanently overcome the problems that lead to strikes by health and education professionals,” he added. To facilitate rapid establishment of more centres of medical excellence in the country, President Jonathan pledged that the Federal Government would fully explore the option of creating a special intervention fund. www.informationng.com/2013/10/ASUU-strike-will-be-over-soon-jonathan-declares.html |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said yesterday that it has lost faith in the ability of the Federal Government to resolve the lingering crisis in universities. ASUU Chairman at the University of Benin Comrade Anthony Monye-Emina said in Benin that the strike must go on to achieve its desired results. He said the union has lost faith in the Federal Government due to its insincerity over the agreement. He said one of the reasons why they are insisting that their demands must be met is because the government initially denied the existence of the 2009 agreement which was signed by its officials. "We can no longer trust government; we have lost faith in its willingness to deliver on the issues that led to the strike in the first place," he said. m.naij.com/news/49109.html |

This may sound unbelievable but popular music artiste, Chinagorom Onuoha, a.k.a. African China, insists he had 168 kids from different women before he got married. The artiste revealed this in an interview with P.M.NEWS in FESTAC Town, Lagos, on October 6, 2013, Sunday. Onuoha said that he was not a sex-freak but he was unable to turn down sexual advances from his teeming female fans. The artiste, who sometime ago was involved in a sex scandal in the United Kingdom, said he decided to accept the pregnancies because he did not want the ladies to abort the pregnancies. "It is not that I enjoy running after the opposite sex, but as a star, I always find them around me and there is no way I can just chase them away. As a matter of fact, I have an option of telling the ladies to abort the pregnancies but I know the Holy Bible is against such." Raised in the slum of Ajegunle, Onuoha said he wonders why people castigated hip hop artiste, Innocent Idibia, better known as Tuface, for having children from different women. With the sex scandal still haunting him, Onuoha warned people who may want to bring his hard earned reputation into disrepute to be prepared for war. "My brother, some people may want to use the sex scandal against me but they do not know that they may incur the wrath of the law because I have been certified clean by a competent law court in the United Kingdom. Such people would pay through their nose," he said. Commenting on how he is being perceived by his fans for fathering 168 kids, he noted that he bears no grudge over their reactions as he owes them no apology. On his sudden disappearance from the music scene, he said he didn't go off the music circuit but had been in the studio working on a new album that is about to be released. According to him, "I'm not finished yet, I am still in the music industry. My fans who want to see more of me can come to Ibiza Nite Club where I anchor a show." He urged his fans to be prepared for his latest album as it would rock their world and the entire music industry. "It is not as if I'm boasting but I have dedicated so much of my time and energy to it because I have already set a standard and that standard will not drop but will continue to rise because I am born to sing and entertain people." m.naij.com/news/49042.html |
Quoting Bobbymore, a nairalander The question is what does the Vice-chancellors of Universities do with all the fees paid by students, and rents paid by staff living in university quarters?. A breakdown of the fees show that students pay for maintenance, light, medical, sports, library, lab/audio visuals etc, lets say in a hostel the actual students supposed to stay in a room are 4. this number multiplied by hostel charge of N10,000. equals N40000, an average second generation university has at least 30,000 students. Multiply this number to the fees paid by full time students of N25,000 this equals N7500000000. This money can be used to maintain infrastructure, provide equipment in the Universities, but, this isn't the case. University management mis-management all the funds and expect government to provide money. Vice-chancellors connive with bursars to loot the system, after their tenure, they aren't probed. What happened in south south university after their riot a few years back. Each student was asked to pay N10000, from diploma, long distance, to Ph.D students. The school has a total population of over 40,000 students. Multiply that amount, it sums up to N400 million. They spent less than 10 million fixing the damage caused by students, what happened to the rest? What happened to the money? Part time students pay over N60000 a session. Multiply that by 10000 part time students it equals N600 million. The least fees a postgraduate student pays is N150000 a session. Multiply that by 3000 postgraduate students admitted, it equals N450 million. Some universities charge N15000 for P.G forms, multiply that by 3000 people who may apply it equals N45million. Now, for post ume exams, a students pays N2000 for the forms, multiply that 5000 students who may apply into a university, it equals N10 million, there's also the sale of forms for pre- degree and part time undergraduate programmes, monies run into millions of naira each year. The question is what happens to them? Government established TETFUND, there is ETF. This establishment raises billions for tertiary universities. The truth is until corruption is checked in the system it will be hard for us to move ahead. Now ASUU wants 3trillion naira? hmm, I laugh. I now ask, wat do ASUU do with all the money they make? |
bobbymore: Yes, we have such deplorable conditions in our universities. A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Daniel Onwe, has dragged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, southern Nigeria, over the lingering crisis between the two bodies which has led to the closure of public universities in the country since 1 July. In a motion dated 30 September, 2013, Barrister Onwe is seeking an order of court to compel ASUU to call off the strike it embarked upon in protest over the unwillingness of government to implement certain aspects of the agreement they reached over the parlous state of Nigerian universities and other issues. In a 15-paragraph affidavit filed along with the motion, Onwe is asking the court to declare that the indefinite strike embarked upon by ASUU, leading to the closure of government owned universities for three months, violates the fundamental rights of the students affected. He argued that the continued strike action by ASUU has traumatized many students who now engage in all sorts of vices. Onwe posited that the plight of the affected students has worsened as their contemporaries in private universities continue to attend lectures while they remain idle at home. He urged the court to compel ASUU to open the universities for lectures to resume while their negotiation with the Federal Government continues. No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit. http://www.osundefender.org/?p=124993 |

Another issue that calls for concern is the situation at the University of Ilorin. UNILORIN has over the years also failed to join National strike action by ASUU. It is saddening to note that UNILORIN (a federal University) which is set to benefit from the one hundred billion largesse of the FG as a result of the struggle by ASUU is carrying on with its normal academic activity while other Schools are on strike. On Monday, 1st July, 2013, Nigerian Students woke up to the reality that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was proceeding on another industrial action to press home their demands from the Government. Having been a witness of two previous strike actions by ASUU (June, 2009- October, 2009) as well as December 4, 2011-February 2nd, 2012), it did not come as a surprise to someone like me but only reminded me of the sorry situation that now engulfs the Nigerian State in which agreements are no longer sacrosanct. The GEJ led Government has overtime demonstrated its penchant for honouring agreement reached with workers Union and so I felt it was just one of those low-points in our polity. More than ninety (90) days into the strike, unfortunately, it appears that a solution to the intractable crises is far from near thus leaving Nigerian Students to languish at home. Indeed, Nigerian Students have thus been left at the Mercy of GEJ and the Dr Isa Faggae led ASUU. The strike action has once again forced Nigerian Students to become idle hands. Day in day out, we read of undergraduates involved in prostitution, armed robbery, drug-related offences and so on (needless to say we students pay dearly whenever ASUU proceeds on strike). In as much as I support ASUU in their demands for improved infrastructure in our ivory towers, payment of Earned allowances, adjustment of retirement age as well as other demands, the modus operandi and circumstances surrounding the strike has thrown up a lot of questions which are begging for answers. According to the Press statement by the ASUU President, Dr Isa Faggae at the commencement of the strike, ASUU expressed its solidarity with lecturers at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST). RSUST lecturers have been at logger heads with the Governor of Rivers state, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi over the re-appointment of Prof B.B Fakae as Vice-Chancellor of the institution. ASUU alleged that his appointment did not follow due process in the first instance and that he shouldn’t be considered for reappointment, while I am not against expressing solidarity to compatriots in struggle, what amuses me however is that ASUU is fighting on behalf of people who themselves are not fighting. It is unfortunate and saddening that while ASUU national body proclaimed a nationwide strike to force the FG honour the agreement, lecturers at RSUST have been carrying on as if all is well. They disregarded ASUU’s national directive and are currently teaching their Students. What then is the stake of ASUU regarding the crises at RSUST? Is ASUU not crying more than the bereaved? Another issue that calls for concern is the situation at the University of Ilorin. UNILORIN has over the years also failed to join National strike action by ASUU. It is saddening to note that UNILORIN (a Federal university) which is set to benefit from the one hundred billion largesse of the FG as a result of the struggle by ASUU is carrying on with its normal academic activity while other schools are on strike. Are some animals more equal than the other? ASUU UNILORIN is not sweating yet they are set to reap from the sweat of others, I believe this ought not to be so. Lest I forget, ASUU is also demanding that the re-engaged UNILORIN 49 gets their salary, allowances and entitlements for sabbatical leave and promotions yet the lecturers are not participating in the National strike. This appears to me like the case of ‘’Monkey dey work, both baboon and Monkey dey chop’’. The on-going strike actions have also raised posers about the involvement of state Varsities in the strike action. Knowing fully well that State Varsities are not under the control of the FG, it is therefore worrisome that State Universities are participating in a strike action that favours mostly Federal Universities and their staff. State Varsities were only co-opted into the gains of the current struggle in 2012, why then did they participate in the past strike actions by ASUU when they were not affected? Is it a case of solidarity? If they are solidarising with Federal workers, will Federal workers also reciprocate when it comes to their turn? I still foresee bigger crises in state Universities by the time National ASUU calls off their own strike action as state lecturers will have to go back to their state Government to get their own Earned allowances, adjustment to retirement age and other sundry issues in the 2009 FGN/ ASUU agreement. This was what happened after National ASUU called off its own strike action in February last year only for some state Universities to continue for as many more months. I believe State Governments are not bound by any agreement between the FG and workers and thus state lecturers should forthwith enter negotiations with their respective state Government to avoid another round of strike action in the State Universities. It is therefore my opinion that ASUU needs to explain why its struggles will benefit RSUST and UNILORIN yet they didn’t down tools as directed. Let me also use this opportunity to plead with the FG to not for anything else but for the sake of its honour and giving an Independence gift to Nigerian Students honour its agreement with not only ASUU but other Staff Unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Senior staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-academic staff Union (NASU). These agreements seek to place our tertiary institutions back on the path of greatness and it should be faithfully and judiciously implemented. —— www.ynaija.com/opinion-ASUU-strike-unilorin-and-rsust-needs-to-answer-these-questions/ |
