In the race of trying meet up with the very trends of the modern times; the glamour, glitz and glitterati, no Nigerian lady would willingly date a poor guy. Truth be told, you are either balling hard or cast away.

A lady would say she needs to be ‘taken care of’ and as such if you cant come up with funds some of her necessary and unnecessary demands you are done for. Where does that now leave the poor guys? Jason explains.

Jason Njoku the CEO and Co-Founder of iROKO Partners in this video from Speakerseriesafrica says it all and many more. Watch video.

Science/TechnologyMy Thoughts And Deductions On The Just Concluded Nigeria App Summit by Kagawa(op): 5:06pm On Nov 07, 2013
I just sat there in traffic, wishing I could just swap or thumb an app on my Tecno android device and instantly appear at the app summit in Eko Hotels and suites. But this I knew wasn’t possible. Not just yet, maybe in a distant and unforeseen future i guess.

Why had no one thought about that, no one down here (Nigeria) I mean, because I know the westerners whom I like to call the ‘master juju-ists’ definitely will shock us some time soon. Won’t it save us all the hassle and ruffle of driving our cars or entering public transportation? Traffic in my city Lagos is mean. I tweeted yesterday that living in Lagos State is not for the lean, weak or feeble hearted. The gargantuan stress the city people go through is a chief tranquilizer and always something worth mailing abroad about. The same stress I underwent on my way to the Nigerian Apps Summit a couple of days ago.

I mean, this idea of jumping, teleporting, disappearing here and appearing elsewhere precluded with all other possibilities could be conceived properly, developed and converted into an app of which all laws governing it would be fully stated, and its modus operandi explained to save the world and my people (Nigerians) the thought of it being a diabolical something.

I mean explain to me why I pick up a plastic or metallic casing with over a thousand electronic components and wires in it, thumb some digits, place it to my ear and get to hear the voice of a friend or loved one who is thousands of miles away? Explain to me why I sit on my sitting room cushion; thumb another casing with electrons while aiming it at a big black almost flat slab with a glass surface and end up being in control of turning it on, and switching plays of events happening at locations thousands of miles away and then switching it off. Explain to me why this does not sound or looks like a juju something. It’s simple; the sweetness of the yam is in its pudding just as these are in their explanations. Let me end this here.

One can never predict the traffic in my city, Lagos. I’ve lived here for more than 22 years now, and many a time I still fall victim after undermining or miss-predicting it. The same happened on that ‘appful’ Tuesday morning, caught in the middle of it all, the combined sense of decay and vitality, the suffocating, exhaust-spewing traffic, the congestion, the noise, the dust, the bumper to fender, the shouts and abuses, Lagos my city is wonderful and always exhilarating.

While sitting it out and waiting in the drag and draw, I felt the need to catch up on the summit via twitter timelines or a hash-tag. I searched and all I found were just tweets a couple of days old, of which like three to four of them were mine. One was from my blog feed where I earlier pondered on what to expect at the summit. I didn’t find what I was looking for, why? Why were people not tweeting about the app summit? This was my second disappointment. The traffic that held me captive was my first.

Many weeks back I was at the Ted-talks, Tedx Lagos held at the Oriental hotels, and trust me the on a mare search of Tedx or Tedxlagos, one sees live tweets from the event. Tedxlagos (official handle for the event), Spectraspeaks, Aimlegend_ among many other digital culture and tech savvy-ists made sure one didn’t miss a thing if one wasn’t there live. Now here is my question, where were these people on the day of the app summit? Judging by the details of the event from the eventbrite website, I predicted the event would be massive and the twitter timelines streaming with live tweets and remarks. My heart danced all the while I anticipated the very day, pity I anticipated too much.

I got to the venue after losing an hour plus, the sits, the stage, well-arranged, ok, a shiny glass, bottled water, notepad and pen carefully placed for every sitter, ok. What else marveled me; yes the combination of the architectural design of the ceiling of the hall, the walls, and the female ushers both evoked for me something valiant and beautiful, like the Pre-Raphaelite frontispiece showing Helen of Troy in my Children’s Book of Iliad, which I’d owned once upon a time. Above all, the insights from the speakers (which I shall detail in another post) were illuminating thereafter although I must say that judging from how much Ben Lazarus connected with the Nigerian audience at the last Ted-talks in Lagos, I felt the white speakers would have to take a lesson or two from him.

Elo Umeh CEO of Terragon Group and Twine’s speech, slides and infographics on Nigerian apps usage was really on point. I would have loved to share that with you but I’m yet to get the slide although I’ve posted a request for it. Hopefully it’ll be in my next post ‘post ‘Excerpts and Talks from the Nigeria Apps Summit’.

Why the event which was proudly sponsored by Etisalat wasn’t louded much, beats my imagination for were it to be a musical event, fun-fest, comedy show, it’ll have gathered more dust. Or was it that the time of the event just didn’t go well with the digi-culture and Tech Savvy-ists who couldn’t be there? Maybe that was the case. Yet thinking about the Tedtalks which was a huge hit makes me suggest the organizers would have to do more publicity next time. Again judging from the details of the event as it was listed on an event website I expected an apps display or showcase as I was hoping to learn more about the Nigerians who think they are crazy enough to try to change the world.

Lastly I must say that my country people always live up to expectation as many left after the networking and refreshment session. More than 65% of them, although while during this time a couple of execs I met jokingly confessed that they were there just for the food and one was a bit dissapointed that it wasn’t heavy food but mere Coffee, Juice and Sandwich.

CareerWhat Recruiters Look At During The 6 Seconds They Spend On Your Resume by Kagawa(op): 7:52am On Nov 04, 2013
Although we may never know why we didn't get chosen for a job interview, a recent study is shedding some light on recruiters' decision-making behavior. According to TheLadders research, recruiters spend an average of "six seconds before they make the initial 'fit or no fit' decision" on candidates.

The study used a scientific technique called “eye tracking” on 30 professional recruiters and examined their eye movements during a 10-week period to "record and analyze where and how long someone focuses when digesting a piece of information or completing a task."

In the short time that they spend with your resume, the study showed recruiters will look at your name, current title and company, current position start and end dates, previous title and company, previous position start and end dates, and education.

The two resumes below include a heat map of recruiters' eye movements. The one on the right was looked at more thoroughly than the one of the left because of its clear and concise format:

recruiters resumeTheLadders
With such critical time constraints, you should make it easier for recruiters to find pertinent information by creating a resume with a clear visual hierarchy and don't include distracting visuals since "such visual elements reduced recruiters’ analytical capability and hampered decision-making" and kept them from "locating the most relevant information, like skills and experience."

BusinessIfeanyi Uwadia: You Either Have A Seductive Story, Or You End Up Home Alone by Kagawa(op): 8:25am On Nov 02, 2013
Business proposals are written in order to benefit from or leverage on a loan, investor or partner. Whatever the purpose, it is done to build a new relationship. However, more often than not, many business proposals rather than achieve the intended purpose, crash and burn.

Business proposals can be pretty boring and stuffy. This is mostly because lots of proposals are either written by persons who feel the best way to make an impression is by bragging about themselves and their conquests, or by persons who feel it’s best to say whatever they think the evaluator wants to see to gain acceptance. Either way, the resultant effect can be really annoying, turning off the customers, investors and potential partners that it is meant to attract.

Sex sells, they say. And it is true; people desire to get close to attractive persons. It therefore follows that if your proposals are attractive, then naturally evaluators would want to get closer to your company. They will desire to talk to you, want to spend time with you and of course consider your proposal favorably. Still, they will want to find out if you will work well together, if you’ll make a perfect match, if you share common goals, and if you can be trusted.

How do you build a new relationship? First off, there are people who put loads of effort into landing short term relationships, hitting on anyone and everyone until someone gives in. Then there are those who are really choosy and stick to their own standards. In the first case, short term relationships may be easily formed, yet would fail to meet long term needs. In the second instance, a long lasting and fulfilling relationship can be successfully formed depending on how good their standards are assuming they are good at the pursuit. Which of these categories do you fall into?
How do you introduce yourself? Truly, when introductions come from family or friends, they make the best impressions, still there are times when you've got to run things on your own and introduce yourself. Your introduction has to command and hold their attention and make them stick around long enough to want to know more about you and what you've got to say. The introduction paves way for you to tell your story. Your story either makes you attractive, or not.

Now that you've got your foot in the door, what do you talk about? If your story is attractive, then you get a chance to prove yourself, a chance to be seductive. And if you are persuasively seductive then the other person will be willing to take a chance and turn themselves over to you. Know that you can’t get them to turn themselves over to you by telling them what you think they want to hear. You have got to be genuine.

Are your proposals persuasive? Do you even have a story? If you do, is it seductive? Does it hold your customers’ attention and make them want to know more about you? Is it something the customer wants to become a part of?

If you've got a particular target or customer, you need to tell the right story. Is it about a short-term or a long term relationship? Is it about getting something that you both want, or about having a future together? Is the environment simple or complicated — are there others involved? If you want a future together or the environment is complicated, you need to know your customer before you’ll know what buttons to push.
No matter how much you work on your pick up lines, if you don’t invest in knowing your customer before you try to seduce them, you’re likely going to end up going home alone.

Google+ Hits 300 Million Active Monthly Users

During a special event yesterday that also saw the introduction of 18 new features, Google bragged about the growth of its “social layer”. Google+ which has struggled in Nigeria to get audience since introduction on June 28, 2011 because apparently twitter and Facebook still rules. But that’s just here. According to wikipedia is the second-largest social networking site in the world after Facebook, and 500 million people had created Google Plus accounts as of December 2012.

The big numbers Google bragged about are as follows:

540 million monthly active Google+ users: This is the number of people with Google accounts that interact with Google+ each month in some way on any Google property. That could include leaving a comment on a blog or website that has Google+ comments embedded, commenting on YouTube, or clicking the +1 button on an article or some other web content.

300 million monthly active “in-stream” users: This is the number of people that see/visit the Google+ content stream. It’s also considered by many to be the closest thing to the “monthly active users” that other sites (like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.). Never the less its a welcome stat as this will show those who are still pessimistic about the ‘plus’ will change their minds. I personally launched my own page on Google plus and have been loving it ever since. You should too.

Twitter pulls a Facebook, fills streams with photos and videos

Twitter launched a new feature that adds images and video previews to a user’s timeline automatically, instead of the links normaly seen, a move that is clearly designed to appeal to advertisers — but will it wind up irritating more users than it attracts? While the company said in a blog post that it made the changes so that users could enjoy their friends’ photos and videos more easily, it seems fairly obvious that the move is also to justify its estimated $15-billion market value as it prepares to go public in a couple of weeks. Like Facebook, it is focusing on advertising, and in order to do that it has to push more and more content into the stream, and boost engagement levels as high as possible.

IBM gives up fight to build CIA’s $600m secret cloud, hands deal to Amazon

IBM has stumbled away from its legal tussle with Amazon over a strategically important contract to build a $600m cloud system for the CIA.

Today Big Blue withdrew its formal protest against the spooks’ decision to use the online bazaar’s technology, effectively ceding the massive contract to Jeff Bezos & Co. It also marks a shift in the balance of power among federal IT contractors.

For years IBM and a coterie of other huge companies – Oracle, HP, Dell, SAP, SAS, Verizon, and so on – have taken the largest share of public cash for government computer projects.

But all things come to an end, and the CIA’s decision to plump for Amazon’s private cloud over IBM’s earlier this year signaled a changing of the guard. It also blew away some of the clouds of fear, uncertainty and doubt that incumbent suppliers had spread about upstarts.

IBM protested the CIA decision, and Amazon unleashed its own lawyers to fight back. A federal judge struck down IBM’s objection earlier this month, and now IBM has withdrawn its final complaint, effectively bowing out of the race.

California Woman Gets the First Ticket for Driving with Google Glass

History was made as Cecilia Abadie told her story on Google+ late Tuesday night, and shared an image of the citation that she got while driving in the San Diego. This is history: the first known case of a Glass Explorer getting a ticket for driving while wearing Google Glass. The ticket was apparently given as a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 27602, which addresses “Television” use inside motor vehicles:

A person shall not drive a motor vehicle if a television receiver, a video monitor, or a television or video screen, or any other similar means of visually displaying a television broadcast or video signal that produces entertainment or business applications, is operating and is located in the motor vehicle at a point forward of the back of the driver’s seat, or is operating and the monitor, screen, or display is visible to the driver while driving the motor vehicle.

Oculus Rift virtual reality headset coming to mobile

Oculus VR announced that it’s bringing its virtual-reality headset, the Oculus Rift, to mobile gaming. Chief executive officer Brendan Iribe divulged the surprising move during his keynote chat Tuesday morning at the GamesBeat 2013 video game conference. The goal is to have the mobile version launch simultaneously — or as close as possible to — when the PC headset launches. The mobile Rift headset is for Android devices — iOS is problematic, and the company has not mentioned any plans for an iOS-compatible version. This device will be a lighter, consumer version, and it will use the mobile device’s processor.

Google shows off second gen Google Glass w/ mono earbud coming later this year

After announcing yesterday that Google Glass hardware would be revised later this year and offered to current Glass Explorers interested in swapping to a newer unit, Google today gives us a look at the second generation Glass in the images above posted to Google+.

On top of introducing a new mono earbud instead of only the bone-vibrating speaker included in the first generation Glass, Google said the hardware revision will also make Glass compatible with new lines of sunglasses and prescription frames and Explorers will have their choice of colors when they swap sometime later this year.

Google hinted it will begin the first steps of the exchange program in November and will give users 60 days to make the swap. Explorers are still the only ones that can get their hands on the $1500 Google Glass, but Google recently started letting users invite up to three friends to join the program and will now ship Glass to those that join.

NYSCDear Ex Corps Member Your Future Is Next, Start Now - Agina Victor by Kagawa(op): 6:41pm On Oct 28, 2013
I got motivated to write this story and letter to the ‘otondos’ of the Federal Republic of Nigeria a forth night ago after a jobless friend of mine received a phone call from another very fresh jobless friend; an otondo who had just left the NYSC camp, she was desperately begging for N200 recharge card. So I asked my friend, ‘does she realize you are jobless?’ So my friend responded to her saying ‘you just left camp, you should be the one sending me card, and don’t you have savings?’ Oh! Lest I forget, if you are non-Nigerian, Otondo is a name commonly used to qualify Nigerian graduates undergoing the one year compulsory National Youth Service Corp program, the intent of the program is to prepare the fresh graduates for job market.

If you are a Youth Corps member reading this piece, I advice you read it in its entirety. For the majority of you, ‘life na per head’ after you leave the NYSC camp so it’s high time you started planning in advance because ‘mehnn… ‘The thing hard for plenty otondo oh! Very few with high connect get jobs immediately after service year, but for the majority ‘you go send CV taya, you go call people wey promise you job taya, you go waka go companies wey dem no invite you’ and after you exhaust all your options, the harsh reality of life would set in, frustration. Then it would seem like your world is falling apart after you have spent 5 years in the University. It’s so sad! What do you do to avert this kind of situation? Now, this is what I need you to do for me, get a piece of paper and write down; I am waiting! You ready now?

1. What are your goals?
Have you ever thought about this? Honestly, I can’t answer that question for you, it’s imperative that you have a general sense of what you want to be and how you want to get there. Do you want to build a career? In what field of Study? Do you want to be a CEO? How do you get there? Do you want to own your own business? What kind of business specifically? Starting small or big? How do you raise funds? These questions are left for you to figure out; it’s okay if you don’t have answers yet. You can wake up in the middle of the night or whenever is convenient or cool for you to seek answers to these questions. It doesn’t matter if it’s not detailed from the outset, just write it down, you can always re-write and make it firmer.

2. What are you good at doing?
Everyone knows how to do at least one thing! Look within, there has to be something you can do; don’t just say nothing! You see, I could write but just never knew how well until I asked myself the same questions; now I am writing and you are reading my piece, isn’t that cool? If you intend to work, what are your best work attributes or strengths? Can you effectively make use of the Microsoft Applications? Can you relate with people in the most courteous manner? Can you fix computers? Write down at least 5 things you are good at.

3. Do you have hobbies you would love to turn into business?
For most musicians, music was a hobby that translated to wealth; they just love what they do and if you notice, many of them started at a young age; they knew what they wanted right from day one. Is there something you like doing for passion or pleasure? Can you leverage on that and form a business around it? During my NYSC days, we had this performer and entertainer by name ‘Eddy Piper’, hope I got the spelling. He was the ‘ frigidi frogodo’ master, whatever that meant, I really don’t know; that was his music lines. He had a plan to get deployed to silver bird so he could leverage on their platform in order to accentuate and translate his hobby into business. I saw his video years back, I was happy for him. Look within; I am so sure you will find a hubby that can be translated into business.

If you don’t have answers to the questions above, it’s okay! This is what you can do, learn a skill. As a Youth Corps member, I believe you have the time to invest in a course; it could be a weekend class! There are hundreds of skills you can acquire; some of them are free while some are paid. If you have to pay to get knowledge, please do! After all NYSC alawi is about N20,000, a much larger sum than what was obtained during my time, N9,750! Once you have a skill or a hobby, you can research to learn more about what people in that field are already doing and how they are doing it. The essence of this is to enable you have a structured plan on what you want to achieve and also set a timeline to achieve it. What would you do one year after NYSC if you can’t get a job? In 5 years time, what would you have achieved? Where do you project your business would have gotten to?

The best time to start planning for your future is now! If you are stuck in between, you can use the help of a mentor or contact me, I will be willing to give a word or two. Remember, ‘he who fails to plan, plans to fail’. It’s high time you started thinking outside the box! You can avoid that ‘frustrating situation’ right now, you can be that fulfilled person in the next 5 years instead of the one who nags and complains about the situation of things. There is no better time to secure your future but now!

Watch out for the next series!

I wish you the best.

CareerBe Persistent, Get Used To The Rejection - Akinsanmi Simi by Kagawa(op): 6:22pm On Oct 28, 2013
At every point in our lives we have suffered rejection at some point, our ideas seem crappy, we get rejected by friends, spouses, the society, our mentors, we get fired, marriage proposal turned down etc. These and many others are forms of rejection.

Rejection may take different forms but this time around we will focus on rejection in relation to our dreams or desires being fulfilled. I have listed some cases of famous people who endured rejection and eventually became role models.

I take rejection as someone blowing a bulge to wake me up and get going, rather than retreat.

Sylvester Stallone- Actor, writer, and Director.

Handling rejection is not a child’s play and often times demoralizing, it takes lots of courage and determination to move on. Determination fuels our dream, it keeps pushing us forward, however we are very lucky to have some examples of role models we can learn from.

Some are listed here.

When Alexander Graham Bell offered the rights to the telephone for 100,000USD to Carl Orton, President of Western Union, Orton replied, “what use would this company make of an electrical toy?”

Angie Evenhart who started modelling at the age of 16, was once told by model agency owner Eileen Ford that she would never make it as a model. Why not? “Redheads don’t sell.” Evenhart later became the first redhead in history to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine, had a great modelling career, and then went on to appear in 27 films and numerous TV shows.

Novelist Stephen King almost made a multimillion dollar mistake when he threw his Carrie manuscript in the garbage because he was tired of the rejections. “we are not interested in science fiction which deals with negative utopias,” he was told. “they do not sell.” Luckily his wife fished it out in the garbage. Eventually Carrie was printed by another publisher, sold more than 4 million copies and was made into a blockbuster movie.

In 1998, Google co-founders Sergy Brin and Larry Page approached Yahoo! and suggested a merger. Yahoo! could have snapped up the company for a handful of stocks but instead they suggested that the young “Googlers” keep working on their little school project and come back when they had grown up. In 2012, Google made 50billion USD in revenue and a total equity of 71.72 billion USD according to wikepedia.

It is impossible to sell animal stories in the USA (from the rejection slip of George Orwell’s animal farm)

The record of the most outstanding number of rejections would probably be John Creasey’s. A popular British mystery writer, Creasey collected 743 rejection slips before he sold his 1st book! Impervious to rejection, over the next 40 years he went on to publish 562 full length books under 28 different pseudonyms! If John Creasey can handle 743 rejections on his way to success, so can you.

We have to look beyond ourselves and learn from every negative feedback. Remember those who quit don't win.

The cases in this write up were culled from "How to get from where you are to where you want to be".

LiteratureAgina Victor: Plunge Into The Sea – Face The Sharks! by Kagawa(op): 12:00pm On Oct 14, 2013
Why did it bite me? Why did it?” The words of a diver from a Nat Geo Wild documentary series. I laughed when I heard those questions. Right in mind I thought ‘Who Send You Message?’ She had been bitten by a shark while in the deep sea; it was a deep cut, she was bleeding profusely, but did it stop her from going into the sea after recovery? NO, it didn’t. This piece isn’t really about her exclamation, but about her courage to do what she needed to do despite the high level of risk. She knew sharks existed in the sea, but she plunged into it because of her love and passion for what she does.

These guys take risks because they love what they do. I try to relate this kind of situation to other life experiences. We humans are just too scared to get out there and face life as it is. Life is not for the feeble minded, neither is it for those who are not willing to get out of their comfort zones and do what is needed to be fulfilled in life.

Are you scared of failing? Are you scared of death? We are all going to die someday anyway. I have learnt a lot about animals because the guys at Nat Geo Wild have decided to do something differently; it amazes me how these guys go about playing around with wild animals, it’s risky but it’s fun and they love what they do. Listen, I am not asking you to join the Nat Geo Wild team. But the point is, you have got to do something different and take certain level of risks in order to achieve most of your set goals. Your life becomes an inspiration and learning reference for younger generations to come.

Get out there, get bitten by wild animals, face your fears and fail as many times as possible, it is in failing that you learn more and get better. I am not going to mention the names of prominent people who have failed, we all know the stories; what kept them going despite all odds was the believe that someday they will get it right. I hear a lot of workers whining and complaining about how unfulfilling their jobs are, how they are underpaid and made to work their asses off, how they work 9-5 or 5-9 as with the typical Lagos scenario and burn themselves out, how their social life is dead and how their jobs consume them so much leaving them with little time for themselves and bla bla bla. Enough of all these complaints! You are not happy where you are and you think they don’t have a choice, you think they are going to die without your monthly pay, you expect a miracle; some kind of change like a better job with a better pay but the truth is you still complain when you get the so-called ‘ better job’. Remember lifestyle changes with a pay raise.

My question is this; are you happy where you are? Are you one of those who nag about the situation of things? Do you honestly think complaining is going to change things for good? How much longer are you going to hang in there? Are you using your God given potential to its fullest? It’s a pity that most people die with their talents after slaving for other people. I am not advising you to quit your paid job, I am just saying, if it’s not fulfilling, why stay there and nag yourself to death! Well, it’s true that most workers are clueless of what to do outside their jobs; this is because their brain and mind have been configured to work based on a system structured by another man, a system setup to drain you. They always take back what they give to you. If you are feeling lost and don’t know what to do, invest in a business course!

There are people who work for others, love what they do and try not to complain; these kind of people are so comfortable in their comfort zone, they are going to work and retire on their job and receive pension; if you are this person, it’s good I give you kudos but just wait until you retire or get laid off then you face the reality of life when you are least prepared or when your strength has been zapped! On a final note, some people are meant to work for others; like a friend said, if everyone has a business, who will serve in the Marines? Who will teach the students? Everyone can’t own a school right? Well, this message is not meant for everyone. If you want to be remembered after you are gone, do something worth writing about or write something worth reading. Ask yourself, what are you known for? When your name is mentioned what do people think of? I am not trying to base my analogy on those who work for people; if you find yourself complaining about life and everything around you, this is also for you. Stop nagging, do something differently! You have an idea, put it down on paper, structure it, and implement it; you can start working on a project with your little savings while you work, but if your work gets in your way, QUIT! You will be glad you did! Are you scared? Did I make your heart skip a beat? Do you feel gel in your knees? I will say no further! The ball is on your court my dear friend! Don’t be scared, you have got all it takes; first you need to understand your purpose in life. The world is yours for the taking.

I wish you the best!

Cheers!

Nairaland GeneralAkinsanmi Simi: Every Day You Ask For Change, You Sef Bring Change! by Kagawa(op): 9:41am On Oct 08, 2013
The above statement was an utterance of an angry bus conductor (a local commercial bus driver’s apprentice) in Lagos, Nigeria and it instantly went viral.

The norm is that when passengers board commercial buses in Lagos, they pay conductors with higher denominations and sometimes it is done intentionally. This in turn triggers a lot of frustration on the part of these conductors and drivers as they struggle hard to return the difference after subtracting the fare back to the passengers.

Sometimes these guys will buy some lower denominations from people who sell; this comes at an extra cost of 10 percent deficit. For instance if a conductor carries 20 passengers at 100 naira per person, Assuming about 3 of the passengers hand him 500 naira notes, 4 others hand him 1000 naira notes, wahala don start be that. He has to figure out how to return the change to these very impatient and naggy passengers. I believe this was a similar scenario to Kola’s. Out of frustration he screamed “EVERY DAY YOU ASK FOR CHANGE, YOU SEF BRING CHANGE! ”

Kola’s statement went viral, my guess is one of the passengers twitted it. However, there are some positives we can learn from this. Kola had unconsciously stated the obvious. The average Nigerian is full of criticism for our government we ask for change like tomorrow no de, I am also guilty of this. In fact, I nag more than anyone else. How do you explain/justify the level of decadence in the society? Everything seem to be crumbling, the government has repeatedly showed us that they are clueless, Just this morning, I read online that the FG(federal government) has ordered 53 gold plated Apple Iphones at about almost 400M Naira (source withheld).

Mehn I was furious, some months back, the FG ordered Phones for 6000 farmers, till date I cannot see any sense in that. That said, in every adversity there are the exemptions. Some governors are working very hard to ensure they turn the destinies of their states around.

If we think deeply about Kola’s statement, Instead of asking for change, why not initiate the change. Instead of condemning these leaders why not strategize and form focus groups in our locality to probably volunteer and solve specific problems, soon the ripple effect of these changes will be felt everywhere.

Remember, leaders were once followers, every person at any level of leadership were from the masses. The truth is nothing will change until we are ready for this change. Maybe the problem is that we don’t prepare for leadership and when the opportunity presents itself either by merit or otherwise, our lack of vision and preparation forms the bedrock of our inability to leave a positive mark. It’s easier to sit and do nothing and criticize, try and influence those on your street before you criticize anyone in leadership.

Every major change throughout history comes with a cost. One of my philosophies of life is that “the task master will not let you go until you are ready to fight back”. I read of a particular area in Ibadan on nairaland.com where the youths asked PHCN to do away with power supply until there’s stable electricity. This just a simple way of fighting back… In short we won’t pay for your service, don’t give it to us… Simple!

I am not asking for a revolution or war, NO; I am only admonishing us to fight back and get set for leadership. My grandfathers and parents sang the same song I am singing … “I know one day e go better” but the truth is we have to create the future we want now. I don’t want to sing same song to my unborn kids. Let’s all make it a point of duty to be the change, let’s take an advantage of our powers and disallow a privileged few loot what is more than enough to go round.

Soon, we will go to the polls to probably elect the same set of people, those who have the vision and will don’t have the resources, those who have the resources are clueless, what a vicious cycle. Imagine if we refuse to give or accept bribes, Imagine if all employers decide to employ based on merit, Imagine if churches and religious bodies rise to the challenge and say enough, Imagine if we decide to curb the excesses of our government and ask for a change politely, or you think we can’t get there? Let me quote Adidas “impossible is nothing”. We had our chance though, we lost it. We were to occupy Nigeria till we see some changes but I guess no one wants to die.

Just last night I read via Easynet sms that an 8 year old child bride bled to death on her wedding night in one of the northern states. I remembered me commenting on change.org that every professional woman should down tools until the law is reversed, however our selfish nature deprives us of our unity of purpose. Even the blind can see Nigeria’s sicknesses, but if we decide to be the change, then we have a hope.

Unfortunately, things have gotten so bad that one will have to wear some binoculars to see if there’s any light at the end tunnel for our dear country. However, if we all decide to be the change, gradually things will improve.

God bless Nigeria plus happy belated birthday to our dear country.

FoodSoup And Stew – Fixing A Kitchen Dilemma For Busy Professionals by Kagawa(op): 4:16am On Sep 05, 2013
Tunde, 26, works in a bank, hasn’t had a girlfriend, at least not since his NYSC days where he hardly had anything to do for most days except fill the sign-in form at the Local Government where he served. His busiest days were on CDS days when he had to marshal traffic in an obscure town in Kogi.

A lot has changed since his service days and back in Lagos where he grew up and schooled, his new job was taking the toll on him. His day started at 4 am when he got up, and when he left his apartment roughly an hour later, he was hardly home before 10 pm. No thanks to the long hours of work, gruesome traffic and of course the ban on okadas. It wasn’t until he got to his untarred and unlit street that he remembered that he really hadn’t had anything to eat all day. Luckily for him, there were the Hausa guys who made noodles and egg just two blocks from his house. So for months, Tunde’s diet basically consisted of a quick bite of one pastry or another to go with a soft drink, noodles and the occasional half decent meals from the dingy restaurant a few minutes’ walk from his office.

When he heard about Soup and Stew, not only was he excited, Tunde felt like he found something that had been missing from his life. Basically the guys at Soup and Stew simply had to take the order of what he wanted for the week, any of the wide varieties of Nigerian Soups, or Stew and sometimes both, served in 4 liter bowls with an assortment of pomo, dried fish, meat, and whatever it is he specially requested for and they made it readily available with free delivery. Now all he had to do was, boil rice or simply just make eba and he was good to go.
Tunde spent less on fast foods, during the weekends which was what he used to do, and believed his diet had become reasonably healthier since he signed on to Soup and Stew’s specially designed service. For a price of N5,000 for 4 liters of Soup or Stew, Tunde was certain he was on to a good deal, all he had to do was refrigerate his soup or stew, grateful that power was more stable in his area now than when he first moved in, and then depending on whether he was having rice or ‘swallow’ food was essentially ready in 30 minutes.

But of course Tunde isn’t the only one plagued with the dilemma of having to eat out in restaurants and fast food places, spending heavily on junk and never having to eat in the comfort of their home. So whether you are the very busy professional, and or entrepreneur, or you are simply not just kitchen friendly, whether you are male or female, Soups and Stew can hook you up quick time with the most amazing and delicious bowls of whatever it is you are craving, plus did I mention delivery is free anywhere in Lagos? Science/TechnologyLeap Motion -the Whole New Way To Interact With Your Computer Without Touching by Kagawa(op): 6:23pm On Aug 28, 2013
They call it
A tiny device with a huge idea.

Ten fingers, two hands and one huge leap. This tiny device is technologies biggest advancement. Now you can interact with your device in real natural ways, just like the human you are.

Imagine if you could do things on your computer just like you do them in real life. If natural hand movements took the very place of all those clicks and taps and drags and drops. Imagine if technology finally figured out people, instead of the other way around. That’s how leap motion sees the future.

The Leap Motion Controller senses your hands and fingers and follows their every move. It lets them move in all that wide-open space between you and your computer. So you can do almost anything without touching anything. It’s the tiny device that just might change the way you use technology. It’s the world’s most natural technology that just might change the world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b4w749Tud8&feature=player_embedded
It goes where no device has gone before.

With a wave of a hand or lift of a finger, you’re about to use your computer in a whole new way. The Leap Motion Controller senses how you move your hands the way you naturally move them. So you can point, wave, reach, and grab. Even pick something up and put it down. Just like in real life. It’s an amazing device for the things you do every day and for things you never thought you could do. Just $79.99.
Do almost anything without touching anything.

You can only do so much on a computer with clicks and taps. But with the Leap Motion Controller and our apps, nothing’s holding hands and fingers back. So almost anything's possible.

Browse the web, draw, paint, read articles, use a real pencil, paint brush, slice fruits, shoot badguys with your finger, drive a car with the motion of your hands as if controlling an invincible wheel, sculpt, mold, bend, stretch, build 3d designs, play music, type on air, finger digital guitar, reach into the universe, grab the stars, moon, even the sun.
A little bit of magic. A lot of freedom.

All that wide open space between you and your computer is now just for hands and fingers. The Leap Motion Controller senses almost every little move they make, and every big one, too. Technically speaking, it’s 8 cubic feet of interactive, three-dimensional space. But you can say it’s magic.

It’s a new frontier for hands and fingers.

Apps designed for Leap Motion are unlike apps you’ve seen before, because this technology never existed before. Crush bad guys with your bare hands. Make music and art with just a finger. Soar around the sun. Reach for the stars (seriously). You’ll be way more into gaming, designing, creating, and exploring when you can interact in 3D. With apps also made to control your OS, the Leap Motion Controller is an easy, natural, and fun way to browse the web, read articles, and move around your desktop. There’s only one place to discover these all-new kinds of apps: Airspace.

Science/TechnologyRim’s Blackberry: A Story Of Missed Opportunities And Secret Coup That Failed by Kagawa(op): 5:06am On Aug 17, 2013
Blackberry announced officially its plan to find buyers 3 days ago and Robin Chan a tech venture capital investor decided to publish his forgotten coup plan.

1 year ago, Robin — who has assisted in funding Twitter, Square and Foursquare, among others tech start ups — made a secret take over plan that would have redeemed BlackBerry from its plunge into despond.

"BBX" was the name of the plan: Chan planned on selling this idea to a few heads and raising $6 million before approaching RIM with the idea. The plan was just about cutting a lot of edges and simplifying the company.

This BBX — could have changed BlackBerry's management and system, and subsequently dump the phone's operating system. As replacement, Chan planed to make what he called android 'fork', a version of Android embodying some of BlackBerry's own functionality and styling inside. This would save the company development costs, and please employees who preferred Android over Blackberry.

He felt that moving the company to a customer tier which was highly in demand was the best way to go. Chan sited that RIM missed out on massive ecosystem shift centered around app development due to its inability to adapt swiftly new paradigms, such as touchscreens and app ecosystems such as google and apple. That RIM's dominance was threathened as most company employees began bringing apple and android based devices to work. That RIMS products was having outages and developers are porting to platfoms such as google and apple.

At the time Chan launched his plan, RIM had slipped to an eight year low but the company's CEO Thorsten Heins had refuted that RIM was in troubled waters. Chan outlined the the strengths of blackberry in that it has a bunch of assets that android or iOS did not. He also mentioned that one of RIM's big issues were some of their execs who were ill qualified for the posts which they held.
Tom Moss, former head of business development for Android, posted to Chan on Facebook that the plan could have actually worked ... with some tweaks and that what he suggested might even still be possible today.

But pitiable, no one bought the idea of this plan.

LiteraturePetrol Prices And 20 Naira For Keg: Nigeria’s Culture Of Rip Off At The Pumps - by Kagawa(op): 10:46am On Aug 16, 2013
While purchasing petrol for my light generating set, I noticed the lady attendant had punched in 380 into the meter instead of the 400 worth I had requested for and I patiently waited for her to finish filling my gallon in order to confirm intent of ripping me off.

Just as she holstered the nozzle on the machine and lifted her face, I sprang with my question sinisterly; ‘Why did you fill 380 into my gallon contrary to the 400 I earlier requested’’. She looked at me glaringly like one who has just seen an undead and hesitantly muttered ‘’20 naira for keg’’. I replied; meaning? She said that’s how ‘they’ do it there, and I asked again, ‘they who”? She began to look frustrated but smiled to cover it up and said it was how it has always been done ‘everywhere’. By then she must have been thinking I was a new comer to the Nigerian environment by not knowing that it’s a norm to pay 20 naira extra for every small gallon of fuel bought. And if the gallon were to be close to 50 liters, you pay 50 naira.

My mind screamed ‘corruption in India’ as I enquired why I should part with that sum no matter how small. She couldn’t tell me why, she assumed I knew but I didn’t know either. She said it has been so even before she began working for that petrol station, and one would wonder why she never got to ask why.

This practice apparently exists only in a few states of the country, particularly in the south, because in my travels up north and this my aboki friends can confirm, you don’t have to pay ’20 naira for keg’. I’m positive most Lagosians just pay the sum without asking why, or ask why but never get to the route of the matter. I remember that some time in the past, most petrol stations refuse to sell to you unless you agree to pay the sum. When this happens to me I dare them because I doubt its anywhere in the Nigerian constitution to pay ’20 naira for keg’.

Later that day I asked a friend of mine who detailed the reasons he thought it was so. He said that it was a method during the military regime used to curb black marketing of petrol. Then I threw my questions asking him if we were still in the military regime, what difference it makes if I came on foot with a gallon to buy petrol and if I drove a car in and still filled up my gallon. You see it makes no sense for me carry my electricity generation set to the petrol station when I want to refill it, it’s not an automobile.

Thus said, allow my deductions. Nigerians are hardworking, intelligent, smart, witty, yet we are conformists and we easily forget and let things that ordinarily wouldn’t be slide. This is why the government have their cake and eat it. Today its deliberation on petrol price, tomorrow its petrol price increase, the next week its constitution amendment on child bride or gay marriage just as soon as a new idea on how to embezzle more funds, immunize themselves comes to their noses. They whip up these diversions like a gambler does to winning cards of which the teeming Nigerians agitate a little, get confused, relax and forget about it then go back to the ‘e go better life’ we were born into. Corruption republic. A trick that has always worked and will continue to until we change our mindset by asking the right questions, following it to the answers and seeing what is behind the façade. I rest my case. - Blaise Aboh
