Politics / Contractionary Monetary Policy Cannot Solve The Problem Of Inflation In Nigeria by kahal29: 11:18pm On Sep 05, 2022
We will not use wage and price controls to fight inflation. Rather, we will pursue a contractionary monetary policy. We will mop up excess liquidity by reducing the money supply within an economy.

https://www.nairaland.com/7317958/use-contractionary-monetary-policy-fight

In response to the above thread i want to humbly inform Mr Peter Obi that Contractionary Monetary Policy which he is proposing cannot Solve the Problem of Inflation in Nigeria.

This is because Inflation in Nigeria is not always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon. Besides this is what the central bank of Nigeria has been doing over the years meaning that you can't follow suit and expect a different result.

First, what is monetary policy?

Monetary Policy simply means the use of interest rate by the monetary authorities in this case the CBN to control the amount of money in circulation. This can either be in the form of contractionary or expansionary monetary policy.

Contractionary Monetary Policy means increasing interest rate to reduce money supply and hence reduce inflation while expansionary monetary policy means reducing interest rate to boost the amount money in circulation.

According to the monetarist, inflation is as a result of too much money in circulation or excess liquidity and according to them, to reduce it, you increase interest rate and vice versa.

However the success of using monetary policy tool to achieve price stability or control inflation depends on whether inflation is driven purely by changes in monetary aggregates.

If it is driven by other factors such as structural and cost factors as is the case in Nigeria then the use of monetary policy tool to fight inflation may not likely yield the desired medium to long-term monetary policy goals. Besides increasing interest rates has its own negative consequences on the economy one of which is that it reduces Investment.

The intention of this post is not to de-market anybody but to elicit academic contribution to the topic.

Politics / I Will Crush, Flog My Detractors In PDP, Wike Vows by kahal29: 6:30pm On Sep 05, 2022
Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has vowed that he will not leave his battle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to God.

He said God has given him the wherewithal to crush his enemies in the party.

The Governor insisted that he had the capacity to flog his opposers, whom he described as small boys, saying he won’t wait to “flog them with pepper”.

Wike, who spoke in tongues to the amusement of the crowd, said efforts by some of his party leaders to break his ranks would end in futility.

The Governor, who spoke on Monday while inaugurating the Osisioma Flyover built in Aba, Abia by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, said persons trying to infiltrate his team to weaken their resolve failed to understand their modus operandi.

Wike hinted that they were simply forerunners to the real actors behind the scene adding that trying to break the team was a mistake.

Speaking on his response when Ikpeazu suggested he should leave matters to God, he said: “I was on plane with him and we were discussing and he said why won’t I leave this thing for God and I said what do you mean by that?

“Why are you overcrowding God? God has given me what it takes for me to crush these people, for me to crush my enemies and you are telling me I should leave it for God. No. God has give me what it takes. God has so many things to do. There are the ones I should do and there are the ones I should call God.

“Now that I know I have the capacity to flog these small boys and you want me to go and leave it for God. I am going to flog them pepper. Anybody who doesn’t understand that let him know that I am not going to wait at all. All those ones who are talking in my state calm down, when we start campaigning, we will know who is who”.

On efforts to infiltrate their ranks, he said: “I don’t associate myself with those who cannot show anything. I associate myself with people I know have something to offer. Ikpeazu I want to say it without fear or favour and without any contradiction, you are a man that knows what to do for his people.

“I and Ikpeazu have come a long way. People do not understand relationship. They think relationship can be bought with money. No relationship can be bought with me. That is why when I read on pages of newspaper, they said some people were making attempts to break my rank and I say they don’t understand the modus operandi of what we are doing.

“If they understand the modus operandi they won’t waste their time. If you like go and meet Ikpeazu, Seyi, Ortom, Ugwuanyi, you don’t even understand the modus operandi. These are not the people doing what you are seeing. We are using ourselves as if we are the people. We are not the people so you are making mistakes”.

Wike told the crowd that the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, described Ikpeazu as a boy because they were seeking justice and fairness in the party.

The Governor said the party had distributed positions to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and former Senate President Bukola Saraki but had nothing to offer Abia State.

He said even government positions such as Senate Presidency and Secretary to Federal Government had been allotted to people without anything yet for Abia.

He said: “All those they are fighting are those who are projecting their party. They said that Abia State Governor is a boy, Wike is a boy, Seyi is a boy, Ortom is a boy and Enugu is a boy see what the boys are doing. They that are the men should show us what they are doing.

“Why is Ikpeazu a boy? It is because Ikpeazu said agreement is agreement. You told me you will do this, now time has come for you to do it you don’t want to do it. Is it good? Ikpeazu said look you have shared to this one, you shared to Atiku, you shared to Okowa and you shared to Saraki, which one did you share to Ikpeazu?

“When you are sharing Senate President to so so person, you shared secretary to government to so so person, which one have you given to the people of Abia.

“Nobody should bother about any abuses on me. I don’t even know whether they are abusing me. If they like let them put everything in social media and abuse me we will know who is relevant or not at the appropriate time.

“Politics is not to go on pages of newspaper. It is not to go and buy TV spots and talk. Politics is who will deliver at the appropriate time. That is the key. If you like keep abusing me.

“What is important is when the time comes, we will know. When the jungle matures we will know those who can stand crisis. We will know those who have the capacity to say this is where our state will go.

“Ikpeazu is one of those governors with the capacity to decide what the people of Abia will do. So don’t bother yourselves. when I wake up in the morning and nothing had been said against me I am worried because it makes me happy when they talk about Wike. I appeal to them don’t stop keep talking about Wike.

“We have not started campaign. When I came back yesterday where I went to enjoy myself; life is full of enjoyment. I went to enjoy my life and they said I went for a meeting. My business now is to work and enjoy”.

Politics / Stop Following Wike Around, Tackle Abia’s Infrastructural Deficit, Ikpeazu Told by kahal29: 8:58am On Sep 03, 2022
A chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya, has advised Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu to concentrate on how to address the infrastructural challenges in Abia State instead of following Gov. Nyesom Wike around the world.

Chief Ogbonnaya who is the Abia State Cordinator of the Campaign Council of the PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar, described as a distraction, the recent meetings in London involving Gov Ikpeazu, Wike, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, and presidential candidates of major parties.

According to Ogbonnaya who featured on a live Radio programme monitored by Vanguard in Umuahiia, “Ikpeazu should at this point, centre on how to tackle infrastructural problems bedeviling Abia State”.

He said that Ikpeazu’s romance with Wike “is all about his personal interest” instead of advancing the interest of the state.

” I’m an Abian, and I don’t think Wike is competent to discuss the benefits of Abia. We have our own problems.

” The major problem of Abia State today is collapse of Infrastructure. Look at the federal roads in Abia. They are not motorable. It’s difficult to go to Owerri from Umuahia or Umuahia to Port Harcourt and Akwa Ibom. Arochukwu and Bende Roads are impassable.

” Why must I go to think of appointment now other than what my people will get?”

The Atiku’s ally also called on Gov. Ikpeazu to consult with the elders of the party in the state to outline the needs of the state for further articulation at the centre.

” With due respect, I call on my Governor to look for the elders of the state. No one man goes alone to negotiate for his people. Let him call the elders. There were people who were here before him. There has to be a town hall meeting to articulate what we want.

” We want a free trade zone; we want the natural Sea Port that God gave us at Obehie to be established by the Federal Government. What is happening to the rail line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri?

Ogbonnaya said that efforts were being intensified by the Campaign Council to mobilise Abia voters for Atiku, arguing that contrary to fears in some quarters, South East’s interest will be protected under Atiku presidency.

He described Atiku as a unifier and a man with capacity to pull Nigeria out of the woods.

” Atiku is one Nigerian I know that does not have a tribe. I have been following him since 1994 and I understand him to be a true Nigerian; a great unifier, and someone who believes in the oneness of Nigeria.

” Atiku believes in the good brains irrespective of their tribe. When you go to American University owned by Atiku you will see people from all parts of Nigeria working for him. Go to his farm, factories and business, they are run by best brains from different parts of the country”.

Contributing, Director Media, Publicity and Strategy of the Atiku Abubakar presidential Organisation, Chief Kingsley Megwara, cautioned Ndigbo against what he called ” putting their eggs in one basket” to avoid their current ordeals under the current administration.

He said that Atiku would heal the wounds of the various aggrieved sections of the country and quickly fix the economy if voted into power.

Similarly, Secretary, All Igbo Youths for Atiku, Hon. Ifeanyi Umere, said Igbo youths would vote massively for Atiku more than they did in 2019.

Politics / Bode George: Ayu Must Go Before Campaigns Start by kahal29: 4:22am On Sep 02, 2022
FORMER South-West Deputy National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George has said that Senator Iyorcha Ayu must quit as national chairman of the party before the commencement of electioneering campaigns for 2023 general elections.

George was special guest to Governor Nyesom Wike Thursday at Omerelu, Ikwerre Local Government Area for the inauguration of internal roads constructed by the Rivers State Government.

The chief host, Governor Wike on the occasion also attacked Ayu, accusing the PDP Chairman of ingratitude after he and associates helped to return him as Chairman, adding that nothing will save Ayu from being removed.

Bode George said, “The issue of the Chairman of PDP must be addressed before commencement of campaigns for the 2023 elections. It is an antithesis and against the norms and culture of our party that our presidential candidate, our national chairman and the chairman of the Board of Trustee will come from one section of the country.

“Party members from the south are already feeling alienated. PDP if not a private company. So, before we start the presidential campaign at the end of this month, the National Chairman must go to the South. That is what Governor Wike is saying and as a life member of the Board of Trustees of our party, I support this position 100 percent.

“Statutorily, it is the National Chairman who hands over the party’s flag to our presidential candidate. How will party members from the South feel when they see that at all political rallies Southerners have no public political representation.”

“But we can only go back to Aso Rock if we are united and not divided. Some people are abusing Governor Wike, he is a trouble shooter. Those abusing him, as an elder and as a father in this party, I am directing them, they must stop immediately.

“Because Governor Wike is only fighting for injustice, for equity, for fairness in our party. He is not only a strong pillar in this party, but a mobiliser, a financier and an actualizer. Since he joined the PDP, he has not left this party. Am also in a founding father of the party and since 1998 I have not left this party.”

Escalating the heat the party chairman, Wike told Ayu, “You were sleeping in your house, calling me per second, saying my brother, my brother. Today all those who brought you as Chairman are all boys. Nigerians have seen how ungrateful some of you can be.

“And that is why Nigerians are also careful, thinking if you give these people power, how grateful will they be to Nigerians? I’ve kept quiet thinking we will reconcile. Now that you have become arrogant to say, you were elected. Where did you campaign. Where were your campaign posters. Even when we gave you money to print posters, you pocketed it.

“Hire all the media moguls, hire all social media top people, write all you can write, it will not save you. Carry all the television houses working for you, it will not bother me at all. I do what my conscience tells me to do and what is right for our people.

“Ayu said we are children. Yes, the children brought you to be chairman of the party. The children brought you from the gutter and made you chairman. Ayu, you were impeached as Senate president. Ayu, were sacked by Obasanjo in his administration two times.

“Arrogance cannot take you to anywhere. Now, we have seen that you don’t want the party to win election, we’ll help you. When you should instead come out to say, I’m sorry, for the sake of us, he is telling us we are children.

A man who is inconsistent and ran away from the party, telling us who spent our time, had sleepless nights to make sure this party does not go down. Now he has the audacity we are children. We will tell him you’re a prodigal father. A man that was impeached, sacked, ran away from the party is now coming to say, I’m founding member of the party. Then you ran away.”

Arrogance, Ingratitude Can’t Take You Anywhere, Wike Blasts PDP Chairman

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, slammed the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu, for showing “ingratitude” and “arrogance” after he was assisted to get the seat of the national chairmanship of the party.

The governor spoke during the commissioning of Omerelu Internal roads in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

Wike challenged Ayu to show himself as a man of honour and integrity by fulfilling his promise that he would vacate the chairmanship seat if the northern region produces the presidential candidate of the party.

He also said the N14bn PDP realised from the sale of forms of primaries last May must be judiciously used.

His comment is the latest in the calls for Ayu to quit the party’s chairmanship after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (from Adamawa State) emerged as the presidential candidate of the PDP in May.

Ayu, who hails from Benue State in northern Nigeria, had last October said he would vacate the chairmanship seat but on Wednesday said he won’t resign.

Earlier, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Walid Jibrin, and a northerner from Nasarawa State agreed that it is unfair for the party to have its presidential candidate and national chairman from the same region.

Politics / Wike: Something Will Soon Happen In PDP by kahal29: 5:17pm On Aug 29, 2022
Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has vowed to unmask presidential candidates dishing out fake promises to rescue the country.

The Governor, who insisted that such persons with fake rescue campaigns did not mean well for the country, said something would soon happen in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike noted that he was in a privileged position to know better and would reveal their identities at the appropriate time to enable people vote wisely in 2023.

He spoke on Monday when he unveiled construction of internal roads at Rumuesara, Eneka town in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Wike said: “Some other people are busy, putting themselves together on how they will take over leadership in Nigeria to loot the remaining ones this other people have already kept.

“I’m privileged to know and at the appropriate time I’ll tell you who these people are. You need to know what is happening in Nigeria. Forget about all these people running around saying they want to rescue or save you (Nigeria). Just watch to see what is going to happen next.

“All of us should be calm concerning what is happening in PDP. In fact, nothing has happened yet. But by the grace of God, something will happen.”

Wike said while his administration has continued to commission and inaugurate projects for Rivers people, detractors had remained relentless in sponsoring negative media campaigns against him.

He said despite such negative media comments, his administration had not relented in offering good governance to strengthen its relationship with the people of Rivers State.

He said: “Look at us concentrating in giving our people good governance. What is good governance? Good governance is making the people to be happy. Good governance is providing infrastructure for the people.

“Good governance is not about party. Providing good governance is about leadership. We are here everyday flagging off projects, commissioning projects even though our tenure is coming to an end.”

Wike said it would be difficult for seasonal politicians, who had never done anything to better the lot of Rivers electorate to come to them and solicit their votes.

He said: “Now that I have come to Eneka to provide this basic infrastructure, I can come back to Eneka and ask you to follow me, let us go there or let us stay here. Do they have what it takes to come and talk to you? Can they come and talk to you?

“It is somebody that hears from you that you also hear from. This one you’ve not provided anything for my people, you’ve not asked them what they want, then you want to tell them where to vote.

“So, it is us that will come and meet you and say see where you’ll vote. And I know based on our relationship, since we have not deceived you, we have not told you lies, you will follow us at the appropriate time.”

Politics / EXCLUSIVE: Wike’s Allies Demand Ayu’s Resignation As Condition For Peace by kahal29: 5:19pm On Aug 26, 2022
Allies of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, have demanded the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), TheCable can report.

Sources said the allies made the demand when Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, met with them in an attempt to resolve the rift between him and Wike.

Meanwhile, it has also emerged that some members of the PDP national working committee national (NWC) are pushing for a probe of the party’s finances under Ayu’s watch.

Thursday’s meeting, which was also attended by governors Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, was held at Carlton Hotel in London.

Six PDP governors are thought to be aligned with Wike in his face-off with Atiku who reportedly angered them by saying he did not pick Wike as his running mate because he cannot work with him.

Atiku was accused of being “impolitic”, further worsened by public statements made by former governors Sule Lamido and Babangida Aliyu which Wike’s associates consider “disparaging”.

Lamido described Wike as an “emperor” and said Atiku did not need him to win the presidential election.

TheCable reported how the PDP standard bearer embarked on a frantic trip to the UK to have a parley with Wike — after the latter’s meeting with Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), in France, earlier in the week.

The meeting between Wike and Tinubu is said to have explored the possibility of the Rivers governor working for the APC at the polls.

A crisis rocked the boat of the main opposition party after it held its presidential primary election in May.

Party stakeholders expressed concerns that Abubakar ignored Wike after he chose Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, as his running mate.

Wike’s side said Ayu would need to step down for there to be harmony in the opposition party.

“Governors in Wike’s group demanded that Ayu would have to resign for peace to reign in the party. They said he is a divisive figure,” a source close to Atiku, who briefed TheCable after the meeting, said.

Ayu openly celebrated when Atiku won the party’s ticket, describing Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto governor who withdrew to support Atiku, as “the hero of the convention”.

In a counter to the demand for Ayu’s resignation, the former vice-president said Umar Damagum, deputy national chairman (north), would become the chairman according to the PDP constitution — meaning another person from the north would hold sway in the party.

But the governors said both would have to resign than and pave the way for Taofeek Arapaja, deputy national chairman (south), to be in charge of the party.

“They said it is about consensus for the good of the party. Atiku told them that he would think about it and get back within two weeks,” another source said.

“They also said that in 2011, Okwesilieze Nwodo resigned and paved the way for Haliru Mohammed Bello to become national chairman because the party’s presidential was coming to the south through Dr Goodluck Jonathan.”

Ayu is also faced with another brewing problem.

An insider told TheCable that some members of the NWC want Ayu to account for the funds that accrued to the party through the sale of forms and donations.

“Some of the NWC members want an audit for about N1 billion that the party got from friends of Atiku, in addition to donates from governors and sale of nomination forms,” the insider said.

The opposition party and APC raked in billions of naira through the sale of forms in the build-up to their primary elections.

Politics / Rivers Governorship Candidate, Fubara, Absent As Ayu Hosts PDP Nominees by kahal29: 10:36am On Aug 25, 2022
Allies of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike, shunned a meeting between the Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee (NWC) and the 36 States gubernatorial candidates in Abuja, yesterday.

The meeting chaired by the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, was summoned to enable him and members of the NWC interface with the party’s gubernatorial candidates.

Daily Sun investigations showed that the Rivers State governor’s supporters who did not attend the meeting included the Rivers State governorship candidate, Siminialayi Fubara, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde who is said to be out of the country and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Sources said the absence of Wike’s allies may not be unconnected with the ongoing faceoff between him and the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar as well as the insistence by Wike’s loyalists that Ayu must resign for a southern candidate as a condition for reconciliation.

The Rivers Governor has been at daggers drawn with the party since the emergence of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as vice presidential candidate.

The intervention by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in the crisis recently resulted in Wike and Atiku setting up a peace committee to resolve all grey areas and report back to a larger committee. However, efforts to resolve the crisis is yet to yield amicable solution.

In an interview with journalists after the meeting, Ayu said he was impressed by the progress being made by the party across the country and expressed optimism that the party would win the 2023 general elections, both at the national and state levels.

“The candidates expressed their concerns in their various states. They briefed us on efforts they are making to win the election. As you know, the elections will be won in the states, not just at the national level.

“I am very happy with the progress that have made so far in their states, we have clarified some of the little issues, it was an extremely useful meeting. So, we are happy that members of the party are determined that we don’t just win at the national level but also at the state Assemblies, National Assembly, governorship, we want to return about 25 state governors or more as we used to have. So, the mood in the party is excellent.”

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said they believed in the supremacy and sanctity of the party.

Responding to a question on the meeting reportedly held between Wike and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mohammed said he was not aware of it.

“The candidates are coming together, uniting the party to discuss even issues of reconciliation . So, it is a very democratic party, he is open and we have ask him all the question that we need to ask about how to win the elections and then the strategies are ours, we don’t have to relate it to the media now, but certainly we are on course.”

On the ongoing crisis within the party, governorship candidate of Kaduna State, Isa Ashiru, told journalists: “We are here on a consultative meeting with our leaders on the way forward and we have extended discussions and views, regarding the 2023 elections and we are home and dry. We don’t have crisis in PDP. I don’t know where you got this information.”

Also present at the meeting were Ifeanyi Odii, Oborevwori Sheriff, Peter Mbah, Umo Eno, Ladidi Adebutu, PDP governorship candidates in Ebonyi, Delta, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Ogun states respectively, among others.

Politics / Wike To Lamido: You Have No Political Value, PDP Lost Jigawa On Your Watch by kahal29: 8:01pm On Aug 24, 2022
Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa, has not added value to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 2015.

The Rivers state governor said this in reaction to recent remarks made by Lamido about him.

While speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Lamido said Wike has no monopoly over the electorate in Rivers.

He said Wike’s stance politically during the 2023 elections will not cost the party votes in Rivers, noting that the governor does not have a monopoly over the people.

Reacting to the comments in a statement issued by Kelvin Ebiri, his spokesperson, Wike said Lamido and his cohorts played an “ignoble role” that caused the PDP’s defeat in 2015 and 2019 in Jigawa.

“It is rather appalling that at a time when concerted efforts are being made by lovers of true democracy and the unity of the party, to resolve some inherent contradictions plaguing the PDP, Alhaji Lamido and his cohorts, who have since lost their relevance in the polity, are busy creating friction and schism,” the statement reads.

“Governor Wike has never claimed to be the custodian of the over 3 million votes in Rivers State. But as the leader of the PDP and good people of Rivers State, anyone who underrates the governor’s political pedigree or dares to ignore his influence in the State and beyond will be doing so at his own peril.

“We wish to remind Alhaji Lamido that governor Wike has never left anyone in doubt about his capacity to sway the voters in Rivers State in a direction that benefits the people and the State. In overall, when he speaks, Rivers people will listen, no doubt.

“Perhaps, Alhaji Lamido thinks Nigerians are suffering from selective amnesia to have forgotten in a hurry, the ignoble role he and his cohorts played between 2014 and 2015, that culminated in the defeat of the PDP in the 2015 general election.

“We hope that he is not up in such a scheme again to cause a repeat of that history. Otherwise, if Alhaji Lamido has any modicum of conscience, he won’t be making disparaging comments about governor Wike, whom many have described as the pillar of the PDP since 2015.

“We wish to state without equivocation that no well-meaning member of the PDP will describe governor Wike as ‘insignificant’ in the affairs of the PDP. With all modesty, only persons plagued by schizophrenia psychosis will ascribe any form of relevance to Alhaji Lamido, under whose leadership the PDP has woefully lost two governorship elections in Jigawa State in quick succession.

“Under Lamido’s watch, as a governor of Jigawa State in 2015, the APC governorship candidate, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, scored a total 648,045 votes to defeat his PDP opponent, Malam Aminu Ringim, who scored a total 479, 447 votes. Worst still, in 2019, governor Abubakar polled 810,933, while the PDP candidate scored 288,356.

“Such records depict that Alhaji Lamido cannot and does not have such a political following that will benefit the PDP. Those who want electoral victory for the PDP are not dampening the morale required for a political offensive at APC, but Alhaji Lamido is cracking the wall of unity badly.”

Ebiri said the margin of Wike’s election victory in 2015 and 2019 in Rivers state “are marks of political sagacity and determination to keep PDP at a leading pedestal”.

“So, as the 2023 general elections beckon, we wish to advise Alhaji Lamido to redeem his battered political image by delivering Jigawa State to the PDP, if he can,” he added.

Politics / Tinubu, Wike’s London Meeting Rattles PDP, Atiku by kahal29: 5:22am On Aug 24, 2022
The London meeting of the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has unsettled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Daily Trust reports.

Wike, who came second during the presidential primaries of the PDP has been at loggerheads with Atiku following the selection of the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the vice presidential candidate of

Spirited efforts by the leaders of the party to persuade Wike to key into Atiku’s project have hit the rock.

Instead, the Rivers State governor has upped his romance with the chieftains of the ruling party and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Analysts believe that this development will heighten the anxiety in the camp of the former vice president.

Reliable sources close to both Tinubu and Wike told this paper that the two personalities met on Monday in London, where issues revolving around the presidential aspirations of the former Lagos State governor were extensively discussed.

A source in the campaign council of Tinubu said the meeting, which he described as “fruitful” was attended by six persons, three from each side.

On the part of the APC presidential candidate, he said Tinubu, the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, were part of the parley.

According to him, from Wike’s side, two governors who are of the PDP, Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo) attended the meeting.

“It was a fruitful outing from our end. Further meetings would be held,” the source said, saying he should not be quoted
.

A former minister in Wike’s camp, who also confirmed the meeting, said there was nothing wrong with the parley, saying Atiku is also meeting with APC governors.

“Atiku is also meeting with some APC governors, why are they complaining? What is good for the goose is good for the gander. It is all part of the game and nothing more,” he said in a phone interview last night.

It was learnt that two things are being ironed out, whether Wike should dump PDP and join the APC or remain in PDP but work for the APC at the presidential election.

In the 2019 presidential election, Atiku polled 473,971 votes against Buhari’s 150,710 in Rivers State.

A former minister of works and chieftain of the APC, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, has advised Wike to consider working with Asiwaju Tinubu, noting that he should not remain where he is not appreciated.

“In politics, nothing is impossible. Political parties are always looking for numbers and value, and Governor Wike will add it to the campaign. He should consider working for the APC, especially considering that his efforts are not appreciated where he is,” he said.

Efforts to speak with the spokesman of the APC presidential campaign, Festus Keyamo, the Director of Media and Publicity of the campaign, Bayo Onanuga as well as Tinubu’s media aide, Tunde Rahman, proved abortive as they neither answer calls placed to their known telephone numbers nor respond to SMS/Whatsapp messages.

When contacted, a spokesperson for Atiku, Paul Ibe, declined comment on the matter.

Wike Spoils For War As Crisis With Atiku Lingers: 'I Will Finish Them', Watch Him Tell Opposing Rivers PDP Leaders To Get 'Ready For Fireworks'

Speaking at the flagging off ceremony of the construction of the internal roads in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, Governor Wike threatened to fight to finish, maintaining that he will “finish” anyone who pitches his tent with “enemies of the state

Wike said, if anybody fights our system, that they will fight the person back. He went on to say that, he will leave his enemy and finish you first

All of you, who are going to Abuja to hold meetings with their enemies in this state, he is going to finish it to the last.

He said you can't come here, gain from the state, be a contractor, get money, then move to Abuja to hold meeting with our enemy and you say I will leave you free, no I will not leave you free.

Politics / Rivers Government Seals Businesses Of Pro-Atiku PDP Members - Thisday by kahal29: 8:36am On Aug 20, 2022
Security operatives early hours of yesterday, sealed-up business outlets of supporters of presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Atiku and former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Austin Opara, located in the Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State.

THISDAY gathered that the affected outlets include Mega Tool Filling Station at Ojoto Street in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, owned by Hon. Chinyere Igwe, a serving House of Representatives member, Priscy’s Lounge, owned by Jones Ogbonda, a former lawmaker in the Rivers State House of Assembly and Preray Hotel, property of Mr. Ikechi Chinda, former PDP Chairman, Port Harcourt Local Government Area.

It was further gathered that scores of persons were arrested by the security operatives at the sealed Preray Hotel located at Eagle Island area of Port Harcourt.

The sealing-up of the business premises took effect about two weeks after the state Governor, Nyesom Wike, threatened to shut down any hotel or entertainment centres linked to criminal political activities

Governor Wike had stated that he obtained intelligence reports that some misguided politicians had started recruiting cultists, ex-convicts and thugs in furtherance of their political aspirations for 2023.

He said the state government was aware that owners of hotels and entertainment centres were in the process of giving out their premises to politicians and political parties as a convenient base for the gathering of political thugs across the state.

“Similarly, we will not allow any political party, be it the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party or the Social Democratic Party to threaten the safety and security of lives and property during the campaigns with mayhem, thuggery or violence.

“Accordingly, we have already alerted and set the security agencies on the trail of these misguided politicians and leaders of political parties and stop them in their tracks with the full weight of the law.

“We also wish to warn owners of hotels and proprietors of relaxation centres to take notice and desist from releasing their facilities for politicians and party leaders to use to meet and plot against the peace, safety and security of our state.

“I wish to reiterate our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of lives and property throughout the state and to reassure everyone that we shall continue to spare no effort to keep Rivers State safe and secure,” Wike stated.

One of the victims of the sealed outlets, Hon. Chinyere Igwe has lamented that they are suffering from political victimisation.

The federal lawmaker who spoke with THISDAY on phone, alleged that their offence was because they are supporting Atiku.

He said, “Is political victimisation. He is victimising us because we are aligning with Rt. Hon. Austin Okpara, a former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives for having a meeting with Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, the PDP presidential candidate.”

Igwe narrated that “The security operatives were on directive. When they got there, they went round and didn’t find one jerry-can of fuel, not even a cup in the filling station. They thought we were engaging in bunkering but when they didn’t see anything they just sealed the place with their own padlock they came with and positioned their vehicles.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has condemned the attacks on businesses in the Port Harcourt city.

The APC spoke through its acting Publicity Secretary, Mr. Darlington Nwauju.

According to the statement signed by Nwauju yesterday, APC stated: “Reports of attacks on business owners and destruction of properties at the popular Building Materials Market at the Kala area of Obio/Akpor LGA by men of the Taskforce set up by the Rivers State Government, and, the sealing up of three business premises (Priscy’s Lounge, Preray Hotel & Mega Tools Ltd.) within the Port Harcourt City LGA, and subsequent arrest of customers whose only crime was patronising these businesses by agents of the Rivers State Government, is to say the least barbaric.

“May we draw the attention of the State Government and its agents to the provisions of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which allows for freedom to live and move freely in Rivers State. Not even the President is empowered under our constitution to seal up people’s legitimate businesses for whatever reasons.

“Even if a business premises is reasonably suspected to be one that is used for illegitimate purposes, only a court of law can pronounce the company or individual guilty. Nobody under the principle of fair hearing can one be a judge in his own matter (nemo judex in causa sua).

“We regrettably recall the illegal demolition of Prudent Hotel, Alode and Etemeteh Hotel, Onne in Eleme LGA in 2020 for allegedly flouting COVID-19 lockdown directives. The outgoing Governor of Rivers State is a senior lawyer and life bencher, he should therefore guide his agents to respect the law.

“The APC in Rivers State however wish to assure the business community, local and foreign investors, that an APC administration in Rivers State shall encourage entrepreneurship, and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.”

As at the time of filing this report, Rivers State Police Command was yet to react on the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Koko, when contacted promised to get back to THISDAY.

Politics / How Rivers Elders Ganged Up Against Me - Wike by kahal29: 3:46am On Aug 16, 2022
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, accused some elders of the state of ganging up against him because they did not scale through the primary to be the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

The governor explained that some of them, who indicated interest to fly the party’s flag but failed, went to mobilise in Abuja to ensure that he did not emerge the running mate of the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

Wike spoke during the 74th birthday reception organised to honour a former governor of the state, Dr. Peter Odili, at his residence in Old Government Residential Area, Port Harcourt.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr Kelvin Ebiri, and made available to journalists in Port Harcourt.

Ebiri quoted the governor as saying that, “On my last birthday, 12midnight, one of our elders called me that they want to see me. They came to me and said they came to wish me happy birthday.

“Then, they presented me a letter that I should run for President. All of them, including Dr. Abiye (Sekibo) signed the document.

“I said ‘okay, you people too should go and give me someone who will be governor after me.’ They all sat there, looking left and right.

“I asked them, ‘those of you who are interested to be governor should raise your hands.’ Everybody raised his hand. One person didn’t raise his hand, Senator Bari Mpigi.

“I asked why he was not interested, he replied, ‘sir, let me hold what God has given me. I don’t want to lose the two.”

Wike noted the elders also signed a document that they would abide by the outcome of the governorship primary.

He, however, expressed regrets that since they were not successful, they have turned around now to allege that he was pursuing a third term bid.

He added, “Some persons don’t know the history. They go and tell all kinds of story. But the truth is this: all of them (elders) signed the document prepared by O.C.J. Okocha that whoever I will bring, they will abide to it.

“But now, they went to Abuja, that I must not be vice president. I also read yesterday when I was in Paris, one of them saying that I told him that if they do to me what they did to Dr. Odili, that I will collapse the system.

“I am not an ungrateful person and I will never be ungrateful in my life. What is important is that I have done well as a governor. I am happy and I am leaving office a happy man.”
